Idle Sessions 2012 Server

In previous versions of windows server (200, 2003, 2008) I was able to open terminal services manager aka remote desktop services manager and see how long a session has been idle. I was able to that on servers that did not have the terminal server role installed.
How can I tell how long a session has been idle on 2012 server?

Hi,
You can use query user in a command prompt to see how long a session has been idle:
query user /server:<servername>
For RD Session Host servers that are part of a collection you can view idle time using Server Manager.

  • Windows Server 2012 The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured

    Hi
I have a standard Windows Server 2012 that is hosted in the cloud by a hosting provider -
This server has been up and running fir 6 months - recently we have been getting a warning
"The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured" - The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server.
Yet, we only use this with 2 connections as part of the standard licence agreement and this server is not used as a user's desktop only an ftp and web server- do therefore we do not need to purchase any cal licences (we have another server with the same
hosting company that does not have this issue and has been up for 18months)
Please can someone advise how I resolve this issue, the hosting company states that I must resolve it as they only host and resell the server licence
    Thank-you
    Richard Steele

    Hi Richard,
You need to uninstall Remote desktop session host feature. After removing it, you will default two connections which does not need to purchase RD CALs'.

  • Windows 2012 Remote desktop session host server not detecting RD licensing server

    Hi,
We have a customer server which is Windows 2012. We installed RDS session host server role and configured it to use RD licensing server as per the
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839?wa=wsignin1.0
After configuring, when I open RD license diagonser tool, it says, RD license server is not available. Also shows, credential not available. When I enter the credential by clicking, provide credentials, it does not get applied. I see no event logs related
to RD service. However, I see the below event log which points to RD licensing server.
DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer <RD license server> using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID     273c (C:\Windows\system32\mmc.exe).
Please help in fixing the issue.
    Thanks,
    Umesh

    Hi Umesh,
    Thanks for your comment.
During your configuration, have you specified RD License server for RDSH to use?
You can also specify a license server for the RD Session Host server to use by applying the Group Policy under below path.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing
Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers – Provide the FQDN of the license servers to use
Also this setting can be specified by below method.
To configure the license server on RDSH/RDVH:
    $obj = gwmi -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList("License.contoso.com")
Note “License” is the name of the License Server in the environment
To verify the license server configuration on RDSH/RDVH:
    $obj = gwmi -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.GetSpecifiedLicenseServerList()
    More information.

  • Server 2008 smb idle sessions staying open after 15min time period

The SMB idle session time appears to be set to 15 minutes yet there are sessions open that are 4 days old.
I think that the auto-disconnect timeout is being ignored on the Windows Server 2008r2. Sessions should not be staying idle for days.

hi. i have a windows 2012 server and it keeps closing after 30 mins...i am connected thru RDP and have looked everywhere online for a tutorial to change the setting that keeps closing it but can't find it anywhere! please help!

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you check the timeout and reconnection setting for RDP?
Does disconnection happens on active session or Idle session?
We can configure the setting by collection properties or by GPO setting.
On collection Properties check the Timeout Tab and set the setting according to your requirement. On GPO we can find this setting on below mention path and check according to it.

  • The grace period for the Remote Desktop Session Host server has expired

<p>I'm running Windows Server 2012, we only have 1 server and it's a DC.  I'm trying to RD to the server from my Windows 7 laptop. It was working fine on Friday but when I came in on Monday I got message saying that 'The remote session was disconnnected
because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license'
So after a bit of digging I found out my 'grace period' had expired, so ordered a new license which I got today, installed this all ok but still i cannot connect via RD I get the same message....went into the RD License Diagnoser and it said the problem
    was as follows
'The grace period for the Remote Desktop Session Host server has expired, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license servers. Connections to the RD Session Host server will be denied unless a license server is configured for
    the RD Session Host server.'
    Suggested Resolution as follows
Configure a license server for the Remote Desktop Session Host server. If you have an existing license server, specify that license server for the RD Session Host Server. Otherwise, install RD Licensing on a computer on your network and Configure RD Session
    Host Server to use it.'
I cannot figure out how to do this as I cannot find the RD Session Host Server tool.
Can any of you lovely people help me please

    Hello,
Best option would be to assign the license server by using AD GPO. Youl will need to configure the following:
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing
    and define the settings for:
Use the specified Remote Desktop License Server
Set the Remote Desktop Licensing mode
Then assign the policy tho your server.

  • How do I add my Custom Workflow Activity to FIM 2010 R2 SP1 installed on Windows 2012 server?

    Hellos.
I have tried and failed to add my custom.dll into the Windows Server 2012  GAC.
We have a version of FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 and that was no problem. There seemed to be a gacutil.exe present on the system which added my assembly.
I cannot find gacutil.exe on the Windows 2012 Server.
I have downloaded and installed Windows SDK for Windows 8. However, when I try the gacutil.exe /i <myCustom.dll> nothing seems to happen.
Are there any guidelines how to add custom workflow activities to FIM when installed on a Windows Server 2012 system?
    TIA
    *HH

Well yes. It is fine when FIM is hosted on Windows Server 2008 R2.My difficulty is that I am using FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 and Windows Server 2012. No GACutility executable.
However, the problem has been resolved. Powershell can be used to modify the assemblies.
I opened a RunAs Administrator PS session. My assembly is in folder c:\Temp
Using Windows Explorer I browsed the folder c:\windows\assembly and noted the System.EnterpriseServices entries: version (2.0.0.0) and public key token (b03f5f7f11d50a3a)
(My version is 2.0.0.0 because when installing FIM and SharePoint 2013 the instructions I used suggested setting .Net version to be 2.0)
These powershell commands got me going...
    PS C:\temp> [System.Reflection.Assembly]::Load("System.EnterpriseServices, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a")
    GAC    Version        Location
    True   v4.0.30319     C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\assembly\GAC_64\System.EnterpriseServices\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50...
    PS C:\temp> $publish = New-Object System.EnterpriseServices.Internal.Publish
    PS C:\temp> $publish.GacInstall("c:\temp\RunPowershellLibrary.dll")
    PS C:\temp>
    PS C:\temp>
    PS C:\temp> iisreset
Amazingly I can see the assembly RunPowershellLibrary in my Windows 2012 GAC. :-)
Also, what is more cheering is that the custom activity actually works with FIM 2010 R2 Sp1.

  • Can't add own application to RemoteApps - "You must specify a file from the RD Session Host server SERVERNAME by using the UNC path....

    Hi, there
I'm not really pro- at RDS in server 2012 (r1), but I have a problem and don't find anything suitable on internet:
I'm trying to publish one of my own, unlisted programs to rdweb, but it keeps saying "You must specify a file from the RD Session Host server SERVERNAME by using the UNC path...."
    1) I provided the path in the unc name - when I click "Add.." then i browse the the .exe file via network share, not via local path. So that should be OK
    2) Firewall is turned off and eventhough the exeptions are enabled, both of then, checked
What else should I do to make this work?

    Okej, I found the sollution:
You have to specify the path like \\hostname\drive_letter$\path-to-the-program.
I was doing wrong because i wrote it like \\hostname\ShareName\path-to-the-program.
I was misleded because the wizard wants me to find the program by clicking, and not by entring the path manualy.

  • How do I turn off Hyper-V 2012 server sleep mode?

Just installed Hyper-V 2012 server on a HP ML360 G8. Also installed Corefig 1.1.1. It seems after about 10 minutes if idle time the monitor goes black and the unit goes into sleep or hibernation.  I have used powercfg to set it to the High Performance
power scheme and set screensaver to none in Corefig.
When the monitor goes black, if I move the mouse the sconfig screen, corefig, etc windows do not show until I run the mouse over them. Even then the windows do not 'repaint' until I run the mouse over the whole window or make some kind of key stroke in each
    window.
Worried what this will do to my VMs once I start building them and would like to see the screen at all times.  This is the first 2012 box and I have never had this issue with any of the Core 2008 products.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    “I can't locate the GUI you show, it's Hyper-V 2012 Server,so i can't edit the settings.
Sems like it may be the monitor itself is going to sleep”
The other possible is you don’t have the administrator rights, or your server has got the Power Management, after you configuration the power option, the GPO refresh then
the old configuration be covered. Please refer the following article to confirm that:

  • Windows 7 SP1 client file lock on network share hosted ny WIndows 2012 Server

    Hello
I have one strange problem after migration from Windows 2003 Server to Windows 2012 Server R2 Standard.
All migration tasks went well but two things do not work.
In Computer Management you have The Opened Files feature and if you open any file that is located on the network share hosted by Windows 2012 R2 form Windows 7 SP1 and then close it
it remains open in the Opened Files tab (even if you wait an hour).  There is no problem with Windows XP SP3. The issue exist only with Windows 7.
The session view of sessions to the file server do not work. If I try to open it I get the message that the application is not responding.
Can someone help me with that ?
    About the environment:
It is one server Domain migrated form 2003 to 2012R2.
The domain and forest level was raised to 2012 R2.
I have made clean install of Windows 2012 R2 and then migrated AD.
    Best Regards
    Sebastian Sala

    Hi Sebastian,
    >>There is no problem with Windows XP SP3. The issue exist only with Windows 7.
T>>he session view of sessions to the file server do not work. If I try to open it I get the message that the application is not responding.
Based on the description, please check event logs in Event Viewer to see if there were some related events logged. Besides, does this phenomenon happen all Windows 7 clients? We can try to restart the client to see if it helps.

  • Install Remote Desktop Services Failed on Windows 2012 Server

I understand RDS is not recommended on DC due to security consideration.  However since I want to play it at home, it is not much a concern.  Such scenario works fine on Windows 2008 R2.  But on Windows 2012, the RDS (session-based, have not
tried VDI, but expect same result) installation always fails and is incomplete on DC.
In \Administrative Tools\Terminal Services, I only have RD Licensing Diagnoser and RD licensing manager.  The remote desktop service management service cannot be started (Error code: 0x88250001).  Is there any extra configuration needed for RDS
working on Server 2012 DC or before the installation?  Thanks.
Update: this issue has been solved in Windows 2012 R2 Server.  According to
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2013/07/09/what-s-new-in-remote-desktop-services-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
"Single server RDS deployment including Active Directory. We now support running our RD Connection Broker role service on the same physical instance as an Active Directory Domain Controller.  In addition, we published
guidelines for how RD Session Host could be used without the RD Connection Broker."
The guidelines (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839/en-us) primarily apply to Windows 2012 Server.

Asinine.  Simply Asinine.  Microsoft took it out because of $GREED$.
RemoteDesktop has become so popular, they had to break it to make more money.  Thats why they discontinued SmallBusinessServer.   If this practice is so tabooo... Why did MS go the opposite direction with SBS 2011 Premium Cal's?  SBS2011
had DC, Exchange, RDS and Sharepoint,SQL, RemoteWebWorkplace, OWA all working in perfect harmony.  It is an untrue statement then, that it was "allowed but not recommended"
Now you by Server2012 (core + two virtual) and its not enough for all this.
You need at least another $700 for another sever licence to have it all
and who knows if SQL will run on a DC, or Exchange, or R-DERP server.  Another reacherous bridge to cross.
By far, the absloute worse release since Millennium.  The product is not ready for production, we broke our rule of waiting until the first SP1 upgrade for this and Exchange 2013.  Problems with USB drivers and networking running extreamly slow.
Our 2003 SBS server was at least three times as fast, and this server has SAS and SSD drives running.  It can't get out of its own way, and IE10 is the most unstable piece of crap to come out of Redmond.  Open wide and swallow - Mother Microsoft
knows whats best for you.  YOU WILL EAT OUR SLOP AND LEARN TO LIKE IT.   Server2012 AKA  "METRO-SERVER"
Now here I sit after 50 Hours back to back setting up a new R-DERP server 2012, AD, Have my RDP licences in my hand at $100 each, and WTH does Microsoft care if I install it on my DC.  ITS MY DC.  And the cost savings versus the "risk" was
    previously MY decision.
Sure, I can install a couple of Virtual HyperV sessions but they are so tempremental to a power-outage in a small business its not worth it.  I have to double up my server hard drive resources, buy a $800 battery backup unit and make sure to attach
the cable, and even then, if that Bi**H does not shut down properly, one bit goes awry in a VHD or VHDX file and you are screwed.  Restore from lastnights backup and forget about todays work.  Not to mention it will probably take a half day to try
to fix it, then recover it then tell the 30 users they lost a days worth of work.
HYPER-V is for test servers and has no place in a small (micro) business environment. 5-30 users.
Microsoft's solution, buy another server.  Need Exchange?  Buy another server or take the risky cheapskate route and spin up some VHD's.  Might as well put a gun to your head and play russian roulette, at least you know you have a one in six
chance of failure.  With MS, its a 100% failure for a dirty shutdown power loss, motherboard blows, memory goes corrupt in a few years, your conventional method of recovery is gone, and you have some upchucked VHD file to try to recover some of TODAYS
    data from.
    Screw server 2012 forever.
I will sell 2008 and SBS2011 Premium unitl it rots in hell like XP (of which there is NOTHING wrong with for the average, WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK and QUICKBOOKS that all SMB's use.  Its MS $GREED$  Grab the world by the B**ls and squeeze with all
your might to squeeze every dime you can out of *SMB* because big business is going to run thier 2003 Exchange and 2008 servers into ground before they switch to this garbage.
YOU CANNOT INSTALL EXCHANGE 2013 on DC , OR on R-DERP server.
Go buy another server license and server or MOVE TO THE CLOUD and get fleeced every month.
I have 30 DC/R-DERP/Exchange and SBS2011 Premium servers all running for years in perfect harmony, locked down with security so the users can't even WIGGLE with something they are not supposed to work with.  They get their apps, cannot install anything
and all these servers are running just fine behind the firewall and perfectly save.  The track record of this combination is 100% stable and is up 24/7/365 with no problems.  Do yourself a favor and throw this 2012 into the river, you don't need
any weights because it is LEAD and will sink to the bottom by itself.
Why, you ask?  Official is "Its for your protection"  The real reason?  To sell you more $700 server licences.
Maybe for SMB, we start selling Linux NAS Servers, host the Exchange in the cloud and be hearded like cattle to the Microsoft slaughterhouse.  One way or another, you are going to bleed.    A little each month to move to the cloud, or
a small fortune if you want to have it in house.  Microsoft wants it to be more expensive to have in house.  No more buying a server and running it for six years before you upgrade.  They can't have in house servers competing with their cloud,
and small businesses are the low hanging fruit  ripe for the pickin'.

  • [Forum FAQ] Troubleshoot the error "The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode"

    Symptom
RD License server is a key component of RDS. It licenses users to access RDS servers.
After purchase the required RDS CALs, we need to activate the RDS License server and install the purchased RDS CALs. However, during the installation or after installation, we may face errors
    about RDS License.
In most cases, the following error may occur.
    Error:
The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server "Server name" does not have any installed licenses with the following
    attributes:
    Product version: Windows Server 2012
    Licensing mode: Per User
    License type: RDS CALs
    Troubleshooting
    1. Check whether the RD License Configuration is configured properly and there are no Warnings in the Event.
    2. The License Server should be part of 'RD Server License' group in Active Directory Domain Services.
    3. Check if the Licensing Mode is correct.
    - To change the Licensing Mode we can use RD Licensing diagnose, PowerShell cmdlet and Group Policy.
    Via PowerShell cmdlet:
To change the licensing mode on RDSH/RDVH:
    $obj = get-wmiobject -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.ChangeMode(value)
    # Value can be 2 - per Device, 4 - Per user
    Via Group Policy
Path: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> Remote Desktop Session Host -> Licensing
Use the specified RD license servers = FQDN of server name
Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode =
    Per User
However, if issue persists, please provide detailed information and post the question in the
Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services) forum.
Please click to vote if the post helps you. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • Windows 2012 Server Remote Desktop Virtualization + Linux Clients

    Hello!
I wonder if anyone could shed a little light on this.
We want to implement a Windows 2012 Server with Remote Desktop Virtualization for our office, which has around 12 users. Our company has its core apps developed in VB6.0, and those apps use MySQL as their database. We want clients to run Linux, which will
have no other function than to connect and to Windows 2012 Server and display the remote session. Users need to work as usual, as they would in a local version of a Windows Desktop.
Can this be done? If yes, is the Standard version of Windows 2012 Server the best to accomplish this?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Add to Tim, you need to acquire CALs for every user (About 12 in your case).

In addition, although AD is recommended, you can run RDS in a workgroup.
