IDSM-2 Hot-swapable?

Hi Guys,
I need some information!
Is the IDSM2 hot-swappable in a Cisco 6509 Chassis?
Recently I installed the IDSM2 on an Cisco 6509 Chassis (with two Sup720s in SSO mode). But chassis rebooted specifying that the
"%C6K_PLATFORM-2-PEER_RESET: RP is being reset by the SP"
After rebooting the secondary SUP became active.
Can anyone give an explaination for this?
Also Please do let me know whether the IDSM is hot-swappable or not?
Prompt response will be appreciated.
Thanks
Anand

If that the case, maybe it could be other things, even to the extend of bugs.
As you're saying, the blade is properly shutdown and removed from the slot. This make the active SupEngine to go down, and standby takes over.
With fresh idsm2 (not configured), this shouldn't happened. From my experience, I can always remove and put back the module without any issues with SupEngine.
BTW, IDSM2 is confirmed hot-swap, and shouldn't caused any issue to the switch

  • Is the ACE module is hot swapable?

can anybody confirm the ACE service module is hot swapable and either it can be placed in slot 5 in 6509 switch.

    Hi,
The 6500 series supports hot-swappable modules and you can hot-swap the ACE blade in theory but you should shut it down prior to removal to avoid loss of data.
Slot 5 in a 6509 is reserved for the Sup720.
    See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/services_modules/ace/installation/note/aceinote.html

  • SATA on K8N Neo2 Plat nForce3 Ultra - Hot Swappable?

I'm thinking about adding two SATA drives to my system. I won't be using RAID.
I remember reading that it is best to use SATA sockets 3 and 4, rather than 1 and 2. Can somebody explain to me why that is.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul.

    Hello Gents,
instead of starting a new thread here, and since it is on the Sata ports, has anyone been able to make them Hot swapable??? Of course Windows sees them as a Hot Swap, which leads me to this question, I have an Addonics Swap tray installed on SATA 1 A Mirrowed Raid on 2 and 3. The swap tray is for Data Backup, when you attemp to stop the drive, you get the dreaded Volume drive in use, try agian later, even though nothing is being written to it. I was told that this is a Board issue with the drivers for the Nforce chip.

  • Hot Swappable drive case

I am doing a little upgrade to help me with backing up my computer etc.
When I was building my computer Baz Studio North suggested I consider this hot swappable drive thingie:
SUPERMICRO CSE-M35T-1B Black 5 Bay Hot-Swapable SATA HDD Enclosure
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405&cm_re=supermicro-_-17-121- 405-_-Product
I have one OS drive and 4 - 1TB drives in my raid.
Is that Micro Hot swappable still a good choice, or are there others.
I will be buying 2 additional 1 TB drives for backup and still, for now keep my raid as four 1 TB drives.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Rowby
I have been using the Chembro Enclosures for a while Now, Very easy to install, keeps the HD's at low temps.
Since I am using 4 enclosures the fan sound was way to loud for me, so I replaced the fans for quite ones. With one enclosure the fan sound might not be to bad.
Also the sata connectors on the rear of the case look a lot better insulated than the supermicro.

  • Definition of "hot swap"

I am looking at a SATA enclosure with Hot Swap bays. I believe that means I can pull out a drive without powering down the whole enclosure, but do I still have to unmount the drive from my desktop?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, John & Dave!
I read (at the Wiebetech site) that it still may be good practice to power off a hot-swap device beforehand when it's practicable to do so, to preclude the possiblility of arcing across the wrong pins at the connection point, which is suspected to be one of the many causes of FireWire port failure, for example, even though FireWire devices are indeed hot-swapable. It might not be essential, but instead, perhaps, it's just prudent.

  • MobileSTOR MS2UT + esata + USB + mac pro = never-ending problems

    Hey gang,
I seemed to have entered a perfect storm here:
I had purchased the *MobileSTOR MS2UT 2 Bay SATA to eSATA/USB 2.0 RAID 0/1* Enclosure initially for a *dual 800 quicksilver G4* mac that I had, looking for a hardware-based Raid solution for back ups and to not burden the G4 processor. I have replaced the G4 with an early *2008 2.8 dual quad core mac pro*. After two machines and two different PCI sata cards, I've had no luck....
    (website for the above enclosure)
    http://www.sansdigital.com/mobilestor/ms2ut.html
For starters, in the G4, I had a quality Seritek/1ve2+2 controller that had no problem with two other single drive enclosures, but failed with the MS2UT.
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-1ve2plus2/
A glib response from Seritek support says that I should use their enclosure. Digging around I find that I need a controller card that can handle a port multiplier enclosure rather than just any serial ata enclosure. Seems silly to me that the user has to dig for this. I mean the USB & FIREWIRE interfaces don't seem to care: it says USB/FIREWIRE on the effing box of both the controller and on the drive, badda-bing, badda boom: it works. Whats with this high maintenance of esata. Well you get roughly 2-3x the performance so Ok, maybe its worth it.
Well, with the macpro on the horizon,, I give up on the G4, close that unsolved mystery. For the mac pro I figure PCIe, a modern computer, no problem. I get the computer, fish around the internet for an esata PCIe card, then I come across this review of the WiebeTech SilverSATA II which appears to be similar to that of the MobileSTOR:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/wiebetech/silver2/
It appears that the unit has specific tastes as far as having the right card to make it bootable, multiport aware, etc... (the Sonnet Tempo 4+4 card works but its a PCIx card, not PCIe)
Like I said: install a bootable Mac OS on any USB/firewire drive, plug it into any card, and it works... estata... its russian roulette...
Ok so I round up some vendors, (firmtek, sonnet, Highpoint) send them emails to see what they think: if their latest cards will work with the MS2UT... They are all over the place.. they think it may work, they dunno... it should work, they haven't tested it... then they try to push their own enclosure hardware on me. I mean see an astrologist or have your palm read.. it seems more likely you'll get a more accurate answer from them, rather than vendors... props to Sonnet, though, they list compatibility right on the page with their controller.
then 10.6 comes out... and you email vendors about compatibility on that OS, and they don't even email you back.
So I find this review of the highpoint rocket raid for the mac on the great sight: Barefeats.com
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard119.html
to make a long story short:
+KEY FEATURES of the "eSATA for Mac"+
    +1. Dual eSATA ports+
    +2. 32 and 64-bit EFI onboard+
+3. Able to boot Mac OS X+
+4. Plug and Play for (Oxford and Silicon Image chipset) external storage+
    enclosures
    +5. 4x PCIe rating+
+6. Support for Direct Attached and Port Multiplied enclosures+
    +7. RAID 0, 1, 5, and JBOD support using browser-based manager+
+8. Native support for Snow Leopard+
    +9. Compatible with 2006 - 2009 Mac Pro+
I should be set, right? WRONG!
I email highpoint, detailing that I planned to mix both Port multiplied (PM) and direct access (DA) enclosures on the same card at the same time. They say maybe (only describing the PM enclosure, not even mentioning the DA enclosure compatibility as I specified), since its a raid card and I intended to use it with an enclosure with its own raid hardware, however they say they see no issues. Well it shows they don't even know their own hardware: Their docks say that the card supports PM enclosures as well as DA (direct access) enclosures. Their web based software even shows the two as separate categories. What is buried in the manual and not cleared up by tech support or their product page is that YOU CAN'T MIX PM AND DA ENCLOSURES ON THE CARD AT THE SAME TIME!!! I explained more in the paragraph above than any tech support from any company. Unbelievable where support has gone these days.
I discover the above because I found the card at Fry's believe it not and since they have a generous return policy I tried it out and learned the above the hard way. No dice on the MS2UT with what is perhaps the most forgiving esata card for the mac.
So more hunting on the web, this time the enclosure's manufacture site: sans digital.
    http://www.sansdigital.com/mobilestor/ms2ut.html
...clicking on the accessories tab I find several esata adapter cards... funny that they include ones that don't appear to support PM enclosures... Anyway, I study two that state they supports port multipliers:
    http://www.sansdigital.com/adapters/ha-san-4espcix2.html:
    http://www.sansdigital.com/adapters/ha-dat-4espcie.html
Ok, I may not get a bootable enclosure.. I just want to get this thing working in esata since cloning my internal raid on the mac pro takes 8 hours using usb, and my main purpose is to maintain a clone so I make my compromise.
I should be set, right? WRONG!
reading the fine print on both cards it says:
*(Please note that the host adapter card is based on Silicon Image chipset, which currently only support up to MAC OS 10.5.1 by Silicon Image.)*
I do more research, it seems any manufacturer using chips by Silicon Image will have an issue with 10.6 macs! On some websites it says Silicon Image will never release a driver. On firmtek it says they make their own driver and swears that it works. At the Silicon Image website they say they are an OEM provider so don't bother them, and that its up to the vendor to make a compatible driver. Sheesh!!
I don't get it.. whats the point in having an esata sticker if it appears to come in more flavors than an ice cream shop!
Oh and it gets better: I go to the sonnet site, thinking they have to have something that works, looking at their latest tempo SATA E4P:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4p.html
well, the fine print is EXHAUSTIVE, but again props to Sonnet for making it crystal clear:
    (4) Sonnet Tempo cards are compatible with most external SATA storage. However, external hard drives with USB 2.0/eSATA dual interface based on the Oxford Semiconductor OXU931DS storage controller chip may not be compatible with Mac OS X when connected via SATA. Known issues are kernel panics occurring when the drive is connected, or the drive not being recognized by the operating system.
    +Summary of external SATA storage+

+Advanced users note that this card is not yet compatible in full 64-bit boot. Snow Leopard default boots in 32-bit mode, except in an Xserve.+
So in short: if you have an enclosure that has both USB and esata, but does not use the JMicron 20366, then it will not be recognized by the card. If you have an enclosure with three interfaes: USB, FW and esata, you're fine. Keep in mind too: most manufacturers don't put the source manufacturer of their chipsets on the box. So I ask..
*HOW IS THE CONSUMER SUPPOSED TO KNOW!*
I swear, a perfect analogy is if I go to best buy, buy a toshiba DVD player only to discover it doesn't play DVD's that contain movies produced by Sony Pictures..because its not a a Sony/columbia House movie. You think consumers would put up with that crap? UNBELIEVABLE...
So now I have this really versatile enclosure that apparently can't run on Mac 10.6 with ANY esata controller for the mac. I really like the design of the enclosure, with its hardware based raid that is hot swappable and has a small footprint. However there seems to be no way to get a controller card for this device that will work on a 10.6 mac.
I guess whats inferred is that you should get an enclosure with the fewest variety of ports, i.e. esata/fw/usb... ironically if it has all three, you are ok, but not if it has usb/esata. Being that USB is the most popular, thats not easy. I'm looking to contact Sans Digital to see if they will exchange it for me, possible for a model with esata/fw800 or an esata only model, if it exists. My last resort is to just use it as a USB drive (my intention was to use it as a clone of my system, with the added security that the enclosure makes a copy of a copy in raid 1), however its like 3x as time consuming than esata.
If anyone has a working MobileSTOR MS2UT/wiebetech SilverSATA II in a 10.5 mac pro, please respond to me with your config. Thanks for reading!

Thank you hatter for your reply.
I'm familiar with OWC, as I've done business with them since 2001, as well as XLR8.
I have a 2008 mac pro so the 2009 model related problems are not an issue in my situation
As I stated above I go to reputable vendors for my hardware who have specific mac experience. I look specifically for hardened compatibility so that there is support for things like deep sleep. The Sans Digital enclosure was over $200..it was not cheap. The USB/Esata combo is the most common interface for the enclosure storage market. Having a compatibility issue is a vendor fault, not the buyer. Having minutiae flavors of esata compatability based on chipsets roulette wheel is inexcusable. The enclosure needs that I have is for the medium to be removable and be able to be rebuilt at the hardware level, i.e. at the enclosure's control panel. To the mac its just a drive. The hotswap and back up is transparent to the OS and mac hardware, and allows me to change from raid 0/1 and do back up right from the enclosure interface.
So far I haven't had problems with USB/Firewire. Meanwhile Esata to me has been nothing but beta testing for vendors and seeing how the chipset manufacturers have gone loosey-goosey on following spec and just dump cheap chinese crap into the market with no pride.
    for comparison:
    USB/FW, PATA, SATA, SCSI
    1) industry standard
    2) native drivers
    3) bootable. Period.
    4) buy a controller card/raid card, plug it in, format, it works even through major OS upgrades.
    5) USB/FW: Hot-swapable. Yes it really does work.
    Esata:
    1) Multiple standards (again, look at the Sonnet website to see the minefield one has to walk through to mate a controller card to an enclosure)
    2) non native drivers. Buying an esata card is like marrying into the vendors family. Plus if you manage to get things working and do an OS upgrade, you are playing russian roulette. If you system boots off it, then get life insurance because you may kill yourself.
3)Not bootable and no one seems to care to explain why. Whats odd is that some earlier PCIx cards were bootable (like sonnet Temp 4x4) but their PCIe successors aren't. Not sure if this has to do with the host computer BIOS and/or the current chipsets from SI which rely on custom drivers from the vendors. Another lovely example of this are the ODD_SATA ports on the Mac pro: storage only, not bootable. Sure it makes sense now that I've learned it the hard way, however to users of FW/USB and even IDE, one would think that motherboard ports are bootable. Yes I know this is a mac bios thing and its not even considered as part of the feature set of the computer
    4) As I've shown, each controller card seems to be unique, even if its from the same vendor. Even the drivers vary from card to card! Heck even the vendors are unsure as to how compatible their controller cards are with various enclosures. That is proprietary, not industry standard. OS upgrades doesn't seem to provide native driver support for Direct access and/or port multiplying interfaces. The problem with this is that film/video users like myself like to build bullet proof systems, and with raids that I've built from IDE, FW, or USB, I've never had the minutiae of compatibility issues as I've had with esata. I installed an Acard raid controller in my dual 800 back in 2001, installed the drives and forgot about it. it just worked through multiple OS upgrades. Not sure whats gong on with esata.
    5) Can't call it hot swappable if I can't get the **** thing to wok in the first place.
My analysis is this: Esata is basically a proprietary format to the vendor that sells the hardware, while USB/FW is an industry standard. I bought a quality enclosure that said "esata", I bought a quality controller that said "esata", it didn't work. I had to learn the hard way about DA and PM enclosures and now about chipset conflicts. I've built computers since the late 80's amiga days, hot-rodding that computer well beyond spec and with custom cooling. SCSI terminators and IDE master/slave issues were easy-cheesey because they followed straightforward rules. This esata stuff is just plain sloppy work on the part of vendors and as Danny Glover said I'm getting to old for this **** as far as being a beta tester for hardware.

Alright, I decided to go with an MSI GTX 980 Gaming w\ 4GB DDR5 for the video card since it has a good amount or VRAM, CUDA cores, and is ranked as one of the best graphics cards available right now. I'm sure by the time I can afford to build the rig they'll be even more reasonable. Right now they're actually under $700 which imho is pretty damn reasonable already for the performance.
You mentioned that HDD RAIDs need larger sets to see fast speeds. Should I use SSDs instead? To me it doesn't matter either way. I would rather pay the higher price for SSDs if I'm going to get a big performance bump. You also mention RAID 6. Would you recommend that over RAID 10? Like I mentioned in my original post, I am very new to using raid and want to use the best array for my needs. I am going to be working with pretty large video files, especially once I start editing 4K video, and did read that HDDs work better for some odd reason than SSDs with large (non-random?) reads (and possibly writes).
Hypothetically what do you think about this drive setup?
4 x Intel 730's using RAID 10 (internal hot swapable) for my OS/Apps which would give me a good performance bump from using a striped array but also the redundancy I need in case a drive fails.
2 x 4TB HDDs using RAID 0 to store completed projects. I'll also be backing up to an external drive, blu-rays, or a cloud server.
1 x 256GB SSD to use as a scratch disk for any apps that need it, primarily for Premiere & After Effects
Can you think of any reason to add another drive in there somewhere I'm not thinking of, or change that setup at all? Thanks for your input btw.

  • How to remove the WiSM2 from the Catalyst 6500 series switch?

Hello, can you explain to me how to safely remove the WiSM2 from the Catalyst 6500 series switch?
According to the documentation "Catalyst 6500 Series Wireless Services Module 2 Installation and Verification Note":
To remove the WiSM2, perform these steps:
Step1     Shut down the module by one of these methods:
In privileged mode from the router prompt, enter the hw-mod module mod shutdown command. NoteIf you enter this command to shut down the module, you must enter the following commands in global configuration mode to restart (power down, and then power up) the module:
Router# no power enable module modRouter# power enable module mod
If the module does not respond to any commands, press the SHUTDOWN button located on the front panel of the module.
Step2     Verify that the WiSM2 shuts down. Do not remove the module from the switch until the POWER LEDis off.
But, in the case of Step1 (1st methods) I do not see a option "shutdown"  in the command "hw-mod module 3"...
All I prompted to enter is:
    c6500#hw-module module 3 ?
boot           Specify boot options for the module through Power Management Bus control register
    reset          Reset specified component
simulate  Simulate options for the module
Is it hidden options? IOS version of c6500 is 12.2(33)SXJ1
In the case of Step2 (2nd methods) there is not any button on the front panel of the module?
And yet, it is better to remove the module configuration manually or use the command module clear-config prior to removing the module?

    Good catch.
Which one is true, will get back to you on this if i've something soon.

All modules, including the supervisor engine (if you have redundant supervisor engines), support hot swapping. You can add, replace, or remove modules without interrupting the system power or causing other software or interfaces to shut down. For more information about hot-swapping modules, see the Catalyst 6500 Series Switch Module Installation Guide.

  • Which is more powerful?? Please help

Which is the stronger computer?? Which is the better buy??
    1) the new mini Mac, 2.7 i7, 8 gigs ram $1100
    Or
    2) 2008 : Mac Pro 3.1 (8-core, dual 2.8 Quad-Core Intel Xenon) no MULTI-threading
    -10 gigs of ram
-ATI Radeon HD 4870 (upgraded graphics card)
    -2TB internal HD
-Newer Technology MAX Power 6G PCIe 2.0 Raid/e-Sata Card (hot-swapable)

The Mini has a four-core CPU vs. the MP's eight cores. Just visit Geekbench - Primate Labs and look for benchmark results for each computer.
The MP uses full-sized 7200 RPM drives while the Mini uses a notebook drive that's 5400 RPM. The MP has more RAM, bigger HDD, better GPU that is upgradeable, and hardware RAID. Furthermore, MPs are built like a tank, have space internally for four drives, two optical drives, etc., etc., etc.

  • Maxtor III won't unmount

    Hello All,
I am capturing video to a series of 4 Maxtor III combo drives via firewire 400.
I have set up and used 3 of the drives, the first 2 drives I have mounted and unmounted several times with no problems.
I used the 3rd drive for a couple days and when I went to unmount it it will not eject. I have tried all ways of ejecting and while trying to unmount in Disk Utilities, I received the error message:
The disk “Tung's 3” could not be unmounted.
Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk.
I closed all applications and still got the same error message.
When I repaired through Disk Utilities I got the following message:
Verify and Repair disk “Tung's 3”
Repairing disk failed with error Could not unmount disk
I have used the hard drive to capture video only, there are only FCP files on the disk.
    Any suggestions? I appreciate it.
    Terese

I'm probable confusing the issue because of my lack of computer knowledge.
I do not have all four drives hooked up at once. The Maxtor III is a hot swapable drive and I have one of the drives hooked up at once.
    My operating system is 10.4.8
my computer is a G5 imac 1.8 GHz, 768 MB SDRAM
the application version is FCP 5.1
the camcorder used for capture is a Sony DCR-HC26.
I have the camcorder and one of the drives connected via firewire.
I hope this answers the questions, I appreciate you helping me sort it out.

  • New Nokia N8 Soft ware Belle

    hi all
I've renently switched over from Nokia X6 to N8 with SW version Belle
so far no problem in the device on any matters (SW, apps etc)
even with X6, I did not have much problems except date issue which was solved later with SW 40.00
    with best regards
    Chandana

Well there have been rumours of an N8 successor but they have quieted down lately. That is what i am waiting for. I don't see myself changing OS in the near future so no WinPho for me. If I do change it will definitely be to the N9. Nothing else even compares to the N8.
I agree with you, they should just make a powerful Symbian Device and stop holding back. Currently Symbian is the most ready to fit all the technology that Nokia has developed over the years that we cannot live without.
Data transfer mode, OSB OTG, NFC, Hot swapable memory cards, HDMI out, Wonderful camera's to mention a few. I thikn they should put all of these together with Galaxy Nexus rivaling processing power.
I hope they do turn out something (With Symbian) that is flagship worthy. Unfortunately it will probably kill WP sales unless both are marketed correctly. Then they will all sell well and help get Nokia smartphone sales back where they belong.
Show your appreciation. Hit that kudos button real hard

  • New Superdrive, but lost Airport

My combo drive died in my Ti Book 800, since my Applecare expired, I bought a dual layer Matshita Super Drive from OWC. The installation went well, but I lost my airport card afterwards. The icon says it's on but the system profiler says it's not. I've reseated it and checked the antenna, but it doesn't turn on. My external Belkin pc-card works in the system, but I can't seem to power up the internal card. I toss out the airport prefs too. Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Bob

Yes, it is the Belkin. I don't remember if I loaded any drivers for it. The Belkin seems to work fine and I guess it will be the final solution to this problem. I have always used both cards, not simultaneously. Yes, the Belkin is faster with better range, but it sticks out and is not hot swapable. I couldn't leave it in when transporting the PB and it would mean I would have to shut down and reboot all the time. Also, there is a part of me that is bothered by an issue that I can't resolve. I did a hardware check and the internal airport card passed. I just haven't resolved myself to the idea that this is a problem that I can't fix.
Thank you for your help and interest.

  • Problems running Solaris 10 GA x86 on a Compaq Presario R3200

    Dear all,
I downloaded the DVD images for Solaris 10 x86, and tried to install it on my amd64-based laptop.
    1) The first thing that happens is that sometimes at the start, the keyboard will not work when I am asked the kind of installation, or to press the ESC key to enter the DCA.
    2) When I successfully enter the installation, I am able to install all. It seems Solaris recognises all the devices on the system. However, when I reboot to start the OS, the system tells me that "it cannot mount the root filesystem"...which is quite strange, since it succesfully (at least I suppose, since I do not get any warnings) installs all the packages.
I used the graphical install, and I put Solaris on a partition right behind a WinXP partition. I gave WinXP 24GB, followed by 10GB Solaris partition.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Antonio

Just a suggestion, forget about the dual boot and go get yourself a "hot-swapable" hard drive enclosure. You can get a caddy with enclosure for about $15.00 and then a second enclosure for $12.00.
Then just shutdown the machine and swap the drives when you want to use a different OS. Having both OSs on the same drive always seems to create problems.

  • Need some Tech Advice -- Harddrive configuation

I've searched the last week or so, just seeing what everyone else has asked, what others have suggested and/or done. So I've gotta ask a couple of questions myself.
    System Specs:
    G5 Quad Core 2.5Ghz
    8GB of RAM
Pair of 500GB Hard Drives (currently two separate drives)
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500
    Dual 30" Displays
There are 2 500GB drives in the computer, but the 2nd one is not being utilized currently. The boot/primary drive has less than 1GB available. System performance is sluggish. 2 applications that are being used are Photoshop CS2 and Aperture. All images are shot with a Canon 1Ds in RAW.
I like the idea of RAID0 in regard to speed, but don't like the idea of no redundancy. This 500GB drive was filled up from February of this year, so hard drives get filled up quickly. What can anyone recommend for a means to increase capacity, performance and stability.
Hardware RAID configuration? Software RAID configuration? External Enclosure? Based on what I've read here, hardware RAID, though more expensive, would be a better solution compared to SoftRAID. External enclosure would need to be FW800 vs. USB2.0.
The thing I'm trying to stay away from would be a 1TB RAID0 and then another 1TB RAID0 as a means for backup.
I currently have the 250GB drive that came with the computer, so I could set that drive back up as the boot drive, then take the pair of 500GB drives to store all the data. Just looking for the advice of the more experienced.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for everyone's time.

    don,
After posting this and searching further, I found this:
    http://www.caldigit.com/S2VRDuo.asp
I am actully looking at CalDigit's SATA RAID too.
This 2-bay RAID subsystem provides amazing functions that none of FireWire drive can compete. If it is at 150MB/s as they claimed, it is 2 times faster than FireWire 800 RAID.
I also checked with B&H, the price of such GREAT SATA RAID with 4-port Mac Pro compatible SATA card is fairly inexpensive. (only 500+ bucks for 500GB)
Or if you want to use firewire interface, your best bet is to get the new CalDigit FW800 dual bay array, FireWire VR, which is hot swapable and cooled by a nice quiet fan. This might be the best and give you most flexibility (can be upgraded to larger capacity if needed, supports RAID 0, 1 and JBOD, same as their S2VR Duo):

  • Software vs Hardware RAID question

I want to mirror my data files (mainly music)to an external RAID 1 array. I already use Time Machine for my system disk and will probably keep it running off of an old Firewire 400 enclosure. I have seen many dual drive enclosures for Firewire 800 in 2 basic price ranges. For about $100 there are some nice aluminum ones with only RAID 0 and independent channels. For about $150 NewerTech makes a nice one with RAID 1 capability. Is the Hardware-based RAID in the enclosure a significant improvement over Tiger's software version? I've never used a software based RAID and don't know it's limitations. The NewerTech Guardian Maximus from OWC does have a feature to rebuild the bad drive, although it doesn't specify "hot-swapable". As an aside, if a multiformat enclosure includes a SATA port, is that port usable to get a SATA peripheral into my iMac (at reduced throughput) or is it for connecting the enclosure to your computer only. Thanks for any thoughts.

Where is your music stored now and why do you want to store it on a mirror raid setup?

They are not hot swappable because you have to take the case apart to change out the drive. RAID1 is where 2 drives are formatted to look like a single drive and the second drive mirrors the first drive duplicating the stored data. If one drive should fail then you can replace the bad drive and the RAID will "rebuild" just by mirroring the data from the other drive. This kind of RAID is good for redundancy but not any better for performance(often less). You also loose half of your total disk space of the 2 drives. For example 2 500GB drives in RAID 1 will look like a single 500GB drive which will have ~465GB usable storage space.

An eSata port is slightly different shape than internal SATA but they are exactly the same interface. The iMacs do not have any eSata ports on the back so there would be no way for you to connect the external via eSata. If you got a quad interface external case then you would just use the fastest interface you have being the FW800.
