IDML files freeze up program, fonts won't show, exporting very slow
I was contacted by someone from Adobe, then case was closed before I could get back to them with details
Case #0186178987
case was closed before resolution was reached. How do I re-open this? I tried the Customer Support Portal but it did not open the case - just logged it as closed again.
I have PC, 64 bit, and am Creative Cloud team member.
I am having issues with InDesign CC 2014:
Updated program 2 weeks ago. Uninstalled an older version of InDesign yesterday, now InDesign files do not have the icon (they are blank) and computer does not recognize program to use when trying to open Indd files with Explorer, but they will open when in InDesign & use "file" "Open", etc.
Oh, and trashed preferences yesterday with no result either.
I am experiencing:
1. freezing when trying to open IDML files, have to use task manager to close program
2. fonts that are on my system (PC) not being automatically linked when InDesign files are opened and
3. extended length of time to export files to PDF (last one took 13 minutes).
Any ideas would be welcome!

My IDML file saved in Indesign CC won't open in Indesign 6
Hello. I am on trial of Indesign CC, and exported a file to an IDML trying to open it on the school computer since they only have previous versions of Indesign.
When I try to open my file that I worked on at home in Indesign CC, it won't open in Indesign 6.
The pop up message I get is "Cannot open the file xxx.idml." Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."
The file IS saved as IDML
The file isn't open in another application
I don't know how I can fix this issue. Could anybody help me out? I've tried both .indd and .idml saved under CC, but it refuses to open in prior versions.
Thank you very much in advance.Hi, I too am having this issue. Did you get anywhere with resolving the problem?
Many thanks in advance

Fonts won't show on an xServe running OS X Tiger 10.4.9 server
When I copy fonts onto the xserve for the clients to access, they wont show up as fonts. they seem to lose their file structure and appear as 0k. However when I copy files from one workstation mac to another on the network, they appear fine. anyone come across this and know the answer or point me in the right direction?
Hi:
Where are you copying these fonts exactly? By that I mean when you are copying Client to Client where from and where to? Same question applies for Client to Server. -
I used pages for brochure documents and copied pictures to them, after I downloaded the upgrade the documents only show the pages logo on the pages from the opening screen. Once you click on them the pictures appear but it takes me ages to do this so they all show. HELP
Tupelo, there are many, many threads here in the Apple Discussions about the many issues with Pages 5, and the multitude of features that have been lost in this supposed "upgrade." Like Jerry, I'd recommend you get yourself back to Pages 4.3 until Apple comes to their senses.
So...first off: do you have Pages 4.3 still installed? If you do, it will be in an iWorks '09 folder in your Applications folder. If you bought Pages 4.3 on its own from the App store, your copy of Pages 4.3 will have been overwritten by the new Pages 5.
If you don't have the iWork '09 folder in your Applications folder, do you have a backup with it installed there? If so, you'll want to revert to that version. I believe that you can drag and drop the older version of Pages (and Keynote and Numbers if you have those as well); I'd recommend that you create a folder called "iWorks '09" in your Applications folder and stick them in that.
Also, if you have a reasonably current backup, you will be able to recover your documents created in Pages 4.3. Whatever you do, do NOT open them in Pages 5 - once you do, the features you may have used will be gone and reverting won't recover them.
You may also be able to revert to earlier versions, once you get Pages 4.3 back on your HD/or locate it and so you can use it to open Pages documents. In order to try that, in Pages 5, go to File->Export->Pages 4.3 document and then close Pages 5, and open Pages 4.3. Open the document you just exported. Now go to File->Revert and see if you can find an earlier, pre-Pages 5 version. If you can do that, you should be able to fairly painlessly recover all your messed up docs. Of course, if you have a current backup, it may be faster to simply recover the undamaged originals from the backup.
Pages 5, if installed on your system, will be the default for opening all .pages documents. You therefore have to do something to prevent that (Get Info and Change All won't stick). Either move Pages 5 entirely off your HD (and to move it, you'll need to put it into the trash first, as simply dragging it somewhere just creates an alias - once you drag it into the Trash, you can drag it to an external drive, for instance) OR you can create a disk image by sticking it in a folder and then using Disk Utility->File->New->Disk Image from Folder. Toss the Pages.app (v 5) in the trash and then any time you want to open Pages 5, simply click on the disk image. It turns itself back into a disk image when you quit. And it won't be the default app for .pages docs when it's a disk image. Or you can simply toss Pages 5 in the Trash entirely. The only reason I've kept my iWork 2013 apps as disk images is in case Apple actually does upgrade them to recover the lost features and perhaps changes its freebie policy along the way. Or...someone might send me a Pages 5 document. They can't be opened in Pages 4.3, so I'd need it then. -
It is official DVD.

but no players can play this stuff.
Does this mean Macbook can't play a proper DVD?

I have been a firefox user for 15 years. lately my browser has become really slow and freezes everytime. my bing and google browsers are not having problems
Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information such as bookmarks and History.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.
Also try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
* [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
* [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Fonts won't display in CS3-- particularly Photoshop & Illustrator
Hello Everyone,
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide for this question. Recently my laptop with my installed softwares crashed. Luckily I was able to recover most everything and restored it on my newer iMac.
One of the few software that didn't play nice was CS3, so I had to re-install it. Now, many of the fonts won't show up. I'm doing a logo for a client and I need some fonts but fonts from the following- New Peninim, Corsiva Hebrew, Ariel Hebrew and/or Raanana-- don't appear after you engage the Type tool. What shows up in both Photoshop and especially Illustrator is a square box with nothing in it.
I've gone to MANY of the help columns on line and followed 4 or 5 different "solutions"-- nothing seems to work. I even, against my suspicions, called the Adobe customer service and the best they could offer was to post a question here if my answer was not apparent.
So, does anyone have an opinion on the matter? Bearing in mind that I've put fonts in the Adobe folder, reset characters and a few other things since yesterday.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
AndreIf you have the fonts installed and activated and they are not functioning, you may need to clear your font caches.
Are you using any font management software? Can you confirm that the fonts are active? If you're not aware of any font management, open up Font Book (applications -> Font Book) and see if you see the fonts in there. If they are in the list, are they active? If they are not in the list, you need to add them there (I think just by dragging them from the finder) and activate them. Not being a Font Book user I'm not sure, but you may need to restart Illustrator to see the newly activated fonts.
If you don't have the fonts active, your type will be displayed in the default font (Myriad, unless you changed it) which likely doesn't have the hebrew characters, thus all you see is the squares indicating missing characters. -
Okay, that was a long title. Sorry about that.
Longer version now. The font Janson Text is an old Type 1 Postscript font. If I make a new document in InDesign CC2014, this font is completely available to me. HOWEVER, if I open a legacy file that uses this same font, it shows up with the usual pink highlighting.
I know the font is available to InDesign, because I made a new test document and set type with it.
If I try using the Type > Find Font.. option to replace the 'missing' typefaces, InDesign won't let me, not recognizing the font that I just used in the new test document.
I just tried exporting the defective file as an IDML file, then opening the IDML file. The font is now working properly.
This is a real problem, as the file I'm trying to open is a book that we need to reprint. I now have to go through it page by page to see if any linebreaks have changed.
WHAT CAUSES THIS, please? There is one way its getting fixed. Once I update my Adobe Illustrator CC to Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 it is further allowing me to go into the system folder and allocate the font to the file so that it can replace it. My only concern now is that our MAC partners who will receive these files back from us have Adobe CS6. We will down save it to CS6 but I hope they won't experience any font issues because of us using CC 2014? Any light you can shed on this?

This kind of crash at that location often means a bad font, or so I've been told.
This is actually an incredibly common failure, and it is much much more generic than bad fonts. It could be caused by bad fonts, but it could be caused by almost anything.
This indicaets a program has tried to defeference a pointer whose value is zero. That is, some function was passed a reference to some part of the program's memory (typically pointing to some data structure. It could be a number, a string, an TexttFrame, another function, a file, really anyting), and instead of that reference being an address, it was zero. And the function didn't check to see if thie address was valid, it just tried to read from address zero. Which, under many operating systems, including OSX, generates a trap and causes a crash.
So it's necessary to look at the stack trace to see what function generated the error. And that function was probably called be some other function by anothre function etc., and the fault is probably further upstream. If, e.g., the IDML export code calls the system's fprintf() function with a null pointer, the crash might be in fprintf(), but it would be the fault of the IDML export code.
Sometimes the faulting address might be more unique. Like if the pointer not zero but say, 3. There probably aren't too many cases where a pointer gets initialized to 3 by accident, so it might usually be the same thing. But address zero is incredibly common. (So are fun ones like 0xdeadbeef and 0xfafababe and 0xcafecafe).
Cheers. I wonder what happened with bizcomm... -
I have files that are freezing my programs (adobe; after effect and photoshop, as well as maxon cinema 4d). Whenever I try to import ANY file from within the program it doen't even let me select the file I need before freezing. I have moved all files off my desktop and into my dropbox, and it now allows me to import files/search for files on the desktop but NOT dropbox, once I go to dropbox it freezes again. I am assuming there are files within dropbox now that are crashing my programs. The problem is I have a lot of files in there and would like to remove the corrupt ones so that I can use my programs without freezing. Is there a way to find the exact files causing the crash?
This has happened a couple of times and each time I have to move all my files off my desktop, so there must be a type of file doing this, I just don't know what files they are.
Mac Book Pro 15" running OSX 10.9
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1024 MB
ANY help would be greatly appreciated! It is making it really hard to get work done. THANKS!This error sounds to me like you have/had BootCamp Windows installed and then removed, posible ?
If so (and even if not so), try restating your MBA while holding down the alt/option-key until you get to the Boot Selection Screen.
Choose to boot OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and set your OSX to be the default.
Hope it helps

Why won't my unzipped and rezipped IDML file open in InDesign?
I'm a developer working on an IDML based project.
My application opens an IDML file, inflates the contents and (for the moment, without making any changes), deflates them again.
The result is a file which:
a) Opens fine in any zip application
b) My code can then reopen without problems.
InDesign, however, throws the following error:
"Cannot open the file "filename.idml". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be miussing, or the file may be open in another application."
I have verified that the file is not open in another app, and that no plug ins are involved.
InDesign will open the original IDML file that it exported, so there's no general error.
I assume the issue is with the zip container not being UCF compliant, and I'm trying to diagnose what the problem might be.
My question(s):
Has anyone been through this and do they have any suggestions or guidance?
Is there any way I can get InDesign to tell me in more detail why it cannot open the file?
What are the most likely issues with the container?
I have inspected both the original file and the output file using Winzip, and I append the results of a detailed diagnostic on each below. The only difference I can see is that some files in the original are not compressed (they are simply stored in the zip container), but the UCF specification seems to suggest that a container can contain either compressed or normal files, so I don't see why this should be a problem. Would this cause InDesign to have a problem?
Many thanks in advance for any assistance. Zip file diagnostics follow.

Din font won't display in pdf file since December update to version 11.0.10
I upgraded my Acrobat to version 11.0.10 just before the Christmas break. Din font is my corporate typeface and I used it yesterday to create an invoice in Mac Pages only to discover that I cannot view the pdf as the font won't display in Acrobat. And to add to the problem my clients who are using the same version of Acrobat are unable to view the font either on the pdf. It all worked fine before the upgrade.
What can be done to rectify the problem? I need to fix this asap.
This error message appears when I try and open the file "Cannot extract the embedded font 'DQPJNL+DIN-Medium'. S"
The DQPJNL bit changes depending on the file being opened but essential Din font won't display.Hi,
Please check if DIN font is embedded in your PDF by going to File > Properties > Fonts
If no, then you might need to go to 'Tools > Print Production > Preflight'
Then, open the PDF fixups section, click on Embed fonts fixup and choose 'Analyze and fix button'.
Please check and let me know if you are able to view the font now.

InDesign CS5.5 freezes when creating an idml file
Good Day All,
I have been using inDesign since it started and have never come across this problem. I have a file that I intially created in CS4, converted to CS5 and now CS5.5. I have been trying to convert it to an IDML file and EVERYTIME it hangs and freezes. It actually produces a file but non-useable. I have been struggling with this for the last two days.
I have;
removed cache recovery files
looked at all styles to ensure optical kerning wasn't on (seems like a common problem)
rebuilt the file and renamed it
replaced Adobe Garamond Pro with Garamond Premier Pro
tried it on another machine
Re-installed CS5.5
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with CS5.5 the document is about 11 pages long and packaged and zipped is 34.0Mb
I am starting to pull my hair out here!! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!!
CurtisThanks for the reply, but it didn't work. I tried to move the jpg but as soon as I get to that page or click on it in the links panel, I automatically get an error code: 3 message and then the software just cascades from there. When I try to relink the graphic in the links panel nothing happens. I even get an error when trying to unembed the graphic. I've tried just about everything. I'm think that if maybe I could just delete that entire page without actually looking at the page, I may be able to recover the rest of the document. This has been one of the biggest headaches I've ever had to deal with as far as software goes and I deal with it every day (I'm a developer). Any other suggestions are more than welcome.
Oh, and I wasn't sure how to "open as a copy." I made a copy of the file and tried to open it but it reacted the same as the original. Perhaps I misunderstood your meaning?
Thanks again for your help. -
Indesign CS4 in Mac 10.6.8, sometimes won't show files, sometimes won't show tools. Like I click to open a file from the finder, and Indesign makes that temporary file in the finder, but won't display the pages. At other times I can have the pages displayed but I can't open the tools such as the colour swatches or the paragraphy styles. This all happens at random, although I suspect it is more likely to happen if I have been working in some other program such as Typestyler or Aperture, and come back to Indesign. Kind of like Indesign gets snooty at me working in another program.
I've done the thing of dicing the preferences, but so far the only workaround that has worked so far is quitting and restarting the program. I don't remember this happening so much until recently, in other words the problem seems to be getting more frequent.
But I am wondering if this has happened with anyone else and if there are any other suggestions for avoiding it.
Back in the good old days you would reinstall PageMaker and that would settle things for a while. But now I don't know if a program like Indesign CS4 actually gets corrupted and if it does I don't know what to do. Does the program get corrupted? And should you reinstall a fresh copy? If it's a good idea to reinstall the program how do you do that? Is it possible to download a fresh copy? And if I do, what happens when the fresh copy phones home? I've tangled with the Adobe Microsoft corporation before when Indesign phoned home and got a crossed line.Other things to try:
Examine your specific version of Optima by going to Type menu > Find Font, clicking on the Optima font and choosing More Info (I think) and find the specific version number. See if you can uninstall the font and reinstall another Optima font with a different, preferably newer version number. There has (historically) been a bad version of Optima floating around for years. Maybe you have it.
Use a free utility like FontNuke or FontFinagler to get your Mac OS to reset its font plists. Sometimes that makes the OS feel better.
Use the built-in Disk Utility to repair file permissions. You never know.
Export your old document out to IDML and reopen that resulting idml file back into a new freshly written INDD file. This might remove internal database corruptions.
All these are chicken-soup things to try and they might be good for you.

Having problems opening IDML file in CS5
Hi Everyone,
Can someone offer some assistance?
My colleague is on CS5.5 and i'm on CS5. She created an IDML file of a document we're working on and i've tried to open it. However when opening it, it freezes at the same point everytime.(when importing links) The only way i can get out of InDesign is through Task Manager. Any help would be appreciated.
Chris.First thing you need to do is empty the InDesign Recovery folder in case your forced program termination has left you with corrupt data that ID is trying to recover each time it starts up. By default the Recovery folder is in the same directory as your InDesign SavedData file, but the location is changeable in the application preferences. If you haven't deliberatley moved it, you'll find the location information to find it in the post about resetting prefs here: Replace Your Preferences
Now on to whether the file will open. It sounds like ID is looking for links in a location that is inaccessible. Open ID without attempting to open a file and Edit > Preferences... Go to the File Handling tab and uncheck the boxes to check and relink when opening a file, then try to open the .idml. I would wait up to 15 or 20 minutes before presuming the file is damaged -- I've seen strange things where users have done stuff like embedded hundreds of images, and it ust takes a long time to parse the file sometimes.
If it still won't open, it's most likely damaged. Ask your colleague to send it to you again, but to zip it first for protection in transit.
