IDVD 4.0.1 & Anamorhpic Video

Hello again everyone,
My latest project involves 5 short QuickTime Movies edited together in one sequence in Final Cut Express 2.0.3. I am trying to now burn that sequence to DVD but I am having some "issues"...
Three of these QuickTIme Movies are DV PAL Anamorphic and the other two are DV PAL (not anamorphic) and all five have been edited into a DV PAL Anamorphic Sequence in Final Cut Express 2.0.3. This looks great when viewed in the canvas.
What I have been trying to do next is export the whole sequence using File/Export/QuickTime Movie so I end up with one whole exported QuickTime Movie, containing the five other QuickTime Movies, that I can then import into iDVD 4.0.1.
The export works fine and I can import the new QuickTime Movie into a PAL iDVD 4.0.1 project but the footage looks 4:3 and not anamorphic.
When exported the QuickTime Movie does not seem to have preserved the pixel aspect ratio of my sequence (anamorphic)...
Can anyone please offer some advice here? What is the best way to export Anamorphic PAL sequences out of Final Cut Express 2.0.3 as QuickTime Movies that can then be imported into iDVD 4.0.1 (or DVD Studio Pro and other apps) with the correct pixel aspect ratio (Anamorphic PAL)?
Is this something that iDVD can't handle and needs to be done in DVD Studio Pro or do I need to change my export settings in Final Cut Express 2.0.3...OR do I need to export it from Final Cut Pro instead?

I have double checked all of my settings and they are all set to PAL. I have also posted on the Final Cut Forums...after some more reading it looks like iDVD 5 will solve all my problems.

After iLife 6 upgrade, iMove & iDVD doesn't recognize my video camera.

Since upgrading to iLife 6, iMovie and iDVD no longer recognizes my video camera. I have tried plugging, unplugging, turn off, turn on - all the usual procedures and I can't get it working.
Here's the unusual thing; I have Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 and it finds the video camera just fine every time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
My camera is a Sony HDR-HC1

I just tried my camera and wasn't successful at first. After connecting it (I didn't have the firewire connected at first , turning the camera on and off, disconnecting/connecting I noticed a choice (I was able to use the iSight) of input but had the camera listed as incompatible with the project. I had to close the test project I started and start a new one. This time I was more careful about the setting and selected it as a DV project.

I am trying to get a good copy of my home video on DVD using IDVD. On editing the video all the viewing screens show the video perfectly in HD. When I burn the video to DVD all the end results are buzzy with squiggly lines. Any fix? Thanks?

There are several layers to this Q
A. There are no HD in DVD - DVD is as standard only SD-Video what ever tools used to produce it !
iDVD or DVD-Studio Pro or Roxio Toast™ - will only make SD-Video on DVD
B. DVD can be better or worse
• Using "Share to iDVD" is no good way - Better is Share to Media Browser and as Large (NOT HD as result will be worse)
• Using iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - are not tools to chose if highes quality is of importance - iMovie up to HD6 or FinalCut any version is far better as they send over all lines to iDVD and not only every second one.
• Using Right encoder quality depending on movie and Manu duration is very important
• Use of high quality brand of DVD - is important - I use Verbatim DVD-R
• Type of DVD - DVD-R plays on more DVD-Players (even old ones)
• Burn speed - I set it down to x4 - resulting in less burn errors - plays on more players
• I secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up Mac OS hard disk as iDVD and Mac OS needs this and it can not be taked from other hard disks - has to be here.
• What You feed iDVD does matter

IDVD to create an instructional video

Is it possible to use iDVD to make an instructional video rather than a DVD with continuous play. I created instructions in Powerpoint then saved each slide as a jpeg. What I'm wanting to do is bring in each jpeg as it's own frame (not sure this is the right terminology). BUT each slide/frame will be interactive as in, going back, going forward, home, etc. I do NOT want this to play through like a movie. It has to be completely navigated by the user to go to new slides/frames.
Is this possible with iDVD or do I need to look at some other product.

Create the slideshow in iDVD from the individual jpgs of the PP presentation and set the slide timing to "manual". Then you can use the DVD player remote's forward and back buttons to advance the slideshow or go back slide by slide.

How can I make iDVD with a H264(.mp4) video file???

I've got two files which is in .mp4 format, I tried to edited it in iMOVIES but it came up with only audio no video. So then I tried to put that two .mp4 video directly into iDVD, but it also didn't work. There is no problem when I try to view .mp4 file in quicktime player.
So if I have to changed the format to .avi , which software would be best?? I want to keep the quality of the original files but I have heard so many times that after changing the file format, the quality may not be the same as before.
Please, masters, help............

OK, here are the results of my experimenting:
ffmpegX wasn't happy making the conversion and froze. I didn't try 'playing' with it to make it work. I guess I can't recommend this approached for you.
I DID have success creating a DVD from your file using Roxio's Toast Titanium 7 (you must have version 7 to do this).
It was a slow process - your 0:03:46 clip required abount an hour on my 1.33 G4 PowerBook. The process might have been slightly slowed because in addition from going from MPG-4 to MPG-2 (and converting the audio), it was also converting from PAL to NTSC (the source video is 25 fps).
In my opinion, the results looked pretty poor when viewed on a TV. About what I'd expect starting with a small (662x384 pixel), highly compressed MPG-4 image file.
Stick to viewing them on your computer with the VLC Media Player. You'll be a lot happier.

IDVD unexpectedly quits and/or video freezes during burn

Please help! I'm going crazy trying to get a completed video project burned onto DVD. I have three video programs (one is a slide show), all created in Final Cut Pro and saved as either Final Cut Quicktimes or Quicktime movies using H264 compressor. The programs are imported into iDVD 4.0.1 (they cumulatively amount to less than one hour). Two different things are happening. Sometimes, iDVD churns for 16 hours, spits out the DVD, and says it unexpectedly quit. The DVD plays, but the slide show program freezes about 3/4 into (audio continues but video freezes). Other times, iDVD churns for hours and hours, only to quit and spit out a blank DVD.
This has never happened in the past. I've never before had trouble burning DVDs. The only change I recently made was this: I changed the name and password of the administrative account user. Also, this computer was iSync'd with another mac and about a week ago, all my preferences disappeared and programs opened as if for the first time (although nothing on the hard drive was lost).
Here's what I've tried: MacSweeper (although it has authenticaltion problems - I authenticate and then everytime I try to run it, it says it's not authenticated, so I can't tell if it's working), MacJanitor, I've checked all the preference settings and nothing comes up in error. I've also tried the Easter Egg approach and I got the same result (freeze 3/4 through).
Here's what I have: iMac G4, 800 MHz CPU, 1 GB memory, OS X (10.4.2), iDVD 4.0.1.
The slide show program is the only one messing up on the burned discs. Do you think it has anything to do with the new H264 compressor (in the past I've never used that, and the other two programs - which are fine on the DVD - are Final Cut Quicktimes).
Help me please - before I do something violent to this computer!!! Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for your suggestions, David. My remaining issues are these, and anyone with ideas is welcome to chime in here:
First, I've never encountered this problem in the past, even with the same amount of available disc space. It seems like the Tiger upgrade is what's causing the problem, but so far it's been impossible to isolate. Has anyone heard anything about this or found a permanent solution?
On that same note, I understand what you're saying about an external drive. I don't have one, and it seems superfluous that I should need to spend money on one when this process worked fine a year ago. But I guess I'll try it if nothing else works better.
Second, fortunately, I wised up to the Disk Copy solution to make back-up copies of my ONE usable DVD. But I'm extremely concerned that I will encounter this same problem the next time I need to burn from iDVD. I have no idea why this one disc worked and all my other attempts failed. There must be something identifiable going on in all these similar cases, and it doesn't make sense to me that the permanent solution lies in somehow working AROUND iDVD instead of through it. And I guess I won't spend the money to upgrade to iLife '05 if the possibility exists that this problem will persist.
So there are my lingering concerns and frustrations. For now, I'm walking away from this project with exactly ONE useful DVD produced from iDVD out of approximately 20 attempts. Something's wrong with this picture. Ugh!

When Burning a DVD from IDVD it does not encode Video

I am having trouble burning a DVD that will not freeze. All of them come out and are read by DVD players of all kinds, but it gets about 3 minutes into the video, and it freezes. I saved as Image to Disk, and it went through the Burning process flawlessly and played through in its entire contents, but then when I tried to burn it to a DVD, it made the menus fine, but when it came to encoding the video, it skipped that part and went straight to encoding audio and it did not work. It came out with just a little video on there, but it did not use the same process as the Save Disc to Image did. When I saved Disc to Image it played through the whole project in kind of a slow motion. The Burning to a DVD did not do that at all.
Please HELP!

I do not have 20gb free on my start up drive. I will once I delete the bulk of the project. How can I save the project to make sure that when I delete the big project, the parts that I have edited and want to not get deleted?
As for my Imovie, It is a 22 minute long home video that does include 5 chapter markers, including the one that starts the movie from the begining. There is music for every clip from my itunes. The theme i chose is the first one listed on the list. It starts in from the right side, and then scrolls across at the top. All of the menus work fine when i play my burned DVD. In fact, everything works fine except for that one part when it freezes up.
I do not understand what you mean by adding my movie to a drop zone and not to the background. The way i started it on Idvd was by clicking, create an Idvd from the menu on imovie.
I made a new step of progress and i got the encoding of the video, but it still did not work. It froze at 3:03 instead of 3:27, 3:38, or any of the others. This is the second disk i have made though that will play on my Powerbook. It freezes on everything else though.

Besides the DVD requiring 2 days to "burn" the finished DVD freezes about 2/3 through the video. The audio continues, but the video remains frozen on the same image.

One guess is that iDVD ran correctly but a bad spot on the DVD-R causes the pause in playback. My strategy for iDVD is:
1) Shut down/Restart without any applications running.
2) Run Mac Sweeper which you will find on http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Mac-Sweeper.shtml
carrying out all the optimize options including repair permissions and then (I'm not sure it may be done in one of the others as well) under clean, empty caches.
3) Launch iDVD and the project
4) "Burn" a copy to disc to hard disc using the workaround known as Easter Egg or "Hurz and Pfurz" on

iDVD5 has this built in.
5) Go to bed and have a good night's sleep.
6) When the run is finished (always for me 1 hour in less than 8 hours) examine the DVD image and play it using the DVD player in the applications folder

but you just use the second half to burn the DVD. This means you can readily produce multiple copies. I have taken to burning the DVD without any other applications running as I think this causes bad spots on the disc.
Remember when burning the DVD you are writing over 32,000,000,000 individual bits and you cannot afford too many ambiguous spots.

IMovie 11 to iDVD results in pixelation, poor video quality in parts

I recently created a wedding video in iMovie 11 a burned it to DVD. Video looks like it should except for the "interview" portions where it's extremely pixelated. The audio is fine. These interviews have very little movement and are actually much better lit compared to the rest of the wedding video.
I also created some trailers and used the same clips and ended up with a great result, no pixelated look. The clips are 2 mins long whereas the wedding video is 100 mins long.
I've tried creating the iDVD project with different size medias and end up with the same result.
Original video is coming off of mini-DV. I'm wondering if some of the freeware deinterlace programs I've been reading about would make a difference like JES deinterlacer or Streamclip. I haven't downloaded either yet.
Or is there a better program to burn DVD's with that will work with iMovie. I don't want to discard the whole project which took months.
I'm very frustrated and any help would be greatly appreciated.

As I see it - Neither iDVD, DVD-Studio Pro or Roxio Toast™ can do anything better than what
iMovie'11 delivers. And it and iM'08 and iM'09 discard every second line in that process
so resolution is lost.
I've not seen any cure that restore this. Many has been suggested - But on TV the result
is not encuraging.
Only medicine I find - is to use a program that delivers 100% to iDVD as
• iMovie up to HD6
• FinalCut any version

IDVD doesn't process AVCHD video and high definition RAW photo files

Hi everybody. I have a brand new Canon VIXIA HF S10 and 5D Mark II. I tried to make a movie out of video shot with the camcorder using iMovie and then I burned a DVD with iDVD. I also made a slide show out of RAW photos made by the 5D. And I encountered such a situation when the movies I made seem to be missing some frames. For instance people move discretely instead of smoothly as in the original video. As for the photos they come out not to be of high definition and don't fit to the whole TV screen. I mean if I burn the photos to a DVD in Jpeg they look perfect. I set all the setting to HD but still get poor quality.
Have anybody dealt with the same situation or I should try more professional soft like Cut pro or DVD pro?

IDVD can't process AVCHD. I use Toast to do that. Import your pictures or slides into IMovie and export them via Quicktime if you want 1920x1080 or via browser if you want 720P. Than you can us the browser in Toast to create a DVD in AVCHD. It will play in a blu ray player but NOT in Mac OSX. You will need to use Native Windows via Boot Camp and a Blu Ray player in your mac if you have one. Otherwise a Blu Ray player in you TV system should work.

IDVD 6 - Audio Disappears from video at 49:55 time!?

I hope you can help me out!
I've been working on a DVD that is just over 55 minutes in length.
The single video file is a DV-NTSC QuickTime Movie with chapter markers, as exported from Final Cut Pro 6. I know FCP inside and out, as well as QT, but the iDVD situation is puzzling.
So, all audio plays fine in the FCP timeline, QuickTime movie with chapter markers, and iDVD menu editing area.
The audio abruptly quits at the 49:55 minute mark when a DVD is compressed and burned with iDVD 6. The same happens when I make a Disc Image and play the image with DVD Player-- the audio stops at exactly the same time.
All other iDVD projects work fine!
What are your thoughts on this?

Interesting. What is happening at 49:55 in your video? At 55 minutes, you're pretty close to a full disk at max quality -- are your preferences set for Best Quality (1hr+ productions) or Best Performance (<60 min, but depends some on how many menus, menu music, DVD-ROM, etc.). You might try best quality to see if that makes a difference.

IDVD after burning has no video (sound is ok...)

Here is what I am doing:
After editing a short test video using iMovie '11 (v9.0.7), I proceed to "share" it with iDVD (v7.1.2). Next using iDVD I select my menu theme and add my video content, then proceed to burn it to a DVD-R (Sony media). When I test my project using iDVD it seems to work perfectly. After the burn process is complete, I eject the DVD.
Problem:
After the burn proecess is complete; I re-insert the DVD to view my results. It only plays the sound. No video!
Notes:
- I have also tried to "share" the content by using "Export using Quicktime...". This gives me the same result when I used this file in iDVD. No video!
- I have taken the Quicktime (.mov) file and imported and burned it using Toast 11, and it seems to work fine. This is not as elegent, and the themes are not as cool; but it does work.
Please let me know what I am doing wrong here. Must be something I am missing... Is this a bug? BTW, I am using a iMAC/i7, running OSX 10.8.

There can be many things that can create this - what differs from me are
• I NEVER use "Share to iDVD" in any iMovie versions from 1 - HD6 or 08 -11
- I do - "Share to Media Browser" and as LARGE (Not HD or other resolution)
• I set down burn speed to x2 or x4
• I only use Verbatim DVD-R (many cheap brands do not work as Video-DVDs)
• I use iMovie'11 (9.0.4) and Mac OS X.6.8 - there seems to be a lot of problems when up-grading and there are plug-ins to QuickTime (I guess) that needs to be removed as 3ivxVideoCodec.component and Perian to make it work.
• I never let Start-Up Hard Disk go less than 25Gb free space
• THEN an Important factor is - material feed into iDVD (or iMovie as it's where problems starts)
- Video Codec used
- Photo file format
- Audio file format
all of them can work - or give severe problems - You must tell
BUT IMPORTANT IS : to split process into two stages
• encoding part (by Save as a DiskImage in iDVD)
• burn process - by use of Disk Util tool and burn the above created .img file

Idvd 6 burned a dvd = video, but no audio

(IDVD 6.0.3) I make my menus and preview the project in IDVD6 and it all works. I burn the dvd the 1st time and the audio skips. I tried deleting the encoded assets and then burning. Now there is no sound, but the video works. I've tried using different media DVD-r discs= TDK, Ritek,Verbatim. I've repaired disk permissions, trashed prefs files for both FCP, and IDVD6 no go. I've also created a disc image as some have suggested. However, when I preview the disc image in DVD Player there is only video and no audio. I am really deseperate! I've working at this for almost 2 weeks. Please help if you can. Leon

Okay. I tried converting to Quicktime and I have sound now in IDVD6, but the chapter markers didn't import with the movie. Is there a way to make scene selections or chapter markers in IDVD6? TIA Leon

IDVD behaving strangely with HDV video from FCP X and FCP 7?

AVCHD exported from FCP X as ProRes 422 works perfectly in iDVD producing a 16:9 DVD.
HDV doesn't, even though QT Player plays it perfectly.
The odd thing is that 4 years ago, using legacy FCP my exported HDV videos had no problems being recognised as 16:9 by iDVD.
So why are FCP X produced HDV videos not recognised as 16:9?
P.S. I know that iDVD never recognised DV in the 16:9 format but it always worked with HDV.
Incidentally, the old trick of opening it in QT Pro and changing the frame size to 1024 x 576 does not work!
Even stranger, I have just opened the HDV clips in FCP 7 and exported them as a QuickTime Movie.
iDVD plays them back in the correct aspect ratio but look at the effect . . . . muted colours and green patterns all over.
This never happened in the past!

I mentioned several problems so I don't know which one you are referring to.
After experimenting I found some workarounds.
To cure the squashed image I created a ProRes 422 preset in Compressor 4 with a frame size of 1920 x 1080 and exported from FCP X using Compressor Presets.
Everything now works perfectly except the encoding seems to take longer.
I got rid of the moire pattern when using FCP 7 by exporting as ProRes 422 1920 x 1080.

Idvd stalls while encoding either video or audio

I am using version 6.0.3 of idvd. Once the video has been imported from my digital video cam and idvd begins the process encoding the video and then the audio, idvd often stalls and stops responding, which requires me to force quit idvd losing all the data imported. This issue is very frustrating since it takes more than an hour to import the video content only to lose it all with a moments stall. I had this same problem with version 5 and I had hoped that version 6 would correct the issue, but to no avail.
Also, I am unable to import video from iPhoto saved a .mov file into idvd in order to burn the video onto a disk.

Sounds like you are using OneStep - I'd go back and use iMovie to import, and then iDVD to burn - that way you won't lose the video import.
The most common issues that can cause your problems are:
1) not having 16 bit audio - this document is for iDVD5, but applies to iDVD6

2) Not having enough free space - make sure you have 20GB free plus 2GB for every ten minutes of video you want to import. Yes this is a lot, and more than Apple says you need, but personal experience tells me it is important.
As for the iPhoto .mov issue, I agree it should work (and I have done it). Exactly how are you trying to import the .mov file?
