IDSM-2 Mode - Best Practice

Hi All,
I'm gonna deploy two 6500 switches with FWSM, IDSM and ACE modules. My network consist of Voice vlan, Server vlan, Application vlan and some user vlans. I will also have other devices like CSMAR, ACS etc.
My question is which IDSM mode (promiscuous/inline) should i configure in my scanerio and also which mode is suitable for voice because i've read somewhere that inline mode add delay in traffic.

1. Use separate mount point for archive logs like /archv
2. Start using with 1 and check the performance.
3. This is depends upon the redo log file size. Create your redo log file such that hourly maximum 5-8 log switch will happen. Try to make it less than 5 log switch per hour.
4. Check the redo log file size.
5. Check for archive log mount point space allocation. Take the backup of archive by RMAN and deleted the backed up archive logs from the archived destination.

We are planning to deploy IDSM-2 at client site. Customer is asking few things:
1. If we install it in promiscuous mode then what will be the best utilization and design for this module,
how to configure it
2. If we install it in inline mode then what will be the best utilization and design for this module, how to configure it.
Let me to explain you few things:
They have multiple vlans in Cisco 6509 Switch and the servers are placed behind the firewall (FWSM), they want to inspect all vlans traffic forwarding towards server farm.
To fulfill their requirements, we recommend them to install IDSM-2 in promiscuous mode, as this module has less throughput and also advise them to keep up to date the latest signatures in IDSM-2. On our recommendation, they want some experts to weight it or advise if some other best practices design to install IDSM-2 in their network.
I really appreciate if you add your valuable inputs in this regard, as we have to deploy this module in coming weekend. Your early response will be highly appreciated.

Best Practices on OWB/ODI when using Asynchronous Distributed HotLog Mode

Hello OWB/ODI:
I want to get some advice on best practices when implementing OWB/ODI mappings to handle Oracle Asynchronous Distributed HotLog CDC (change data capture), specifically for “updates”.
Under Asynchronous Distributed HotLog mode, if a record is changed in a given source table, only the column that has been changed is populated in the CDC table with the old and new value, and all other columns with the exception of the keys are populated with NULL values.
In order to process this update with an OWB or ODI mapping, I need to compare the old value (UO) against the new value (UN) in the CDC table. If both the old and the new value are NOT the same, then this is the updated column. If both the old and the new value are NULL, then this column was not updated.
Before I apply a row-update to my destination table, I need to figure out the current value of those columns that have not been changed, and replace the NULL values with its current value. Otherwise, my row-update will replace with nulls those columns that its value has not been changed. This is where I am looking for an advise on best practices. Here are the possible 2 solutions I can come up with, unless you guys have a better suggestion on how to handle “updates”:
About My Environment: My destination table(s) are part of a dimensional DW database. My only access to the source database is via Asynchronous Distributed HotLog mode. To build the datawarehouse, I will create initial mappings in OWB or ODI that will replicate the source tables into staging tables. Then, I will create another set of mappings to transform and load the data from the staging tables into the dimension tables.
Solution #1: Use the staging tables as lookup tables when working with “updates”:
1.     Create an exact copy of the source tables into a staging environment. This is going to be done with the initial mappings.
2.     Once the initial DW database is built, keep the staging tables.
3.     Create mappings to maintain the staging tables using as source the CDC tables.
4.     The staging tables will always be in sync with the source tables.
5.     In the dimension load mapping, “join” the staging tables, and identify “inserts”, “updates”, and “deletes”.
6.     For “updates”, use the staging tables as lookup tables to get the current value of the column(s) that have not been changed.
7.     Apply the updates in the dimension tables.
Solution #2: Use the dimension tables as lookup tables when working with “updates”:
1.     Delete the content of the staging tables once the initial datawarehouse database has been built.
2.     Use the empty staging tables as a place to process the CDC records
3.     Create mappings to insert CDC records into the staging tables.
4.     The staging tables will only contain CDC records (i.e. new records, updated records, and deleted records)
8.     In the dimension load mapping, “outer join” the staging tables, and identify “inserts”, “updates”, and “deletes”.
5.     For “updates”, use the dimension tables as lookup tables to get the current value of a column(s) that has not been changed.
6.     Apply the updates in the dimension tables.
Solution #1 uses staging tables as lookup tables. It requires extra space to store copies of source tables in a staging environment, and the dimension load mappings may take longer to run because the staging tables may contain many records that may never change.
Solution #2 uses the dimension tables as both the lookup tables as well as the destination tables for the “updates”. Notice that the dimension tables will be updated with the “updates” AFTER they are used as lookup tables.
Any other approach that you guys may suggest? Do you see any other advantage or disadvantage against any of the above solutions?

linux environment and java is trying to do AQjmsFactory.getTopicConnectionFactory(...); Java machine is diffarent from the database and no oracle client is to be installed on java machine.
The same code is working fine when i use oc8i instead of thin drivers and run it on db machine.

IPhone Best Practices - A Work In Progress

Hello all. I've been tasked with introducing my coworkers into the inner workings of the iPhone, and there are a good number of pointers that I find myself saying over and over again. I'd like to share my best practices with everyone, as well as collect more pointers and opinions from the community at large.
Care and Handling:
First - wash your hands, often. Now I know we all do this often anyway, but I'd like to point out that a healthy amount of hand washing will really go a long way to keep your iPhone screen smudge free. The worst offender, unfortunately, is doughnuts. A small layer of sugar will render that area un-tappable, without any real indication that it has done so. If you are frantically tapping the screen on the iPod button and nothing is happening, clean your phone before you do a hard reset.
Second - Pockets. Keeping your phone in your front pocket is natural and what most of us do. In these summer months, however, keeping your phone in a sweaty front pocket can do a good deal to the dirt level of the screen. If you find yourself cleaning your phone constantly, try a belt clip.
Lastly - Battery Life. Your iPhone's battery life is in your hands, literally. Being aware of your power consumption and planning accordingly is going to be infinitely more important that the battery's native charge-holding ability. This goes especially for the day of purchase - as tempting as it may be to open the box and activate, immediately running around the house watching YouTube, it is best to let the phone charge for 12 hours before use. Charging the phone every night is an absolute must, skipping a day will kill the battery life as your ride the bottom edge the following day. Most of us have access to a USB port while we're at work, best idea will be to plug in your phone when you sit down at your desk.
iPod:
Large Libraries: In the opening weekend, I got many complaints that you cannot manually manage your music. There is a workaround that has made me change the way I work with all of my iPods: the iPhone specific playlist. Simply create a playlist with all of the music you wish to put on your phone and sync that one playlist. This also helps with sync time - you have a start sync and an end sync, not a constant sync all throughout your music management, slowing your computer down in the process.
TV Shows: I watch a lot of MST3K, which I have organized into iTunes as TV shows, split into seasons, the works. The problem that has arisen, therefore, is the one of selective synchronization - you cannot specifically select the TV show you want to sync to the device, instead getting the choices to sync all, unwatched, or latest shows. This is problematic when each show is 700MB large. Here's the work around - select all of the episodes of a specific show and right click, selecting "Mark as Not New", removing all of the little blue dots from the episodes. Select the one, three, or five episodes, and right click them, selecting "Mark as New", then sync the last one, three, or five unwatched episodes. The shows you selected will sync.
iPhoto:
Many users are complaining that iPhoto opens whenever the phone is connected. This is not a preference of the phone, but rather iPhoto. Remember when you first launched iPhoto and it asked you if you wanted to use iPhoto whenever your camera was attached? iPhoto is detecting that your phone is a camera and launching, just as you told it to do.
Mail:
POP accounts - too many unread messages: When first adding a POP account, all of the messages downloaded to the phone arrive as unread. Tapping a message, tapping back, and then tapping the next message can get tedious. Here's the workaround - tap the small down arrow to the upper right hand side of the screen, watching closely to the number next to Inbox. When that number goes down by one, tap the arrow again. If that number hasn't gone down yet, wait a sec, and do not try to tap tap tap tap tap, you'll flood the input queue and crash Mail.
Syncing Mail accounts - All too often people blame the iPhone when their mail does not work. A perfect test is sync you accounts from Mail. If they work in mail, they'll work on the phone, if they are unreliable in Mail, they will also be unreliable on the phone. The Mail client on the iPhone is just as powerful as any other mail client in terms of how it connects to mail servers, if you are having problems you need to check your settings before blaming the hardware. If you prefer to leave your install of Mail.app alone, create a new user account on your Mac, set up all of the accounts you want there, and use iTunes to sync that data to the phone. Make sure to remove that portion of sync from your actual user account's instance of iTunes, however, or it will all sync back.
This message has not been downloaded from the server: This message has snagged a couple users, but upon investigation, these users have filled their iPhones to the absolute brim with music and video. It hasn't been downloaded from the server because there is no space to download to - this also applies to the Camera application dumping to the Home screen. Because there is no space, it can't add any new data. Make some room, then be patient as the mail client gets to that message in cleanup (often a sync or reboot will clear it up).
Safari:
Safari and iPod: Many users have reported iPod stopping in the middle of browsing, often pouting and pursing their lips crying, "This is terrible, I can't even browse the web and listen to music at the same time?". I then check their phone, and lo and behold they have upwards of eight separate pages open at the same time. This device (like every other computer out there) has a finite amount of memory, each page taking up a significant portion depending on how busy the page is. I've routinely gotten through entire albums while browsing through Safari, but I've got one page open in total, and it's usually mostly text. Keep it to one or two pages open and iPod will run forever if you let it.
Web Apps: "This web app is terrible, it keeps booting me to Home!" When was your last reboot? How many other pages are open? In the same vein as Safari and iPod, Web Apps need a good deal of breathing room - give it to them. Close down other pages, stop iPod, or even reboot. Give the app a clean slate and it will perform, every time. iPhoneRemote users will attest to this.
iCal:
Multiple Calendars - Default Calendar: When adding a new appointment, it adds to the default calendar. Appointments can't be shunted to the correct calendar until after sync anyway, so create an "iPhone" calendar and make that the default. Because it's in that calendar, you'll know enough to move it to the appropriate calendar after sync.

No - powered off with the iPhone means powered off. Any phone that provides for this is not powered off - it is in deep sleep or deep standby mode, which the iPhone does not support. If you don't want your phone ringing or don't want to receive SMS at night but you want to use the iPhone's alarm feature as a wake-up alarm, you can turn on Airplane Mode before going to bed, which will also conserve the battery if your iPhone is not plugged in at night.

Best practice for creating RFC destination entries for 3rd parties(Biztalk)

We are on SAP ECC 6 and we have been creating multiple RFC destination entries for the external 3rd party applications such as Biz-talk and others using TCP/IP connection type and sharing the programid.
The RFC connections with IDOC as data flow have been made using Synchronous mode for time critical ones(few) and majority through asynchronous mode for others. The RFC destination entries have been created for many interfaces which have unique RFC destinations with its corresponding ports defined in SAP.
We have both inbound and outbound connectivity.with the large number of RFC destinations being added we wanted to review the same. We wanted to check with others who had encountered similar situation and were keen to learn their experiences.
We also wanted to know if there are any best practices to optimise on number of RFC destinations.
Here were a few suggestions we had in mind to tackle the same.
1. Create unique RFC destinations for every port defined in SAP for external applications as Biztalk for as many connections. ( This would mean one for inbound, one for outbound)
2. Create one single RFC destination entry for the external host/application and the external application receiving the idoc control record to interpret what action to perform at its end.
3. Create RFC destinations based on the modules it links with such as materials management, sales and distribution, warehouse management. This would ensure we can limit the number of RFC to be created and make it simple to understand the flow of data.
I have done checks on SAP best practices website, sap oss notes and help pages but could not get specific information I was after.
I do understand we can have as unlimited number of RFC destinations and maximum connections using appropriate profile parameters for gateway, RFC, client connections, additional app servers.
I would appreciate if you can suggest the best architecture or practice to achieve RFC destinations in an optimized manner.

-> be careful if you have multi cllients ( for example in acceptance) RFC's are client independ but ports are not! you could run in to trouble
2. Create one single RFC destination entry for the external host/application and the external application receiving the idoc control record to interpret what action to perform at its end.
-> could be the best solution... its easier to create partner profiles and the control record will contain the correct partner.
3. Create RFC destinations based on the modules it links with such as materials management, sales and distribution, warehouse management. This would ensure we can limit the number of RFC to be created and make it simple to understand the flow of data.
-> consider this option 2.

External connectivity best practice

Hi,
I would like to know what are the best practices to have external users using Excel to connect to SSAS cube. I understand the general concept that a cube user must be in a domain AD andthat same user is a member of a SSAS cube.
How can I ensure the excel connection is secure and each external user is only able to view their own data? I know the workbook can be password protected but can the connection be also password protected ?

Most modern external drives will typically go into a standby mode shortly after they're unmounted or disconnected which will spin down the drive. They'll still use some power, but your drive won't be doing anything so you don't need to worry about wearing it out. I'm a bit anal about stuff. I usually go so far as to unplug my external drives when I'm not using them as the power supply still consumes some juice... but, in your case, as it seems like you probably go back and forth quite a bit... just powering it down would be the best thing. It really doesn't take any extra effort when connecting your MacBook Pro to just switch it back on again.

Best Practice for FlexConnect Wireless roaming in MediaNet environment?

Current Cisco best practice recommendations for enterprise MediaNet design, specify that VLANs be local to a switch / switch stack (i.e., to limit the scope of spanning-tree).
In the wireless world, this causes problems if you want users while roaming to keep real-time applications up and running. Every time they connect to a new AP on a different VLAN, then they will need to get a new IP address, which interrupts real-time apps.
So...best practice for LAN users causes real problems for wireless users.
I thought I'd post here in case there's a best practice for implementing wireless roaming in a routed environment that we might have missed so far!
We have a failover pair of FlexConnect 7510s, btw, configured for local switching for Internal users, and central switching with an anchor controller on the DMZ for Guest users.

Thanks for your replies, Stephen and JSnyder.
The situation here is that the original design engineer is no longer here, and the original design was not MediaNet-friendly, in that it had a very few /20 subnets bridged over entire large sites.
These several large sites (with a few hundred wireless users per site), are connected to an HQ location (where the 7510s in failover mode are installed) via 1G ethernet hand-offs (MPLS at the WAN provider). The 7510s are new, and are replacing older contollers at the HQ location.
The internal employee wireless users use resources both local to their site, as well as centralized resources. There are at least as many Guest wireless users per site as there are internal employee users, and the service to them consists of Internet traffic only. (When moved to the 7510s, their traffic will continue to be centrally switched and carried to an anchor controller in the DMZ.)
(1) So, going local mode seems impractical due to the sheer number of users whose traffic bound for their local site would be traversing the WAN twice. Too much bandwidth would be used. So, that implies the need to use Flex / HREAP mode instead.
(2) However, re-designing each site's IP environment for MediaNet would suggest to go routed to the closet. However, this breaks seamless roaming for users....
So, this conundrum is why I thought I'd post here, and see if there was some other cool / nifty solution I wasn't yet aware of.
The only other (possibly friendly to both needs) solution I'd thought of was to GRE tunnel a subnet from each closet to the collapsed Core / Disti switch at each site. Unfortunately, GRE tunnels are not supported in the rev of IOS on the present equipment, and so it isn't possible to try this idea.
Another "blue sky" idea I had (not for this customer, but possibly elsewhere in the future), is to use LAN switches such as 3850s that have WLC functionality built-in. I haven't yet worked with the WLC s/w available on those, but I was thinking it looks like they could be put into a mobility group, and L3 user roaming between them might then work. Do you happen to know if this might be a workable solution to the overall big-picture problem?

Best Practice For Database Parameter ARCH_LAG_TARGET and DBWR CHECKPOINT

I found for ARCH_LAG_TARGET, Oracle recommend to setup it to 1800 sec (30min)

First of all if you want to track the full and incremental checkpoints, make the LOG_CHECKPOINT_TO_ALERT parameter TRUE. You will see the checkpoint SCN and the completion periods.
Full checkpoint is being triggered when a log switch happens and checkpoint position in the controlfile is written in the datafile headers. For just a really tiny amount of time the database could be consistent eventhough it is open and in read/write mode.
ARCH_LAG_TARGET parameter is disabled and set to 0 by default. Here is the definition for that parameter;

If you want to set this parameter up the Oracle recommends it to be 1800 as you have said. This can subject to change from database to database and it is better for you to check it by experiencing it.

Best Practice - WAP connecting switchport configuration.

Is there a best practice for deploying the WAP's in a WAP/WLC infrastructure? Should the connecting switchport be an Access port or a Trunk port? I've seen this implemented in both fashions and wasn't sure if one was a better choice than the order. What is the difference?
My other question is regarding applying additional switchport configurations. Is there anything wrong with applying either spanning-tree portfast, spanning-tree bpdguard, or switchport port-security.

Access port all the time, everywhere, UNLESS the AP is configured for HREAP/FLEX then trunk. Or if you deploy a AP in monitor mode then TRUNK.
QOS -- if its access port trust dscp. If you truck trust cos.

Best Practice for SRST deployment at a remote site

What is the best practice for a SRST deployment at a remote site? Should a separate router such as a 3800 series be deployed for telephony in addition to another router to be deployed for Data? Is there a need for 2 different devices?

This is typically done all on one ISR Router at the remote site :)There are two flavors of SRST. Here is the feature comparison;

Best practice for GSS design

Please advice as to what records needs to go in Public DNS server in a scenario where i have url say x.y.com which is listed in the Domain List of the GSS-P, sot that GSS-P or GSS-S can handout the respective external VIP to the clients requesting the url in case one of the GSS/site (GSS_P and GSS-S) goes unavailable
Please also specify the communication path of a client accessing x.y.com.

I am new to GSS. I would appreciate if some can help me with the deisgn. I want to know if I need to put the GSS inline after the inernet facing firewall and befor the ACE module. OR use it as one arm mode. Trying to figure out the best fit in the design.
FWSM1 >>> GSS >>> ACE
or
just put the GSS as one arm mode between the FWSM1 >>> ACE

Best practice in dreamweaver based web design

Hi DW Gurus
I have been learning dreamweaver at work and at home for a while now and I am very interested in getting some details about best practices.
I am aware that my designs are still quite simple and don't expand dreamweaver anyway near its abilities, however as a novice I am sticking with DW CS4 and trying to developing foundation skills before trying to move on to greater adventures in web design. My dream is to eventually leave my employer and start my own freelance design business that I can manage while I am travelling in SE Asia (yeah I know - dream on .....). I am saving for my CS4 master suite license - my current one belongs to my employer.
In particular I have just started to do some free design a community organisation - I am trying to develop a portfolio of sites that I can show new clients (with money) what they could expect for their investments.
I am interested in getting some ideas about work flows - design standards - whether designers use the dreamweaver layouts - whether to code or to use the WYSIWYG.
Anyone care to share how they plan and go about their design work.
In my past life I was a SQL developer and a C#.net programmer - in those feilds there are standards for code and applications . Are there industry standards that would point to good or better designing?

The first thing you need to learn is html and css, without knowing the programming language will only make DW a hard tool to use. You need to learn coding to WC3 standards.

Yes, you can rely somewhat on DW's layout mode (or what features are left of it), but this will only lead to problems when it comes time to troubleshoot any problem pages that do not render correctly across the various browsers.
A paying client will expect a well designed, fully functional website and you need to have the programming skills to accomplish this for them.
Not sure how far advanced you are but the Adobe site has quite a few CSS based tutorials - and I would strongly urge you to go through the series listed below - to get up to speed on the correct way to lay out a page.

BI 7 Activate Business Content Best Practice?

Could you share your experience on how to activate business content in BI 7. In 3.x, I used to activate business content based on infosource then crate ods and infocube based on in infosource. Now in BI 7 infosource is no longer necessary. Please share your thoughts of best practice on activate business content in BI 7.

Hi,
To actiavte the objects in the BI content u can select which ever object u want and then select the collection mode as all the objects before and after....
this will ideally activate all the objects that are required for the functionin of the object that you have selected .......
In simpler way....
RSA1-> Business Contents-> Select your objects-> On the right hand side, select "automatic collection" under "collection mode" and Select "before and after data flow" -> Right Click the selected objects on the left hand side and right click -> Insert Objects for collection-> Once the selected objects comes to the right hand side, select "install" and click "install in background".

Installation Best Practice

Hi Guys
I just bought the Master Collection upgrade from CS5 to CS 5.5 (as part of the deal for auto upgrade to CS6). Are there any best practices I should observe for installing the update to make sure it doesn't gum up or fall over or whatever (or should I just whack the disc in and let it run)???
We're running Win7 SP1 64bit.
