IDVD cannot use full capacity of a DVD

This is sort of a pet peeve. On single-layer project, it tells me I have 4.0GB of space to work with, and this actually means 4.0 billion bytes, not 4.0GiB. Same with double-layer project: it shows 8.0GB of space, which is roughly 7.5GiB. A double-layer DVD+R can hold 8.5GB, or 8.0GiB. There's basically about 500MB of unused space on a double-layer project, and that's like 15 minutes of extra footage right there. With single-layer, the discrepancy is even bigger at around 700MB.
Now, is there a way to 'nudge' iDVD5 to increase the 'maximum space'? It would be nice to actually have something useful in there.

Haha, I'm quite good, but it's when these capacity unit conflicts actually cause me to either waste space or provide less space than anticipated that gets me really want to flare up like one of those highly unstable Dragonball characters.
Well, Apple could've simply used the 'not-1024-kilo' GB number to show up on iDVD because... that's the same unit that the actual blank DVDs have printed on. That's not really my concern, but rather, the 500 or 700MB of space that could be used for more video, yet due to the software limitation, cannot, is the root of the peeve. I was only using the GB/GiB notation to clarify how much space I was talking about.
Maybe I need to hack the binary or something?

Time Capsule Not Using Full Capacity

Good morning. I have a 1tb Time Capsule and use Time Machine to backup my iMac and my son's MBP.
The Time Machine backup is reporting that 235gb of 998gb is available. But it's been "stuck" at about 235gb for weeks. It seems as if the system is not using all available capacity. Is this normal?
I should note that at one time I had miscellaneous folders and files on the Time Capsule (from a PC). Would those miscellaneous files have somehow "blocked" access to the rest of the free space? I have removed those misc files, but still not seeing the system use my full drive capacity.
Any ideas how to get the system to use the rest of the drive?

The Time Capsule is reporting on the space that backups are using on the drive. Backups are stored in a special container called a sparsebundle file.
Sparsebundles behave differently than normal files. The sparsefundle expands as more data is added.But, it behaves differently when files are deleted.
So, lets say that the sparsebundle is up to 100 GB. Now, you delete 10 GB from your backups beasue you don't need the files any longer. So, you think you should see 90 GB now.
The sparsebundlw will still show as a 100 GB. It will begin to "grow" again when more than 100 GB is present.

Here is a list of the ports that needs to be unblocked. Hopefully this will help.

Flash player not using full capacity. (11.7/8)

I have been attempting to play an extremely resource-heavy flash game: Madness: Project Nexus. I have a gaming computer with a 670M GTX gpu and a i7 Quad Core 2.7 Ghz, with 12GB of DDR3 RAM. OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. Browser is Firefox Aurora 23.0 Alpha 2. Exact Flash Player version is 11.7.700.224.
However, flash player doesn't use enough of the processor or the RAM. At most, I've only experienced a 30% RAM and a 25% processor usage. How would I increase the parameters to allocate upwards of 8GB of RAM and 100% max processor usage for Adobe Flash?
It isn't the computer slowing me down; Flash player doesn't use enough of it. That's why I need help.

First thing to check: do you have the "kill-bit" for Flash Player set (e.g. by some malware): http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
If you have, don't fix it manually (unless you are very confident using the Registry Editor); just post back, and someone will post an easy way to remove that "kill-bit".

Canon HFS 10 log & transfer not using full capacity of camera

I hope someone can help.
Just bought a Canon HFS10 AVCHD handycam that boasts it records at 24 Mbps but when using log and transfer the clips are only recording around 10 to 13 Mbps.
There doesn't appear to be an option in 'Log and Transfer' to up the rate.
How do I get Final Cut Express to take up video from the camera at 24MBps?

The basic idea is that Canon boasts it captures at 24mBps, but is actually a variable bit rate and uses whatever rate it needs when capturing. As such, the data rate upon ingest would be the rate it captured at. There is no way to change the data rate within FCE, this solely depends on how the camera captured. 24mBps is probably the maximum data rate the camera has achieved in tests.

If you want set top DVD player playback, I suggest you create a a series of slideshows IN iDVD that each contain a MAXIMUM of 99 images. Do not create the slideshow in iPhoto or iMovie.
Is there an easier way to do this, bypassing iDVD?

How did you create the slideshow and get it in iDVD?
As a general comment try following this workflow to separate the encoding and burning processes:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

The blog was incorrect. Photomerge should work in the trial, too.

Using IDVD can I make a playable video DVD then add a folder of jpeg photos on the same Disc?

I'm able to make DVDs from iPhoto or IMovie & I've mastered IDVD's Menus pretty well. The DVDs play ok in DVD players to that's a plus. Now, what I want to do is somehow put folders of photos .... mainly those I've used in the slideshows...... if possible, on the same DVD. The idea is I can gift a DVD with a video/slideshow & if the recipient wants the photos they can insert DVD disc into their own computer (not necessarily Apple) & download the photos. Can this be done?

Toast probably maintains better quality if you are just doing simple conversion direct from your camera straight into Toast and then to DVD. There's a lot less transcoding steps and loss of quality in that direct to DVD disk creation in Toast. However, having said that,...There's good arguments probably for both.
What I've seen promoted most often (as most people don't have Toast or aren't motivated to buy it) is to Share to Media Browser (choose the Large size option) and then from inside iDVD click the Media Button and the Movies button to find the project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. Drag that project into your iDVD project and burn the disk.
