IDVD - 16:9 video appears as 4:3

Hi everyone,
I know this has been a problem for many but i'm yet to find a fix that works!
If i import any 16:9 video into iDVD, it appears as 4:3 video in the preview and when burnt to disc! If i play the files in quicktime they appear correctly however...
I've gone thru numerous 'fixes' on the net, from opening with QT7 and checking resolution output and aspect ratio. Have tried the anamorphicizer program also. All to no avail.
If I choose "share with iDVD" from iMovie however, the videos work in 16:9. I don't want to do this however - i want to keep things in DV format to minimise the amount of processing between apps and the degradation in quality.
I can't understand why there would be such a glaring issue like this in a machine that is supposed to take away alot of the complications around this sort of thing. Especially one that's supposed excel at video work!!! I'm back to editing DV on my PC at the minute!
HELP!?

I have the same Problem and the same Opinion.
What's the Problem to apple to fix it. It's Part of the PAL 16:9 Standard that the Resolution for 16:9-Material is stored in 720x576. With the PixelAspectRatio the players know how to present it in the right Ratio. Theres no need to reencode the Movies, it's just a flag in the container, that has to be set.
Hey apple, what's the Difficulty changing that. I have a DV-Video in 16:9 that contains the right PixelAspctRatio and confirms the Standard so I will not buy quicktime pro to fix it!!!
Please, do your job right!

    Hi Jon
If you remember my video (640x480) NTSC in iMovie Project.
Someone told me that exporting movie to DV video QT from iMovie share option, for burning in iDVD, is the best quality possible.
    Is this true ?
If so what are the parameters ? Again is for seeing in a widescreen TV

As usual, this is really a matter of individual opinion. I personally prefer the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). It is newer codec specifically designed for use as an "intermediate" editing compression format. It is slightly more efficient than DV-25 (18-20 Mbps for audio + video vs. 28.5 Mbps) and is less restrictive (i.e.,the user has more control over certain settings). On the other hand, the very nature of having a highly standardized (few user option) compression format does appeal to many users since there are fewer things the user can mess up.

Bit rate, frame rate, and encoding dimensions are part of the standard and do not have user parameters as such other than selecting the NTSC or PAL standard. With regard to the aspect ratio, you simply select which you want to use—4:3 or 16:9. However, as I've previously mentioned, it is possible to distort your output by either entering the wrong aspect or to actually "lose" the embedded flag/value in some work flows. (I.e., a 4:3 aspect movie displayed at 16:9 makes the people an objects appear short and fat while encoding a 16:9 aspect movie as 4:3 will make them look tall and skinny.) Movies should always be encoded in their original aspect ratio since any modern digital TV will allow the user to disport—i.e., force a 4:3 file to fully fill a 16:9 display screen. In fact, some will even allow you to spread the distortion evenly across your screen or to the spread it proportionally. (On my set these features are called "H-Fill" and "Justify" respectively.) If you were to use the AIC video compression format rather than DV, then you would have to manually enter the display dimensions for the "standard" and/or "definition" format you are targeting.

  • Video appearing in a different location

    Hello everyone,
I'm somewhat new to Dreamweaver and just completed a website with embedded QuickTime videos. All the pages look identical except for one in which the video appears in a different location on the web, than it does in Dreamweaver and the browser preview. The code for each page layout is identical. Any help resolving this would be appreciated.

Post a URL to the page please.  The answer is in your code.

It sounds like you want to know how to share iMovie Theater videos between your devices with iCloud Drive. The article below provides a lot of great information that should answer your question and walk you through setting up the devices.

  • Some video appears currupted in windows 7 and cant be played!!.

Hello, I was watching videos on my laptop normally but suddenly most videos appeared corrupted and won't open, I cant play them any more. I've formatted my computer but sadly they are still corrupted please help me what the hell happened to those files????I've
tried an anti-malware software but it didn't found anything...

So when you play them after exporting in QT and do get info what are the codecs and bitrates?
If you want to have life easier use MPEG Streamclip, open, select export to MPEG-4 and pick a preset from the iTunes button and you will be happy. And it also does batches and you may find it is also faster.
    And it is free.

  • What defines the order videos appear in iTunes U?

I've got some videos that appear in a different order on the iPad than they show up in ITunes on my Desktop. How can you control the order with which the videos appear on the iPad?

This has been discussed on the forum before. You might want to search using the search fnction on the right.
I think the solution is to put them in a playlist. It may be necessary to add track number too.

  • Some music videos appear twice on my iPhone but not in my iTunes library. How can I resolve this?

    Hello everyone.
I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 5 and I am using the latest version of iTunes 10.5
I have downloaded three music videos by the same artist. The three videos appear in my Music library in iTunes
On my iPhone two of the videos appear twice with the other one appearing once as it should do. I have played all of these videos and they work fine. It is just annoying that two out of the three music videos I have are listed twice on my iPhone.
Would anyone be able to help me resolve this issue?
    Thank you.

  • Safari HTML5 video appears dark

The video plays just fine in every browser, and I use the standard 3-codec approach. On every other browser, the video "melts" into the white background intentionally, but in Safari, the video appears gray and ruins the effect - any ideas why?

  • Making video appear as if it is being pounded

Working on another football project. I have some great music that has a very distinct pounding sound during the end of the song (heavy bass). I am looking to find a way to make the entire video appear to be pounded, as if it had been hit by a hammer.
I guess the best way to describe what I am trying to do is something like an active, pounding livetype font.
I have tried everything I can think of using different filters, etc. but without any succcess. Does anyone have an idea that might help here?
    Thanks in advance.

    Tom:
Thanks. Will try that tonight and let you know. Sounds exactly like the kind of effect I am looking to achieve!

  • When i import videos from QuickTime Player, the video appear in red, how i can fix this

    HI, sr/miss:
i have some troubles when in many times i had to import videos from quick time player to imovie 10, in all cases the videos appears in red and i dont know how i can fix this, so please if anyone can help me i really would appreciate it.
in addition, i am not an expert in imovie 10, so be straightforward with the answer.
    thanks.

I am a complete novice with Final Cut Pro X.  I have learned enough to do what I need to do.  That being said I would gladly give you that info if you would point me to where I would find it.  When I do a "get info" on the mp4 file it tells me that the dimension is 640x480, the codecs are H.264, AAC, and I have 2 audio channels.  I did not download the additional content for FCP.
