IDVD changing 16:9 PAL to 4:3 when burning

Hi there
I have some 16:9 footage which I export from iMovie 08 as a Quicktime Movie using Apple Intermediate Codec as PAL 720 x 576.
I bring that footage into a 16:9 iDVD PAL project.
But when I save the project as a VIDEO_TS folder and open it in DVDPlayer, the main menu screen is 16:9 but the actual movie is pillar-boxed and not in 16:9.
If I import the iMovie footage into iDVD via the Media Browser, all is fine.
Any clues on this would be appreciated - why is iDVD treating the PAL 16:9 AIC differently?

Just a guess but I suspect iDvd's media browser helps prep most added media files so that they are more palatable to iDvd.
Apple's DVD Player app on the other hand is a different app altogether. It's apple's playback software. Normally, it's very dependable but it may or may not see certain embedded flags for 16:9 as opposed to 4:3.
If this is the case then, an alternate test for this media is apple's QT Player/better yet ... QT Pro. If the flags aren't seen here then there's a problem....
Suggest you take a look at JES Deinterlacer which can convert NTSC<->PAL with much better quality than converting with iDVD, iMovie or QuickTime Player Pro.

  • How come my 16:9 iDVD 06 project plays as 4x3 on iMac when burned?

    Hi.
    Warning: This is a question from a newbie.
    I recorded a digital TV show with EyeTVTV and made a DVD out of it using iDVD 06. The show was 16:9. The iDVD project was 16:9. Everything was fine when I previewed the project in iDVD (both menus and show were 16:9 - looked cool). I then burned it to a DVD using iDVD which about 2 years. When I put the burned DVD into my iMac, I get 16:9 menus but the show itself is 4x3 with long faces and black bars on the sides of the screen.
    Any ideas what I did wrong?
    Thanks,
    Adnan

    Hi Ian Parkinson and drogersgolf.
    I have the exact same problem, but changing the aspect ratio of the TV to 4:3 doesn't help! The video is still cropped on both sides.
    I hope someone can help to prevent this problem from occurring in iDVD!
    Thank you in advance!

  • Idvd not keeping aspect ratio when burning dvd

    Ok, what I am doing is creating the project in Final Cut, exporting using quicktime conversion (everything up to this point is 16:9) then I go to iDVD and what I need is a dvd that has no menus at the front or the end of the project, and it plays upon start. So I go to iDVD >file>onestep DVD from movie>select movie then insert dvd and it burns, But it burns it as 4:3, not the 16:9 I saved it as. I see nowhere to change this setting. Am I limited to only doing 4:3 projects with this type of dvd?

    I'm very surprised that if you followed the references I gave you, you are still having problems.
    Another solution is to use something called Anamorphizer that sets the file's widescreen flag so that it is recognized as anamorphically squeezed widescreen.
    Get Anamorphizer at http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
    Make sure Quicktime 7 is open before you try Anamorphizer. (NOTE: You MUST use Quicktime 7 and NOT Quicktime X)
    Place a copy of your movie clip in a new folder and drag that clip over the Anamorphizer icon. This should create a second file in that folder that start with Anamorphic- This is the reference movie you drag-and-drop into iDVD. Note that your clip in that folder (which is the movie the reference movie points to, must not be moved or deleted).
    What I do is air projects on our local school board channel and just realized that idvd changes my 16:9 to 4:3 when doing the idvd> file>one step dvd from movie option.
    BTW, how does the DVD play in your computer? There may be an issue with the school board channel playback.

  • Does iDVD actually convert NTSC/PAL?

    I was just dozing on the bed and had a moment of clarity...
    Well, I've recently got a new iMac and got into this DVD thing I shoot movies of my family and send them back home on DVD. I'm in Japan (NTSC) and the family's back in England (PAL). My camera and iMac are all Japanese-bought.
    I put my movies into iMovie then iDVD. I've made 3 or 4 movies so far. What I've been doing is rather troublesome, actually, but I've put the movies through to iDVD twice. The first time with iDVD preferences set to NTSC (my copy), then set to PAL (family's copy). This requires setting up the DVD menus, etc., twice in iDVD. Well, it's two completely different projects. A drag. Intuitively I feel this is wrong or unneccessary, so part of my query is whether this is necessary?
    I've only had feedback on one movie so far - the first one. For that one I sent both an NTSC and PAL version back to see which worked or were better, etc., as I don't really understand the technology yet. Now according to my brother there was no difference between them (obviously he can play NTSC on his PAL player).
    I've made a few more and sent PAL for the simple reason that England is a PAL country...
    Then this 'moment of clarity' I just had was: that option in iDVD to set between NTSC and PAL, is that only to reflect the original tape and NOT to convert?? Have I, in fact, been sending NTSC DVDs only?? Or does it tell iDVD to convert to PAL when I send it an NTSC iMovie?
    If it DOESN'T convert, that would explain why both were the same on my brother's player. In that case, does that mean I can only send inferior quality DVDs (I'm assuming PAL plays better than NTSC on a PAL player)?
    On the other hand, the fact that they appear the same could be simply that the quality of both is not so good (the movies are just under an hour, with transitions and a little music).
    Sorry, bit rambling, but I have a lot to learn, especially if I want to ensure my family get a good record of our lives here.
    I remember when digital watches and calculators first became available. That was the height of technology. People were happier then...
    Thanks in advance for any info and advice.
    James
    PS please reply as to an idiot

    IDVD uses different templates depending on which format you choose. PAL and NTSC are different formats, not only in frame size, but color resolution, and frame rate.
    Yes, PAL is superior to NTSC. However, some regions of the world can only play NTSC, others PAL... some can play both formats.
    You must specify the format BEFORE starting a new iDVD project because you can change that setting over and over again after having started a project and it will actually only use the setting that it was set to when the new project was started. As in, change your video standard preference, then File > New... not the other way around.
    As for transcoding... many apps do transcode, but by mistake, not by design. What I mean is, if you take NTSC footage (720x480 29.97 FPS Non-square pixels) and tell it to output it as PAL footage (720x576 25 FPS Square pixels), it will. It will convert it by stretching the pixels vertically and reducing the frame rate. Most may not even be able to notice the difference, especially when viewed on an analog device such as a TV... it might be more apparent on a digital device such as a computer. Another example would be to take a 320x240 Quicktime move and then add it to iDVD directly. It will stretch the content to fit the format that you have chosen. Now there is a drastic change in viewing quality because there was a drastic change in frame size. PAL and NTSC are quite close to one another by comparison.
    All in all, you should shoot in PAL if you wish to output PAL DVDs and conversely shoot in NTSC if you wish to output NTSC DVDs. This will result in the best outcome.
    NTSC is jokingly referred to as Never Twice the Same Color... meaning that NTSC has some of the worst color rendering out there. It is one of the primary reasons why the U.S. is FINALLY switching to HD... to say goodbye to the archaic format that has existed in the U.S. for well over 50 years. PAL too is going away. Cheer the arrival of HD... it is superior to both PAL and NTSC on a grand scale.

  • IDVD changed the order of photos imported from Aperture

    I created a project in Aperture from two different camera inputs. One had EDT and the other had PDT. I didn't think to make them the same time zone. After putting the combined photos in the order I wanted, I called the Aperture file from iDVD to create the slide show. IDVD changed the order. I am not sure what piece of Meta data it looked at to create its order. I had to go back into iDVD and recreate the order I wanted.
    How does iDVD decide which order when the file has a mix of photos not from the same camera?
    Thanks

    Good question and frankly I don't know the answer.

    I can see the weak jerkiness when panning in both laterally
    and vertically.
    I shoot with a camcorder Canon Vixia HF10. The camera has been set to deliver HD quality (1920x1080). But I have accidentally filmed with a frame rate of 60 (?).
    When I import the films in iMovie I have been asked if I want to change to frame rate 30 (instead of 25). I have chosen 30.
    Could it be the setting of a frame rate 60 in my camcorder that causes jerkiness when panning or what else?

  • I had to change my apple ID and password.  When I want to update my aps. on my I phone 4S I get a box that says I need to sign in to I tunes.  It has my old apple ID and I can't find any way on my phone to change the address it has in the box.  Help!!

    Because of a nasty virus on my computer I had to change my apple ID and password.  When I went to update my apps. on my I phone 4s the box said I need to sign in to I tunes.  The ID it had in the box was my old apple ID and I can't remember the password.  I can't find any where in my phone settings that will let me change my I tunes ID although I have a new apple ID and password that I used to get on this site but I can't change it on my phone.  Please help.
    Thanks

    ChrisJ4203,
    Thank you for the help.  Every app on my phone was downloaded using my old I-tunes ID.  I just hope that they will re-download under my new ID because I still can't change it on my phone.  In order to change to the new ID it says I have to sign out from the old ID and change to the new one.  My problem is that I don't remember my password to be able to sign out from my old ID.  Then the phone says it can change my password through e-mail and I  agree but I never get an e-mail at my old address or the new one.

  • I see there is no way to change the security questions i set up when I first purchased my ipod touch. Software takes you in circles with no help

    I see there is no way to change the security questions i set up when I first purchased my ipod touch. All the answers I get do not work. Can't by another device until I get around this issue.

    Reset Security Questions
    Frequently asked questions about Apple ID
    Manage My Apple ID
    Or you can email iTunes Support at iTunes Store Support.
    If all else fails:
      1. Go to: Apple Express Lane;
      2. Under Product Categories choose iTunes;
      3. Then choose iTunes Store;
      4. Then choose Account Management;
      5. Now choose iTunes Store Security and answer the bullet questions, then click
          Continue;
      6. Sign in with your Apple ID and press Continue;
      7. Under Contact Options fill out the information and advise iTunes that you would
          like your security/challenge questions reset;
      8. Click Send/Continue.
    You should get a response within 24 hours by email.
    In the event you are unsuccessful then contact AppleCare - Contacting Apple for support and service.
    Another user had success doing the following:
    I got some help from an apple assistant on the phone. It is kind of round about way to get in.
    Here is what he said to do and it is working for me...
      a. on the device that is asking you for the security questions go to "settings", > "store" >
          tap the Apple ID and choose view"Apple ID" and sign in.
      b. Tap on payment information and add a credit/debit card of your preference then select
          "done", in the upper right corner
      c. sign out and back into iTunes on the device by going to "settings"> "store" > tap the
          Apple ID and choose "sign-out" > Tap "sign -in" > "use existing Apple ID" and you
          should be asked to verify your security code for the credit /debit card and NOT the
          security questions.
      d. At this time you can remove the card by going back in to edit the payment info and
          selecting "none" as the card type then saving the changes by selecting "done". You
          should now be able to use your iTunes store credit without answering the security
          questions.
    It's working for me ...I just have to put in my 3 digit security pin from the credit card I am using.
    Good Luck friends!

    Is there a way to change the writing speed when burning CD-R's?
    I don't see any options in Disk Utility.
    Rob
    P.S. Since I am burning coasters lately with the Pioneer DVR-111D, I though that I might solve the problem by using a lower write speed.

    I dn't believe so with Disk Utility although you can with Roxio Toast Titanium. I would try another media brand, like Verbatim, as a first step and see if the coaster problem goes away.

  • How do I change the font size of a document when I PRINT?

    How to I change the font size of a document when I print it?

    To specifically and fully answer your question, no, you absolutely cannot change the “font size” as a function of print.
    First of all, there isn't a single “font size” associated with a PDF file (and we assume you are referring to a PDF file since this is an Acrobat forum).
    Secondly, PDF is a final form file format meaning that the content is static in terms of location, size, etc. on the page. To change the point size of any particular text, you really need to go back to the source document and make the changes there.
