IDVD and Compressor vs DVD SP

f I prepare a MPEG2 file with Compressor and add that video file to an i-DVD project, will the image quality be better than if I simpy use i-DVDs own internal encoding?
Will i-DVD recognize that the video file has ALREADY been encoded and NOT encode the MPEG 2 file again?
I am asking about using Compressor with iDVD because there is a template in iDVD my client would like to use, and the project is on a tight deadline. I don't want to have to created the interface from scratch in DVD Studio Pro
Thanks in advance for all input!

iDVD will not import m2vs from Compressor, not even the new iDVD (though it shows up in browser)

See above

You could try creating the project in iDVD and use a software like dvdafteredit(.com) to use the elements that way, if not mastering the software is a few hundred dollars.

  • IDVD and Compressor Settings

I just upgraded to FCPX and am trying to output a movie to iDVD. The Compressor settings only do .ac3 or .m2v files, neither of which is compatible with iDVD! If I create the movie in iMovie, I loose resolution when I burn the disc. So am looking for a solution that gives me a higher quality final product.

    Hi
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • IDVD and Lacie D2 DVD Writer

The Lacie d2 is an external dvd writer dvd+rw Dual Layer. It has both usb 2.0 and firewire connections. I am using firewire right now.
I reran another burn attempt last nite (all night!) and it is stuck/stalled, actually iDVD is stalled right now as I type this, at Multiplexing and Burning, "time remaining: about one minute" and says done, but the progress bar is just one hair away from being complete.
Clearly after two tests I can see that iDVD is doing everything but burning the disc. What is wrong?
I would rather not make a disc image because I tried and it says it needs way to much disc space to make the image.
Can someone help me figure out why iDVD will not finalize and burn dvds to completion? I ran two iDVD burn attempt and twice the program seems to stall, best way I characterize what happens since the program does not freeze. It says multiplexing and burning, and says under a minute left and even says done! But, both times I have cancelled, because it sat overnight waiting to finalize, and when cancelling the disks are coming out still blank with no data written.

How much available HD space do you have right now?
What kind of media and what brand are you using?
Find a way to clear more HD space. You can clear video files already burned to DVD-R media, burn your iPhoto Library to DVD to clear more space , or even consider clearing languages you won't need on your system with an app like Monolingual. No problems will be created by removing unneeded language files (however it's highly recommend you avoid removing architectures on any intel mac).

  • IDVD and Compressor

I have a project I'm working on to try and burn an .AVI file to a DVD I have everything ready except that it seems compressor is unable to convert it... It gives me the message that it doesn't have the appropriate codec in order to do the transformation...
Is there a codec I can get in order to convert this file to DV format to ready it for the burn?
If not is there a 3rd party shareware that can do it?
    Thx..

I was trying to use "Compressor"
    Yikes!
should I try using MPEGSTREAM CLIP?
    Yes.
    Is it freeware?
Yes. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15466 But you'll need this:

Do you have QuickTime Pro? You can use that...maybe, depending on the AVIs.

  • IDVD and Dual Layer DVDs

I've been perusing the forum and see a lot of questions about this but not a lot of good answers.
We have a G5 Mac, with a SuperDrive, OS X 4.11 and iDVD 5.0.1. My wife does a lot of photo/video work and has done several dual layer DVDs with no problems; there's a radio button that lets her select dual layer media.
Last summer the SuperDrive went south and the local Apple dealer replaced it with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-875S. The specs for this drive say it supports writing dual layer media. System Profiler agrees: it supports writing dual layer DVDs.
iDVD doesn't agree: the radio button has disappeared and there is no way to select dual layer media. This is a problem as she has a project sitting here that will not fit on single layer media.
    We've tried Patchburn: nothing.
We've tried a forced update for iDVD 5.0.1: nothing.
Don't really want to go to Toast: another set of software for her to learn and me to support.
At this point, it looks like either having the dealer pull this drive and put in a for-real Apple-branded SuperDrive or find a copy of iLife 06 (to get iDVD 6; it looks like '6 is the latest we can go without updating the OS as well). Cost is about the same either way but I'd rather not pay it if I can avoid it.
I'm looking for other suggestions or ideas.

I cannot remember the options for iDVD 5 or 6. I am now using iDVD 08, and it has a dropdown bar in Preferences where one can choose single or dual layer. I would go with iLife 6. See if you can find a disk for sale somewhere ....maybe ebay? If the price is higher than the original cost of $79, or if you cannot locate an iLife 06 disk, email me. I may be able to put you in touch with a place that has a few of them left.

  • IDVD will not burn DVD or preview

I made a DVD in IDVD and burned a DVD last week. I went back into IDVD to replace some photos and movies and when I tried to burn another DVD, the wheel spins and the progress screen comes up but does not progress or burn. I tried different DVDs but same result.
When I am in IDVD, I am also unable to preview the DVD project. I can open up the individual folders and see the photos & movies but when I go to preview it, nothing happens. Is the problem with IDVD? I have 5.01.
    Thanks

    BD3188,
    Welcome to the iDVD forum....
    Try these steps first:
delete the iDVD plist file "com.apple.iDVD.plist"
repair disk permissions with disk utility
make sure you have 15-20GB of free space on your startup drive
    try again....

  • IDVD appears to produce better "hi-def to DVD" than DVDSP and Compressor.

For the last 4 years I have used DVDSP and Compressor to burn DVDs from my HDV and AVCHD/ProRes 422 projects but have always been plagued by the well known less than perfect results.
For some reason creating DVDs from HD material results in slightly lower quality than when using standard def media.
Artefacts such as double-lining and aliasing have been discussed at length in the forums and weird and wonderful time-consuming solutions such as the Bonsai technique have been proposed.
Recently I had reason to go back to iDVD and to my surprise the video quality appeared to be better than DVDSP's.
Gone were the minor but  irritating artefacts I had become accustomed to.
Instead I now get sharp smooth images.
It's still early days and I don't know whether the results are due to the idiosyncracies of my editing/burning setup. The DVDs were played in both a Panasonic BD player together with a Panasonic DVD player and viewed on a Sony 40" HDTV connected with HDMI cables.
Maybe if anybody has a few spare moments between projects they could test it out.
Note that I have only tested this with iDVDs "Best Performance" setting which is suitable for DVDs up to 65 minutes long.

    Ian,
I'm not sure you need another voice in this conversation…but here's my 2 cents.
While I agree that iDVD can do a very good job of encoding HD to DVD specs, I can't think of any reason why it should be superior to Compressor. In fact, my experience has been the opposite; I get somewhat better (cleaner) results using Compressor and DVDSP. The principal reason is I can start with my saved presets and then  – like Michael mentioned…take a small test section and make adjustments if I see something that I don't like.
As for scaling, I do it first, then I make the MPEG as a separate step, (There was a recent thread about this questioning whether this added any value. No mater; it's the way I do it unless I don't have time.)
    Good luck.

  • Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap). Any ideas?

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.

  • I just finished creating a movie in IMovie and now want to burn it to a DVD and make it loop.  Since I just purchased this IMac it no longer comes with IDVD.  My question is how to burn and loop a dvd without IDVD.  Thanks for any help.

I just finished creating a movie using IMovie and want to burn it to a DVD and loop it.  Since I just purchased this mac it looks like they no longer include IDVD.  Is there something out there to help me do this.  I am new to MAC and any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates.
Burn, I have never tried, since I have iDVD and Toast for those ocasions when I need to burn a DVD. However, since it is free, I think it is worth a try.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can alsouse SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.

i bough a new imac, this haven't dvd burner, i bought a external dvd burner but the imac havent a idvd and i need this program, no other one, how to download this and install?

    Hi
how to download this and install?
There are no free DownLoads !
There are no legal DownLoads at all !
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • How do I create a place for my family to log in and download the DVD I created in IDVD?  Can this be done?

I have created a memorial DVD for my Mom who passed this year and would like to share it with family members.  Can I somehow allow them to copy the IDVD I made--maybe in mobile me?  If so, how do I set it up?  Or could I email it to them?  If so, how do I attach the DVD to the email?  Thanks for all help.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie 6 as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • I have created a movie in 16:9 format. I have created an iDVD pane in 16:9 but when I preview the movie that pane changes to 4:3 and burns the DVD as a 4:3 movie. How can I stop that, please I am in Snow Leopard, using FCE4.0.1?

I am using Snow Leopard and have created a movie in 16:9 format (SD not HDV) I created a movie which stays in the 16:9 format in fcp file, .mov fiule and MP4 file. I created an iDVD pane in 16:9 but when I play the movie in the iDVD preview window the iDVD pane switches to 4:3 and it burns the DVD in 4:3. How can I stop this so I get a16:9 DVD. Hi
As I see this I see two parts
    • Howto go from FinalCut to iDVD
    • Howto set iDVD right
In FinalCut Express (to 4) or Pro (to 6 - most probably 7 too)
    • One has to set Anamorphic in the Browser window - menu columns
    • Export as QuickTime movie .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION
In iDVD there are TWO places to set - WideScreen
    - Start a NEW iDVD project - AND HERE SELECT WideScreen 16:9
    - in Project - select Projectinfo
    - now set WideScreen 16:9 - Here too
This use to work for me.
    FOR FinalCut Pro-X - I have not a Clue - as I don't use it. SORRY
BTW - There is a good practice to before BURNING the DVD do
    • Save as a DiskImage
    • Test this by using DVD-Player tool
And if it is OK Size and All - then burn it by using
    • Disk Util tool
    • here set down burn speed to x4 or less (less burn errors = plays on more devices and better)
    • Not using Memorex or NoName etc cheap media - as they usually DO NOT WORK as Video-DVDs
    • I use Verbatim DVD-R as they play on more and even older DVD-players

Seems like there are a lot of problems since this 10.5.6 update... I came here b/c of a prob with iDVD and DVD Studio Pro not working anymore. Was just trying to "Share/Export" an iMovie project to iDVD (and then tried again with DVD Studio Pro) and the program just hung and crashed and also wouldn't let me Restart or Shutdown very easily either. What gives?

    nmctech,
Have you tried to reset the SMU/PRAM?

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good.  You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format
