IDVD 3 calibration problems when burning

Help! I'm having calibration error messages when burning iDVD-R discs in iDVD 3. I've had success in the past with Maxell DVD-R 8X discs but other brands and other speeds won't work. I can't find Maxell DVD-R 8X discs anymore. Do I need to update the iDVD software? I'm at a loss to figure this one out.

hi sue,
i purchased the verbatim dvd-r and burned 1 dvd successfully. unfortunately, it will not burn again and i am prompted with the same error message: Power calibration area error: (0x73, 0x03). what is weird is that when i tried to burn a .mov file using toast, i was prompted with an error similar to the idvd error (0x73, 0x03). Could this be a problem with both idvd and imovie? i am able to burn data onto dvds within toast, just not files that i have created using imovie and idvd. i hope this makes sense!
thanks

  • Power calibration error when burning?

I get a power calibration error when burning from IDVD.
Any suggestions as to how to fix it?

Basically a power calibration is the drive writes to the blank and then tries to read it back and adjusts the laser power accordingly to get a proper burn. So there are a number of reasons you might get this problem.
One is the media itself. A bad disc or poor quality media might give you this error.
Next, you may have a dirty laser and running on of those cleaning CDs (they have little brushes on them to dust off the laser) might do the trick.
Third, could be a laser on the drive is giving up the ghost. Hopefully it is not the last one.

  • Multiplexing problems when burning

Using iDVD to burn a DVD, I get a message at the end of the process stating that there were multiplexing problems during burning. When I try to play the DVD, the introduction plays fine, but when I try to play any of the three movies, created in iMovie, I get a "not permitted" message and the movie does not play. I have burned the DVD twice and got the same result both times.
I have created several DVDs in the past, using iDVD, and did not have any problems. I have been using a LaCie DVD drive to burn my DVDs, since I do not have a superdrive on my iMac.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd make sure the basics are covered.
Lots of memory helps; and you'll need 10-15 gigs of space on the hard drive for scratch space.
Buy good quality disks - I've seen recommendations for Maxell, Sony, Verbatim, TDK and a few others based on testing. I primarily use the first two and usually don't have trouble.
    Give yourself lots of time.
Turn off your screen savers and energy savers; don't let your hard drive go to sleep.
Get your computer healthy and ready for some heavy lifting. (video work could be the hardest job your computer can do) MacJanitor followed by Apple's DiskUtility's Repair Permissions is my routine.
Most of the time iDVD is working, it is encoding (compressing) your video to fit on the DVD. Create an image .img file and use Toast or Disk Utility to burn it to disk. Burn slow (1 or 2x).
I keep my projects under 60 minutes (for highest resolution).
Try testers; you can use DVD-RW
I import into iDVD rather than export from iMovie (fewer errors).
    No other apps open.
If you use iDVD for burning the DVD (and don't make a disk image), don't quit iDVD even when the DVD is burned, until you've played the DVD in a regular player (it's much easier to burn another disk and check to see if the problem was a bad disk, than to go back through all that encoding again by quitting iDVD).

  • Sound problems when burning a film made in iMovie in iDVD

    PLEASE HELP!!!
I have upgraded to iLife 09 and for all the bad that people have to say, I actually like it a lot. Anyway, it gave me the encouragement I needed to play with some old home movies I had stored with the aim of producing DVDs to give to my friends, and hopefully showing off the slick production values I have come up with.
So after spending a week getting to grips with iMovie and editing an old holiday film with all the cuts, transitions, chapter markers and music etc that I wanted, I ended up with an hour long movie that I was happy with.
Then to iDVD. After trying out all sorts of ways to go from iMovie to iDVD to ensure the best quality, I have finally given up trying to replicate the on screen quality of the movie in iMovie with the finished DVD, and just opted for the easy to use 'share to iDVD' option. The quality is not great, but then the footage is old anyway so not too much of an issue.
Then I spend another few days playing with and learning iDVD and again end up with a finished product that I am happy with, with nice looking menu's and a slideshow etc.
So I come to burn the final DVD, for which I pick the 'Professional burn' option which takes 4 hours but I am happy to wait if it means the best quality possible, and my DVD is done.
I then play the DVD to discover my problem - the sound in the movie is not right. To explain further, in my movie I have reduced the sound of some of the film clips to nothing and placed music over the top. When played and previewed in iMovie it works fine - the music plays and the sound that is attached the the video does not. When previewed in iDVD it works fine - just as I had edited it in iMovie. But then when I burn the DVD, some of these sounds are present again which completely wastes all my hard work at the editing stage.
I have searched and searched for help on this but am unable to find any.
Sorry for the very long description and story behind my issue, but it is massively frustrating. Basically, at some point during the 'burn to DVD' stage in iDVD it decides to completely ignore most of the sound edits I have made on the movie in iMovie.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

Further to this, I have just sat and watched the whole final DVD on my TV and it would seem to be that the sound issues may be something to so with the transitions added in iMovie. Some of the sounds have even slipped in time! I get the sound from the next clip coming in early and then a blank patch of sound where it should be. All of this is always just before an iMovie transition.

everytime i try to burn my idvd project it goes through all the process of encoding the video and audio which takes a long time. then when it gets to the burn section it stops and it says error multiplexing and burning.

    am i missing anything.
i tried to burn it in toast but after the encoding an error appears.
is there anything i can do to get my project on dvd
    cheers
    lib

  • Audio Problems when burning

I have tried making disc image, burning disc and the audio will pause for second several times in the play back. It does not do it when playing back in iDVD.
The slide show was started in iPhoto and sent to iDVD. I have started over several times and still same issue. Makes a bad impression and is really not useable for presentation.
I have 30 gigs free space, changed settings to Professional encoding and still same issue. I have no open apps, changed all energy settings and screen saver to never.
Any ideas, I am fresh out, never had this problem with previous version.
    Frustrated

    Andy,
This question is really in the wrong place - this is the iDVD '08 forum and not the iDVD 5 forum.
From the description of your problem using Toast, it sounds like you didn't actually export a DV video movie out of iMovie.
Export a DV video movie out of iMovie (it will run 13 GB per hour) and play it back with the QuickTime Player to see if the audio settings you made are really there. If this movie plays OK, you can bring IT into iDVD or Toast for turning it into a DVD.
If the DV video movie you created STILL has audio problems in the QuickTime Player, ask you question about THAT issue in the correct iMovie forum.

  • IMovie audio problems when burning in Toast 6

    Hi,
i've tried to burn an imovie project in idvd 5 but i get 'the error #-1 was reported' like most people have been and i've tried loads of things suggested to fix it with no joy.
I then sent the imovie project to toast titanium 6 where it burned fine. However, when i watched it i noticed that although toast had picked up all the audio (both dv audio and aiff), it did not pick up all the volume adjustments during the movie. how annoying! for example: i have an aiff clip that fades into a movie clip with the sound gradually going down but Toast picks up the sound staying at the same level. this also happens with volume adjustments in a DV file.
Any suggestions why this happens / how i can fix it?
    Cheers,
    Andy

  • IDVD cuts out audio when burned.

I've created about an hour and half movie in iMovie, added an audio narration track, and rendered it to Garage Band. I added chapters and shared it with iDVD. The layout is great, everything works well. When watching in iDVD, everything, including the audio plays. The disc I'm using has enough space to burn the whole thing, and I don't receive an error message. However, it cuts the last four minutes of audio out every time. The audio is in two different chapters. It hits a certain point in the second to last chapter and cuts it. I created a disc image and have the same problem. I'm on a deadline for work and need some help. Thanks.

    Don,
Slides in iDVD created slideshows are considered to be Chapters and many/most set top DVD players drop the audio on Chapter changes. (Many also pause or quit after every 99th image for the same reason).

  • Audio problem when burning DVD

Hi, Hope that someone can help me, I have already make several DVD's,and those went fine, but the latest Imovie project is with spoken audio.
When I try to burn this with IDVD 5.0.1 everything went well till IDVD has come to the audio part, hereby it goes wrong. I didn't get a failure message but nothing happened further on.
    Hope someone has a solution!

    Hello, prutgers,
You will need to be a bit more specific with your problem so we can help you.
What do you mean by 'it goes wrong'? What exactly happens?
You need to know that when your DVD is encoding audio, the process appears to be doing nothing. If you leave it alone for a while, it just may finish. Maybe you are not waiting long enough.
Especially if you don't get an error message. What are you doing? Did you force quit? Did the DVD burn and has an audio problem?
    Give us more information!

  • IDVD is incredibly slow when burning to DVD

    Hi,
I have just recently upgraded to iLife 06...why is iDVD so incredibly slow. It took nearly 3 hours to burn a 43 minute DVD....I don't understand.
My computer is iMac G5 1.8GHZ PowerPC
    Memory is 1.25 GB
It is so frustrating. Is anyone else having this problem?

I was surprised how long my MacBook has been taking to burn DVDs. It took about 4 hours to burn 2 episodes of Lost with "better quality" — couldn't use "better performance" because it can't even fit 84 minutes of video on a DVD — and I noticed that iDVD came nowhere near using all of my processing power. I've got 2 gigs of ram and a 2 GHz processor, so I would like it if iDVD actually used all of it, when I'm not doing anything else. I saw about 130% CPU usage max (out of 200%). Anyone know how to bump up iDVD's process priority or something to make it use all of the power it can?
Edit: I forgot to mention that the episodes were divx or xvid files to start with, so I'm not sure if that slows it down a lot, since it has to transcode.

  • Colour problems when burning  dvd

Having created 4 slideshows in one project in idvd, I burnt the project to dvd, when viewing the dvd on tv through dvd player, the colours are all wrong, red is blue, blue is brown, yellow is blue. Can anyone help me solve the problem please

Insert it in your Mac and play it with "DVD player" the utility. If it is fine the problem is with the external DVD player perhaps the connecting lead??

  • IDVD video encode error when burning to DVD

I am trying to burn a new copy of a project I successfully burned to DVD 2 years ago.  I have not changed the source material.  After the menu renders and video encoding begins I immediately get an error message "video encoding error."  There are no menu warnings.  All video is successfully previewed.  Nothing has changed from the previous burn.  The project info box shows all video and audio properly encoded and present.
    What gives?

The way from FCE or FCP has been the same for me for lot's of years since FinalCut 1.2.5 I think (was no Express or Pro then)
And QuickTime Conversion never worked for me - I guess You were lucky two years ago.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
Just double click on the Hard Disk icon (top right on DeskTop) and read on bottom part of this windows frame e.g,
    ( in English - 1 of 14 selected, 38.24 GB FREE)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding if material (video + menu) exceeds 40 minutes ! if less I use Best Performances
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1) - BEST IS NOT BEST at all only fastest and results in Maximum amount of BURN ERRORS !
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • Problem when burning to DVD in DDSP

when i burn my project to a DVD it keeps informing me that my bit rate is too high. however reducing the bit rate size it still continues to prompt me with the same message, even when i have set the bit rate at its minimum value. The bit rate controls that i am changing are in the preferences of the whole program (whether these are the wrong settings i am changing), if anyone can help me that would be brilliant or if there is any further information you need from me so this matter can be resolved that would be much appreciated

The search function for the forums has changed but you can still try to locate that term You will probably find the problem is your audio file is consuming all of your available bit budget. The way we used to get aournd that was to convert the audio portion using Compressor to AAC or AC3. I think theoperation is more or less automatic in DVDSP4 but you did not indicate which version you're using. The audio conversion process is explained in the DVDSP manual.

  • Idvd does not sync when burning to dvd

I am using a MacBook Pro with OSX, FCP 7 and iDVD 7 or 8 (it's burning now, so can't confirm).  I have a 64 minute video (that includes motions, etc in iDVD.  I exported the FCP to QT movie using the default settings.  Everything remains in sync in FCP and iDVD.  When I burn to a disc, it goes out of sync about half way through the movie.  I have searched for solutions in the support community but things I have tried do not work.
I have one more question, but I may have to go to FCP community.  I export to QT with default settings.  Is there another way to export that does not compress so much?
    Thank you for your help.

I did notice the "sequence" indicated 32 bit and all the clips, wav music, etc. are 16 bit.  Is that normal?
    May be but I would.
    • Convert all material to formats that FinalCut has easy to use and that match the Final product (Movie)
    • especially the Audio file .wma, wav etc and 32-bit - is no good start
    - convert them to .aiff 16-bit 44.1kHz or 48kHz
    • Set up a NEW Project - BUT FIRST select - right kind of project depending on material - AND FINAL MOVIE PROPERTIES.
THEN FIRST - Start a NEW PROJECT - Else it will not work.
