Idoc processing best practices - use of RBDAPP01 and RBDMANI2

We are having performance problems in the processing of inbound idocs.  The message type is SHPCON, and transaction volume is very high.  I am a functional consultant, not an ABAP developer, but will try my best to explain our current setup.
1)     We have a number of message variants for the inbound SHPCON message, almost all of which are set to trigger immediately upon receipt under the Processing by Function Module setting.
2)      For messages that fail to process on the first try, we have a batch job running frequently using RBDMANI2.
We are having some instances of the RBDMANI2 almost every day which get stuck running for a very long period of time.  We frequently have multiple SHPCON idocs coming in containing the same material number, and frequently have idocs fail because the material in the idoc has become locked.  Once the stuck batch job is cancelled and the job starts running again normally, the materials unlock and the failed idocs begin processing.  The variant for the RBDMANI2 batch job is currently set with a packet size of 1 and without parallel processing enabled.
I am trying to determine the best practice for processing inbound idocs such as this for maximum performance in a very high volume system.  I know that RBDAPP01 processes idocs in status 64 and 66, and RBDMANI2 is used to reprocess idocs in all statuses.  I have been told that setting the messages to trigger immediately in WE20 can result in poor performance.  So I am wondering if the best practice is to:
1)     Set messages in WE20 to Trigger by background program
2)     Have a batch job running RBDAPP01 to process inbound idocs waiting in status 64
3)     Have a periodic batch job running RBDMANI2 to try and clean up any failed messages that can be processed
I would be grateful if somebody more knowledgeable than myself on this can confirm the best practice for this process and comment on the correct packet size in the program variant and whether or not parallel processing is desirable.  Because of the material locking issue, I felt that parallel processing was not desirable and may actually increase the material locking problem.  I would welcome any comments.
This appeared to be the correct area for this discussion based upon other discussions.  If this is not the correct area for this discussion, then I would be grateful if the moderator could re-assign this discussion to the correct area (if possible) or let me know the best place to post it.  Thank you for your help.

Hi Bob,
Not sure if there is an official best practice, but the note 1333417 - Performance problems when processing IDocs immediately does state that for the high volume the immediate processing is not a good option.
I'm hoping that for SHPCON there is no dependency in the IDoc processing (i.e. it's not important if they're processed in the same sequence or not), otherwise it'd add another complexity level.
In the past for the high volume IDoc processing we scheduled a background job with RBDAPP01 (with parallel processing) and RBDMANIN as a second step in the same job to re-process the IDocs with errors due to locking issues. RBDMANI2 has a parallel processing option, but it was not needed in our case (actually we specifically wouldn't want to parallel-process the errors to avoid running into a lock issue again). In short, your steps 1-3 are correct but 2 and 3 should rather be in the same job.
Also I believe we had a designated server for the background jobs, which helped with the resource availability.
As a side note, you might want to confirm that the performance issues are caused only by the high volume. An ABAPer or a Basis admin should be able to run a performance trace. There might be an inefficiency in the process that could be adding to the performance issue as well.
Hope this helps.

  • What is the BEST practice - use BO or Java Object in process as webservice

    Hi All,
I have my BP published as web service. I have defined My process input & output as BOs. My BP talks to DB through DAO layer(written in JAVA) which has Java objects. So I have BO as well as java Objects. Since I am collecting user input in BO, I have to assign individual values contained in BO to Java object's fields.
I want to reduce this extra headache & want to use either of BO or Java object.I want to know What is the best practice - use BO or Java object as process input. If it is BO,how I can reuse BOs in Java?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks,
    Sujata P. Galinde

    Hi Mark,
Thanks for your response. I also wanted to use java object only. When I use java object as process input argument..it is fine. But when I try to create Process web service, I am getting compilation error - "data type not supported".....
To get rid of this error, I tried to use heir (BO inheriting from java class). But while invoking process as web service, it is not asking for fields that are inherited from java class.
Then I created Business Object with a field of type java class... This also is not working. While sending request, it is giving an error that - field type for fields from java class not found.
Conclusion - not able to use java object as process(exposed as web service) input argument .
What is the Best & feasible way to accomplist the task - Process using DAO in Java & exposed as web service.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sujata

  • Get Idoc Types Processed by Jobs Running Programs RBDAPP01 or RBDMANI2

Hi Everyone! I would just like to ask if there is a way I can identify all background jobs which are processing a specific idoc type in SAP?
For example, I want to get the Jobs that are processing inbound idoc type WMMBXY using program RBDAPP01 or RBDMANI2.
Is there a way to extract this information?
    Thanks in advance!

Vincent, we have a conservative approach RE those programs that re-process IDOCs in pending or error status : we do not define those jobs with open selections, instead we are specific in terms of message type and partner where applicable.  We also set a limit in the number or attempts on a failed IDOC by setting a 'rolling start date'  (like current date - 7).  Besides audit considerations about lingering processes,  you also need to take into account the impact of this process on the tale size. Each time the job runs and the IDOC fails, a status record will be added to the EDIDS table for each of those IDOC.  If you do not pay attention, you may end up with large amounts of data. This is not only going to unplease your BASIS and DB administrator but eventually put in jeopardy your archiving process (wchich could lead to a system crash !!).
We usually aslo complement those jobs with a status change step (moving from error to no further processing) ; the date parameter can be set to something like anythiing with a creation date > current date + 3 months
To come back to your question : SM37 using the program name as parameter will help you find the associated jobs, but you might need to look into the step(s) and associated variant to get the messages those jobs / steps are processing

  • Favorite / Best Practice / Useful MTE's ??!?!

    Hi Everyone,
I'm setting up monitoring on a multi-system architecture; i've got all of the agents working and reporting to my CEN. I've even got the auto-response email all set up, great!
I've been looking around for any best practice on what MTE's (out of the 100's there!) I should be setting up virtual and rule based nodes for.
So come on everyone...what are your favorite MTE's. Of course I'm looking at Dialog Response Times, and Filesystem %'s -- but any other tips? hints? tricks? Any neat MTE's out there that you love to check.
A best practice / useful guide would be brilliant?
    Thanks in advance.

  • MMO best practice. Download music and heavy files to users hard disk?

MMO best practice. Download music and heavy files to users hard disk?
I have just downloaded a Hello Kitty MMO app for research (for my kid of course).
I am developping my English teaching app with LOADS of classical music, mp3 sentences and heavy background bgs. Would the best idea be for client to download these to their hardisk ie I would not need to stream them and therefore save a fortune on bandwidth charges from my ISP???
    Cheers

I see what you mean ie: they have to get the file to their computer one way or another BUT
    a. If they are going to repeatedly use that file ie: a custom cursor or classical piece of music every week when they log on then it would be better for them to have it on their hardisk wouldn't it? If not, they would have to download it every time they log on. I take it that's why the hello kitty site makes you download 130 megas so you have everything on your hardisk, ie: you will be reusing all those assets MANY times in the future. The experience wil be very FAST as you have it on your local disk and needn't have to wait for streaming.

  • What are the best practices for Database management and performance tuning?

    Hello,
I want to ensure that I am using the best practices for managing and maintaining our Database.
Is there any documentation out there that outlines how to maintain and ensure top performance out of our database?
    Thank you!
    John Sefton

I appreciate the responses, however this is not the information I am looking for.
I am specificaly looking for best practices invloving the managment and performance tuning.
Example: are their tools that I can install that will monitor the size and response time of the database and alert me if there is degradation in performance?
Are there specific periodic activities I should be doing to garuntee that my database will continue to function that way it is supposed to?
Or is this a fire and forget solution that does not need this attention?

    What Function Module? i.e. IDOC_OUTPUT_SHPMNT??
Does the SAP Transpotation Module have to be configured for this to be implemented?
Your comments are greatly appreciated, we have until Nov 1 to be compliant?

    Good Morning,
While I did not get any responses from my question, yes, I was able to determine what needed to be configured.   I hope the below will help you: This is for SAP ECC6
The output application for the 753 Routing Request is "V7"
    The output type is "SEDI"
    Transmission medium is "6"
The Basic Idoc type is "Shipmnt05"
when setting up your Partner Profile (WE20) add:Message Partner Role "SP" with Message type "SHPADV', Message coed "753", Basic Type "SHPMNT05", Message Control add Application "V7", Message type "SEDI", Process Code "SHPM".
also http://scn.sap.com/thread/698368 pages 14 and 15 were helpful.
I have not configured the Inbound 754.  For now the inbound 754 Routing Instructions will be emailed to our traffic department.
    Thank you,
    Have a great day,

  • Best Practice for Image placement and Anchored Frames for use in Robohelp 9

    Hi,
I'm looking for the best practices in how to layout my images in Framemaker 10 so that they translate correctly to Robohelp 9.  I currently have images inside of Anchored frames that "Run into" the right side of my text. I've adjusted the size of the anchored frame so that my text flows correctly around the image. Everything looks good in Framemaker! Yeah! The problem is that when I link my Framemaker document to Robohelp, the text does not flow around my image in the same manner. On a couple of Robohelp screens the image is running into the footer. I'm wondering if I should be using tables in Framemaker in order to get the page layout that I'm looking for. Also, I went back and forth...is this a Framemaker question or is this a Robohelp question. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is "best practice" to set up and configure a Mac Mini server with dual 1 TB drives, using RAID 1?

I have been handed a new, out of the box, Mac Mini server.  Has two 1 TB drives in it.  Contractor suggested RAID 1 for the set up.  I have done some research
and found out that in creating the software RAID, this takes away the recovery partition, so I have been reading up on how to create a recovery "disk" using a thumb drive.  this part of the operation I am comfortable with, but there are other issues/concerns that I have.
Basically, what is the "best practice" to setup the Mini, configure the RAID and then start the server.  I am assuming the steps would be something like this:
    1) start up the Mini and run through the normal Maverick setup/config - keep it plain and vanilla
    2) grab a copy of the Server app and store it offline in a safe place
    3) perform the RAID configuration / reinstall of OS X Maverick using the recovery tools
    4) copy down and start the server app
This might be considered a very simplified version of this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4886 - Mac mini server (Late 2012 and Mid 2011): How to install OS X Server on a software RAID volume), with the biggest difference being I grab a copy of the Server App off of the mini before I reinstall, since I did not purchase it from the App store, but rather it came with the mini.
Is there a best practice /  how-to tutorial somewhere that I can follow/learn from? Am I on the right track or headed for a train wreck?
    thanks in advance

I think this article will answer your question. Hope this helps: http://wisebyte.blogspot.com/2014/01/best-configuration-for-mac-mini-server.html

  • Best Practices for image layout and positioning using anchored frames in Framemaker 10

    Hi,
I'm looking for the best practices in how to layout my images in Framemaker 10 so that they translate correctly to Robohelp 9. I currently have images inside of Anchored frames that "Run into" the right side of my text. I've adjusted the size of the anchored frame so that my text flows correctly around the image. Also, I went back and forth...is this a Framemaker question or is this a Robohelp question. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I could offer some advice, rather than simply adding to your question. I think there is something odd that happens with anchored frames.
I have been going through fits trying to figure out why the placement of my graphics shifts when I run them through Frame 10-to-RoboHelp 9 conversion. The placement in our books is flush left to the body text area. However, when they convert, some are flush left, some are centered, and a very few are flush right. My boss is very unhappy with me, as I have been unable to figure out why this is happening. I didn't create these files, so I don't know if it's something that goes back to how the graphics were initially imported. But I can't figure out why everything looks right in Framemaker, with the frame attached to an anchor tag, etc. but the placement goes hinky when they convert.
Any insights are appreciated. I'm wondering if it's going to come down to deleting them and recreating the graphic frame.

  • 2nd Mac - best practices using iPhoto on both?

    Hi -
I just got a new MacBook and have an iMac that is still the "hub" of my photo library. It is, in fact, about a 180 GB iPhoto library. I know that I can't sync libraries between Macs (a shame - someone should come up with a way to that assuming they haven't already!) so I'm just looking for any best practices?
I got the MacBook to be able to work on some photos while on the road - I can at least work on post processing in Photoshop, etc. I'm thinking now that my best strategy is to possibly work with the images on my MacBook, importing them into the iPhoto library if desired. Then use my Photo sharing service - Phanfare - to "sync" them? It requires me to download them on the other side and pull them again into the iPhoto Library on the iMac?
I don't use the Mobile Me Gallery but I suppose that would be another way to have access to them on the alternate computer?
Any other best practices or suggestions?
    Thx!

So, if there are times when I'm not home to access my external drive, then going with the two libraries is the best solution, yes?
Perhaps, but you can get very small and portable external HDs these days.
I'm not sure though if I should really make both a 180 GB iPhoto library, do you? It is a back up true, but seems like a chunk to move
But you only do it once. The first time. Thereafter you're simply updating the other with the changes.
At least maybe I could split into pictures from 2009 - 2010 and have that library for both my iMac and the MacBook. I very rarely access before then (only if I need something specific) so then I could access that via the iMac exclusively?
    That would be viable.
I would maintain a +full Library+ on the Desktop, the mobile versions a Smaller subset.
I'm sort of ruling out the one library on the external solution because it eliminates the possibility of being remote -
As I said above you can get tiny portable drives...
unless there is some swanky Login to My Computer or something that works with a Mac that can go remotely to my computer and then to my external drive.
    *_This_* might help.
    Regards

  • Deadline Branche in Correlation Process - Best Practice

    Hello,
I have an integration process with a correlation - there is a asynchronous send step which activates a correlation and afterwards an asynchronous receive step that uses that correlation.
Furthermore I have a deadline branch to cancel the process after 24 hours.
    My question now is:
There could be (rare) cases where a message arrives later than 24 hours, so according to my understanding the received message will block the inbound queue as no active correlation can be found anymore. Is this correct? How can I avoid this situation, I guess a blocked queue would also block other messages that are sent to the integration process?
What would be best practice to handle such a scenario? I could leave the process intance open for 1 month, however this might have a significant impact on system performance.....
    Thank you for your advice.

There could be (rare) cases where a message arrives later than 24 hours, so according to my understanding the received
essage will block the inbound queue as no active correlation can be found anymore
No correlation found error will occur only when the BPM instance is running and the message tries to enter into the relevant receive step (not the first one)
However when you say the process is cancelled you need not worry about the message going into the queue and blocking the BPM queue.
    Regards,
    Abhishek.

  • Re engineering of existed process / Best Practice (customization)

    Hi all of you,
We are implementing SAP ECC 6.0 for one of our clients. Client is asking us to compare their existed business process with Best Practice / standard process and based on the result, asking to prepare a GAP analysis between the existed and best practice for his business.
SAP itself is a best practice in the respective domains / business processes. By implementing SAP ERP,  the client will have best practice for his business processes as I know. But thing is, how can I explain to the client that SAP has given the best practice and based on which, client will consider the SAP practice as Best Practice for the business??
    Please give me a solution
    Regards,

    f l,
I'm not sure deleting keys from the registry is ever a best practice, however Xcelsius has listings in:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Business Objects > Xcelsius
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Business Objects > Suite 12.0 > Xcelsius
The current user folder holds temporary settings, such as how you've modified your interface.
The local machine folder holds more important information.
As always, it's recommended that you backup the registry and/or create a restore point before modifying or deleting any keys.
As for directories, the only directory Xcelsius uses is the one you install to.  It also places some install logs in the temp directory, but they have no effect on the application.
