IDVD 6 v/s DVDSP v.s iDVD 8

Hi all! I've been using FCE and iDVD 6 to create DVDs made from SD video shot by me on miniDV cameras and I've been pretty annoyed with the process and somehat disappointed with the results. I used to use DVDSP 1.5 and loved it. I used it in conjunction with an early version of FCE back on my old eMac and the DVDs I made looked great. When I picked up my G5 iMac and upgraded to FCE 3.5 I lost the ability to export to mpeg2 and ever since then I've had tons of problems getting a decent image onto DVD. I've been using iDVD to create DVDs using my exported QT files and I've had pixelating, interlacing artifacts, freezing, you name it. I finally got a decent DVD that plays OK but the quality isn't quite what it was with my old setup. The image quality looks a little softer to me, and the edges of objects aren't as sharp as I feel like they were back when I was using FCE 1 and DVDSP 1.5.
Because of all this, I'm seriously considering biting the bullet and picking up the FCP suite. I'm wondering though, has anybody else noticed this? Has anybody noticed any difference in quality of DVDs created in DVDSP and iDVD? Or what about iDVD 8 v/s iDVD 6? Are there improvements between the versions (specifically in the mpeg2 encoder) that could make my final DVDs look better? Is it worthwhile for me to consider the move to DVDSP? Any advice or recommendations?
Thanks is advance for the assistance and for taking the time to read this.

I'm not certain you'll see the kind of improvement you want. But you will see minor improvements when using 2 pass VBR settings or professional settings, yes.
It also takes twice as long to encode under the pro settings. If you do a significant amount of camera panning (which I personally try and avoid with the use of a quality tripod) and/or you happen to video fast moving objects; then the improvements will be even more noticeable.

  • VHS Captured With DV Converter Judders In Compressor/DVDSP, OK In iDVD.

This is more a statement than a question.
Some people will be familiar with my inability to produce judder-free DVDs from HDV or AIC footage burned in iDVD ........ which I have previously described +ad nauseam.+
    Well here's something entirely different!
Yesterday I copied an old, very poor quality VHS tape to DV via my DAC 100 converter.
Apart from the lousy colour and pictorial quality, the video played OK in the timeline so I exported it to Compressor and burned in DVDSP.
The DVD exhibited the same kind of judder I get when I try to encode HDV in QT Movie and iDVD.
I wasted another DVD getting the same result, so in desperation I exported my project to QT Movie and burned it in iDVD.
The results - PERFECT - at least as far as image steadiness was concerned!

    iDVD 7.0.1 and Compressor 3.0.3
I was hoping this would crack the old problem, but no.
I used a 40 second sequence with the camera panning very slowly across a street of houses with strong contrasty vertical and horizontal lines formed by windows, doors, drainpipes and rooflines etc. in the first half and a person walking across the frame etc. slowly in the second half. The 6' walker was a fair distance away only filling about 45% of the height of the frame.
4 test QT Movies were exported and burned in iDVD on one DVD. These were the straight video and then 3 versions with the Shift Filter in the +1, None and -1 settings.
They all looked the same, with jitter not so much on the vertical lines as the horizontal ones, which was a little surprising. The person walking across the frame definitely exhibited jitter.
All these problems disappear when encoded in Compressor or down-converted to DV by the camera during capture and burned in iDVD.
Still, it was worth a try.
I'm wondering whether it is possible to hack into iDVD and maybe alter field etc. settings in there!
There has to be some simple reason why there is a dramatic difference between Compressor/DVDSP and iDVD and it's nothing to do with quality or power or cost.
Incidentally a friend of mine went on a world tour, using an identical HV20 and rough-editing on her MBP as she went. The resulting rough edits were burned in iDVD and the DVDs sent back to her family. These DVDs apparently were jittery but the family didn't mind!

  • How to import iDVD app from Time Capsule to my new iMac 21" that does not have iDVD?  I can find the iDVD app in the Time Capsule, then what?

I have a new 21" iMac to replace a 6-year old iMac 24.  My Time Capsule has the iDVD app saved (?) and I can find it, but I can't figure out how to move it to my new iMac that does not have the app.  How to do this?

You are probably better to install it from ilife disk.

  • Macbook using iDVD 6 to Macbook Pro using iDVD 11.

From iDVD 6 to iDVD 11, too many files are not transferred.  Anyone got any ideas how to transfer and still get to play on new Macbook Pro.

By play do you mean the project file won't open on the new MBP and display all of the media?  Try this: Open iDVD on your Macbook and use the File ➙ Archive Project menu option.  This will create a project file that contains all of the media files necessary for the project, video, image, audio, etc.
Then copy that archived project file to your MacBook Pro and double click on it to open in iDVD 11.  That project should have all of the files you need.

  • Idvd 08  shuts down after building, idvd will not burn a dvd

Dvd studio pro burns fine, Burning a DVD data disk works fine. Burning a project in Idvd 08 will not burn anything. It simply quits before finishing and spits out an empty dvd disk. I have a imac g5 power pc 2.1 ghz, 500gb hd, 2.5 gb ram and I am running idvd 08 version 7.0. I have tried reinstalling idvd and have even repaired permissions. What do I do? What could it be?

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • *Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb*
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides. Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets

  • IDVD Burn Quality (Cam iMovie '11 iDVD disc

I'm planning on buying a Canon HF21. During my research I found that the HD camcorder>iMovie>iDVD>Burnt DVD produced a very undesirable, low quality disc when played on a DVD player on an HD TV.
During my research I found plenty of other threads on other sites asking questions regarding quality, but have resulted in a "you can't get BluRay ..." tangent.
I do have a BluRay player and I understand that it takes special software/equipment to "burn-your-own" BluRay. I can play regular DVDs on it and use the built in "up-convert" to improve the quality a little.
I guess the "simple question" is: Can iDVD or another software package burn an SD DVD that is comparable in quality to one that is commercially produced? Again, I'm not looking for a BluRay solution, just a burned disc that doesn't lose quality due to compression, etc.
It seems, according to the other threads, the "weak link" is iDVD. I have just upgraded to iLife '11 if that makes a difference. So, iDVD will work by doing xxxx? or I need to get DVD burning software yyyy?
    Thanks in advance.

You seem to have double posted this information.
I will repeat what I told you in the other thread:
Can iDVD or another software package burn an SD DVD that is comparable in quality to one that is commercially produced?
Sure - or very close to it. The limiting factor ISN'T iDVD, it's the video content used. In general, commercial DVDs use very high quality video - well lit. great focus, tripod. etc. It is also carefully processed during encoding.
It seems the "weak link" is iDVD.
DVDs are only standard definition devices as mentioned here many times. It is more likely that iMovie is the weak link in HD video production. MANY people still use iMovie 6 HD because it is the last version that doesn't have interlacing issues with HD content. It you want to know more, check out all the comments in the iMovie forums. There are things you can do in iMovie to make things better - but I want you to understand that iDVD ISN'T the weak link.

  • IDVD not open after Share To iDVD is complete???

    Hi,
This has happened a few times now and I can't find any answerds on other sites.
I create a project in iMovie '09. I edit it. I choose "Share to iDVD". iMovie prepares the project, but when it finishes, nothing (usually) happens. iDVD does not open automatically and show the project, like it should. It has only successfully opened twice in the the last eight projects.
Can anybody suggest a possible cause?
I know that iDVD itself can open the project from the finder, but this is not the issue. It should open automatically.
    Regards.

With both iDVD and iMovie closed, go to your Home folder(the one with your user name on it)/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.idvd.plist
Once you locate this plist file, drag it to the trash. Don't worry; iDVD will create a new fresh one when you relaunch it.
Reopen iDVD and see if it works properly now.
If not, please post back for more suggestions.

  • Just bought an Apple computer. have imovie. do not have idvd. where can I get the idvd application for imovie.

Just bought an apple computer with a compatible movie camera. using the imovie11 app. that came with computer is a great app. only problem is I can't burn a single project. It say's, share with iDVD, but their is no program called iDVD anywhere. why can't I use iDVD and where can I obtain this program.

I bought an IMac a few weeks ago, created a slideshow on IPhoto only to learn that there was no IDVD to burn it. It is available on ILife11 but if you have just spent a considerable ammount of money on your Mac, why then should you have to spend yet more of your hard earned cash on a DVD burning program, especially when you have 3 of the 5 apps that come with ILife11 already?
I called Apple Support, spoke to an advisor who was understanding but really just tells you that it isn't shipped with Lion OS anymore. You then have to insist, politely, of course, to speak to a senior advisor, (if the advisor himself isn't compassionate enough to suggest that himself).
If you can, request a 'callback' where they call you (they pay the call charges), air your grievances calmly & you should receive a free hard copy of ILife 11. The standard Apple support advisor won't have the authority to grant you anything more than a compassionate ear so you must speak to a senoir advisor. I received my free copy of ILife11 in the post a week later. It worked for me, it has worked for others so it should work for you.
Good luck, keep calm & maintain your creativity!

  • *** iDVD 6.0 themes in DVDSP

<Insert sarcastic tone here>. I just ordered iLife '06 for the new iPhoto and blogging capabilitly and was THRILLED to see iDVD using many of the DVDSP templates. I'm so happy that every tom, dick and harry will now be able to use templates from a pro application that costs much more money.
<End sarcasm>. Question. Can I use any of the new 16:9 iDVD templates in DVDSP? I'm pretty sure that I can't open iDVD projects in DVDSP, but does anyone know if the templates work?
Thanks.........oh yeah, and thanks Apple........ <sarcasm yet again>.

I see your point, trust me...but what I continue to find strange is that they are while they are providing DVDSP templates for use with iDVD, they are not really developing any new DVDSP ones. I rarely use templates myself, but occasionally have the "quick and dirty" project that is better to have a template for. Even though iDVD has some of the DVDSP templates, I would never use it because it isn't user friendly for me. I still need the control of DVDSP.
So, although it is a pro app and not "meant" for templates I still find it not logical that they are not developing more complex templates for DVDSP for all those users who are forking out the extra dough.
