IDVD 6 - No Audio

I've burned my project to DVD, played it back on a computer with no hitch, everything works great including audio, however, when played back on a DVD Player there is NO audio.
I have confirmed that other DVDs do play on the DVD player with audio. The problem is in the encoding.
Please advise.
Thanks

So the finished DVD works OK in your computer - right?
however, when played back on a DVD Player there is NO audio.
Have you tried it in OTHER set top DVD players?
iDVD produces DVDs with uncompressed PCM audio. It's possible (but highly unlikely), your set top DVD player doesn't like such audio.
It MOST likely sounds like a burn-error issue caused by poor media and/or a high burn speed.
Verbatim and Maxell media is good. Burn speeds of 4x or lower are best.
If you are using iDVD 6, the only way to reduce the burn speed is to create a disk image file out of iDVD (an option under FILE) and then use Apple's Disk Utility to burn the disk image file to writable media. (Disk Utility allows you to reduce the burn speed as does iDVD '08.)

  • IDVD no audio solved, but ...

like many other, I had the problem that when I edited my movies in iMovie and iDVD the audio was fine, until I started burning them on DVD or disk image. Than there was either no audio at all, or after some minutes (usually 5-15) the audio was gone.
I tried lot's of tips that I found in this forum, but nothing helped.
My data was on an external USB2 drive (mac formated). Since access to USB2 is somewhat slow on macs, I got a new firewire drive. Using the terminal cp, I copied all my data to the new harddrive. When I than opened my iDVD project and did my 101 try to burn the DVD, everything went fine. I tried my other projects that I got stuck with (no audio) ... all of them burned just fine. When I do it from the USB2 drive --> no audio !!!
So my problem is solved and I'm happy.
But I would like to know just for my sanity what is causing this problem when having the data on a USB2 drive (400GB, MacOS Extended). Does anybody has any idea?
The drive is slower than a firewire drive. But the only effect I would expect from that is that I have to wait longer until my movie is rendered ....

    Welcome Uwe_Meier
Glad to hear the issue was solved eventually. To answer your question, iMovie and iDVD6 were designed to work well with firewire devices. They are often problematic at best with USB.
The reason for this is that firewire offers a sustained data stream which is in practice ideal for most video applications, whereas usb transfers data in packet technology (burst of data that are entirely CPU dependent). Firewire is actually smarter technology for most high speed data transfers (and especially video) since it is not cpu dependant. FW negociates bus conflicts on its own whereas the same bus conflict can slow USB to a crawl.
The drive is slower than a firewire drive. But the only effect I would expect from that is that I have to wait longer until my movie is rendered ....
Nope. This isn't correct. Here's why:
"While USB 2.0 has a higher theoretical speed limit (480Mbps) than Firewire 400 (400 Mbps), Firewire is much faster than USB 2.0 in real life usage, just by nature of the design of the protocol.
Firewire has very little overhead and is far more efficient with sustained data transfers than USB 2.0.
USB is very dependant on CPU usage and is adversely affected by other processes running on the machine, as well as other devices attached to the USB bus. Firewire is not suceptible to these issues.
In the real world, you will never get anywhere near 480Mbps with USB 2.0. You are hardly even likely to see half that speed.
Firewire is faster than USB 2 in almost every aspect... especially on a Mac."
The above is a quote from Rich Fleming.

  • IDVD 08 audio/video sync drift toward end of DVD movie - fix/workaround?

Anyone know how I can fix this issue? It's driving me crazy.
I've just spent a few evenings in iMovie 08, editing together the video of my son's birth. All looked & amazingly good in iMovie. The "Large" .m4v file output by iMovie - Shared with the Media Browser - plays perfectly in Quicktime too.
However, after adding that shared movie to iDVD 08, and burning a DVD, I noticed that the audio sync drifts toward the end of the Movie when plated back. At the start of the DVD all seems well, but by the end of the ~1hr 20 minute movie the audio is unbearably out of sync with the video. Completely unwatchable.
After a little Googling I came across some reports that iDVD might not deal well with video that's been recorded with 12-bit audio. I've confirmed that my camcorder is (was!) set to 12-bit rather than 16-bit (the default, I'm sure). So if that's the problem I'm hosed... it's not like I can get a retake on that footage
Is there a reasonable workaround for this issue? I'm obviously unable to re-take the video (or the other 10 hours of DV video tape I've yet to use in an iMovie project). Ideally I'd like Apple to release a patch for this. Shouldn't it be possible for iDVD to account for audio that was originally recorded in 12-bit... even if it's just a checkbox you have to select to tip it off?
Then again, perhaps this is totally unrelated to the 12-bit issue, and this is just a run of the mill bug?
As I said... iMovie generates a MPEG4 video file of the Movie that looks/sounds perfect, so it seems this sync issue's being created somewhere in iDVD as it's rendering the audio/video to burn to the DVD...
    Thanks in advance.

I've tried most of the options I can think of, and the audio sync drift issue continues on this ~1hr 12 minute iMovie/iDVD 08 project.
A couple of promising ideas tried used QT Pro, to export the audio track from the iMovie generated MPEG-4 file - as a WAV file, resampling to 48kHz and 16-bit... then Adding this back to the video track in the MPEG-4 file (having deleted the original audio track). In another test I also tried the Add to Selection and Scale option. Oddly enough I think the Add to Selection and Scale attempt generated more sync issues than before in the final DVD movie... so I stuck with the MPEG-4 file containing the video track and the added, resampled at 48kHz & 16 bit, WAV audio track.
This was saved as a self contained Movie file, producing a QT .mov file. I moved this .mov file into the iDVD projects directory structure so that it was avalable in iDVD's Media Browser. I then reworked the iDVD project to use this QT large.mov file, instead of the original iMovie large.m4v file.
As a reminder... the original large.m4v file has the following properties:
    29.97 FPS H.264 Decoder, 960 x 540, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    0:01:12:07.16 duration
The resampled and saved QT MOV file has the following properties:
    29.97 FPS H.264 Decoder, 960 x 540, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
    0:01:12:07.16 duration
BOTH versions of this Movie file play flawlessly within QT Pro... there's no audio sync drift evident toward the end of the movie unless I use iDVD 08 to burn either movie file to a Physical DVD (or DVD Disk Image). In both cases the resultant DVD Movie exhibits significant audio sync drift as the ~1hr 12 minute movie progresses. The sync goes out by ~ <= 1 second based on a rough visual assessment.
I've not yet tried to burn either the original iMovie produced MPEG-4 video file or my QT Pro tweaked audio track .MOV file version to a DVD on my PC...
... But I have used an application called Burn (referenced in this earlier/archived iDVD sync drift forum post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1332100 by user F Shippey - http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/) to take the QT Pro tweaked .mov file version of the original MPEG-4 file and burn it to a DVD...
    Results:
The Burn app burnt DVD plays with NO audio sync issues!... Even though it was generated from the same audio tweaked (48kHz/16-bit resampled) QT Pro .mov file.
However, whenever I burn a DVD using iDVD 08 the audio sync gradually drifts. It matters not whether I use the original iMovie 08 generated MPEG-4 movie file, or the QT Pro version of that file with the resampled audio track (the same one that works fine with Burn).
It sure looks to me like iDVD has a problem... Again, refer to http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1332100 for someone else who seems to have run into similar challenges.
    Am I overlooking something?
    Thanks in advance.

  • IDVD - No Audio in Disc Image

    Hi,
I've started experiencing this issue with version 6.0.3. When I save my iDVD project as a Disc Image and play it on my computer, there is no audio (volume) when the video plays. First time, I didn't bother to test the disc image and burnt it to a DVD and found that there was no audio when I played it with my DVD player. But then when I directly tested the disc image, there was no audio in it either.
I went through a few posts on this discussion forum. One of them suggested using an earlier theme from 5.0. I tried that too with the same result. For some reason, there is no audio in the disc image. When I play the footage directly in iDVD, it plays fine with full audio, so I don't think there is any issue with the way it was exported from iMovie to iDVD.
I've used the same DV video camera before to import to iMovies and and then export to iDVD. I've never had this problem before. Anyone else facing this issue?
Also, I have tried exporting to Quicktime directly from iMovie and I get a pop up saying some unknown error was encountered.
    Please help!

I've had the same problem (as have many others), and I've found both an odd related symptom and a weird fix, not mentioned in any of the posts I've seen. I also use iDVD6.0.3.
First, the odd symptom: after you build the non-working disk image, check the VIDEO_TS files that it produced. In my case, they all had a date-time stamp about 36 hours into the future. From a programmer's viewpoint, this looks suspiciously like a memory leak (i.e. data overflowing its allocated bounds and corrupting some program instructions or other critical data).
Second, the weird fix: I have an iBook that still has iDVD5 on board. I used that to suck in the iMovie6 project, and it built a working disk image with no problem at all. (And the dates on the VIDEO_TS files were sensible.)
In my opinion, this is a major bug in iDVD6.

  • IDVD 4 Audio problems

My audio works just fine in both iMovie, and iDVD. When I play the DVD I burned the audio works just fine for the menus, and slideshows. After playing a movie for about 00:01:30 the audio cuts off for the rest of the movie. Any ideas?

There can be some goofy audio problems. One recommendation is to Extract the Audio from your problem clip while in iMovie and see if this makes a difference in the DVD. [this creates a separate sound file, which sometimes fixes audio problems]
The point where the audio stops -- is it the beginning of a clip? near a transition? or?

  • IDVD Menu Audio

Whilst I can add audio to my top level menu it can't be heard on playback. Audio plays ok on submenus and slideshows. I'm using iDVD v7.01

I want to report back that I was able to get audio working in the iDVD theme I had chosen. I'm not sure what happened or why, but it is suddenly working. Here are the details:
The theme I was attempting to use was an old theme (Western). From the drop-down in iDVD, I selected "Older Theme" and then selected "Western". I was prompted to download the old themes from the Apple website and I followed the instructions, doing so.
After install and reboot, I selected the theme. There was no audio applied, so I selected a suitable mp3 from iTunes and dragged/dropped. No audio.
I shortened the audio file, re-dragged and dropped. No audio.
I then began experimenting with the different audio types. No audio on the theme no matter which file type or size I used.
I followed the suggestions from this forum (removed audio file, clicked on the icon multiple times). No audio.
Rebooted and tried again. No audio.
Then I thought I would attempt to take an existing, newer theme where the audio was working and see if I could change the audio. I did that and the new theme worked.
I decided to try again so I created a new project and selected the old Theme Western again and dragged-dropped the audio file and guess what ... it worked.
All I could think was that by selecting the newer theme and changing the audio, I must have somehow got the application to "un-mute" or something like that.
At any rate, I think this is a bug and have filed a report. Hopefully, Apple will provide us with a patch to fix.
My Christmas project is finished - and just in time.
    Thank you for your help!

  • Idvd fit audio to slideshow

When I import or create a slideshow with music in Idvd, I choose the fit audio to slideshow option. The timing of the specific slides with the music has been choreographed, especially the conclusion of both photos and music at the end.As an Iphoto slideshow,a Quicktime movie, etc...the product is perfect. However, once in idvd the sldies will continue past the conclusion of the music.Even deleting thumbnails does not solve the issue. This wasn't an issue until Leopard upgrade.Any thoughts?

I had a simialr issue today as well which you may wish to read about as to how I resolved (or worked around) this issue.

  • IDVD 6 - Audio Disappears from video at 49:55 time!?

I hope you can help me out!
I've been working on a DVD that is just over 55 minutes in length.
The single video file is a DV-NTSC QuickTime Movie with chapter markers, as exported from Final Cut Pro 6. I know FCP inside and out, as well as QT, but the iDVD situation is puzzling.
So, all audio plays fine in the FCP timeline, QuickTime movie with chapter markers, and iDVD menu editing area.
The audio abruptly quits at the 49:55 minute mark when a DVD is compressed and burned with iDVD 6. The same happens when I make a Disc Image and play the image with DVD Player-- the audio stops at exactly the same time.
All other iDVD projects work fine!
What are your thoughts on this?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Interesting. What is happening at 49:55 in your video? At 55 minutes, you're pretty close to a full disk at max quality -- are your preferences set for Best Quality (1hr+ productions) or Best Performance (<60 min, but depends some on how many menus, menu music, DVD-ROM, etc.). You might try best quality to see if that makes a difference.

  • IMovie to iDVD Missing Audio

Weird issue that I can't seem to find solution too after searching the discussions. Imported some footage from DV camera, short little movie of the kid. Laid a sound track over it and then used it in an iDVD project and now about 30 secs into the movie the original audio off the DV is missing. Starts out fine - audio and soundtrack, then the vocals (original DV audio) just go missing.
Odd thing is I have made hundreds of movies like this and never had a problem. Matter of fact I exported this particular movie to MPEG4 and it was fine, it only seems to happen on conversion to MPEG2 (ala iDVD). I even tried converting to MPEG2/DVD via FFMPEGX and sure enough it occurs there also. So its something in the conversionto MPEG2.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a solution?
FYI - I believe the audio is 16bit - as recommended. Latest iLife - iMovie 6.x, etc with all current updates.

  • IMovie to iDvd - No audio- disc image did not work-reopen iDvd files empty

I am making a 45 minute movie of a day at Disneyland. (My daughter wants it all so the editing is minimal)
I have tried to burn 3 times. each time takes about 12 hours.
first attempt had an error, i know not when, nothing burned to disc.
second attempt burned to disc, the 6.0 theme looked great, MP3 music played, worked on TV set
NO audio on the movie. trash the disc.
Third attempt burn to disc image. end up with two folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. the audio folder is empty. no image
All the audio in the movie is off the video tracks except for ONE sound effect.
Is that causing the problem? Is the update causing the problem?
When I reopen any iDvdproj the themes are all blank even if the project file size is 5.8 GB. that does not seem right.
I have another smaller project with the same problem, the iDvd files are blank when I reopen them.
Right now I am trying to compress the movie into a QuickTime file but all the options were confusing since I am not an expert. in another 6 hours I will have results I have no idea how big the file will be, but the image willl remain the existing size ?? I am afraid it will be too small.
How come it seems so easy to make a dvd to watch on you own TV yet so IMPOSSIBLE?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iLife 06 updated

    Hello Wade,
the problem seems to be the audio. Give us a little more info on what audio you used in the iMovie project (original audio, music, MP3, Aiff...).
Also: what audio setting does your camcorder have? Should be 16-bit, 12-bit is a big no-no with iDVD, see this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=494268&tstart=0&start=45
12 hours seem a long time to encode 45 min of video ... your mac should be able to do that in 4-5 hours max. I would suggest you convert all MP3 audio to AIFF before importing to iM.
If your original audio is 12-bit you can try to export the whole audio (original & music) via QT using the audio only option with 24-bit Integer, then re-import into iM.
Get the latest QT update, if you haven't done so already.
Also do some basic iDVD troubleshooting:
    1. free some space on the startup drive (15-20GB recommended)
    2. Trash preferences (com.apple.iDVD.plist) and empty trash
    3. Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility
    4. Clear Cache Files (Tools: CacheOutX, Onyx)
Have a look at what John Beatty says in this thread about iDVD trouble shooting:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=508221&tstart=0
Third attempt burn to disc image. end up with two folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. the audio folder is empty. no image
the AUDIO_TS folder being empty is perfectly normal for Video DVDs, only music DVDs have audio in that folder
    hope this helps

  • IMovie to iDVD lost audio

I tried searching and couldn't find anthing and I'm not sure if this is an iMovie problem or iDVD problem.
I made a movie in iMovie using video clips I converted to DV streams using MPEG Streamclip. I also added some music from my iTunes library to the movie.
Everything plays fine in iMovie, but when I play or preview the movie in iDVD there is no sound at all including the songs from iTunes.
I went ahead and added some music to the iDVD theme and burned a dvd.
When I play the dvd there is sound for the music I added to the theme, but still no audio anywhere else when I actualy play the movie.
    What am I missing?

I bought iLife 06 because I thought the problem was due to some themes I added to iDVD.
Everything worked out great and I still have the added themes. Not one problem.
The only problem is the whole process to burn the movie from iDVD takes twice as long and still hangs up on the audio encoding process. I knew this before I bought it.
Of course, I used the latest themes , threw in a clip for every floating window, , music on top of that, submenus, and many scenes.
It took me about 6 hours to burn it with great results.
    Thanks for all the help.

  • VCR to Mac to iMovie to iDVD no audio

Why does the audio in a video transferred from VHS to Mac to iMovie to iDVD not play? It plays fine in iMovie.

I use Toast Ti 5.2.3 to burn disk images from iDVD without problem with Tiger. I suggest Stuart extract the audio tracks from the video clips in iMovie before sending to iDVD. Just select all of the clips in the time line and use the Advanced menu option to extract the audio. The will pop up in the audio track below the video timeline track. Then send to iDVD and burn the disk image, etc.

  • Preview in iDVD fine, audio drops off in data image or burned DVDs

Playback in Final Cut HD Express and iDVD preview works perfectly. I create a DVD image and the audio drops out the last minute of a 39 min program. The movie file source in iDVD is DV/DVC Pro. I did a Quicktime conversion from Final Cut using High Quality H.264 and the audio remained but the quality was awful. I did a program info in iDVD and the DV movie did not eat up too much space in iDVD so that's not an issue. I have 28 avail. GB in my external drive where the project is located so not an issue.
I have 23 GB left in my internal drive so that wouldn't be an issue either.
The Apple Store techs were stumped.
The audio that goes missing in the data image and a DVD I burned was a fade out done on Final Cut. There is a blue line on the timeline, but if that was an issue then it wouldn't play back in iDVD. It DOES play back perfectly in iDVD. Somewhere in the conversion from iDVD and a data image or DVD messes with that audio. Any hints?

No definite suggestions, except for things to try (might they count as hints?):
Before exporting from FCE, did you mix down the audio? (Sequence>Render Only>Mixdown).
Did you export a reference movie, or a self-contained movie? Whatever you did, you might try the other.
What versions of FCE, QuickTime, iDVD? Some recent QT updates have caused strange things to happen in older versions of FCE.

  • How to make iDVD project audio tracks blend together

I've been working on my first iDVD project in years, Everything is coming together nicely so far except the audio transitions aren't very smooth... When the music loop begins to play with the start up for the menu screen it's fine... But once you click on the menu for the photo slide show the music sounds pretty abrupt when starting up and not smooth when going from one to the other
Is there a way to blend the Menu music and slide show music so it's more of a fade out to a fade in ? so it's a smoother change one one to the other ?

I don't know of any software that will automatically fade out the menu music at whatever point the user clicks on a video. But, perhaps the situation can be improved by creating the slideshow in iMovie -- then you can use those controls to fade in the slideshow music. Or you can use audio editing software to make a version of your first song with more lead in - then import that alternate version and use it for your slideshow.
