IDVD 6.02  track initialization problems and no disk image

"There was an error during track initialization and iDVD can't continue burning this DVD (the disc has not been touched yet!). Select 'Delete Encoded Assets' from the Advanced-menu and try burning this project again."
This has happened 5 times now both when trying to burn to DVD-R and trying to save as disk image on desktop. Very frustrating.
Project exported to IDVD from Keynote 3.01 running OSX 10.4.7 on a Powermac G5 D2.3 GHz with 2.5GB RAM.
The project is just 1GB using iDVD 4 theme "Transparent Blue" with a run time of 15:14 mins and HD has over 20GB free.
Also tried it from the other internal HD which has over 100GB free.
PBG4 Ti DVI and PMac G5 D2.3Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Both TV (using a Sony DVD player) and on my Lacie
Photon 20 monitor - the slideshow jpegs and Keynote
fonts look poor compared to the straight QT movies
that are part of the project and made using iMovie.
Your QT movies are probably much higher resolution than your DVD.
JEPGS are pretty hi res.
Ultimately, all the resolution you can get on an NTSC DVD is 640x480 pixels in the square pixel terms of digital cameras. The HD discs we can create today have the same 'limited' resolution - they just stretch the pixels on playback.
Someday ... when we can all afford systems with TRUE HD format burners and players, things will get better.

  • IDVD on Snow Leopard: Flashing blue video on disk image

I recently updated my system to Snow Leopard and have run into this problem using iDVD. I created a 20 minute movie using FC Express HD and brought into iDVD. No problems creating menus, etc., and then created a disk image. While viewing opened disk image in DVD player, video played normally until some music started playing at the event I recorded. As soon as voice is heard in song, the video freezes, and turns into a flashing blue image. The flashing continues until the song is over a couple minutes later. After that, video displays again normally. I created a short segment (480x270) using Mpeg Streamclip to show how problem occurs.
    http://www.roslender-ballroom.com/idvd/show.mov
(Might take 30 seconds or so to download before displays.) I was wondering if this is a DRM thing with the music playing in the background? Does SL have this type of checking now? If so, why wasn't audio cut out too? As a test, I created a disk image of same video using Toast 9 and it worked fine (no flashing). I also, booted up my 10.5.8 system backup and created disk image using iDVD and same iDVD file and everything worked fine there, with no flashing during segment with music. Puzzled.

Yes, I have added extra non-apple RAM, total is 8GB. I think first 1GB was Apple, and the rest are matched pairs from Crucial, a well known supplier of memory here in US. Memory info from System Profiler is below. Not sure how to check if memory is bad. Again, problem does not show up using iDVD in 10.5.8. If problem can't be identified, I'm hoping it will magically go away as future software updates are applied to 10.6. Thanks for your help.

  • IDVD freezes when I try to burn a disk image.

I have a MacBook Pro and am running 10.4.8. I used IMovie HD 6.03 to make a movie from digital photographs with audio. I used IDVD to create a DVD. When I burned the disk using IDVD 6.03, the DVD was pixelated. I read in a thread in the discussion on IDVD that if I create a disk image and then burn it with Toast at a lower spped, you get a better result. I tried several rimes to create a disk image, It encodes fine through the menu, when it gets to encoding the movie, the program freezes. I have closed all other programs and turned off the airport. I also have over 30 Gb of memory. Any sugestions on what is causing this problem or how to fix it. I also tried creating the disk on a 13" MacBook - it also froze.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Thanks.
I actually read a post after mine that showed a lnk that says the same thing. I will give it time. I gues the reason I was concerned is that when I burned the DVD to using IDVD it did not take very long. However, when I tried to burn a disk image, I left it sit for 2 hours and it was stuck on encoding the audio. I will try again and let it sit.

  • Fix to the problem-- Back up Disk Image could not be mounted

In order for TC to backup your entire HD it needs to create a Disk Image on your Mac. For example you would have seen your computer do this operation if you ever installed programs on your Mac computer.
I actually had this same problem and I searched the forum for answers. One fix that I found was that your computer might actually not be named. To fix this click on the apple in the upper left hand corner and then go to >System Preferences. Then click on >Sharing, after you do that you will see Computer name at the top. Type in whatever name you like for that part and then also turn on file sharing by clicking the box next to it below.
The other fix to this problem...which was actually the solution to mine, was that during setup 2 files for a Disk Image mount were created onto the Time Capsule itself. It is only supposed to have one. *In order to fix this problem-->If your Time Capsule is setup so it allows file sharing you should be able to see it as a connectable disk drive in your Finder window under sharing. Click on Time Capsule from there and enter in you password. You should now be able to search though the files on it. Since this is your first time setting it up there should only be one file visible on the Drive and that one file is what creates the mounted Disk Drive...(What I found on my Time Capsule drive was a file labeled with a bunch of numbers and then a Shared folder and then another file with a bunch of numbers in that). For me it actually turned out that the first file was not working properly but the one in the shared folder was. So I deleted the first file and dragged the second file that was working out of the shared folder and into the main part of the Time capsule Disk and then deleted the shared folder.
The way you can tell which file is the correct one is by double clicking it, if you get an error message right away, delete it. If it starts to load, then that is the file you should keep. After I did this mine worked fine and backed up my disk last night. I hope this helps

I have had the time capsule since it first shipped. In that time I've TWICE suffered a corrupt backup disk image (which I checked by trying to hand mount it by selecting the TC under sharing, and trying to open the sparse image - each time it failed and reported an unfixable error). Each time this occurred after the machine had been working flawlessly for 3 or 4 weeks. This makes the machine completely useless in respect of Time Machine. The disk seems to check out as I've just zero'd all data and it did not report a fault, and I have now reset the capsule (using the hole at the back) hoping that perhaps I can give it one last shot. It seems to me that basing these backups on a diskimage is a bad idea because in principle you could lose a single bit and the diskimage will not mount (unless there's redundancy in whatever header information etc. it uses) and then you lose ALL your files. I would have thought that backing up as individual files would be more robust to occasional corruption. Anyhow, this is all very disappointing, and I've been in touch with an Apple rep I deal with to seek advice. Apple need to fix this. I don't know if it's a problem with Time Capsule, or Time Machine.

  • Problem with mounting disk images

I have recently downloaded a media player and have had some problems. When I download the file to my desktop and try to run it, it gives me a "warning" window. In the window, it says that "the following disk images failed to mount" and gives "device not configured" as the reason. The file on the desktop's path is .dmg just to be more clear. So...yeah...any advice??
    Jay

Just to make sure (I don't think this is your problem, but it's easy to check), make sure /System/ Library/ CoreServices/ DiskImageMounter.app is present on your Mac.
Do you have another user account on your Mac? If necessary, use System Preferences> Accounts to create a new troubleshooting-only administrative user account. Check if that new user account can open .dmg files. If it does, that indicates a problem with the preferences in your normal user account. Use Preferential Treatment to scan your prefs. You can also drag the ~/Users/ [yourusername]/ Library/ Preferences folder tot he desktop, log out and back in, and see if .dmg images work, then move your prefes back from teh Preferences folder on the Desktop to the one in ~/Users/ [yourusername]/ Library. Or you might just try moving these prefs to the Desktop:
    /Users / [yourusername]/ Library/ Preferences/ com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.uiagent.plist
    and com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
If the troubleshooting user account also shows the problem, first run Disk Utility/ Repair Permissions. If that doesn't fix the problem, try running the OS X Update Combo 10.4.7 (Intel) (using Disk Utility to expand that .dmg file after downloading).

mount any disk images. I get an error saying broken
pipe. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    Here's what MacFixit says :
Disk images not mounting [Updated] Several users report an inability mount disk images after applying the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update.
If you are having a problem where disk images won't mount, try booting in Safe Mode (by holding down the Shift key while starting up), then re-attempting mounting of the disk image.
This solution is particularly useful for the following scenario: You want to try re-application of the Mac OS X combo updater (a common workaround for issues that occur after an incremental Mac OS X update), but are unable to mount the combo updater disk image.
Prior to booting in safe mode, however, you can delete the following files:
    * /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    * /System/Library/com.apple.kernelcaches
and re-attempting the mount. These, and other cache files, are automatically deleted when you boot in safe mode, but you can potentially save some time by trying deletion of these files (then logging out and back in) first.
Another option is to use an alternative tool that can mount disk images, like Mount.app, FlashMount, or Toast Titanium.
MacFixIt reader Joy Denton is one user who had success with our posted workaround:
"Just wanted to let you know that I had the issue of Disk Images not mounting. This occurred after installing Mac OS X 10.4.9 from Software Update. Fortunately, I read your post regarding a possible fix by using the Combo Update and used Toast to mount the disk image. Ran the Combo Update and ran AppleJack once again. I am now able to mount disk images. This was an annoying problem to be sure."
But imho the best advice that can be given about software updates is to always have a clone of your system on another partition or external HD so you can boot on it if anything goes wrong. From an external system you can repair your internal disk, install the Combo update if the incremental one failed, etc.

  • Problems with ecrypted disk image

I'm trying to restore my laptop (Titanium DVI) from an encrypted disk image, and am having no luck. I have my laptop in target disk mode hooked up to a Mac Pro with the backup disk image.
When I use Disk Utility and attempt a restore, it prompts me for the disk image password, and it starts copying (and apparently succeeds in copying some items). But then after only a few seconds, it prompts me for the disk image password again, and I enter it again, and then I get an error 2, no such file or directory and it dies. After this subsequent attempts without rebooting result in error 16, Resource busy. Finder shows no disks mounted, but a ls of /Volumes shows that there are in fact copies mounted there. unmounting them from the command line does not clear the resource busy problem, but rebooting does.
I thought maybe the encryption is confusing things -- support for this seems sketchy. There seems to be no provision with command-line asr to deal with encrypted disk images. Also, hdiutil can do some things, but for instance I can't use convert to read the old disk image and create a new one, because it tries to apply the -stdinpass option to the new image, not the old one. I'd like to try making an unencrypted image to see if that is causing the problem.
edited to add that I'm doing an erase restore.
    tom

You choice. Since the immediate problem's was solved, you might want to start a new thread on the diskutil issue in the Unix forum: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=735 and start a new one in the Using Mac OS X Tiger forum on any Disk Utility issues.

  • Problems creating a disk image on an external hard drive

    Hiya,
I've been trying to create a disk image on my dad's external hard drive to hold my back-ups all day with no luck. I've managed small ones, e.g. a few MB, but when trying to create images 20 or 40 GB in size (which is what I need), it isn't working.
When I've tried creating them in Disk Utility with the place to save them to as the external HD, it says "Unable to create... Illegal seek" which doesn't explain much to me! I have been successful in creating a large disk image on my own HD, but when I try to move it to the external HD, it says "Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (Error code -1309)."
    Extra info:
    - I am saving my back-ups in a disk image, as they must be password protected, so that's why I'm not just copying them over.
    - There's plenty of space avaliable on the external HD, so it would seem that isn't the problem.
    - The HD is a Freecom Classic SL, connected via USB cable.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks alot,
    Charity

Found the answer. It was formatted for Windows.

Just importing as I would direct from the SDHC.
Strangely, the video plays fine in the L&C window when deciding on I&O points but not inside FCP7 project (?).

  • Thermometer and mounted disk image???

I've set Time Machine to back up to a disk across my network.
Everytime it runs, I'm seeing the disk image mounted on my desktop and a thermometer showing me the progress. Both disappear when it's done.
This only started happening recently. I don't know why, and it's kind of annoying.
Is that how it's supposed to work? Again, it only started doing it recently.

When the image is mounted, click here and follow the instructions after modifying them to make the drive invisible.

  • Problem creating a disk image

Hello I'm trying to create an encrypted disk image on one of my external hard drives using the OSX Disk Utility, and am receiving the following error:
'unable to create "file Name.dmg". (no such file or directory)'
I'm creating the disk image as read/write, and with 128-bit AES encryption.
I've tried to create another disk image on my OSX HD (not an external), and still get an error, only this time:
'unable to create "file Name.dmg". (resource busy)'
Any suggestions? There is plenty of free space on both hard drives.
    I'm running a Power PC G5 duel 2ghz, with OSX v 10.5.8.
    Many thanks in advance...

    OK it seems no one can help, so I'll try a different question;
The reason I want to create an encrypted disk image is because I've been everywhere on the 'net' and cant find out how to password protect a folder on my Mac.
This seems like something that should be very straight forward, but for the life of me I cant find what I'm looking for. Every post I read refers to creating an encrypted disk image, or playing with folder permissions - non of which actually achieve the desired result.
Surely its not that hard create a folder that requires a password to be viewed??

  • Problem creating encrypted disk image

I have just moved from an Aluminium PB G4 with 10.3.9, on which I successfully created encrypted disk images and sparse images.
I now want to do the same on a brand new WD My Book attached to the new Macbook Pro. I open Disk Utility and click New Image. But when I do so, there are fewer options than there are on the old machine. I only have
    Save As
    Where
    Image Format
    Encryption
No option for specifying size, no sparse option.
Also, if I try and create a dmg on the My Book, I get 'Unable to create "myfilename.dmg". (Invalid argument)'
    Any suggestions? Thanks

V.K.'s suggestion worked. Thank you. But now I've found that I get the full set of options in Disk Utility too. Baffled.
In the week I've been using my new Macbook Pro, I seem to be getting eerily similar experiences, i.e. apps don't work right, then I quit and next time they behave themselves. Yes, I know it sounds weird.
Is this an appropriate place for me to ask further questions. Namely, what's the best place to find out about 1. read/write v. sparse disk v. sparse bundle? 2. partitions - should I used them, whatever they are? and 3. why are the bigger disk images called CDs and DVDs? If I want a passworded place to put files on my external drive, bigger than 500MB, is there any reason not to use one of the CD/DVD size options?
    Thanks

  • I made a slide show with music and random transitions in iPhoto.  I can't burn it to a DVD.  The burn button in iPhoto is not highlighted, and when I exported the slide show to iDVD, it lost the random transistions, and the disk won't play in DVD player.

Two problems:  1. My iphoto slide show loses its random transitions when I export it to iDVD.
    2. When I then burn it to a disk, the disk will not play in a DVD player, but only on my MAC.
    Any ideas?

The random transitions can only be random when played in iPhoto.
If you are in the slideshow mode and use the Share ➙ iDVD menu option a quictime movie will be created of the slideshow with the first random set of transitions and imported into iDVD.  The transitions, however,  will be fixed permanently and will not be changed again.
There is no way to get any sort of random behavior in an iDVD.  When it's burned to disk it's locked permanently.

  • Qemulator and hard disk image

    Hi,
I tried to set up WinXP in qemu using qemulator. The installation of Windows ended because "there's no hard disk available". Which stands to reason, because no virtual hard disk has ever been created. Quemulator doesn't seem to have an option for it. Such lack is hard to believe in; I tried docs, but it's supposed to be obvious, probably . Could anybody rub my nose in it, please ?

You need to create HD image, either with the command dd or using qemu built in feature.
    Look here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Qem … disk_image
    or here:
