IDVD and Importing Video Format (Mac & PC)

Greetings All,
Our college is creating a DVD (using iDVD 09). Three will be approximately fifteen (15) total videos at 60 second each. These will come from various MAC AND PC software(s).
What is the best file formats that we can use as 'standards'. We do not want to limit them to just one as it may not be easy for them to use just one - hence three.
Note: The eventual use will be commercial-grade projectors in an auditorium setting (shown from the iDVD-created DVD)
Thanks so much for your assistance!
-jimmy

For openers, do NOT accept ANY AVI or WMV files.
DV, mpeg-4 and H.264 will probably work. You can use the free MPEG Streamclip to convert any of these files that are a problem in iDVD.

  • How to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 Mac version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video

My question: Is it possible to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 MacBook Pro/ Mac Os X version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video?
My camcorder is recognized with 4 pin to 4 pin firewire on laptop with Windows operating system; however, it will not recognize on MacBook Pro with 9pin to 4 pin firewire. JVC website does not offer any updated camcorder driver software for this camcorder and older version driver on CD will not download onto MacBook Pro.

    Hi
With the reservation of that I us:
    • iMovie 9.0.4
    • Mac OS X.6.9
    see my notes
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF

    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Cannot import video on MAC iTunes

    Hi there
I have a some MP4 video files I got from a DVD which are "home" made. So no commercial DVD or anything like that.
I used Adobe Premiere Pro to convert them in a Quicktime playable format and thought I could now import it to iTunes and sync it on my iPhone or iPad.
On a Windows machine I was able to import the movie file but if I let iTunes convert it to the iPhone compatible format it fails. I get a new movie file with the sound but the movie shows only a white screen. On my Mac ( where I actually need it) I wasn't even able to import it into iTunes.
I konw there are many posts around about this matter but none so far could give me a hint to resolve that issue.
Does anybody know the exact settings of an mp4 such that I can use it in iTunes on a Mac? I should be able to export it in any format with Adobe Premier Pro but sofar none of the files worked. Even *.mov files wont import into iTunes on my Mac.
Any ides? Thanks for your help!

iTunes is pretty fussy about what flavors of mp4 it will accept, and surprisingly won't even play .mov. iTunes is not a play-all movie application.  iTunes' ability to play movies developed along with Apple started selling movies in the iTunes Store so it's up to you to guess where the priorities lay in terms of support.  Some seem to have success with using Handbrake or MPEGStreamclip in encoding.  One problem is, not all MP4s are the same, and there's a hadful of different audio codecs supported, along with a hadful of video codecs, and by the time you combine them you're left with hundreds of different flavors of movies.
Something else you can try is installing Perian codecs.
Perian codecs for Quicktime - http://www.perian.org - plugins to add functionality to Quicktime for playing additional audio and video formats
Quicktime audio problems, Perian, VLC - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9013669 - read note about uninstalling prior DIVX support before installing Perian.

  • Capture and import video from DVD

Just switched from PC to MAC. I have my travel videos on DVD's. In iMovie 08 how do I capture and import the video that's on the DVD into iMovie. I couldn't find any help on this topic.
    Any help is appreciated.

Take a look at Cinematize 2, I've used it with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
For the job you're doing you may prefer to use iMovie 06 instead of iMovie 08 (I would).
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Your workflow would go something like this.
Use Cinematize 2 to create a Quicktime file from the DVD.
Important that file into iMovie 06.
From iMovie 06, share to iDVD 08 (assuming you want a DVD).

  • What program to install and convert video formats...?

I am trying to find a program that will install on 10.3.9 and that can convert video formats (ie mpg and mp4 to wmv). Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. I did buy a newer Mac (PowerBook G4 with Leopard) but for now need to use my old Mac. I need to convert to WMV to use on my GoGear mp3 player, which is NOT Mac compatible, only Windows. How I miss my iPod Thanks again for any help.

Well ffmpeg should be included by default. It is the core of the VH engine, but it may have been updated since your version of VH. And you may not need it depending on the conversion you are trying to make. Which version of VH is it ?
So you are trying to convert the mpeg and mp4 files into wmv. Do you select the 320 pixels wide option ? Are the source movies 320 pixels wide ? or larger ?
What settings do you use in VH ? ie. Which tab do you select for converting to ? and what options do you select within it ?
Do you change the destination directory ?
If you open the mkv files in QuickTime, it may complain about missing codecs, click Cancel and it'll leave you with a blank window. Select "Show Movie Properties" under the Window menu, what is under "Format" for the Video Track ? Is there also an Audio Track ?
QuickTime shouln't complain about the movie, mpeg and mp4 should open and play just fine. If it does complain it's almost certain that the files are not the format they claim to be - the Show Movie Properties will sort this out.

  • Transferring 8mm and other video formats

I'm doing lots of video projects in FCE for people with older video formats like 8mm. I was going to just buy a 8mm camcorder to play these tapes because I figured I can get one relatively inexpensive ($100 or so) and just use it as my player. I know there are also player decks for these tapes that are more expensive ($300ish) and I was just wondering what other video editors out there were using? An old camera or did you buy a player. Any tips or advice regarding brands, places to look, would be appreciated.

    Hello There,
You will need to buy a Digital8 camcorder. FCE won't take the regular 8 or Hi8 video without it being converted to digital. A Digital8 camcorder can play regular 8 and Hi8 tapes and can also convert them for use with FCE.

About 1 hour ago I quit FCPX with a project that was nearly finished.
Then I updated MacOS 10.10.3 supplement plus Pro Video Formats.
Then I opened the project again I was working on before.
Now all the clips, the multicam's, the project file show "Missing Proxy".
The relink command finds the looked for clip, but the clip does not show up. neither does it relink all the other clips.
    "Missing Proxy" all over.
How can I get this project back to working order?

    it was set to proxy
I have proxy files for my media
I changed to original/optimized: now about half the clips show up. source: Canon XF305
What about the rest? Source: Nikon D800, Nikon D7000 some are missing, Panasonic is  "Missing"

  • IMovie and Importing video AVCHD from the Canon High-Definition HG10

iMovie 08 does not let me import high definition video (AVCHD) from the Canon HG10 camcorder. Could you let me know how I can do this or what program can do it? iMovie 08 and the Mac do not recognize the high definition video (AVCHD). Thanks for your assistance. Best, Joe

Your camera is on the supported list, and if you will search these forums, you will see that many people are using it.
iMovie recognizes AVCHD, but only from a supported and connected camcorder.
If you prefer not to import from your camcorder, you can buy a program called Voltaic. It takes about 12x realtime to convert AVCHD to an editable format. You can import directly from your camera much quicker.

  • IDVD '08 cannot video format taken from Sony Camcorder

    Hi All,
Pardon me if this question has been posted previously as I'm newbie to the Mac world.
I have tried to use videoes taken from my sony camcorder (mpeg format) on iDVD. But iDVD prompted the message the video is an unsupported file type which was not a problem with toast. The Quicktime player also prompted the video is not a movie file.
I've never encountered this in other OS. Any inputs is very much appreciated.
    Thang

But iDVD prompted the message the video is an unsupported file type which was not a problem with toast.
Toast is an entirely different application.
iDVD doesn't accept mpeg content. The new iMovie '08 might.

  • Recording songs on my PC laptop and importing to Logic/Mac?

I have a Mac desktop and have started using Logic for my recordings. I have a very fast laptop that is unfortunately a PC.
I was looking at this software called Mixcraft which looks like a pretty nice GarageBand clone for doing some recordings when on the road. The only problem is that there is no easy way of importing the project to GarageBand (or Logic), the solution being exporting every song file as AAC/MP3/etc and loading them back up in Logic/GB. This is, obviously, very annoying.
    So my question is twofold:
    1. Is there any PC software out there that will allow me to transfer its projects over to Logic and GarageBand?
    2. and if not, is there a good recording software that works on both PC and Mac? I've heard good things about Ableton Live.. would purchasing a license for that allow me to install it on both PC and Mac and have the opportunity to transfer my projects back and forth?
I realize this is the Logic discussion thread but I couldn't think of a better place to ask this in the Apple discussions and you guys are without a doubt the most knowledgeable bunch I know when it comes to this stuff!
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You can buy an old Logic version for example 5.5.1 which was the last one for PC ( hope you can find someone on Ebay ). This will do the job I guess...

There are many DAWs on the today market which are based for MAC & PC, so it is your opinion what to get...

  • Installing adobe premiere elements 4 and importing video

My Dell laptop will not install Adobe Premiere Elements 4.  I keep getting an Error message.
I do have Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 on my computer, but I am unable to import footage from a DVD.
I think because it is in the wrong format and I need to convert it.
To cope with this problem, I tried to install Adobe Premiere Elements 4, but it will not install.
I tried to contact Adobe Tech Support, but Tech support from Adobe is closed.
Even when it opens, I don't know if they will help.
    Suggestions? Thanks, Sue

I don't think Tech Support will help with something that old... current is version 10
My GUESS is you have Win7 and version 4 is simply too old
As far as using PPro CS3...
