IDVD 4 says iMovie is too big

I am taking my VHS home movies and converting them to DVD via iMovie and iDVD. I have been putting four tapes (they are short) on one DVD. The longest total amout of time for any four tapes combined is about 90 minutes. I've done about six so far all exactly the same way. Now all of a sudden, when I've put five chapters (from iMovie) instead of four I get a message that I've exceeded the maximum for the DVD. That is not true, it is only 87 minutes. I have changed the preferences to NOT limit me to 60 minutes (whichever one that is) and I still get the same messaage. I have taken my project down to two chapters totalling about 25 minutes and I still get the same message: that it is too much. I've tossed the .plist for both iMovie and iDVD. Done a restart. Still it persists. It will not burn a DVD of any size because it thinks (falsely) that it is too big. Can anyone help? I need the chapters, by the way, so exporting it as one QT movie is out. I could export it as five QT movies and then assemble it in iDVD, but that is too much trouble. It was working so well. I'm using iDVD 4.01 and iMovie 4. Thanks in advance.

No, I didn't want to "spank" anyone. I received the same response from different posts. Everyone wanted me to check the preferences, etc. I suppose it is a fairly common problem that has a very common fix. My problem was different. I appreciate the help.
In the end, I suppose I should get the "spanking". I assumed that iDVD would only burn the chapters I selected. To make a long story short, I had five movies in iMovie, but I only placed three of them into iDVD as chapters. I forgot that iDVD would not make a distinction. It would always try to cram the entire movie onto a DVD.
My bad. It works fine now! By the way, I use a device made by Formac. Go to:

They sell it in North America, too, although it is a UK link.
Thanks,

  • When exporting a 16:9 project using Qk Conversion, it says file is too big?

I just bought FCE HD, but I have been using regular express since early 2004. I want to send my 16:9 widescreen standard def. video from FCE HD to iMovie HD. The only way for iMovie to accept a widescreen video without pillarboxing it is through a DV stream file. I have done this numerous times with the older version without a problem, but now when I export my hour long video, in the middle of exporting using quicktime conversion, it says to file is too big. I have over 100 GB left of harddrive space, so why does it says it's too big? I have used the new Title program that came with the HD upgrade which offers HD text. On my DV-Widescreen NTSC project, I used HD text graphics and rendered them and they played fine, but when I try to export the text with the video, it fails. Could the HD graphics be the culprit, or is it something else entirely?

Yes. When I am trying to export the entire hour-long project using quicktime conversion, it says: error- file is too big, right in the middle of exporting. I am working off an external harddrive using firewire, this is so I have plenty of space for my videos. When I make my titles with the new title program that came with FCE HD, I switch the format of the text format, under project preferences, to HDTV 1080i 16:9. I do this not because my project is HD, WHICH MY PROJECT IS NOT HD, but because it offers a widescreen ratio for my titles. I can use the entire frame for my graphics and titles, etc. I save each and every file into a folder and load them into final cut when I am in final cut. It just has to render them as I go. I DO NOT save each file as a movie. When exporting, I export under quicktime conversion- DV Stream- DV, 16:9 interlaced, and I don't mess with the audio setting. The WHOLE point of this is for iMovie to read my file as 16:9 so it won't pillarbox it. IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A BETTER WAY FOR iMOVIE TO READ FINAL CUT HD FILES "16:9", PLEASE LET ME KNOW; if not, then what should I do about this exporting error?

How do I get videos that I recorded off of my iPhone so I can upload them to Facebook? I cannot send them via email nor MMS because it says they're too big.

iTunes is not used to move photos and videos from an iPhone to a computer (it is used to move them the other direction).
Also note that a connected phone or camera does not show in the Finder on a Mac. It should show in Image Capture or iPhoto.
The following has instructions on how to move them: iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
Another option is 3rd party software such as http://www.photosync-app.com

  • IMovie still too big

I thought I had solved my problem by splitting the movie in part 1 and part 2.
I took the first part (after I cleared the rest of the movie) and tried to SHARE it with iDVD,
But I still get the message that it is too long for a DVD.
This first part is now only 1 hr 10 minutes.
Can anyone give me more help, please.

Project info choices are: Best Perf, High quality, Prof. qual. I picked Best Performance,
Part 1 of my iMovie is 83 minutes and 4.59GB
    Using iMovie HD 6.0.3
When I use SHARE I am still informed that project is too big when I attempt to burn it.
When I close iMovie and go thru iDVD and try to bring it in then my iMovie is greyed out
My iMovie has an icon with the black star inside - that is what I'm to use, right?
I must be doing something wrong! Any more ideas?
Thanks for all your help so far.
Got to get this movie off my HD - it's taking up too much room! Only have 25GB open, could that be related to my problem?

  • Why does is say purchaseable items too big for download every time I try to download an app?

Every time I try to download a game or app my iPhone says error message purchasable items too big for download. I even changed my billon information. Anyone know what the problem might be?

Connect your iPad to iTunes on your Mac/PC and then go to your iPad's summary window. Then click back up if you want to back up your iPad first. After that click restore. Later it will ask you if you want to setup the iPad as a new iPad. Select the option to setup your iPad with your latest back up.

  • Why can't we upload photo to profile page it is only 6.8 mb and error says it is too big

why can't we upload photo to profile page it is only 6.8 mb and error says it is too big

Yeah, about that... Apple stopped signing iOS 5.1.1.  Because Apple is no longer issuing it. Apple only issues the most current software for a given device.  See http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iOS6.pdf  It states:
"Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive
license to download iOS Software Updates that may be made available by Apple for your model
of the iOS Device to update or restore the software on any such iOS Device that you own or
    control."
So per the Software License Agreement you HAD TO ACKNOWLEDGE to upgrade to iOS 6 you agreed to use iOS 6 in accordance with that agreement and it doesn't give you permission to downgrade your version of iOS.

  • IMovie file too big?

hey guys! thanks for the GREAT help on converting a mpeg file for iMovie use. anyways new question now.
i just looked at the iMovie file im creating now and its 7 something gigabytes!! is that actually how big the converted quicktime movie will turn out to be? or will it be smaller once ive converted it? im just freaking out a little, because i want to distribute this to a few people and if it gets any bigger, itll be stuck in my computer useless! (sorry once again if this is a dumb question, this is my first imovie! how fun!)
    thanks,
    chris

no dumb question, just dumb answers...
iMovie uses a (mostly) lossless video compressor, called "dv" - same as on miniDV tapes... 1h video = ~13GB of data...
that huge files are needed, because you want in an edit app all 30/25 frames per second to edit, and b) you want the whole beauty of your shots...
    but…
    that is for edit.
when you playout to tape, the file size stays the same, a miniDV tape has 13GB/h storage...
using iDVD, which is an authoring, encoding and burning app, your huge file gets converted, from dv to mp2 - which is a delivery format (no single frames needed..), looks good, not editable... much smaller: 1h = ~2GB... besides: iDVD cares for length (<120min) of project, not size! an average 2h iM project contains at last 20 - 30GB => will fit on a 4.4Gb DVD!
when you want to use your video in the web, you have many options/other compressors to choose from... click share/Quicktime/expert options... at this point, you get lost as a beginner... anyhow..
you can reduce the resolution (e.g. 160x120), the framerate (e.g.15fps) and for sure the compressor (mp4/sorenson/h264) - and pronto, your file shrunks to some dozend MBs...

  • IDVD says project is too long

I have just edited some home video and the finished project in iMovie is 1hour and 15 minutes. I am trying to burn this onto a DVD and get a message that the project is too long and I should insert double layer media.
I thought you could burn up to 2 hours onto a single layer DVD. What am I doing wrong?
    I am using iLife 05 on a G5 iMac running 10.4.6.
    Thanks.
    David

Go to preferences and change the setting from Best Performance to Best Quality.
B.Performance is limited to 60 minutes while
B.Quality is limited to 120 minute
    (on single layer media)

  • Idvd message : project is too big to burn on a single dvd

    hi guys,
i was just wondering why idvd limits my dvd capacity according to the length of the movies instead of their size. in other words, im trying to put a collection of 5 movies of one of my favorite directors, of 700mb of size each, but unsuccessfully. it says that the project doesnt fit in a single dvd
any idea why this is happening? and is there a way to change that?
    thanks again

DVDs have to be in a standard format and use a standard video format in order for a standalone DVD player to understand them. That video standard is mpeg-2, and using iDVD's compression algorithms, either 60 or 120 minutes can fit on a DVD. Your files are probably more compressed and thus have to be transcoded into the correct format for a standard DVD.
Using standard DVDs, some options are Roxio Toast (which has a different mpeg-2 compression algorithm) or double-layer DVDs (which can hold up to 4 hrs of video).
If the videos will only be played on computers, you can leave them in the current format and burn a data DVD. You'll have the 4+ gig limit for a single layer DVD, and the files will play on any computer that can handle that video format (no menus involved; it's just a data file).

  • IMovie HD file too big?

I have created my first video. It's only 3:25 minutes. The only graphics are the beginning and end title slides. I was able to send it out as an email to family. Though the way it played looked terrible. Now I want to put it on my iWeb page, but when I drag it there it says it is too big and will cause slow download times. Is there something else I should do to the movie in iMovie to make it playable? I have told it I want to compress it and exported it from iMovie to iWeb. I just feel like I ought to get a 3 minute movie on a web site. I must be missing a step.
I hope someone can help me!
    thanks

That size from iMovie is the space saving import that is not a standard dimension, nor is HD 4:3 aspect ratio, it is 16:9.
This means, as Tom already indicates, that changes are required for FCE use.
If you already know the 28 mins you require why not capture that directly into FCE using the appropriate Apple Intermediate Codec if it's possible?

  • I started to download a free app but it's too big to load without connecting to wifi. I want to delete it. Can anyone tell me how to do it please?

I tried to download a free app. It came up with an error message saying it was too big to download and that I need to connect to WiFi. The icon is still displayed and I can't delete it (I've decided I don't want it. Can anyone tell me how to delete it - there's no x displayed on the icon. Thanks

    Hi stripers
You will either a) need to connect to WiFi and complete the download or b) dock your iPad and remove it from the apps list once synced (your iTunes will more then likely want to complete the download first also, which you may be able to cancel in the downloads section).

  • HDV preset disappear, always crash, file too big

I have several problem with premiere cs4 on my Mac Os x 10.5.8.
before unistall cs4 I'm trying to resolve the problems because I have a important project not exported yet and that I can't open anymore.
after found some plug in that make premiere crashing everytime and deleted them, now it opens but can't support anymore any file inside my project saying they're too big size! ( until last week it was working perfectly!)
now I just saw thet I don't have anymore the HDV preset , what's going on ?
shall I unistall it and start again?!
How can I open my project again with out lost anything??
    many thanks

You can try removing the preferences and see if that helps you.  user>documents>Adobe>Premiere Pro.  Take the 4.0 folder to your desktop and start Premiere Pro.  If that doesn't work, I would probably uninstall and reinstall just to be sure.
To uninstall on Mac go to the utilities folder and look at the ADobe Installers folder.  There you should be able to uninstall (yes, you even have to do it on a Mac!)
    Hope this helps,

  • I am having trouble with a video.  I have tried to copy it to a flash drive because it is too big to fit on a DVD, it says it is too large for the volumes format.  Please advise.

I have done many DVD's for seniors for graduation so I am familier with Imovie.  I have just finished a projec that is a combination of video, music and stills.  I shared it through idvd.  Now I can't burn it to a dvd because it is too large.  It is too big even for a two sided disk.  I have researched it and i find that blue ray would be big enough.  Does apple offer  blue ray burner?  if so, what is the cost?  I tried another route and took my external hard drive to copy it to a PC.  there computer wouldn't recongize my drive.  I am assuming it is because it is formated for apple.  I tired copying it to a flash drive and and it says that it can't be copied because it is too large for the volume's format.  Suggestions?   PLEASE!!!!!

Could the video be too big because of using too high a resolution?   480p is sufficient for a DVD.  the thread at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5868958?tstart=30
    may be of help.
Apple does not support Blue ray - you have to use a thrid party application like Toast.
To transfer the video to a PC you need a FAT-formatted hard drive (or of course a sufficiently big memory stick).
You could also go via a network, via the cloud (eg Dropbox) or with 'Wetransfer" or similar.
    Geoff.

  • Disk Image too big in iDVD 6.0.1

I created a 1 hour 27 minute movie in iMovie 6.0.1 and dragged it into a new iDVD 6.0.1 project. Used Travel widescreen theme and the default audio clip for that main menu. Removed the audio clips from the chapter menus. Created a disk image: 4.29GB, which seems big for an hour and a half movie...
Then I noticed a typo. So I deleted the movie from iDVD and dragged my modified iMovie in. Rebuilt the iDVD menus. This time I added a 3 minute AIFF piece of music instead of the default on the main menu. Created a disk image: 4.41GB. Toast Titanium 7.0.2 wouldn't let me burn the disk image to DVD-R unless I used their built-in compression feature; which I did. Looks virtually the same as my original DVD.
I looked at the sizes of VOBs in both images. The main menu VOB (use MPEG Streamclip to find it) was 524.3MB in the disk image that would fit on a SL DVD-R. The one that didn't fit was 914MB. I have to assume that's because of the length of the music on that main menu.
I then edited my 3 minute music to 30 seconds and used that clip. Deleted encoded assets, and re-encoded. That disk image is 4.26GB and squeaks on a SL DVD-R without using Toast compression.
With a movie running only 1 hour and 27 minutes, this "too big" should NOT be an issue.
I did post this here too: http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
    G4 DP 1.25 GHz 2GB RAM 4 Drives 770GB Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2 SuperDrives (SL 8X & DL 16X)

The problem seems to be the same as in
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=450944&tstart=120
I also submitted the problem to Apple.
AplleCare did not provide a solution.
I think I have some leads on how to fix it, but no clear solution yet.

I have a few wedding projects(1-2 hours)I am trying to export at full hd quality, than burn in idvd. After rendering for 8hrs I receive error code that states "file is too big". Please help? compressing tips without losing quality? or any other exporting alternatives?

    Hey Z,
Thank you for the tip on exporting by media browser (large) from imovie. But of course, if it's not one thing it's another. Now that I figured how to export a large file from imovie, I have an idvd issue. I followed the instructions for burning from idvd and changing the encoding to professional quality and the burn speed to x4, but I am receiving an error that states the following,
Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn your DVD, change the encoder setting in the Project Info window.
    Project:
    - total project duration: 79:04 minutes
    - total project capacity: 4.327 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)
    Menus:
    - number of menus in project: 1 menus
    - total menu duration: 0:39 minutes
    - total menu capacity: 37.370 MB
    Movies:
    - total movies duration: 78:25 minutes
    - total movies capacity: 4.291 GB
I have searched in the idvd forum for similar issues and I am stumped at this point. I have tried deleting the encoding assets and re launching idvd with the changed preferences, and still the same error. I know you mentioned something about free hard drive space available, and I have very little left. 4GB to be exact due to massive hours of non-edited footage. I am not sure if this is why, but I do not recall ever needing free space to burn memory onto a separate dvd. I would be more than happy if I am wrong, and it would be a quick fix. Otherwise, the technical nightmare continues. It's all a learning process and your expertise is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
