IDVD 08 insist to transform NTSC 720 x 480 files in 640 x 480!!!

iDVD 08 insist to burn NTSC 720 x 480 files in 640 x 480
And of course smaller with a black box…
I've tried everything in vain.
It's the same If I select widescreen or 4/3 menus…
My files are mp4 H.264 files.
I'm quite desperate since I don't get WHY iDVD wants that DVDs look like 50 years old TV shows !
I looked at the forum and couldn't find any info relative to this problem.
I wonder if it's the fact that these files are Progressive. But I thought iDVD took care of it…

A TV uses rectangular pixels: 720x480.
A computer uses square pixels. So, those same pixels (720x480) are actually 640x480 and a computer. So this is normal.
The quality of your DVDs would be a separate and subjective issue. However, I can suggest that you NOT use H.264 (very compressed format) as the format for iDVD (which does it's own compression) to work with. I would give iDVD a DV or AIC file.

  • 720 x 480 vs. 640 x 480, which one to use?

    This is not a iMovie specific question, but it is related. I always thought that SD was 640 x 480 and I always format any stills I use for that format. Everything has been fine. 640 x 480 = 4:3. Recently somebody said that you should format for 720 x 480, even for SD. I'm a little confused, SD is 4:3 while 720 x 480 is 3:2. If you use this format will the edges get cut off on a SD TV, or will the image get squished?
    Thanks
    Chris

    where the 720 x 480 came from
    For historical resons there is some "extra room" around the video frame. This is the root of all kinds of errors when people calculate aspect ratios:
    Standard definition NTSC DV's sampling matrix is 720x480 (that includes the "extra room" around the image although often there is content in all pixels). DV uses rectangular pixels -- the pixel aspect ratio is 4320:4739 = ~0.912. So the pixels aren't square and you have to scale the image to see the correct proportions. iMovie and a TV set do this automatically but sometimes the poor user might see an unscaled image and think something is seriously wrong...
    Notice that inside (and outside!) of that 720x480 sampling matrix the actual active picture size is 710.85 x 486. Weird but true.
    Now, to see the correct proportions you have to scale rectangular pixels to square pixels. You usually do that by multiplying the horizontal pixel count by the pixel aspect ratio:
    So the square pixel horizontal sampling matrix becomes 720 x (4320:4739) = ~656. So you should scale 720x480 to 656x480 to see the correct proportions on a computer monitor.
    The same calculation applies also to the actual active picture size: 710.85 x (4320:4739) = 648. So the square pixel actual active picture size is 648x486 which is EXACTLY 4:3!! THAT is the 4:3 ratio we talk about -- not the 640x480 which is just a cropped value of the former weird size.
    The same principles apply also to 16:9 ratios.

  • FCP X transcoding Sony HDR-FX7 (1080i) to NTSC 720 x 480. Results are not pretty.

    Help, please? I shot some interview footage for my student documentary film with a Sony HDR-FX7 (1080i). FCP X transcodes it to NTSC 720 x 480 on import and it looks awful. Have now learned the difference between interlaced and progressive!. The film project has 1080p footage as well and won't deinterlace in Compressor or JES. Not sure what to do: can't reshoot. I've spent hours on Google and YouTube and can't find a solution or a viable workaround. Would welcome your help; thanks!

    I don't know what you're doing but there is no way FCP imports that media to 720x480, unless the camera is set to downconvert on output. iLink has to be switched off.

  • NTSC 720 X 480 4:3???  This format isn't' actually 4:3...

    I've come across some confusion in terms of exporting the proper 4:3 format for viewing on TV. Why does it label the format 'NTSC' when really it is not 4:3 and in fact stretches your video to fit that ratio?
    It ends up bringing the video down to 640 X 480 but not without distorting it first.
    Any answers? Ideas?

    If you are creating video for standard definition broadcast (or DVD distribution) you must maintain a 720 x 480 rectangular pixel image. That specification hasn't and will never change (for reverse compatibility purposes).
    If you are creating for high definition you need to research which format is required, there are high def specs that use rectangular pixels for distribution and convert to square for display.

  • [Missing] Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) option

    This happened in 2 edit suites. I fixed it in edit 1 by resetting PRAM and trashing prefs. Edit 2 won't see it.
    I can capture via Firewire from this deck (Sony M35U), so I obviously have a connection. System Profiler shows the deck and all its info, so it's obviously recognized by the computer. If I capture via the AJA, I can still set deck control over Firewire, so it's obviously THERE.
    Yet, when I go to View/Video Output, it's not even an option. I don't even get the [Missing] Firewire NTSC 720 x 480 option. It's just not there. I have all the AJA options, but not the FIrewire ones. Anyone seen this disappear like that?
    Tried:
    Resetting PRAM several times
    Trashing prefs (all of 'em)
    Disconnecting all cables and reconnecting
    Checked all of the settings on the deck several times
    Changed Firewire cable twice
    WOndering if this is an AJA conflict, but it works now in the other edit suite, which is a clone of this one. Weird and frustrating.
    Haven't tried setting up a new user yet, gonna try that now. If you have a clue, please clue me in…

    All the settings were exactly the same. I changed nothing. It was a weird experience, but on a whim I decided to simply swap the decks in the rooms, wondering if there was some corrupt communication from the decks via the Firewire. Seems that was the case, because once I switched rooms, everything worked. Glad it worked out, because I was about to send the decks in for repair, having tested the ports, the Firewire cables, and FCP, and all came out working fine. Can't explain it, but it works.
    Thanks.

  • 640 x 480 Video Being Exported As 720 x 480

    A few years ago I created (essentially) a video slide show in Final Cut Pro by importing 640dpi x 480dpi TIFF files and exporting them as a QuickTime movie. I'm trying to recreate the video using Final Cut Express HD, but every time I export the file, all of the 640dpi images are stretched to 720dpi. How do I export it as 640 x 480?

    if you put a 640x480 image in the FCE timeline it will have a black edge around it because it's not standard format size. It's aspect ratio is adjusted to accommodate the change in pixel aspect ratio. You can see this in the Distort section of the Motion tab.
    If the scale the image to fit the screen you're scaling it to 720x480 with its digital video aspect ratio. If you really want it 640x480, like for web display, then you have to export to QuickTime Conversion and use a custom size that 640x480.

  • 24' cinema display stuck in 640 X 480 - unless used in Apple Store!

    I really need some help with my new MBP and 24" LED cinema display that is driving me crazy. The first part of the problem is that when I bring my MBP out of sleep and attach the monitor, or if I simply disconnect the monitor and reconnect it without sleeping, it only shows 640X480 and no options for other display settings.
    I have tried a great many things and suggestions, including deleting the com.apple.windowserver.plist files (system and byhost versions), repairing the permissions, resetting the pram. Nothing makes any difference to this behaviour.
    The second part of the problem is that having decided it was the monitor itself I took both the display and the MBP back to the apple store today where it worked faultlessly - no amount of rebooting, sleeping and attaching/detaching would make the error occur. Once we gave and I got them both home again - it reverted to the previous, faulty behaviour! We wondered in the store if it was a faulty cable - but no amount of wriggling of the cable makes any difference.
    When The display is correct, the system profiler shows:
    LED Cinema Display:
    Resolution: 1920 x 1200
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Software
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Not Supported
    Connection Type: DisplayPort
    When the display goes to its 640 X 480 mode, the system profiler shows:
    Display:
    Resolution: 640 x 480
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Rotation: Supported
    Connection Type: DisplayPort
    I found a few things relating to issues with recognition of monitors when coming out of sleep - but this monitor was made specifically for this MBP, and others don't seem to be having this problem. My MBP also works fine with my DELL flatscreen display at a high resolution.
    Anyone got any idea what else I can change before I have to completely rebuild my MBP. I am really confused by this - why would it insist on working in the Apple Store and refuse to work correctly at home?

    First off, the power cable is not permanently attached to the monitor. It is a 3-pronged, grounded connector at the monitor end. I know because I just disconnected mine and freed up the entire cable. Since I'm one of those who just does stuff even when it may not always be well-advised, I can report on an experience that could bear on your situation.
    I had my Mac Pro running when I reached around the back of my 24" LED display and pulled the plug from the monitor. Of course, the monitor instantly went "black". I quickly replugged it back in (no, I didn't shut anything down and risked frying the monitor). When the monitor returned to life it was "stuck" in 640 x 480 mode and I could only "restart" or "shut down" to get it restored to the 1920 x 1200 mode I keep it in.
    This suggests to me that the problem lies in your cabling and power delivery system. Perhaps you are getting power surges or power spikes that have the equivalent effect of taking your monitor "off" and then returning the monitor to a 640 x 480 condition after restoring power.
    If it were me, I'd try with a new monitor cable to power. I'm betting your problem doesn't have anything to do with the monitor to computer cable, but it isn't the only cable here. Something is disrupting the constant power feed and I'm betting the problem is amplified by faulty power cord. Since I just replicated your situation by literally pulling the plug and replugging it in, it seems to me that this would be a fruitful area of investigation.
    Hope this leads you somewhere positive.

  • Simple Transformation to deserialize an XML file into ABAP data structures?

    I'm attempting to write my first simple transformation to deserialize
    an XML file into ABAP data structures and I have a few questions.
    My simple transformation contains code like the following
    <tt:transform xmlns:tt="http://www.sap.com/transformation-templates"
                  xmlns:pp="http://www.sap.com/abapxml/types/defined" >
    <tt:type name="REPORT" line-type="?">
      <tt:node name="COMPANY_ID" type="C" length="10" />
      <tt:node name="JOB_ID" type="C" length="20" />
      <tt:node name="TYPE_CSV" type="C" length="1" />
      <tt:node name="TYPE_XLS" type="C" length="1" />
      <tt:node name="TYPE_PDF" type="C" length="1" />
      <tt:node name="IS_NEW" type="C" length="1" />
    </tt:type>
    <tt:root name="ROOT2" type="pp:REPORT" />
        <QueryResponse>
        <tt:loop ref="ROOT2" name="line">
          <QueryResponseRow>
            <CompanyID>
              <tt:value ref="$line.COMPANY_ID" />
            </CompanyID>
            <JobID>
              <tt:value ref="$line.JOB_ID" />
            </JobID>
            <ExportTypes>
              <tt:loop>
                <ExportType>
                   I don't know what to do here (see item 3, below)
                </ExportType>
              </tt:loop>
            </ExportTypes>
            <IsNew>
              <tt:value ref="$line.IS_NEW"
              map="val(' ') = xml('false'), val('X') = xml('true')" />
            </IsNew>
          </QueryResponseRow>
          </tt:loop>
        </QueryResponse>
        </tt:loop>
    1. In a DTD, an element can be designated as occurring zero or one
    time, zero or more times, or one or more times. How do I write the
    simple transformation to accommodate these possibilities?
    2. In trying to accommodate the "zero or more times" case, I am trying
    to use the <tt:loop> instruction. It occurs several layers deep in the
    XML hierarchy, but at the top level of the ABAP table. The internal
    table has a structure defined in the ABAP program, not in the data
    dictionary. In the simple transformation, I used <tt:type> and
    <tt:node> to define the structure of the internal table and then
    tried to use <tt:loop ref="ROOT2" name="line"> around the subtree that
    can occur zero or more times. But every variation I try seems to get
    different errors. Can anyone supply a working example of this?
    3. Among the fields in the internal table, I've defined three
    one-character fields named TYPE_CSV, TYPE_XLS, and TYPE_PDF. In the
    XML file, I expect zero to three elements of the form
    <ExportType exporttype='csv' />
    <ExportType exporttype='xls' />
    <ExportType exporttype='pdf' />
    I want to set field TYPE_CSV = 'X' if I find an ExportType element
    with its exporttype attribute set to 'csv'. I want to set field
    TYPE_XLS = 'X' if I find an ExportType element with its exporttype
    attribute set to 'xls'. I want to set field TYPE_PDF = 'X' if I find
    an ExportType element with its exporttype attribute set to 'pdf'. How
    can I do that?
    4. For an element that has a value like
    <ErrorCode>123</ErrorCode>
    in the simple transformation, the sequence
    <ErrorCode>  <tt:value ref="ROOT1.CODE" />  </ErrorCode>
    seems to work just fine.
    I have other situations where the XML reads
    <IsNew value='true' />
    I wanted to write
    <IsNew>
            <tt:value ref="$line.IS_NEW"
            map="val(' ') = xml('false'), val('X') = xml('true')" />
           </IsNew>
    but I'm afraid that the <tt:value> fails to deal with the fact that in
    the XML file the value is being passed as the value of an attribute
    (named "value"), rather than the value of the element itself. How do
    you handle this?

    Try this code below:
    data  l_xml_table2  type table of xml_line with header line.
    W_filename - This is a Path.
      if w_filename(02) = '
        open dataset w_filename for output in binary mode.
        if sy-subrc = 0.
          l_xml_table2[] = l_xml_table[].
          loop at l_xml_table2.
            transfer l_xml_table2 to w_filename.
          endloop.
        endif.
        close dataset w_filename.
      else.
        call method cl_gui_frontend_services=>gui_download
          exporting
            bin_filesize = l_xml_size
            filename     = w_filename
            filetype     = 'BIN'
          changing
            data_tab     = l_xml_table
          exceptions
            others       = 24.
        if sy-subrc <> 0.
          message id sy-msgid type sy-msgty number sy-msgno
                     with sy-msgv1 sy-msgv2 sy-msgv3 sy-msgv4.
        endif.

    One of the folders on my external hard drive has transformed into a unix executable file and I can no longer access my files. Is there any way to save the data?

    Wow, have seen Files do that, but a whole Folder as I recall!
    Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Mac Mini defaults to 640 by 480 and can't be reset?

    Hello fellow macfolks...
    I have a Mac Mini that I use only on an occasional basis. Tonight I connected it to my trusty, known-good NEC 20 inch monitor, and lo and behold, the mini boots up at 640 by 480 resolution with NO other choices in teh display panel.
    I tried resetting the NV RAM, no good.
    I tried to do a software update, and believe it or not, YOU CAN'T CLICK ON THE AGREED BUTTON ON THE SOFTWARE LICENSE TO UPDATE THE SYSTEM SOFTWARE!!!! And return, or enter don't work either.
    Any suggestions as to what I should do? I looked around for a display preferences file that I might trash, but none are obvious. I tried a different (known good) monitor with a different cable, SAME THING.
    I then took the thing to Frys and tried it with an HDMI monitor... it came up at a higher resolution, but still only one setting...
    Is this a hardware problem?
    Any help any of you geniuses at large can provide would be appreciated...
    And Apple... you need to make sure that system updates can be performed at any resolution, or make your base default something higher please!

    Macs to the Max!

    If you did a clean install of the system then it is likely a hardware issue. Someone here more knowledeable than myself may know something more to help you, but after exhausting all other options I would lean towards a hardware problem.
    You never said if when you started from the system disk if it also ran in 640x480. While I know you cannot change resolutions from the startup CD, it would be readily apparent if it too was running in 640x480 or if the other issue you had appeared. That would certainly indicate a hardware issue since the install disk should be a "clean" version of the system. You also never answered the question about safe boot, but after a clean install I would think that point is moot anyway.
    I am assuming you did a clean install of the system, which if software was an issue it should have resolved it. I am unaware of any firmware or other updates that may have caused (or coulkd fix) this problem, but again I have not had any issues with any of the minis I own so I have not done any amount of troubleshooting.
    Sorry I could not be of more help.

    Hi
    For Complex conversion you have to use xml.conversionType as "StructPlain2XML"

  • Result of idvd burned DVD is very poor (only windowsorigin files)

    Hi folks,
    I'm trying since some days to get a windows file (mpg) on to a DVD. After converting the file to the varoius formats like mpg, mp4, mov and dv I get always a very poor quality DVD. As I changed also the bitrate to 16000 bits/s nothing changed.
    I'm wondering if there is a little trick on that?
    My problem is that my VCR is windows based therefore I get the windows format and I have to convert them with FFMPEG. Also I had imported movies via my old Casette-VCR / Handycam and no problem Quality was 100%
    I'm now very confused how I can solve the problem because from time to time I'd like to archive some recorded shows or movies.
    Does anybody have an idea how to solve this? Any comment his highly appreciated

    I am guessing the Windows MPG format is referring to Microsoft's DVR-MS format which is basically an MPEG2 in a different envelope. ffmpegx will convert DVR-MS on a Mac.
    I recently processed some MPEG2 files using ffmpegx myself. I set it to pass the audio through without conversion and to convert the video to MPEG2 with the same resolution and bitrate as the original (which was 4350kbps). This seems to have produced excellent results when then burnt to a video DVD using Toast. Toast unlike iDVD can directly accept MPEG2 files (although not DVR-MS).
    Prior to that I had occasion to want to convert two MPEG files to an iDVD project and iDVD will not directly accept MPEG1 or MPEG2 files. If I had merely converted them to MPEG4 or other typical format then I would loose a fair amount of quality. Instead I converted them to Pixlet format at high quality (more than really needed) which minimised the degradation that occurred. iDVD then imported those files happily. The Pixlet files while I was using them where 10 times as big as the originals!

  • 640 x 480

    I need to have my mini/display set at 640 x 480. So, after I change the resolution to 640 x 480 then restart the computer, the resolution automatically switches back to 1024 x 786. I've tried this on numerous displays all with the same outcome. This is the only resolution in the list of options given in the preferences that this happens to. All others resstart just as I set them in the preferences...any clue as to what is going on? Any help would be appreciated!

    That's a really interesting problem. 640x480 is the lowest resolution "console" mode that a Mac puts out. I never noticed before that you can't leave a Mac set at that resolution through a restart, but I have honestly never tried.
    Does the bad behavior change if you select different refresh rates? Maybe that would trigger the Mac to think "you really mean it" that you want 640x480 if you set a high refresh rate, like 85Hz or more. Alternately, if you are really desperate for a solution, it might work to use a product like SwitchRes X to build a custom 640x480 resolution. I would think that it would stick in that case and not change on you during restarts.

  • Suddenly LED 24" Arrangement broken, only get 640 x 480 resolution

This morning I fired up my MacBook Pro and the LED 24" and the latter will only display 640 X 480 resolution (very big with jaggies). Also the prior arrangement setting is gone and cannot be reset. I've tried unplugging the LED and restarting the MacBook Pro. Neither changes the situation.
    Incidentally, in the Display window of System Preferences the MacBook Pro shows everything as normal. The Display window of the LED shows the ONLY resolution available is 640 X 280. In other words, it is not as though other options are presented to select. Toggling mirroring doesn't seem to do anything either.
    Please help. In this condition the LED is useless.

    Well, I seemed to have fixed the problem by unplugging the LED from both the MacBook Pro and the wall outlet. After counting to 10 I plugged it all back together and the LED is showing the proper resolution, arrangement and resolution options.
    Of course, I'm still interested in trying to figure out what happened in the first place. If any of you have ideas, I'd like to hear them. The LED is plugged into a surge strip, so I'm discounting that. Perhaps while I was away last night, there was a power failure. Anyway, I've had this display for 8 months, love it and it has never behaved this way before.

  • ITunes, TV Series - Menu display's the 853 x 480 files as well as the 1280 x 720HD files?

    Hi All
    Can anybody tell me why the iTunes, TV Series - Menu display's the 853 x 480 files as well as the 1280 x 720HD files?
    It means when you scroll through you TV or film collections using your remote you get a duplicate title. I can understand having 2 files for viewing on the iPhone or HDTV but you would think iTunes would filter and display the files subject to how you were viewing your TV shows etc?
    Can anybody tell me how to solve this?

    3 Items show up, all the same:
    ThinkPad Display 1280 x 800
    I first tried to remove, rebooted, and nothing happened.
    When I went back in to device manager, they all 3 showed back up
    Second time, disabled all 3, rebooted and nothing happened.
    Third time tried to remove 2 of the 3, nothing happened.
    Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!
    I have been working on this for over a month.  If I upgrade to Windows 7, I can get online, will all of these problems go away?
    I have all data and pics that I need saved as well.  I just don't have the recovery disc.  I am thinking I might as well
