IDVD 7.1 "Modified Asset Warning"

"Modified Asset Warning" update is messing up my chapter menus.  How do I avoid?

Hi
My guess is that You encountered the iDVD BUG.
To set this of one makes an iDVD project - then find something to alter in the movie and go back to the video-editor eg iMovie or FinalCut and fix this.
Then when back in iDVD - it will ask You to Update or Cancel - neither works.
• Old Medicine was - Start a brand new iDVD project
• New Medicine (with thanx to Old Toad) - In iDVD discard the movie and trash the media assets(?) then re-import movie.
Now Chapters should now point to their right places.
reg Chapters
• SET NO at the very beginning or end of movie - as iDVD want's to do this by it self
• NO Chapter marks in transitions or within 2 sec from them - this can be worked around by exporting part as QT.mov and re-import this then replaced - so that the transition now is integrated into the movie (can not be edited)

  • How do I bypass modified asset warning

I want to burn the movie into iDVD as is, but if i let it update after a modified asset warning, i always lose the scene selection and I have to do it all over again. What can I do?  I am using the good old iMovie 6, and iDVD 7.1.2

There's a bug in iDVD regarding modified assets.  It's best to start over with a new project. Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Do you know that when you have the movie as you want it in iMovie 6 all you need to do is close iMovie and drag the iMovie project file into the iDVD window to get the movie into iDVD? There's no exporting needed.

  • "Modified Asset Warning"

I've experienced a "Modified Asset Warning" when I quit iDVD and then exported the same movie from iMovie, on the same computer, back to iDVD, minutes later, without making any alterations.
When iDVD then "updated" the assets, the result was that drop zones seemed to lose their content but more annoyingly, once reinstated using "autofill", any subsequent discs lacked audio!
Coincidence or is there a link?
The problem is that iDVD won't let you proceed to "burn" without allowing the assets to be updated, which results in drop zones falling out and no audio!

The problem is that iDVD won't let you proceed to "burn" without allowing the assets to be updated, which results in drop zones falling out and no audio!
Turn off 'Background Encoding' in iDVD. Encoding will then occur ONLY after you select burn disc or create disk image.

  • Modified assets by quitting and restarting iDVD

    Hi,
This has happened to me before. I save my iDVD project, quit it, then restart it and as I begin the burn process, I get the error message 'modified asset warning' which tells me that the modification dates have been changed! I update and burn and the DVD works although I might lose the title I've given it to My Great DVD.
Why does this happen? The time between the quit and the restart would be within a minute or so. In the latest occurrence, I was using a USB drive for both the iMovie source files and the iDVD project file. The external drive would not have anything to do with file dates would it? That's the only thing I can think of for this example. Previous examples had all the files on my Powerbook so I have no idea how the modification dates can be out of whack. To be honest, I try to make it a rule not to quit an iDVD project once I start it because of this problem. It almost guarantees a problem. And it shouldn't, should it? (I know canceling a burn will make the disc unusable...)
Why do I quit? In this case to be sure the project was saved. I am using this USB drive for the first time for this sort of project and I wanted to be sure all was well.
    Thank you.

Suggestion: Don't use USB. Use FW only. And yes it can cause conflicts like this when using iMovie / burning an iDVD. The reason for this is that USB transfers data in packets and not as a constant stream like FW does. Some of your data can be lost in the process .... hence the title name change/s. Not to mention USB puts a bigger demand on the CPU which can lead to other issues as well. Hope this helps but if not, come on back.

  • Modified assets

    Hi,
I encoded the movie I was going to burn to DVD, previewed it and was going to burn it but needed to take a break so I quit iDVD and shut down. When I came back, booted up and restarted iDVD, it told me some of my assets had been modified, did I want to update them? I looked at the list of what was modified. Two files had slightly different modification dates, the times being off by maybe an hour or two. Then, after I ok'd that it started to encode the one movie which is my source all over again.
I didn't modify any of the assets. Maybe OSX did but I didn't. I updated to 10.4.5 today. Did that do it? I did save things before quitting but not right before I quit. I just quit. Maybe that was what screwed things up?
It also warned me to check chapter markings and it turns out one of them was wrong so I have to go back to iMovie anyway but this is pretty frustrating/time consuming.
    Cheers,
    John

    Hi there -
I've just encountered a similar problem. I created burned and saved a DVD project on Friday and upgraded to 10.4.5 today. Now for some reason iDVD cannot find the assets or project files of any of my iDVD projects I'm sure this has something to do with 10.4.5 upgrade...
    Suggestions?

  • MODIFIED ASSEST WARNING/ DVD SPITS OUT BEFORE FINISHED

Man am I frustrated! Background Encoding is NOT selected...when I go to burn the DVD...Modified Assest Warning appears! When a DO the update...all of my chapters are messed up. Then when I try to burn the DVD...after an HOUR of processing...the DVD spits out completely BLANK...the message on iDVD says it's is finished...and the application is still running...This is a Wedding video that I MUST finish...can anyone please help

    Hello, Chris135,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Just to add to Bengt's recommendations, I have found that this is a problem with iDVD 8. You posted in iDVD 6, so I am assuming that is what you are using. I found that version to be ok with handling modified assets, but not iDVD 8.
What I noticed was that my chapter markers defaulted to selecting the same chapter after I had put my iMovie into my iDVD project, but then had gone back into iMovie and changed something. It could have been as simple as correcting the spelling on a clip title or changing an audio clip. Then, when I reopened iDVD, the 'assets have been changed' message would appear. So iDVD recognized the changes, it just was not able to incorporate the changes and play the movie chapters correctly.
I found no fix other than to recreate the iDVD project. Now I don't put my iMovie into an iDVD project until I am certain that I am completely finished with the iMovie edits.
I used 'Grab' to take screen shots of my customized menus and submenus so that I could more quickly recreate them. It took some time, but at least it worked and I did not spend hours and hours trying something else that did not fix it.
If you did not make any changes to your iMovie after putting it into iDVD, your iDVD project is corrupt and needs to be redone anyway.
You should definitely delete iDVD's preference file: Close iDVD and follow this path, YourUserName->Library->Preferences->com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag this plist file to trash. Don't worry, iDVD will create a new fresh one when you reopen it.
Reopen iDVD and see if your movie plays ok with proper chapters.
Oh, and be sure to follow the chapter marker rules: No marker at the beginning of the movie (iDVD creates that one automatically). No marker within 2 seconds of the beginning or the end of the movie, and no marker within 2 seconds of any transition.
Most of us recommend that you do a 'Save as Disk Image' of your iDVD project, and do so from within iDVD.
Select that option under File. I find it convenient to have the disk image saved to the desktop so I can locate it The process looks just like a burn, and the encoding is the same, taking the same amount of time. However, the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk. If the disk image file plays correctly, you can burn to DVD disks quickly using Disk Utility or Toast.
How to create a disk image: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6733.html
To be sure the disk image file is good, you click on it to mount it, then open DVD Player and navigate the 'scenes' to see that each one begins where it should. You can watch as much of the movie as you need to view to be sure it is the way you edited.
If so, then close DVD player, and open Disk Utility.
Drag and drop the disk image file onto the left side of DU window under your drives.
Click on the image file to highlight it, select 'burn' from the menu and insert your blank DVD disk.
Select a burn speed of 4x or less.
Be sure to use a good brand of DVD disk; Verbatim, Maxell, or Taio Yuden. I always use Verbatim DVD-R and burn at 4x or less.
How to burn from disk image: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2087?viewlocale=en_US
There are several advantages to creating disk image files of your iDVD projects.
A disk image file is self-contained, with all the media used encoded into the file, so once it has been created and is good, you can safely delete the original iMovie and iDVD projects, saving drive space since the disk image file is smaller.
A disk image file is a great backup for the DVDs you burn. I wouldn't trust a DVD disk to be my only backup. DVD disks can break, crack, melt or have something spilled on them, etc.
You can always burn another DVD disk from a disk image file.
You can easily move a disk image file to another drive or computer.
If you cannot get iDVD to create a disk image, post back for more suggestions. You may need to try signing on as a new/different account, or you may need to reinstall iDVD.
If you are using iMovie 6, you might try exporting your finished edited iMovie as Full Quality QuickTime. Be patient, it will take time depending on the length and complexity of your movie. (I do this with most of my movies, and everything seems to be smoother).
Once the QT movie has been created, open a new iMovie project, naming it, for example Wedding VideoQT so you know which iMovie is which.
Then, drag the QT movie onto the new iMovie project. Again, this may take time.
Now you have one long clip of your entire movie.
Add your chapter markers. This is easy to do if you have both this iMovie open and your first iMovie. Just go to Chapters in both movies, and move the playhead of the new movie to the same point you had the marker in the first movie. (It actually goes pretty quickly).
Now, close both iMovies. Open iDVD, create a new project. Go to the Movies tab and find the iMovie you just made with QT in its title and drag it into iDVD's main screen.
Everything should be correct with the chapters/scenes, and this time it should burn just fine.
An advantage to making a qt version is that you can place the chapter markers directly on a transition, since the transition is incorporated into the video and is now not a true transition.
Please post back if this is not clear, or if you have any further questions.
    Good luck!

  • Need to turn off "modify assets"

Hi all! I'm new here, and need some help!! I made an awesome movie in iDVD 7.0.2. When I open the file to burn it, it says I need to modify assets. When I hit cancel, it will not burn. When I allow it to modify, all the chapters buttons lead to the same clip. When I close and re-open, the chapters work fine until I am prompted to modify. What do I do to make it stop???
    Thanks!

    Hello, penny251,
    Welcome to the discussions.
There is a bug in iDVD8/9 that happens when you put an iMovie with chapters into your iDVD project, and then go back to iMovie and make any edit---even as simple as correcting spelling on a title, or adding a short audio file. You will then get the usual 'assets have changed, do you want to update' message. If you select 'update' iDVD will look as if everything is ok, but as you discovered, all your 'scene selections' will default to the same scene(chapter). You can see this in Preview, as well as after burning a disk.
iDVD recognizes that you have changed your iMovie, but it does not incorporate the changes correctly and gets stuck with the chapter selections all going to the same one, often the one nearest the iMovie change, but not always.
iDVD 6 used to do this correctly, but the new iDVD version does not.
(BTW, iDVD 8 and iDVD 9 are exactly the same version).
The only 'fix' for this is to redo/recreate the iDVD project. Sorry Having had to do this several times.....I use 'Grab' to get screen shots of my iDVD project menus and the inspector windows so I don't have to try to remember which songs for how many seconds on are each submenu, and what the chapter titles were, etc. It does go faster the second (or third) time because you have already created the project once.
For the future, do NOT put iMovie into iDVD until you are entirely finished with your edits, but, if you just have to change something in iMovie after it is in an iDVD project, be prepared to redo the iDVD project.

  • IDVD wont encode the asset-HELP?

Using iMovie 6.01. I export from iMovieHD to iDVD and after setting up menus etc I look at properties and the asset movie isnt encoding....sits stagnant. This was a project started in iMov 05 but the reason I upgraded was the same reason. Any suggestions?

Hey I've been having problems with iDVD 6 not encoding assets too.
I noticed that when you change the encoding option from Best Quality to Best Peformance (or vice versa) you get the empty bar and no encode.
iDVD will still encode it when you burn, but it won't seem to do it automatically in the background as it should.
    I haven't found a solution yet......

  • IDVD crashing upon encoding assets

    Hi,
I have scanned all sorts of forums and have not been able to find the answer needed to fix the following problem. During burning a DVD, iDVD crashes when it encodes assets.
I have 50GB left on my HD, did permissions repair, rebooting computer, changing quality settings, deleted the iDVD plist file and nothing works. I have tried burning to DMG, and Video_TS file. Same goes. Some of my assets on the film are HD, but this never stopped it from burning before.
Can anyone give me any advice or share a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    M

    Hi Bengt,
You bring up a good point. The project was shot in XDCAM 25fps. After postproduction, the file became APRHQ. Due to the weight of the file on export (about 5 GB), I decided to export it through Quicktime conversion as NTSC SD Widescreen. The video weighed about 1.06 GB, so I decided to use it.
I looked at when it quit during the encoding process (during encoding another asset), so I saved that as a last reserve option.
The DVD burned with the original APRHQ file, but now the question: Why would it not accept the QT converted SD export?
    Best,
    M

  • Idvd not responding - Connection Failed Warning

iDVD 08 is not responding. The menus appear at the top, but that's about it. I get a spinning ball whenever I mouse over menus. Shortly after starting, I get the message: Connection Failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.
I've tried opening iDVD from application folder as well as from within iMovie.
It's been a couple of weeks since I used it. Worked fine last time. There was an update that I noticed in the last couple of weeks. Perhaps that's it, but I don't see any other posts.
Any suggestions, please let me know.
    Thanks.

Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner.
I own both a powerbook G4 and Mac Pro, and network the two sometimes in order to switch files back and forth as necessary to take things on the road.
Although the iDVD project was exclusively on the MacPro, (Indeed, I even tried starting a new project on the MacPro, but iDVD still wouldn't respond), I believe the Powerbook must have been connected at some point in the process (just hanging out there), and for some reason iDVD got confused. As soon as I reconnected the Powerbook, iDVD was fine.
And then I disconnected the two computers and iDVD continued (and continues) to work fine.
I'm not a programmer. Not sure what happened, but it seemed to fix itself.
PS: For those programmers out there, when I say iDVD was unresponsive, I mean it. I had to force quit every time. It wasn't just that iDVD couldn't find any necessary files.

  • Disk Image loses all features but Anime Pop theme

I completed the iMovie, clicked on iDVD, went through the whole process of customizing, then created a Disk Image on my Desktop as last chance to check content before burning. My Mac reported, two hours later, that a successful Disk Image had been created, as "Outriggers.img." and there it was on my desktop.
BUT when I tried to review it on iDVD it showed nothing (no movie) but Anime Pop going round and round with drop zones empty, "Play Movie" and "Scene Selection" had no buttons, just the title word "Outriggers" showed that I had been there at all. I closed it.
I clicked on iMovie to open the project in the usual way.. It would not, "Outriggers" was greyed in both Desktop (where I was storing it) and in Documents.
I was able to open it on my external storage drive, LaCie Firewire, where I kept getting "Modified Asset Warning" about something I must Update. I did update every time the offer came on. What I saw was my movie with no iDVD opening features. After I gave several instructions to "Quit", the proper opening file came on which gave me the choice to Open a New Project, or an Existing Project. I clicked on Existing Project, I got what looks like a normal result, and I should be able to burn to disk.
BUT, remember this is happening through the Firewire drive which is only a storage place, and I have not been able to see a preview through the Disk Image. I shall count my blessings and burn the movie, taking a chance that it really will burn properly (not just the incomplete Anime Pop going round and round). But I do not feel comfortable with this. I believe there is an error somewhere that will continue to bug me in future projects.
Has this happened to anyone else? Up to now, I've been using Final Cut Pro with success, but the new iLife05 is irresistible. I have done two previous projects with no trouble at all.
My three-year extended warranty just came to a close a week ago, so according to Murphy's Law, this problem I have described to you is right on schedule.
    Steeler.

BUT when I tried to review it on iDVD it showed nothing (no movie) but Anime Pop going round and round with drop zones empty,
Read the disk image creation and viewing details. DVD Player for viewing, not iDVD.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Disk Utility to burn the DVD.
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (not the .img, the one below) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. Your SuperDrive tray will open. Insert a recordable DVD. (DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and Tiger.
b Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • How can i update an asset in i DVD 09

I have done many many videos using imovie 08 and i dvd 08 as well and every time i added a movie to idvd for the final to burn it, i would go back and end up editing the movie in imovie for one reason or another. When i went back to iDVD to burn it after the edit, it asked if i would like to update the modified asset (being the movie).
I am trying to create a dvd in iDVD 09 and i have created the menu, etc., how i want it, but ended up having to change a few things after i had already added the movie. Is there a way to just update the movie that is already in the iDVD file? or do i have to re-export it and recreate the whole thing. Thank you for your help! this has to be done by thursday, so please respond asap. Thank you all again!!

i actually found another way. you are able to delete the previous asset in iDVD and when you do this, you are able to preserve your dvd menu as you had it before the movie was added. then if you go to media, under movies, there is a list of movies from imovie. you arent able to use them unless you export the movie from imovie though. you have to go to share, media browser then I exported as a large movie file. it worked well. this was after the edit, but i didnt have to change or recreate any of the drop zones in the menu on iDVD after i added it to the movie.
I actually dragged the large movie file from the media browser on top of the previous video file and it just created a sub menu with the updated movie file. i had to reformat the text, but the drop zones and audio for both the "play movie" menu and the "scene selection" menu were still intact.
Thank you for your reference though.

  • Changing TV Standard - CRASH! Opening iDVD'04 project

I raised this before, was hoping that the 7.0.2 update was going to fix but no.
Is anyone out there from Apple? Helloooo! You have a defective product that I paid
for and can't use. do you care?
This is the displayed message when opening a project that was made with iDVD '04
    "Changing TV Standard
Changing the TV standard will require iDVD to encode all previously encoded assets again."
Which is total BS anyway as the standard has not changed, it was 4:3 PAL in the project and it is 4:3 PAL in the preferences
    Rapidly losing faith with Apple.

As a test I took an old iDVD 4 project on my 933 mhz G4 running Panther and saved it as an iDVD ARCHIVE with include Themes and Encoded Assets checked.
I then opened it on my 1.33 Ghz G4 Powerbook running Tiger and iDVD '08.
It 'sort of worked'. Things opened fine but I had a broken asset warning on video in the menu button. I was able to drag and drop the movie on the menu in the Map view to get rid of the broken asset warning, but the movie in the menu button doesn't play. The projects preview fine, but without the movie playing in the button.
Conclusion: an iDVD 4 PROJECT ARCHIVE with Themes and Encoded Assets included DOES open in iDVD '08, but may require some fixing.

  • Button shift in iDVD 5... can't put it back

I have an iDVD 5 project with three submenu chapter screens, each with several buttons. Everything was working fine until I went back to iMovie to cut out a chapter. When I went back to iDVD, the first button of every screen had jumped forward to the screen just before it.
When I put them back on the screen they're supposed to be, they are now the last button instead of the first (this is visible in map view). The result is that when those submenu screens come up when playing the disc, the active button is the second button instead of the first.
It's a small detail but it's annoying. I can't seem to get the buttons back to where they should be so I'll probably start again from scratch and reload everything. Not a huge deal but I would like to understand what happened for future reference.
Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.

Just a guess but it sounds like you may have to delete all encoded assets from the advanced menu and then start the encoding again for iDVD since you modified /altered your original iMovie project. I suggest not changing the iMovie project once you have decided to launch iDVD to burn or author a DVD (otherwise iDVD can get confused).

  • IDVD crashes when burning

My iDVD project looks great in the preview. When I try to burn to a DVD-R, iDVD gets as far as completing the rendering of the menu assets. When it goes to process the first movie asset, it crashes. The message on the report is
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x0000002d
I have tried the process 3 times and it crashes at the same place with the same message above. Any help appreciated.

Did you use an iDVD theme, or modify it with your own graphic? Someone just found their graphic to be the cause of a problem.
This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
