IDVD Buttons

Hi all! I hope someone can help me out with this dilemma that cost me a whole day of work. There are a few themes in IDVD that are not working properly. The memories and wedding white are burning to disc alright but when I select the button to view the program nothing happens only the menu continues to play.
At first I created the slideshow in Iphoto then when that didn't work I recreated it in Final Cut and still didn't work. I tried other programs to the same menu with the same results. I even went in disc utility to clean up the drives but to no avail. I retried it using only a small QT file one time it woked and another it didn't What is wrong???
Thanks for you help,
Annie

Welcome Annie C
How much available hard drive space do you have on the main startup volume or HD? Hopefully it's at least 20GB's....Is it?
Tell us as much as possible about your computer and software. Do you have any external FW or USB devices attached (short of the keyboard and mouse)? If so, power down and then disconnect them while we help you troubleshoot this issue. No third party item/s attached to the computer please.
You apparently used apple's disc utilities to repair the HD. That's good. I'd also request that you look for the following item on your HD and drag and drop it to the trash. Empty the trash and restart the computer. Use the finder (happy face on the dock) to locate this item:
com.apple.iDvd.plist
Now drag it to the trash and empty it.
Try your iDvd project again. Post back if this fails to address this issue. Also please take a moment to review these threads:

  • Where can I find additional iDVD button art

I've got iLIFE 11 installed on my MacBook (Lion), but I don't have any previous versions of iLife. There are very few button options to choose to customize my menus. Where can I find, and how do I import, additional buttons into iLife 11?

Wow! Really, you just can't? How about all the button art from the previous versions? Can those be found somewhere and imported. The iDVD button art from the latest version (came on the iLife 11 disc) is really sparse! Can you "make" your own button art? Thanks for your help.

  • Idvd, buttons and movies order

I created an iDVD project with 12 movies, each with a button.
(What i really wanted was to make 1 movie with 12 chapters. Is there a way to merge the 12 movies into one?)
My question about my iDVD project is: What determines the order in which the movies are being played?
Also, I burned the DVD and the navigation system doesn't allow me to view some movies. I tried to view it on a Windows computer and it only plays one movie and I can't access the others.
    What can I do?
    Thank you for your help.

Import them into iMovie HD and build a sequence with chapter markers.
What determines the order in which the movies are being played?
Sequence of you adding them to the main menu.
tried to view it on a Windows computer
Seen many problems on Windoze computers. Does it work on your Mac?

I have the very same problem. It started when I installed Ilife 6 in February and had so many problems with imovie6 on an important project that I tried to also reinstall 5 to use for the time being. Since then, idvd does not have menu or buttons windows. They are blank. I have tried several times to completely delete idvd and reinstall from the original cd. It is still the same. I am so frustrated by this and can't find the answer anywhere. I have posted this question and had a couple of replies, but nothing has helped. I just installed the newest update, 6.03.

  • IDVD button highlight and navigation

    Hello all,
I am a mac newbie. Anyways, i have a dvd project and it looks just great, but when i go to the scene selection and try to move the cursor (highlight) to a button of my choosing the, the cursor just jumps around to a random button. I set up the chapter markers in imovie and then worked on them in iDvd, however, i didnt change the order of the buttons. Also, and this is a bit off topic, but i have had my Macbook for about 2 weeks now and it has frozen on my twice! Is some kind of diagnostic i can run? Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

jumps around to a random button
That shouldn't happen. Some themes may behave differently than you might expect. Which theme are you using?
it has frozen on my twice!
That's a rather general statement... When did it "freeze?"
BTW, my wife can do weird things to my computer that never happens when I'm in control.

  • Why did an iphoto update removed iDvd from share button?

    Lion os x 10.7
Why did an iphoto update on 2-20-13 remove iDvd from share button in iPhoto?  Can you recoup the iDvd button on iPhoto?
    Thanks for any assistance.

Because iDVD is not longer supported or offered by Apple.  So now you have to export any iPhoto slideshows at the large or medium size to your hard drive, place it where you will be storing QT movie files and then drag into an open iDVD project window being careful to avoid any drop zones in the menu window.
If you place the file in the Movies folder you can acces it and iPhoto photos via the Media pane in iDVD.
In iDVD follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Not rendering before making iDVD project

OK, by reading the post, it appears that the culprit for bad photo quality when making a photo slideshow in iMovie then going to iDVD is the iMovie render process.
So, when I hit the iDVD button is it OK to not render and make go right to iDVD?

    Hello NH Sullivan,
You've opened up a can of worms here! The images, when import into iMovie, are rendered as movie files, thus greatly reducing the quality of images. It is not iDVD that distorts the images. The best solution is to create a slideshow in iPhoto, export it to Quicktime and then import the slideshow into iMovie for titles and music. - Perfect every time!
iPhoto won't let you create a one photo slideshow. If you only want one image add the same photo twice to an iPhoto slideshow. You will have drag the image out of iPhoto and change the name. Then drop it back into iPhoto. Turn the Ken Burns effect turn Off and no transition you'll have a 6-20 second still (static) movie of your image that you can export to Quicktime and add to you iMovie project for editing without any compramise in image quality. You can make the two image slideshow as long as you want and cut the length down iMovie. You'll need about 6 seconds minimum to add transitions in and out.
    Have fun!

  • Can't open idvd

when I try to open idvd I get a message can't find file

    /applications/imovie hd.imovie project/shared movies/idvd/moviehd.mov

Have you tried sending the movie to iDVD by clicking on the iDVD button and then Create iDVD Project button?

  • Updating iDVD project from iMovie - how?

I spent a lot of time on an iDVD project and burned the movie. Except, I forgot a couple of chapter markers that need to in there. I subsequently put them in iMovie - is there a way to update the iDVD project without having to re-do everything from scratch? Thanks. . .Jim

    Hello Jim
I had the same problem (and I missed out a vital bit of video too). In iMovie I went back to the iDVD button on the right (next to effects) and clicked it.
Then, in the timeline I inserted the new (chapter) marker where I needed it, (write the text you want for it in the pane of chapters on the right) . The existing chapters you had originally then get shuffled automaticallly to get the new one in and place the chapters in the right order for you too - clever stuff . I then went to `create iDVD project` and progressed through again and finally to `burn`.........
    Hope this helps

  • Error 34506 in iDVD - same as many others

I have 127GB free space on the hard drive. All software is fully updated.
I too am having problems burning DVDs in iDVD. I have confirmed that the drive works Ok by creating a small project of a few slides in iMovie, and burning it successfully in iDVD.
I have created a 20 minute project in Final Cut Express HD (3.0.1) from DV imported direct from the camera and edited. This was exported as a Quicktime movie both as a reference movie and a self contained movie, with and without chapter markers. These were imported into iDVD and burns attempted.
At the end I got the message ‘Burning finished - Errors were found during the burning procees, The error #-34506 was reported’. The disc was ejected untouched. Occasionally I get a message ‘Multiplexer error’
I’ve tried various suggestions on the discussions pages such as dumping the cache folder (manually and using Onyx), iDVD plist, repairing permissions and restarting, but to no avail. I’ve tried creating a disk image in iDVD but get the same error code.
I use the same process at work on an old 800MHz iMac quite successfully. The only differences are the iMacs and the fact that I use Final Cut Pro at work. I’m puzzled.

    iMac 20" 2.1GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.5Gb DDR2 SDRAM

This is the most promising thread on the 34506 error for some time, but could do with some fleshing out...
How should a iMovie/iDVD user go about deinterlacing a project?
I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to burn a number of slideshows to DVD with the following workflow:
    1) 12 slideshows created as individual iMovie projects and output as full quality Quicktime.
    2) Final iMovie project made by importing all 12 Quicktime files. Chapter markers placed at the start of each section (except at the very beginning).
    3) Sent to iDVD using the iDVD button in iMovie. Theme and menu pictures added.
    4) Create a disk image.
Obviously step 4) doesn't work right now (34506 error), although I can preview the final product in iDVD just great.
If I follow the way the latest threads are going, I should like to add a step between 1) and 2) to deinterlace the Quicktime movies and possibly change the output quality in 1). How should I do this and what programs should I use to get a good looking result?
Just to explain a bit about why I am using the workflow above: my project involves more than 1000 photos with transitions between each. My first attempted iMovie project used all the photos in one big project but iMovie became pretty slow and kept crashing. Splitting the show into smaller sections (~5-10 minutes running time each) alleviated the speed and reliability problems in iMovie but I wanted the option of viewing all the slide shows together as a single movie, hence the conversion to Quicktime files which I could easily handle in iMovie.
I noticed some time ago that if I output each of the 12 smaller projects as DV quality Quicktime rather than Full quality I could complete my workflow and produce a final DVD. The problem was that the resulting picture quality was awful when viewed on a TV, with a very low resolution. Some of the individual Full quality Quicktime movies can be written to disk through iMovie/iDVD as described above and the resulting disk looks great on TV - I just can't put all the movies together. I guess I could laboriously go through and work out which individual JPGs are causing the 34506 error by repeatedly dividing the movies but it would be far better if there was a single step that could be applied to every movie which fixes the problem - and deinterlacing may be that step.
Sorry for the long post, but I hope someone can help!

Some strange issues with Magic iDVD. If I click the Magic iDVD button on the iDVD start window the window closes and no project comes up, if I go and Quit iDVD the window appears and asks me to save project *Magic iDVD*.idvdproj. Now if I open iDVD create a blank project close the project then click magic iDVD it works with no problems. Anyone have any ideas?

    Its somehow related to:

You should also remove the iDVD folder in /home/Library/Application Support/

  • Imovie - idvd 5

I have just recently switched from windows to the mac mainly on the fact cos the Imovie/Idvd in ilife 05.
But, when i create a movie in "I movie" the click the "idvd" button to encode it over to "idvd", the "idvd" screen comes up fine with the new movie in there but in the status box it just dont decode at all???
Sorry for being so simple, but i am trying to get my head around all this!
    Please help

but in the status box it just dont decode at all???
    Hi Grant,
iDVD has 2 encoder modes: "Best Performance" has an option to encode it in background, given time you movie will eventually encoded. The other mode, "Best Quality" will only start encoding when you "burn" or "save as disk image" your project. Encoding takes a lot of times and processor power, it does not complete in a flash.

  • "Drag" iMovie into iDVD

Not being a Mac Expert, Ken Tidwell strongly suggests NOT using the 'create iDVD Project' button in iMovie 5 but:
If you share/export/save your movie to a folder on your harddrive instead, then use the Finder to drag into an iDVD project (or the add asset menus, etc.), QT will handle the rendering, providing a slightly more efficient level of encoding and better final results.
Quick lesson needed on what he means by dragging the iMovie into an iDVD project. OK, I have my iMovie in a folder on my internal drive. Which 'file' do I drag and deposit where? Do I open iDVD? I guess I'll need a little Finder 101. Thanks.

    Chuck,
I've had no troubles using the iDVD button in iMovie HD.
    Dragging:
Open the folder that holds your iMovie HD project. Just drag the project into the Menu in iDVD. That should work. Not to a drop zone.
Prior to iMovie HD, you could export (Share) from iMovie and retain the chapter markers, but this is the only way to retain them other than "sending" to iDVD.

  • Iphoto to imovie to idvd should work right?

After importing my photos and little AVI movies from my Canon digital camera to iphoto, I decided to make a slightly cooler DVD by adding more transitions, chapter titles, video and sound effects. So I imported them into imovie. Everything looked great and I pushed the create idvd button. I made cool menus and dropped slides into the right menus and drop zones etc. Previews played back fine. I was ready to burn. That was three days ago!!! Four successive attempts to burn the DVD failed.
First a multiplexing problem. I seemed to fix that by taking stuff off my startup disc. Keeping 26 gigs did the trick.
Then there was this burning error that I still cannot figure out.
I tested my burner first by taking one of the mini movies from my imovie and burned a DVD in the finder. It burned fine. The file I burned just could not open! I keep getting the following quicktime error: my "quicktime.mp4 contains invalid MPEG-4 audio, see below....An audio elementary stream descriptor is corrupted. Expected type=0X65736473 ('esds');found type=0X000000001 instead"
I have considered taking each movie I imported from iphoto and converting it with my Quicktime Pro (to what I'm not sure yet) and then putting it back into imovie and then IDVD once again. Also, I have considered starting over with iphoto again. This time importing them from imovie directly rather than exporting them from iphoto and then importing them into imovie. (By the way should the frames be black in the timeline? Only the movies are visible. They all play fine on the viewer but for some reason that does not seem right.
Anyway, shouldn't iMovie be converting ANY movie imported from iPhoto into a format that iDVD understands? Also, if everything previews fine in IDVD, shouldn't it be burning fine too? I mean these programs are suppose to be seamless right?
I have the option of omitting iphoto and i movie altogether by importing the pictures and movies into FCE2 and then burning it in toast. Is that an easier solution? Is there any formula to get the best DVD from digital photos and movies from a digital camera? Anyway, any ideas and thoughts would be most welcome.

I ended up re doing the entire project again. This time though I cropped the photos in iphoto first then exported them as dv files to imovie. This seems to have worked though I was very disappointed with the performance of Imovie and idvd. The transitions between photos in idvd sometimes were yellow particularly the one that the picture shrinks and fades away. Also the pictures seem to be perfectly clear then turn fuzzy. This seems to be a change from earlier versions of the program. I am going to experiment with importing photos info fce2 and directly into idvd. it may be that imovie and idvd are just inferior programs to something like fce2 or dvd studio pro. Good luck
    Theo
