IDVD and Toast . . .

I've finished an iDVD project, shot in HD. I want to burn it to a Blu-ray disk using Toast and a LaCie burner. Is that possible, and where do I start?

Roxio Toast is even easier to use than iDvd IMO. Toast 10 has ok menus but not nearly as nice as iDvd's motion menus. If you want to add Blu-ray functionality to your current version then you'll need to purchase the blu-ray plug in available from Roxio's web site for under $20. That's why I recommend the Pro version. However, the best place for questions and answers is via Roxio Forums.
http://forums.support.roxio.com/
Nevertheless I can say this and I quote from the link /web site below ... Toast 10 Titanium has the ability to copy and burn information to Blu-ray discs, while Toast 10 Titanium Pro adds the ability to burn HD video to Blu-ray via the High-Def/Blu-ray Disc plug-in ($19.99, included free with Toast 10 Titanium Pro).

Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Here's another link you may want to review if you haven't already:

  • IDVD and Toast-anyone else had this problem?

I apologize for the long post, but it is necessary to explain the situation.
I have made 4 projects in iDVD6, 2 SL, 2 DL with no problems. I edit in imovie, send to idvd, then make images which I burn with toast (though I know it is not recommended for the DL). I have not had a single problem....until 2 days ago.
I have created a 5th project, a DL, in the exact same way. The problem this time is that when I try to burn it with toast, I get this error:
    Sense code = illegal request
    Sense key = 0x26
    Invalid field in parameter list
The toast people have been no help. They say it's just a problem with the image file. I have re-encoded it 4 different times (14 hours a pop!), to no avail. I was able to burn one of them with disk utility, but it no longer will . The image mounts and plays just fine on my mac.
So....I tried burning straight from iDVD. I get the "multiplexing" barber pole for awhile, then it says "finished recording", spits out the disk (still blank) and just freezes. I have to force quit.
I have tried trashing preferences, repairing permissions, all the suggestions I have seen in these forums and nothing is helping.
Thanks for bearing with me through that explanation. Is there anyone who can offer any suggestions? I would be forever grateful!
Emac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5) LaCie external dual layer

Yes, my chapters follow those rules. The image file is 7.6 GB and I have 30 GB free on my startup disk. If it matters, I always encode onto and burn from an external hard drive. I am starting to wonder if my drive is the culprit. I went back and tried to re-burn old images that previously burned fine and am getting the error with those, too. I am going to try to get some input from the LaCie folks, too.
If anyone has anymore suggestions, I would be grateful.

  • IDVD (and Toast) never complete writing lead-outs

    Hi,
I've noticed occasionally that when using Toast 7 and iDVD 6 that during the writing process, the application in question persists on writing the lead-out. I understand what the correlation between lead-out and DVD playing length are. However, the drive just spins and spins for hours if left to do so. It is a Pioneer DVR-109 (not Apple blessed). The media is Memorex DVD-R 16x and I frankly haven't spent time trying other media yet.
I'm unable to halt the spinning by any means other than rebooting the computer. Usually, the result is fine. Sometimes the DVD doesn't conclude viewing properly.
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yup, the Memorex disks have been a bit problematic. I was able to burn to an image with iDVD.
I happened to have some TEON DVD-R 8x media a friend gave for another project, and that worked fine. The Memorex 16x media burned at 8x had the same issue.
I had had poor experiences with Verbatim media in the past. But co-workers have raved about the DL disks and the single-layer ones lately. Perhaps I will give them a try.
    Thanks!

  • IDVD or Toast 7

I will be burning my first project to DVD. It is a 1.5 hr project done in FCE 2.03 I have a third party internal superdrive and will be using a dual layer DVD. I also have both IDVD and Toast 7 available. Does anybody know which would give me the best quality output. I will use the Quicktime self contained movie output option.

Hands down, iDVD. I have Toast 7 and only use it to burn disk images of my iDVD projects.
will be using a dual layer DVD.
Why? 1 1/2 hours will fit on a SL DVD-R. Use Verbatim and burn at 4X for best results.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Is it better to export an iMovie project as QT and use Toast to burn a DVD for general use or to export to iDVD and burn VD from there?  Why?

Is it better to export an iMovie project as QT and use Toast to burn a DVD for general use -  or to export iMovie project to iDVD and burn DVD from there?  Why?

Toast probably maintains better quality if you are just doing simple conversion direct from your camera straight into Toast and then to DVD. There's a lot less transcoding steps and loss of quality in that direct to DVD disk creation in Toast. However, having said that,...There's good arguments probably for both.
What I've seen promoted most often (as most people don't have Toast or aren't motivated to buy it) is to Share to Media Browser (choose the Large size option) and then from inside iDVD click the Media Button and the Movies button to find the project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. Drag that project into your iDVD project and burn the disk.

  • Installed iDVD and now I have lost iPhoto

I have an iMac 27" late 2013. I was wanting to burn some dvd's and installed iDVD, while working with iDVD I received a notice that iPhoto could not be opened because it may be damaged or incomplete...Can I get it back???

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • IDVD 5 & Toast Titanium 7

When I drag my iDVD file which ends with, ".dvdproj" into Toast, it tells me that this file is "an unsupported file format and cannot be imported."
How can I burn my iDVD projects with Toast?
It's faster to use Toast than it is to use anything else right?
I just burned a 7 minute DVD using iDVD and it took almost 2 hours. Does it take that long with Toast as well?
    Thanks everyone.

A .dvdproj file is just that - a file that contains your iDVD project. It is NOT the final DVD with mpg-2 encoding. You must select File>Create disk image (or something like that)
How can I burn my iDVD projects with Toast?
You need to create a disk image (as above).
It's faster to use Toast than it is to use anything else right?
    No

    well?
When you create a DVD there are two processes involved. The first is encoding - and THIS is the really slow process. When you create a disk image file iDVD will do this encoding. The second is the actual burning to writable media. This is usually much faster than encoding.
Once you have created a disk image file, if you need multiple copies, you only need to go through through the burning process.
Apple's Disk Utility (free) and Roxio's Toast Titanium will BOTH allow you to burn a disk image to writable media. And both allow you to select a slow burn speed (like 4x or lower) - this is VERY important for best DVD compatability with players.
Roxio's Toast Titanium 6, 7 and 8 all use slightly different approaches to burning a disk image to writable media, so be sure to read the manual if you use Toast.

You will get better results if you use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option and then drag the movie from the Movies pane of the Media Browser in iDVD onto the menu window.
Also I suggest you use this workflow which I learned from Bengt:

  • IDVD & Roxio Toast not working after APPLE-SA-2009-02-12 Security Update

After installing APPLE-SA-2009-02-12 Security Update 2009-001, iDVD and Roxio Toast will not work.
iDVD will launch, and I can create a project. It starts to render the video, but crashes before it starts to burn the disc.
Roxio Toast will not even launch.
Both applications were working perfectly and reliably before this update.
    Anyone else found this problem?
    Greg.

I re-installed the apps, and they're working now.

i bough a new imac, this haven't dvd burner, i bought a external dvd burner but the imac havent a idvd and i need this program, no other one, how to download this and install?

    Hi
how to download this and install?
There are no free DownLoads !
There are no legal DownLoads at all !
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • How can I put the Video from a bad DVD into iDVD and to a new DVD?

I have a DVD (homemade, no copy protection) and it was created with primitive menu software. Is there a way to take the Video_TS folder and put it onto iDVD 08 and make a new DVD from it? The old DVD no longer plays in my home DVD player and I want to make a decent menu for it etc.

Toast is a better option for you.
But if you really need the fancy menus of iDvd and whatnot, then you'll need to find a way to convert the mpeg 2 files to QuickTime for importing into i-apps. This app may help:

  • Importing home dvd into iDVD and tweaking it?

I have some home movies that I burnt to dvd using a commercial dvd burner. now I would like to import the movie into imovie or idvd and add chapters, a theme, etc. Is this doable? If so, how? Thanks for any help you can give me.

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
avoid lossy inbetween formats, as mp4 ...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • IDVD and aftermarket DVD burners

I don't have a SuperDrive on my mac. Can I use iDVD and burn to an external DVD burner? I am so new to all of this so any help is appreciated.

Having hung around this forum for a few years, I would agree that LaCie is a very wise choice. That said, a number of LaCie users, even since iDVD5 came out, have come to this forum looking for support. A LaCie Tech, that frequents this forum (http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=93299) or other users have usually been able to help them out, but a number have needed updated disk burning profiles. Just search this forum for LaCie. They may be all inlcuded in 10.4.x, but many users are still using 10.3 and prior, where profiles may be needed.
And I still say the image route has other advantages you are overlooking. 1) the ability to view the final encoded product, 2)the ability to burn at slower speeds for greater reliability on other DVD players, and 3) the ability to do whatever you like while iDVD is encoding, and then let Disk Utility or Toast have your machine to itself while burning. Plus I archive my images on other external drives.
I think the LaCie tech himself has said as much here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1017511&#1017511
Cache cleaning is certainly a good idea, but I don't usually do it for every burn (or image encode).

  • IDVD6 and Toast 7

I have just finished my first project using iMovie6/iDVD6 and have run across similar problems experienced by others. Specifically painful, the audio keeps dropping out of iDVD6 and the only remedy has been to delete the iDVD6 project and start over.
My question is, is it possible to take a project that uses the iDVD6 iMovie6 files /iDVD6 menu/chapter screens etc and export the pre-encoded project to Toast 7 in order to encode?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    F Shippey,
    Thanks for the quick response.
I have noticed the audio issues when previewing the project in iDVD. The original iMovie project plays fine. I created a disk image last night so I will check on that once I return home.
I typically burn my project from a disk image in Toast and certainly appreciate you reiterating the fact that using iDVD to encode and burn in one step can be a painful/expensive lesson to learn.
Bummer about the iDVD to Toast to encode. I kinda figured that was the case but had to ask anyway.
The source audio is from a Canon GL1 DV camcorder. I believe the audio is 16bit PCM.
I never experienced this in any other version of iDVD and have been editing with the camera in FCE and iMovie for years.
A patch will surely fix this ..

  • Burning using iDVD plus Toast not working

OK, I've made a disk image of a movie, and every time I try to burn it to a DVD using Toast Titanium, Toast crashes. I drag the two files onto Toast, which I presume is all I'm supposed to do. Any ideas?
Also, I get message that four files are not supported. I am assuming that these are the four photos I placed (jpegs) into the themes. why aren't they supported? Am I missing something?
    Thanks!
    susan

Susan, to burn an iDVD disc image in Toast, choose the Toast Copy window and select Image File. Then select the image file itself and burn your DVD.
I was confused by what you mean by dragging the two files when there is only one image file. My guess is you are referring to the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders that appear when you mount the image file. You don't need to bother mounting the image file.
Also, the current version of Toast is 6.1.1. Please use this update because it fixes a variety of bugs in earlier versions.
By the way, when you mention "four files are not supported" this means you dragged the VIDEO_TS folder into the Toast Video window with DVD video selected as the format. If you do this, Toast discards the menus you designed in iDVD and creates its own menu. I don't think this is what you want. The current version of Toast includes an option in the Video window called "DVD video from VIDEO_TS. Using this option preserves the iDVD menus. However, it still isn't necessary because you can burn the image file itself in the Toast Copy window.
Sorry to be so verbose about this, but I thought you'd like the whole story.
