.idml file wont open - Resolve missing plugin errors in CS5 & 6

Hi everyone, I'm a designer based in the UK.
Ok I designed a 30 page brochure in iD CS6.
I then saved it out as an .idml file as I needed to take it to another desktop computer (mac) running CS5, I did this over several days & it worked fine!
I made a pdf this morning & saved, upon saving it may have crashed & not saved 100%.
When trying to open he file now at either location on both ID CS6/5 I get the same message everyone gets...
"Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."
I NEED this file as its contents are vital. I wanna scream but resisting the temptation thus far!
Can anyone help? Reading through the forum there seems  many options however I cant seem to get any to work? Any help or recovery of this file will be my saving grace!
I'm happy to mail the .idml file off topic for someone to take a look at?
File size is only 8kb
I fear the worst but am holding on for dear life!
Kind regards
Chris

Ok thanks Bob, anyone else for breakfast?
Toast is on the menu... BURNT!
Luckily I still have all the elements & can rip all the text out of the PDF to populate it again, just needs formatting... just a set back!
For future reference, when working on latest versions of iD eg: CS6, then switching back to odler versions CS5 for example... what is the best format to save the files in when flipping from machine to machine/verion to version?
I know dont do it, but I have too due to my comimitments.
I know its not condusive to work on multiple machines via a USB drive... but Im crazy busy!!!
Thanks again Bob

  • Idml file wont open

I can't get this file to open it says that there's a missing plug in .It was saved from cs6 as an idml file but now I can't get that to open. It doesn't say what plug in is missing either for me to try and figure it out? Any suggestions? I tried opening in CS3, cs5.5 cs6 and cs7 and got the same error.

    did anyone resolve this issue?
I am using CC indesign and saving files to IDML.
When i try to reopen that file with CC indesign, the software freezes and pretty much crashes.
Opening it with CS6, there is no issues.
What doesnt make any sense is that when i am saving with CC, i assume i should be able to reopen it with CC.
but it does not allow me to do so.
    Does anyone know the cause?
I can only find information of the opposite of what i am asking. So i assume i am the only one having this stupid issue.
I am unable to contact adobe myself, if someone could please help me resolve this issue!
    Thanks

@slim617 – hard to tell what's going wrong.
What is the exact version of CC?
What is your version of OS?
Did you try to open the IDML file with the current version of CC 2014? v.10.2.0.69

  • Saving as .IDML does not fix missing plugins error message

    Hello,
I am having trouble rectifying a "Missing Plugins" error message.
I create an InDesign file using CS5 and am providing the file for a client of mine who is using CS3. I have saved the file as an .IDML to ensure it is reverse compatible.
When attempting to open the file, my client receives the following Missing Plugins error.
    Missing Plugins:
    WorldReady.InDesignPlugin
    Dynamic Documents.InDesignPlugin
    Conditional Text.InDesignPlugin
My client's version of CS3 and my version of CS5 are both "up to date."
Any additional suggestions to fix this issue so that I can provide a file my client can open?
    Many thanks in advance.

If you have CS4 you can open the IDML there and export it to INX but to
expect a perfect translation would be a stretch.

Sounds like something has been added into the Reader folder. I would recommend uninstalling, running http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html, removing any left over parts of the Reader folder (this might have been the problem), reboot, and reinstall. Hopefully that solves the problem. For future question about Reader, you should consider asking in the Reader forum, this is not it.

  • I have recently updated my CC programs to the latest version and now all of my files wont open by default into their respective programs, only if I open the program and go to file open and open the file from there. How can I fix this?

I have recently updated my CC programs to the latest version (CC2014) and now all of my files wont open by default into their respective programs, only if I open the program and go to file>open and open the file from there. How can I fix this?
I have tried 'Open with' and the version of the program now installed on my computer isn't even suggested as an option and when I browse for it, the file wont open with it anyway

On Windows (don't know about Mac), the latest version will always take over the file association, and become the default for indd files. It's impossible to change it.
But there is a plugin for ID that makes this possible. Never tried it myself.

As a happy user of the Matrox RT.X2 for many years, and later an equally happy user of a Matrox MXO2, I can say from experience that it is highly unlikely that this problem has anything to do with the Matrox hardware!

  • How can I save an indd file as an idml file without opening the document?

I cannot open an InDesign file that was made in a later version of InDesign because I don't have the right plugins. How can I convert this indd file to an idml file without opening it?

Well..... sort of depends on your version.
If you have any version as part of CC subscription, the latest updates are supposed to be using a cloud-based service to generate the IDML for you so that you can open the newer files seamlessly.

    you're welcome.
p.s. there's one more thing he can try. if he has a working swf, he can trying decompiling it to get a working fla or, even if that fails, he will be able to get a non-corrupt fla whose assets can be extracted.

  • Why am I getting missing plugin error in CS4 Indesign when trying to open indd or PDF files?

    Any help would be appreciated?

PDF files cannot be opened in InDesign.
InDesign files which are not able to be opened might come from a newer version, you might ask for an IDML file, but better to upgrade to the same version.

  • Trying to package InDesign file, gets missing plugin error

I've been trying to package this magazine and it keeps telling me i'm missing this external plugging called 'asset management.InDesignPlugin'. when i try googling it i can't find anything.

If Peter's solution does not help, here's another way, because the missing plugin might just be incorrectly registered or not at all:
    1. Find the location of your Indesign preferences file, copy it to a safe place, delete the original.
    2. Start Indesign - it will re-register all plugins. Close Indesign again.
    3. Write back the saved prefs file to the original location.

  • Migrated files wont open or error msg

I used migration asst to migrate files from Imac power pcG3 (OS 10.3.9 and classic 9.2.2 installed) to my new imac G5 intel. I selected " move files and folders only" but everything migrated. When i try to open old files, some open, others give msg " this file is locked or in use. Would you like to open a copy?". These are appleworks WP files. when i try to move any migrated file to the trash, i get msg "finder requires you to type your password".
I installed office:mac 2004 on new computer. since migration, it hangs up, cant close documents, have to force quit.
    G5 intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Did you set the same username/password combo you used on the old iMac on the new iMac? If not, those belong to the old user, which should be available on the new machine, and not the new user, that's why you need to authenticate to trash them. Since you just got the new machine, you might consider restoring the new machine to the factory condition, using the same username/password combo on the old one, if you still have the old iMac, and using the Migration Assistant again.
As for the AW files, did you create them using the OS 9 version? Since the Intel-Macs can't run classic, you're probably out of luck opening them. If you still have the old iMac, you should open the AW files with the OS X version 6.2.8, convert them, and copy them over to the new machine. Then try to open them with the OS X version.
