IDVD 5 unexpectedly Quits at "Process Movies"

I also am having a problem with burning a DVD as some other have had. iDVD quits as soon as it hit the Process Movies part.
My configuration is this:
G4
OSX.3.9
1 gig RAM
iDVD 5.0.1
Using Best Quality (over 60 minutes of stuff)
I have slideshows and movies (1 created in iMovie which is just pictures and transitions) and QT movies created from iPhoto.
I trashed the com.apple.iDVD.plist, repaired permissions, and deleted any encoding.
This did not happen with iDVD 4.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
Lisa

Anil,
Have you burned a DVD with your new system yet? Try burning a small two minute movie from iMovie to make sure everything is working. Then try your 1 hour and 56 minute project. It will take several hours with close to 2 hours of material usually triple the time. Do not use other applications when iDvd is burning. You can search on closer time estimates for rendering times. Be aware it will take along time for this process. It is not uncommon for iDVD to appear to be hanging and not working. Welcome to Apple and a new set of problems but there is alot of help out. Also start a new thread or question when you have a problem. Many regulars will ignore you for attaching your problem on to another. First try the small movie and we will work from there.

iDVD error message that iDVD unexpectedly quit. Every time I share from iMovie to iDVD and begin the burn process it comes back with an error message that iDVD has unexpectedly quit. It did not seem to do this before I loaded iLife. How do I resolve this? One thing I do know is that I am limited in hard drive space and I am clearing some of this up until I can purchase a larger hard drive. I have an external hard drive but I am using the internal hard drive to build the movie. [email protected]

    Hi Ron,
Been to S.N.O.B.? I love that restaurant!!!
This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
You'll need to reset some Preferences.
But I think your real problem is probably free space on your start-up drive, based on your comments. You should have 20GB+ free.

  • IDVD unexpectedly quits after clicking "Save as Disc Image"

I want to author and burn a DVD, but my iBook doesn't have a DVD-burner.
Unfortunately iDVD 5 (or 5.0.1 build 26) quits unexpectedly after I click "Save as Disc Image". The system offers me to send a report to Apple which I have done a dozen of times.
The error report looks like this: http://lepo.it.da.ut.ee/~aloola/idvdunexpectedlyquits2.html
My iBook came with Panther and iDVD installed. Since I did not need it initially I deleted it to save disk space. A few weeks ago I upgraded to Tiger. A few days ago I needed to author a DVD. I reinstalled iMovie and iDVD from my Panther install discs (the upgrade to Tiger DVD does not contain them). iMovie seems to work just fine. I captured the video (about 23minutes) from camera and after adding chapter marks launched an iDVD project from iMovie. The authoring worked fine as well. Up to the point where I need to save my dvdproject as disc image. iDVD just quits.
So I tried reinstalling it, changing preferences, creating a project with a small .mov file (25MB), repairing permissions, using using the "'Pfurz' and 'Hurz'" files etc. Nothing seems to make it work. I have 15GB of free space on my hard drive and it is very hard for me to free some more. Anyway space shouldn't be an issue, if I try to save a dvdproject that only contains a short (2:30) movie trailer. There should be plenty of room for rendering and saving this small disc image.
I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice what to try next. I am out of ideas and frustrated about having bought a program with my iBook, that is virtually useless without this "Save as Disc Image" feature working.
Is there a direct way to contact Apple support by email to notify them about this issue and receive official feedback whether it will be repaired or if my computer perhaps need some "repairing"?

    aloola,
    Welcome to the iDVD forum!
    after adding chapter marks
Make sure your chapter markers conform to these rules:
    http://dvd.kentidwell.com/?page_id=53
    changing preferences....repairing permissions
I know you've done it before, but it's a good idea to delete the iDVD plist file anytime iDVD unexpectedly quits, so do it again.
    15GB of free space
In your case (only 23 minutes of movie) I'd have to agree that 15GB should be enough. But do everything you can to get more space anyway.
Sometimes movies themselves have some glitch in them that is causing iDVD to crash. Make another short dummy iMovie (just use some Ken Burns clips) and see if you can "Save as Disk Image" Also check to make sure there isn't "extra" audio that extends beyond the end of the video in iMovie, as this has been known to cause problems.
Try creating a new user and see if that user can "Save as Disk Image"
Is there a direct way to contact Apple support by email
No you call Applecare (by phone) if your Mac is still eligible.

  • IDVD unexpectedly quits, then whole computer shuts down!

My computer has been having problems more and more lately. The main issue that worries me is the required restart. I will be working in iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and the application will quit unexpectedly. Then after trying to restart the app a couple of times, a big grey screen will scroll over my entire desktop and require that I restart the computer. The text will read, "You need to restart your computer, hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button". I just upgraded my RAM to 4GB since I'm making a lot of movies recently. I have about 80GB of extra hard drive space. I have repaired permissions and run Mac Janitor on my hard drive. Lately, iPhoto has not opened correctly and I had to rebuild the library, twice. Most recently, I tried to burn a DVD on iDVD with a Sony DVD-R disk, the movie is about one hour long. I did not have any other apps open, "sleep" was turned off, and I let it burn throughout the night as usual. I woke up and it had frozen. I tried to burn again on a new, blank DVD, and iDVD unexpectedly quit. On the last attempt, I got the grey screen as mentioned above and I had to restart. Any ideas on what may be the problem? My next plan is to burn the movie to a disk image and burn from there, but I'm still not certain that this is the reason for these problems. One last note: I got iLife 08 for Christmas, as well as Final Cut Express (good christmas!), do you think installing these new applications with iLife 08 might help the problem? Thank you!!

I installed the RAM last night and the computer was working fine. It is possible that the RAM is not working correctly, however the problems did exist prior to installing new RAM.
I have lots of internal hard drive space, around 80GB at least. I do not have the exact number as I am not at my home computer, but it is definitely sufficient given system requirements I have read in the past. I am not including the space on my external hard drive.
I will upgrade to 10.4.11 asap and see if that helps.
    Thank you.

  • IDVD unexpectedly quits and/or video freezes during burn

Please help! I'm going crazy trying to get a completed video project burned onto DVD. I have three video programs (one is a slide show), all created in Final Cut Pro and saved as either Final Cut Quicktimes or Quicktime movies using H264 compressor. The programs are imported into iDVD 4.0.1 (they cumulatively amount to less than one hour). Two different things are happening. Sometimes, iDVD churns for 16 hours, spits out the DVD, and says it unexpectedly quit. The DVD plays, but the slide show program freezes about 3/4 into (audio continues but video freezes). Other times, iDVD churns for hours and hours, only to quit and spit out a blank DVD.
This has never happened in the past. I've never before had trouble burning DVDs. The only change I recently made was this: I changed the name and password of the administrative account user. Also, this computer was iSync'd with another mac and about a week ago, all my preferences disappeared and programs opened as if for the first time (although nothing on the hard drive was lost).
Here's what I've tried: MacSweeper (although it has authenticaltion problems - I authenticate and then everytime I try to run it, it says it's not authenticated, so I can't tell if it's working), MacJanitor, I've checked all the preference settings and nothing comes up in error. I've also tried the Easter Egg approach and I got the same result (freeze 3/4 through).
    Here's what I have: iMac G4, 800 MHz CPU, 1 GB memory, OS X (10.4.2), iDVD 4.0.1.
The slide show program is the only one messing up on the burned discs. Do you think it has anything to do with the new H264 compressor (in the past I've never used that, and the other two programs - which are fine on the DVD - are Final Cut Quicktimes).
Help me please - before I do something violent to this computer!!! Thanks for any advice.
    Shannon

Thanks for your suggestions, David. My remaining issues are these, and anyone with ideas is welcome to chime in here:
First, I've never encountered this problem in the past, even with the same amount of available disc space. It seems like the Tiger upgrade is what's causing the problem, but so far it's been impossible to isolate. Has anyone heard anything about this or found a permanent solution?
On that same note, I understand what you're saying about an external drive. I don't have one, and it seems superfluous that I should need to spend money on one when this process worked fine a year ago. But I guess I'll try it if nothing else works better.
Second, fortunately, I wised up to the Disk Copy solution to make back-up copies of my ONE usable DVD. But I'm extremely concerned that I will encounter this same problem the next time I need to burn from iDVD. I have no idea why this one disc worked and all my other attempts failed. There must be something identifiable going on in all these similar cases, and it doesn't make sense to me that the permanent solution lies in somehow working AROUND iDVD instead of through it. And I guess I won't spend the money to upgrade to iLife '05 if the possibility exists that this problem will persist.
So there are my lingering concerns and frustrations. For now, I'm walking away from this project with exactly ONE useful DVD produced from iDVD out of approximately 20 attempts. Something's wrong with this picture. Ugh!

  • IDVD unexpectedly quit

I have tried numerous times to finish this DVD. I have done this many times before and never encountered these problems. It get throught the menu processing, the slideshow and menu processing, but when it gets through the audio, and just about to burn disc, it unexpectedly quits. I am pressed for time and can't figure it out. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

    Hello, Nick (a fellow Greek?),
    Welcome to the discussions.
Have you tried deleting iDVD's plist? Repairing permissions? Then restarting computer?
You don't say what country you are in, but this might help. Have a look at this thread regarding languages: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1573368&#1573368
You also don't give any information regarding your computer system and the app versions you are using. Go to your 'public profile' to add these. Will help us out when trying to figure out a solution.
Some problems that prevent burning have to do with chapter markers. Do you have any? And, if so, have you followed the chapter marker rules:
    1. No chapter markers within 2 seconds of the beginning or end of the movie.
    2. No chapter markers on or within 2 seconds of any transition.
Also, what type of media are you using for burning? Verbatim DVD-R 4x or 8x highly recommended.
Can you 'save as disc image?' Saving as disk image allows you to see problems before actually burning to a DVD...saves wasted disks.
Have you tried redoing the iDVD project--creating a new project, dragging in your movie again, etc.?
These suggestions shouldn't take you very much time, and hopefully one of them will work for you.

  • IDVD unexpectedly quitting

I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.9 and iDVD 6, and I know that's old software now, but I checked for software updates and it was just for GarageBand and iMovie. But every time I try to burn a DVD, it unexpectedly quits (right after it asks me to put a blank DVD in). How can I fix this? Do I need to buy the newest iLife and Snow Leopard?

    Hi
Think it should work - see if You find help in my list
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. *com.apple.iMovie.plist *
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    iMovie updated ?
    QuickTime updated ?
    Mac OS version ?
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

I run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac.

  • Quicktime unexpectedly quits w/ HD movies

Whenever I close a high-def trailer from the Apple site the QuickTime player unexpectedly quits. It also does it when I try to quit the player instead. It does this consistently, every time.
    Any ideas?

Whenever I close a high-def trailer from the Apple site the QuickTime player unexpectedly quits. It also does it when I try to quit the player instead.
Have noted this on occasion when I am in too much a hurry and close the file or player while the application is still off taking care of "housekeeping" operations like closing the cache, closing the stream, etc. Luckily, file writing seems to be better protected and generates a modal message or I would be constantly be killing files in the middle of conversion operations. Can't be sure that this is your problem here but would suggest you stop a file before closing the player and/or simply pausing a moment to ensure the application "catches up." At times it seems as if QT is trying to simultaneously process two or more commands and closing the player or application takes place before the other command(s) or action(s) is/are completed, looses its stack return and issues the crash message. (May be a programming bug as simple as not checking for pending operations before closing the player/application.)

  • Aperture unexpected quit when processing thumbnails

Every few minutes, Aperture quits while processing thumbnails. And I don't mean previews, just thumbnails.
    Any idea?
I have tried deleting all my preferences for Aperture, and creating new ones, and I even have tried so far as erasing the program and installing a new one.
But I am sitting here and watching it crash after it loads about 500 thumbnails, then crashes again.
    Anyone having this issue?
I am on 10.4.10 and have all the latest pro-application updates.

It sounds like maybe you have a corrupt image in the Library. Try Importing small sets of images into new Projects so you can isolate the corrupt image. If this is the case, you'll be able to run fine after that image is deleted.
You might try with a New Library since the Image could be somewhere in your Library already.

  • "iDVD unexpectedly quit" while in step 3

Well, first I believe it quits in step 3 because I have never seen it say step 4 but I come and go as it is burning.
The project is big-17 GB/66Minutes& therefore I am trying to burn on "best quality." I have been reading the posts for 2 weeks trying to find the problem-saw that I need over 20GB so I had 25GB Freed up before trying again with same result-"..Quit" Tried restarting comp & idvd with nothing else running. tried Macsweeper. I Pray it is not a problem in the slideshow-Running iDVD4.0.1 & Panther on my G4.

    Hi Dillon
    Virus - Very un-likely.
A confused hard disk - most likely: There are maintenance to do to all computers
    Widows as Macs.
    a. If You let Your Mac run from 00:00:00 to about 2 am there is an automated
sequence that runs and does some tidying up.
    b. Other things to do:
    - Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    - Repair Hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool) - You need to start from CD/DVD or
    one external hard disk
    - Eventually: Start a new account - log into this and re-try.
The "Repair Permissions" is suggested by many of us in this forum to be run
    - before a new instalment of programs AND
    - after the instal.
    c. Another thought: How much free space is there on Your hard disk.
    - Mac OS needs about 10Gb just to keep everything open
    - eg. iDVD needs about 15Gb more to do it's job
    - the material to be processed eg. a movie file that iDVD should convert to
    mpeg2 and a DVD-disk needs storage eg about 13Gb/hour
So You see it is really easy to get into "Low free space" - troubles.
If about 5Gb or less free - You would certainly get into strange problems.
Please - keep us updated on progress.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Idvd 5 unexpectedly quits

I am using idvd 5 and it starts up, but then quits and gives the error message of idvd unexpectedly quit. I am using an external drive and have done the patch to allow idvd to recognize my drive. I have deleted the file everyone suggests and it still doesn't work. My computer has 640 mb sdram and 20GB hard drive.

It is actually to help it read an external drive. It is called 'iDVD_Egg.dmg.sit. This allowed me to open idvd on my computer. However, it doesn't completely open. As soon as the graphics for the templates should come up it unexpectedly quits.

  • Strange "Unexpectedly Quit" error

My dad is a bit of a videofile. His latest project consisted of 50GB of raw footage that edited into a 53 minute presentation. Burning on iDVD took more than 3 hours. When iDVD almost finished the burning process, iDVD unexpectedly quit. The DVD was readable... but corrupted at the very end. Why would iDVD quit at the home stretch like that?
-The computer was not touched at all in those 3 hours outside of little mouse movements to check progress.
-Unfortunately, imovie, itunes, iphoto, skype, and text edit were also open at the time of burning. However, none of them were manipulated while iDVD was burning.
    Ideas?

you say a little mouse action to check progress ..... any chance you accidentally hit the cancel button?
if not, then the last thing iDVD will encode is audio .... thereafter it actually starts writing the lead in and actual burn to DVD-R media. If you interrupt this process (power surge, media problems, etc) then it can have an issue at times with the lead out which may be what you are looking at.
Try making a disc image to the desktop prior to burning to verbatim / maxell and lower the burn speed to 4x or lower using apple's disc utilities or toast.

I used the projecter theme and have a scene selection menu and have it looking really good, the way I want it.

  • Unexpected quit durning burn

I have a 58 min. project that burned fine once. After I made one change and tried to reburn, I have had 4 failed attempts. Each time, iDVD unexpectedly quits durning burning. Any suggestions?

How would I know if I have all of the iDVD upgrades?
Run software update within Software in System preferences. There is a most useful option for it to run automatically weekly.
Also, there are no special moving video features in the project. It is just an interview with my aunt, still pictures, transitions, 4 titles with background music, 3 chapter markers.
It's just possible that the background music is causing this. Check project info in iDVD and make sure the inks are still correct.
Should I repost my original message in hopes that someone else will answer?
Leave it a day or so, others may see it. It will show what you have tried.
Exactly at which stage does it quit and after how long?
