IDVD 4.1 burning to an external DVD-R/RW drive

I have a G4 dual 500 with iDVD 4.1 (5 & 6 require 733 MHz or higher). I just bought an external DVD-R/RW drive and I want to use it with iDVD. I downloaded Patchburn to assist iDVD in seeing the drive. Every time I click Burn, iDVD crashes.
All of my media is on an external drive (Lacie d2 Firewire). Has anyone had any success with this or do I have to upgrade my processor?

I'm not sure patchburn works with OS 10.4.x - when iDVD 4 was released, the OS was at 10.2.8
I suspect you need to update to the iLife '06 applications to get your external drive to work. However, iDVD says it requires at least a 733Mhz G4 or later processor.
Have you tried to see if patchburn will allow you to write a disk image file out of iDVD? If it does that, you can use Apple's DIsk Utility to burn the image to writable media.

  • IDVD is not burning my iMovie to DVD

I start the burn process - I get all the way to "multiplexing and burning" and between 1 and 3 minutes left, it spits out the DVD and then the rotating wheel of horror just rotates until I hit cancel leaving nothing on the DVD.  I know there have been previous posts about this issue.  I have tried to read them all and do as was instructed by Klaus1 & Bengt (you two seem to know the fixes!) - but nothing seems to be working.
Are there any other ideas out there of what I can do to get this iMovie onto a DVD??
    Working on a 24.5" iMac - OS X 10.6.8
My iMovie is version 8.0.6 (821)
My iDVD is version 7.1.2 (1158)
My movie is 33 minutes long
    I am burning to a Verbatim DVD-R with 4.7GB
    Project Settings are:
    Video Mode - NTSC
    Encoding - Best Performance
    Aspect Ratio - Widescreen 16:9
DVD Type - Single Layer (SL) 4.2 GB
Here is what I've tried so far:
    * I checked the TV safe area - I'm all good there.
    * I don't have chapters in my DVD - so there aren't characters to change or titles to add
    * All the videos within my iMovie were taken on an iphone so no strange material
    * The name of my video project does not have numbers or symbols in it
    * I have done a safe reboot of my computer
    * I created a Disk Image file and saved it to my desktop - no issues saving it there - works great.  Tried to burn from the Disk Image file to the DVD - got the same issue with the "multiplexing and burning" spit out at 1 minute to go.
    * I tried burning at a slow speed - doesn't change anything.
    * I unplugged all external hard drives or anything else plugged into my computer (chargers, etc.) and tried again.  Nada.
    * I downloaded the program BURN and tried to use that instead of iDVD.  I cancelled the progress after it got to only 65% done in 46 hours.
    * I have plenty of free space on my hard drive
    * I tried an SMC reset - shutting down / unplugging
    * I have tried to burn the DVD with all other programs & applications closed during the process.  Doesn't matter.
Have I stumped you?  Because I feel defeated.  Please HELP!

    Hi
If You got a working DiskImage. (that plays well with DVD-player tool)
And still don't get an OK DVD via Disk Util tool - then either
    • DVD burner are faulty - or -
    • Dirty
I use a cleaning DVD (with brushes - NO LIQUID) from time to time.
By burning more than three DVDs in a row one can easily overheat the DVD-laser = Expensive Repair
I let my DVD-burner cool down for 20-30 minutes after each 3 DVD set's

  • Idvd 3.0 won't find external dvd drive

I am having difficulty with idvd not finding external dvd/rw drive. It came with software, but I need it to burn through idvd. Please advise, thanks!

Unfortunately iDVD versions 4 and previous only work with the internal superdrive and will not see external drives. There is a patch to make iDVD work with an external drive, but I think it only works with iDVD4.

  • Burning discs through external DVD burner

I've bought an external DVD burner as PE 10 did not recognise the inbuilt one in windows 8.1.
It does not recognise the new burner either.
How can I tell it where to burn the disc as the "burner location" box is not accessible.
I've tried burning to folder instead and this is fine for playing discs on a computer but they will not play back on a TV through a DVD player in spite of choosing this option when burning discs.
    I hope I haven't wasted my money!

  • Idvd6 to burn on an external dvd burner

I am running Osx 10.3.9 and have idvd4. Unfortunatly i have an external dvd burner and idvd4 will not burn to this. Will idvd6 work on my system as Ive heard this works with an external burner.

    Hi chadredford:
Yes-iMovie 6 would allow you to natively export to an external burner. Would your system work? Better read these to help make up your mind:

  • External dvd/cd firewire drive disappears

I have a OWC Mercury Pro Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Pioneer DVR-218L External DVD/CD Writer. I have it connected by the firewire 800 port. problem is that it will disappear from the desktop intermittently, i only turn it on when i need to use it and sometimes it never mounts the disc. the only way to bring it back is shut down the drive and computer, unplug the firewire cable from the drive and the power cable from the computer. start up the computer and when it is up i can plug the firewire cable back into the computer and start the drive and presto its back and working. also i can not burn music cds with itunes. i will put in a blank cd and it will mount, itunes will go through the whole burn process and then give the error of "the attempt to burn failed. the device is not accessible, probably because it was removed" it is now gone from the desktop at this point and will not open the tray until i shut it down and power it up, and wont mount on the desk top until i do the unplug procedure. any suggestions?!? Thanks Chris

    Hi Chris
Could just be a bad FireWire cable, but it's hard to tell exactly without more testing.
    1. Check the drives power supply connections and try another FireWire cable.
    2. Still having trouble, test the drive connected to another iMac with FireWire 800.
+(ask your Local Apple Store if you can test it with one of there iMacs)+
    3. If it has USB, test it connected up to the iMac USB.

  • PC External DVD/CD-RW Drive To Air

I have always owned PC's, and buy at least 1 new desktop or laptop per year, having to upgrade by choice or need for 3 people. In the last couple of years I have become interested in Macs, because of the good things I have heard, but was put off by the price difference.
So having decided to make my next laptop a Mac, and a possibility the Air, I have questions regarding external devices in general, and external USB DVD drive in particular. I bought an external USB DVD/CD-RW drive for a new netbook a week ago, and I may buy a Mac in the next month or so. Can I use the USB DVD drive I bought on a Mac Air, or any Mac for that matter?
And, can I use my other PC externals (printer, mice, drives, cameras, etc) with any Mac? Going even Further, are any internals like memory or HDD's, WI Fi, compatible?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Most of questions are YES!
HDD are the same but you need to get the right size to fit on laptop hight wise.
All mac's now have WiFi (bar some macpro can be ordered without, i think).
Memory is the same but must be to mac spec for the model, crucial.com I always use.
USB DVD drive will work but it may not not be able to boot macbook air if you need to reinstall OS from 10.5/10.6 DVD's etc. They all should but sometimes they just don't, i found. Fine for DVD burning. note to get most out of any drive Toast is a must buy!

  • Re burning a cd or dvd on optical drive

trying to backup photos and files . have tried a cd-rw and a dvd-rw. the drive erased the contents fine but then will not show the blank disc. when try to burn a pop up says: you will need a disc with X amount of free space
when try to open disc in finder a window pops up with:
the disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported.
have used this drive to burn copies just a week ago on the same medium
    any advice would be helpful
    thanks
    macbook

    In theory all the below:
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
should be working fine, however i have come across threads where people had similar problems.

Just try another make of disc and see whether that helps.

  • Non Apple external DVD R/W drive (USB)

Is there any way I can get a Toshiba (TS-L632) DVD R/W external usb drive to work under OS 10.4? I've tried PatchBurn, but the drive isn't seen so that's no good. The drive does work (I've tested it on a PC).

    Hi,
I think Patchburn was your best bet.
Depending what you want it for, VLC may work to Play Movies, Toast Titanium or Dragon Burn should work for Burning.

  • Backing Up To An External DVD Drive. Any Suggestions?

I have a question please? How do I change settings in iTunes to backup to an external "DVD" drive instead of an internal "Cd" drive? Everytime I try to back things up in iTunes, the only option I see is to backup to Cd. I rarely backup anything to Cd, I use my external DVD burner which in my opinion works so much better, not to mention, would naturally use far less discs. I am clueless where I can change the settings for iTunes to recognize that I don't want to use Cds or my internal Cd burner, but my external DVD burner. I've posted this message on another board about 3 days ago, and haven't seen a response as of yet. Maybe I had asked on the wrong board? If so, I apologize. I truly hope one of you knowledgable souls out there can lend a hand to a new iPod owner.
((Thanks)) ever-so-much for any help/tips anyone can send my way.
    Compaq Presario   Windows XP

You should be able to dump the contents of the external disk as Data with many backup software out there. I use Sonic DigitalMedia. If the media is in your itunes library you can to burn it to DVD as data only.
go to itunes -->advanced--burning--set as data DVD.
This I don't think would degrade the quality of the sound as you are putting the info as data with original format.

  • Mini vs. external DVD drive (or hard drive)

    Hi!
I have a Powerbook G4, was planning to buy an external DVD burner (like a new LaCie with FW400), but now I'm considering getting a Mini instead if I could understand how two Macs can work together, to see if I can somehow have a smarter device for media burning and controlling hardware RAIDs (for storage, not performance). Can one use the Mini as a device for off-loading processing and media burning tasks that one doesn't want taking up time on their main Mac?
    So here are my questions...
    1) When connecting a Mini to a PB, is FW400 the best way to do it? I gather it is from one other posting I've found.
    2) If I connect a Mini to my PB via FW400, can I use Remote Desktop from my PB to control the Mini (analagous to PC Anywhere for PCs)???
    3) If I connect a Mini to my PB via FW400, can I somehow mount the Mini's internal DVD drive on my PowerBook, where the Mini acts as basically an external DVD drive for my PB? Can I do the same with any external hard drives attached to the Mini (see those external hard drives mounted on my PB)? If I do things like that, may I see performance decreases compared to just using external DVD or hard drives?
Any insight or links for related Mini discussions or web sites would be greatly appreciated!!!

Could be SL cannot be installed on your model computer, whatever it is.
Could be the external drive doesn't support Mac OS startup. (Maxtor)
Startup your Mac normally, and then insert your upgrade disk into the external drive and see what happens.

  • External DVD Drive Boot?

I'm wanting to reinstall my OS, but my internal SuperDrive gave out on me (again). Is it possible to boot from an external DVD burner?
The external DVD burner is a HP LightScribe that connects through USB 2.0.

You might be able to boot a Mac OS X installation CD or DVD from an external USB drive; some people have been able to do this with a Tiger DVD on a clamshell iBook.

  • HP Pavilion HDX9000 Connect to External DVD Player

Our older HP Pavilion HDX9000 DVD died and we wanted to use an external DVD player to drive the monitor on the HDX9000.   It does not seem possible to do this despite the HDMI and many other ports.  The PC is running Vista.   Any suggestions?

    Hi,
What is your external DVD player ? There are many USB DVD players for under $50 and you can use it as internal DVD player. You can't use DVD player from your home Hi Fi system because no available port on your computer to plug it in.

  • LaCie External DVD R/RW - can it play regular video dvds on my iBook?

So I've got this LaCie external DVD R/RW drive (designed by Porshe - but who cares?) and I can wiret and re-write dvds of data okay. I use it for backing up my files sometimes, and just extra storage space... But I don't seem to be able to watch a regular DVD movie on my iBook using this external drive (and the disc drive in the iBook is just a CD-ROM that's it.)
So, I'm just wondering if the Apple iBook G3 is even capable of playing a regular DVD video? I have this suspicion that this iBook's Graphics hardware just might not be up to the DVD movie playing requirements?
Is that my problem? Or is there something I can do? Thanks in advance.

Nevermind I just got VLC and that seems to play the DVD alright.
I've had this drive for a little over a year now, and I had basically writen off my iBooks ability to play DVDs because "DVD Player" the application that comes with the O/S said it wasn't possible, well, VLC proved DVD Player wrong.

  • Do any external DVD drives work for boot purposes?

I'm having problems booting my x100e from DVD to reinstall the OS.
I've tried a LG external DVD and a Liteon DVD however neither work.
Occiasionally I can get the BIOS to show the attached device (most of the time it just says USB-CD) however when I come to boot from it it just gets ignored.
The PC is still under warranty so I phoned support and they've suggested I need to try a Lenovo external DVD.
Does anyone have any experience of problems or any drives which do work? Even better is there a solution?
    Thanks,
    Jeddy

    Hello,
As I understand it, the specification for USB 2.0 is for ports to provide +5VDC at 500 milliAmperes for powering attached devices (I believe the specification was adjusted to 900 mA recently).
Some USB devices, such as external hard disk drives and DVD±RW drives, require more than this, and ship with a double-headed "Y" cable that plugs into two USB ports on the computer in order to supply power (like this one), or a separate USB to +5VDC miniplug cable to accomplish the same thing.
From the description, it sounds like a regular USB cable was used to connect the external DVD±RW disc drive to one of the USB ports providing only 500mA, and this did not provide enough current.  Perhaps, the always-on USB port with the yellow connector provides more milliAmperes, which is why the drive worked when plugged in using that cable.
I have had no trouble booting my X100e from external USB DVD±RW disc drives manufactured by LG, Samsung or Velocity Micro when using the appropriate "Y" cable or a regular USB cable in conjunction with a secondary power-only USB cable.
Here are four manuals I found which apply to the ThinkPad X100e:
Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad X100e
Safety and Warranty Guide - ThinkPad General
Service and Troubleshooting Guide - ThinkPad X100e
    Setup Guide - ThinkPad X100e
There are some additional regulatory notices (FCC, UL, CE and other organizations) available on Lenovo's support web site as well, if you are interested in those.
Videos showing how to replace parts can be found here on Lenovo's Service Training web site.
