IDVD 3.0.1 Burn Quits Program

Hi,
I'm new here, people...and definitely new to iDVD. Hoping for some guidance. This seems like a good place to look for it.
Just made a nice 2 minute iMovie (3.0.3), using lots of stills, transitions, and video. 646 MB. Soundtrack's key and very nice. Used the Help instructions ("Exporting your movie for viewing in another format") but only came out with a great quality QuickTime movie that wouldn't play on my DVD player (?).
I need to get this to my friend with a PC (he just won't listen to me) and a DVD player. So I tried going through iDVD 3.0.1.
Pressed the "Create iDVD Project" button in iMovie and got the iDVD screen up. Put a brand new Memorex DVD-R in and pressed "Burn". It started at "28 minutes remaining". Everything seemed fine until it reached "19 minutes remaining". Then the program quit.
This happened twice...both times with the same outcome: no finished DVD product.
Can somebody give me some advice on this? Also: if I DO use iDVD, do I have to use those themes or can I just send this piece as a straight movie?
Thanks

Welcome to the discussions.
The right place? Well, almost. There is an iDVD discussion, too. This is the iMovie discussion.
Anyway, you must use a theme in iDVD, but the themes can be customized. I often use the "Sky" theme and replace the moving sky with a still from the movie.
Try the iDVD tutorial, it's really good.
If you don't use iDVD (or another DVD authoring software) you wind up with a DVD-ROM with a QT movie and those can't be played on a TV.
For your burning problems:
You need lot's of free space on your hard drive, up to 10GB.
Don't run anything else at the same time.
Set both Screen Saver AND Energy Saver to "Never".
If this doesn't help, try the iDVD discussion.

  • IDVD ejects disk before burn is complete

I am attempting to burn a large combined video and data DVD project (6.8 GB), and encountering a problem in which iDVD ejects the disk from the drive just BEFORE the burn reaches completion. The progress bar just sits there at 100% saying that its last task is done, but never actually indicates completion (even if I wait several hours). The only way out is to hit the Cancel button.
I have tried burning both in Best Quality and in Profession Quality Encoding -- both exhibit the same problem. Burning to a disk image completes successfully, but iDVD warns that disks burned from such an image will not work correctly in some players, so it is not useful to me.
As for the DVD produced, the video content is corrupted -- some parts play, but others just get stuck, or worse yet, hang the player. The DVD-ROM data contents seem to be there in the directory -- but the files are corrupted, apparently having never actually been written to the disk.
The drive in use is the one which shipped with this MacPro1,1 (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D). The target disk is a Memorex DVD+R DL. iDVD version 7.0.3 (1110).
I hope someone out there can help, as my project is already overdue...
    Thanks in advance,
    Josh

I had the same problem burning a 2 hour, 33 minute video to an HP DVD+R DL using iDVD 6 on Professional Quality. All of the files are there and nothing is corrupted, but iDVD did eject the disc and showed a "Done" dialog box, but the program still showed that there was "less than one minute remaining" (much like the odd flaw in iMovie when importing a large AVI where the program freezes with "less than one minute remaining," but really requires an additional 20 minutes to finish importing). The disc was burned using the factory superdrive, HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N.
Now the DVD will only play about the first hour of video on any DVD player, including my Mac - it says it's "skipping over damaged area."
If there is any advice out there on how to fix this problem, or any explanation of why iDVD ejects the disc before it is done burning, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • IDVD 4.0.1 "unexpectedly quits"

I have a dual 450 Mhz G4 running 10.3.9, 1.3 gig of ram, 30 gig HD w/ about 19gig of free space, an NEC 3520A internal dvd/cd burner. I am attempting to burn the tutorial dvd project within iDVD but i have gotten the "application unexpectedly quits" message. The first time it came up was after 12 hours of being in stage 4, the next occurance was after 26 hours in stage 4. The ONLY reason why im' trying to burn this is because on my own imovie project of 15 minutes it continualy got stuck in stage 4 as well and i had read somewhere in these forums that it is suggested to burn the tutorial to get an idea of how long a burn will take on my individual system.
I have installed patchburn, installed the 'easter egg', ran cashoutX, mac janitor, disc utitlity to repair permissions, preferential treatment, deleted pfiles for idvd/ imovie. restarted before burning and clicked burn once and then again after i saw the radiation symbol and waited for the prompt to feed a dvd to it.
I'd like to know if maybe my slow system bus is what is holding things up and causing the crash. I have been considering purcahsing a G4 laptop or a G5 DP desktop but don't quite have the $$ so i would prefer to just upgrade my system if that is all it needs to do this type of video work. HELP!!!! plzzzz

You have covered most points but you should also make sure no other applications are running and ideally restart the system before the "burn". You might like to look at my strategy as a checklist

  • Simple question. Since apple has extinguished iDVD Are there any other Software programs that can produce the end product iDVD did?

There are many a thousands of people who are producingvideos on completed DVDs. As an amateur videographer using iMovie first nowusing Final Cut pro to produce completed ready to distribute DVDs, I find ithard to believe at the meeting you mentioned anyone with common sense wouldhave explained the scenario above. On an amateur level so many folks have beencreating videos of Weddings, Home Movies, and many different Special Events. Onin particular are sports events. I shoot a sports event like Mix Martial ArtsEvents utilizing several video cameras. Then editing with Final cut Pro andsometimes iMovie. All of my completed videos that have been edited in either ofthese two programs are shared (like hand in glove) with iDVD. Short of steppinginto the commercial world Apple has deleted many people from producing a semiprofessional looking product.
I do not know if the can be answered here in the format buthere it goes!!
Simple question. Since apple has extinguished iDVD Are thereany other Software programs that can produce the end product iDVD did? Googlesearches with years of outdated info does not give good references. Withoutlooking to go commercial, the Apple Macintosh Computers built internal Softwareprogram like iDVD is the only program I know of that can help folks on mylevel!!
It doesn't seem there are any programs that takes off fromwhere iDVD left off. My end products (complete videography from start tofinished printed and burned DVD) needs to have the mapping and control usingthe semi professional look iDVD gave!
    Have any ssuggestions?

    Thank you Klaus 1
I have 4 latest Macs All have iDVD. The question was not where to get iDVD.
The question for anyone who knows is: Since apple has extinguished iDVD Are there any other Software programs that can produce the end product iDVD did?
I appreciate your input but it realy does not answer the question. iDVD will soon not be able to work with newer versions of Macs as it has been left behind by Apple!
    Once again:
It doesn't seem there are any programs that takes off from where iDVD left off.
My end products needs to have the mapping and control using the semi professional look iDVD gave me.
Imovie cannot do this. More importantly imovie cannot save the project to Video_TS folders like iDVD did.
    Anyone have suggestions?

If you don't have a SuperDrive you will not be able to burn DVDs.
Did iDVD come preinstalled on your Mac?  If it did then you should have a SuperDrive and be able to burn DVDS. Check the Disk Burning section of System Information
to see what you can read and write with your optical drive:

  • IDVD 5 will not burn - Query

I have a LaCie DVD burner which I successfully use with iDVD and have had no problems. Today I have added a 250GB LaCie 250GB hard disk for extra video editing space. I have edited and successfully saved a trial project on to the new disc.
When I fired up iDVD and tried to burn a dvd from this project the burner asked me to insert a disc; then the iDVD 'insert your dvd' request just sat here with the burn button spinning around on the iDVD page. I can get no further in spite of it recognising the presence of a disc some of the time when I place one in the burner (once or twice - not). I have also tried a second project of different material with the same results.
Have I confused iDVD by moving my video footage? Do I need to adjust any of my iDVD settings?
    Marjorie

It looks as though your suggestion has helped. As my Mac disc was very full OSX couldn't work properly, so I moved a lot of software on to my external disc, this has given me the room I need.
How I work it now is as follows, I load the dvd project onto my external disc, edit it in iMovie there, then move it on to the 'home' computer disc for final editing and burning.
My problem was, therefore, not with iDVD at all, I had not left myself enough room to run OSX not iDVD. My burner and my external disc function correctly now.
    Many thanks,
    Marjorie

  • Idvd project won't burn, have I lost my suoerdrive ???

Hi, firstly I'd just like to say I'm an idiot, here's why
I had a large important movie to edit (22gb) in idvd4 on an emac. Did all the work in i movie, sent to idvd but wouldn't burn as I had too little disk space. So I exported from i movie to QT pro and then exported to QT movie and compressed the file , then brought back in to idvd at a suitable size. All good everything working in idvd ( except chapter markers )
Anyway heres the problem, to free up some disk space I previosely deleted loads of stuff I didn't need or use on the computer however I think I may have erased my superdrive/dvd burner using the disk utility. When I look in finder it is just showing the hard drive ? Is this permanent or can I somehow retrieve the situation.
Can I use the restore function in disk utility? How can I see if my superdrive is working correctly or is even there at all ? the dvd player seems to work ok.
What is happening at the moment is everything goes fine with encoding etc but when it comes to saying insert blank disc it just keeps popping them back out asking for a blank disc again. I have tried loads of different discs.
I have an external burner but using toast it won't recognise the idvd project.
This is an important project for me which has took me days to sort so any help greatly appreciated
    Thanks

    Good morning,
Bengt has good suggestions, so work with his ideas (and you may find your superdrive is just fine, especially since DVDs still play on it). It sounds like you have several things going on.
As he says, first of all, you'll need space on your boot drive for iDVD to work. Your iMovie project and your iDVD project could have been created on an external drive (I use a Firewire drive, and don't know if a USB 2.0 drive would be fast enough). You can recreate your iDVD project and save it to the external drive, but I don't think I'd move the iMovie project at this point because iMovie may get confused where the source files are (anyone have experience with this?).
Second topic - iDVD doesn't want us to compress files and it will attempt to convert anything you give it into the standard DVD format of mpeg-2. iDVD "cares" about length, not the file size. For videos up to an hour, use the Best Performance setting in iDVD preferences. For longer productions, use Best Quality (I don't remember when Apple changed that algorithm from a 90 min max to a 120 min max).
Third topic - your loss of chapter markers is probably the result of exporting and converting, so another reason not to do the file compression.
Fourth topic - disk rejects. This could be a variety of factors (dusty burner, bad or incompatible disks, a Finder setting, etc.). I'd start by using high quality disks (Verbatim DVD-R is often recommended, I also use Sony DVD-R; don't use +R or rewritable disks unless your drive specifically handles them, and note that they are generally less compatible than -R disks).

    Hello TchrDi,
I suggest this article named Archived - iDVD: Troubleshooting issues with burning discs found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1583.
It is pretty lengthy, but also pretty thorough.

Assuming your mac has at least 25 GB's of available hard drive space on the boot volume and an S-Drive as opposed to a combo drive; the latter only reads dvd's while the former both reads and writes to dvd, then you should be able to, yes.
But follow the iMovie> iDvd Tutorial/s first.

  • IDVD quality *****- any other burning programs to use with iMovie

I've made an all picture slideshow, about 4 minutes, with music in iMovie for my husband to show clients (for photography business). Looks great in iMovie, once burned with iDVD in best & professional quality, it looks horrible. Pixilated, grainy, and not good enough to show clients. Anyone recommend other burning programs to purchase? Any other ideas to make this look good?

    Hi
Doing slideShows in iMovie 1 to HD 6. I don't use "Share/Export to iDVD" from
    within iMovie.
I close iMovie and import the Show from iDVD = iDVD renders and does this OK.
    iMovie'08 & 09 - Never tired that.
Alt. to iDVD is to burn with Roxio Toast™ ($$$ - cost)
    • Export out (any iMovie version) as High Quality QuickTime .mov and
    • Import this into Toast™

  • Can't burn to DVD from iMovie (4.0) using iDVD.  Can I use another program?

Suddenly, after making several DVDs with this computer using its old version of iMovie without trouble, I can't burn my latest creation...I'm getting a message saying that "You cannot use this version of the application iDVD with this version of Mac OS X."
I cannot update to the newest OS X Snow Leopard, because I've tried and my computer is not intel-based.
So, has my iDVD application has been updated to suddenly be incompatible?? How has it worked before?
(I've tried to upgrade my iMovie application to the current iMovie '11, but my computer is not intel-based.)
Is there another solution to my problem? Is there another application that I can use to burn from iMovie to a DVD besides using iDVD? (Remember, I have an old computer.) :o)
Thank you so much for any help you can give!

You can try using BURN at http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html

  • IDVD partial encode, then stalls/quits

Now trying for third time:  I've added 3 clips to the project and when Burn is clicked and 4.7 GB disc inserted in drive, (Pioneer DVD-RW 107D), the encode starts and goes pretty much maybe 3/4s of the way through and then stalls, with the progress bar stationary for several hours.  Apparently it then quits, since when I come back to look, it says iDVD unexpectedly quit - or some such nonsense.
What is going on?  If my fault, I need to know, but I've followed the directions as carefully as possible.  When restarting it seems as if the program is doing the encode all over again.
The 3 QuickTime clips' filesizes are 4.19, 2.76 and 9,94 GB.  At first attempt to encode and burn, a drop down dialog states that it's too big to burn and suggests modifying the encoding value. I go to Project Info and change Best Performance to High Quality.  This seems to satisfy, and on clicking Burn, I insert disc and it seem to get going - encoding all over again, each time. At some point - as mentioned above, the crash or stall seems to occur.  Is there a way to check if any files have been encoded, before doing it all over again?
I thought Apple products were supposed to work.  I'm getting tired of this....any help appreciated  (very much!)
I think this is iDVD v. 8 - came with iLife '08 suite.
    thanks

Read Bengt Wärleby's post in this topic: Multiplexing Error: Apple Support Communities
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • SOS... PLEASE, I REALLY NEED HELP... IDVD IS HAVING TROUBLE BURNING...

    Hey guys,
I am burning from IDVD, but after burning 2-3 DVDs on Dual Layer DVD's, it KICKS me out of the program. When this happens, I have to go BACK again and start the long burning process of rendering the menus, etc, etc... I don't know what's happening. Is it that the Mac has a problem? Or is this normal to render and burn an hour long DVD? So far, it has taken me the whole afternoon to burn JUST 2 DVD's. Is that normal? Also, is there a way to tell the MAC to burn a certain amount of copies, just like the Adobe Premier gives us that option? I can't seem to find that option anywhere.
I've converted the project into disk image on the desktop but once it's as disk image and I try to open it, it displays a window which has several files but when I click on them nothing happens, they don't open. I don't know what why.
I have to burn 100 DVD's for Monday... I REALLY need your help.
    Thanks,
    Claudia.

    Claudia
You need to a make disc image from the file menu within iDVD6 ....can you do that?
From the disc image you can make as many copies as you wish and you won't have to wait long hours for encoding the entire project all over again.
Also I need you to tell us how much available hard drive space you currently have on the main HD / startup volume. You need at least 20GB's Do you have this kind of HD space or not?
iDVD6 will start the whole process all over again each time you quit from the app itself....but it normally offers up the option to keep making additional copies without quitting. Apparently this feature either isn't working properly for you or perhaps you missed this particular dialog box.... I don't know.
Nevertheless, keep in mind that iDVD6 is an authoring program and wasn't really written as a burn tool. That's not one of it's stronger points. Leave the burning to DVD-R media to either apple's disc utilities or roxio toast where you can also lower the burn speed to 4x or lower.
Hope this Helps but if not just come on back.
