IDVD Chapter Buttons

Hi Everyone! I've breifly looked through the forum, but can't quite find the answer to my question. Occasionally I run into a problem w/my chapter buttons. I've been making several photo slideshows, loading them into IMovie w/chapter buttons, exporting to IDVD, creating my menu then savings as a disc image to burn w/toast (I find burning in IDVD, they don't always play on the DVD players). Anyway, when you arrow through your menu you may only get one or two chapters that will highlight and the rest you can't access. Any suggestions? THANKS!

These DVDs that I had already burned I need to somehow export the video (from the DVD), I do not have the original files on my mac any longer.
If it's an iDVD you authored/burned to disc and it resides on standard DVD-R media you have 2 options:
1. You can use a standard DVD Player and connect the analog outputs to a mini dv camcorder's input as an interface with pass thru feature to FW > Mac > i-movie.
2. You can use something like:

There is less quality loss with option one. Hope this is Helpful and good luck.

  • FINAL CUT PRO and iDVD CHAPTER BUTTONS MIXED-UP

    Hello to all,
I have finished this project that's 113 minutes long in FCP 5.0.4, and have successfully burned a disc. I had exported the Quicktime compression (along with 48 chapters) to iDVD 08 (I do not have DVD Pro).
I used the sunflower template and all went well, but unfortunately, I made a blunder in the scrolling titles and chapter locations, and had to go back and do it all again! So, I started a new iDVD project and have been through another 11 hour encode.
+"Everything burned OK the second time, with the exception of some of the chapter menu buttons."+
For some reason - four out of seven pages (meaning their chapter buttons) are mixed up. If you navigate down, it goes up, if you navigate right - it goes down, and so on and so forth.
Three page buttons are just fine.
Any quick enlightenment, would be appreciated. I'm trying to finish this project to burn a few dozen discs for the client by wed.
    Thanks to all input!

    Hi,
Well, that's right, but since I had a previous question and response concerning chapter markers in FCP using iDVD, they were answered by Redtruck and a host of others users. This new problem I'm having, I thought, might actually have it's possible roots with FCP, since thats where the markers were fist laid down. But, I'm probably wrong about that.
I will go ahead and post in iDVD.
    Thanks much!

  • Adding 7th Chapter Button

    Hello,
I created a series of slideshows in iDVD, each of which is represented by a chapter button on the menu. I know that I'm supposed to be able to have up to twelve chapters, but when I go to add the 7th button (there will be 7 or 8 slideshows total), it simply gets added to the first and only chapter menu, and crowds the menu. What I would like to have is the little arrow button that will take you from Chapters 1-6 on the first page, to Chapters 7-8 on the second page, and then the second page would have an arrow to take you back to the first page.
In other words, shouldn't iDVD automatically create a second chapter menu page when I add the 6th, 7th & 8th chapter (slideshow) buttons, rather than cramming them all into one page? I'm using the "Shelves" theme and the shelves only hold three buttons each (six per page).
    Thanks for your help.

iDVD6 doesn't deal well with overload. It's a consumer app. As such it has presumed settings and calculations. It can't be all things to all people .... no way.
On the other hand, as your stated your objective:
What I would like to have is the little arrow button that will take you from Chapters 1-6 on the first page, to Chapters 7-8 on the second page, and then the second page would have an arrow to take you back to the first page.
I can do this no problem within DVDSP .....works like a charm!

  • Chapter Buttons Select the Wrong Chapter

The movie was made with iMovie 06. I set the 6 chapters in IMovie 06 (about one hour long).
I then shared the movie with iDVD 08 and tested the movie using 'Preview DVD Playback'.
No matter which of the 6 chapter buttons I click on, the movie always goes to chapter 2.
Pressing play from the main menu does start the movie from the beginning.
In looking at the logic tree, my chapters appear to be in the correct order.
I have made several movies with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 without difficulty. I have not updated any software since using iDVD 08 successfully in the past.
    Any advice is appreciated.

  • Editing access sequencing between chapter buttons

The theme I am using has a default of 6 chapter buttons per submenu. I have 37 chapters, so I am interested in reducing the number of submenus required to navigate to all 37 chapter buttons.
I used the "Map" view to drag/drop 4 chapter buttons from submenu 2 up to submenu 1, resulting in 10 chapter buttons on submenu 1. (I stopped at 10 because iDVD issued an error message that 12 buttons was the max per menu screen ... 10 chapter buttons + next submenu + prev submenu = 12)
I drag/dropped 6 chapter buttons from submenu 3 up to submenu 2, and 2 chapter buttons from submenu 4 up to submenu 2, resulting in 10 chapter buttons on submenu 2. ... etc.
After arranging the 10 buttons into logic order on the submenu screen, I was happy with the look. However, when the dvd is burned, the dvd player's remote control is not able to logically select the chapter buttons. Using left/right sequence in subgroups of 3 or 4 or 5; up/down may jump to a different subgroup of buttons. Very nonsensical for an normal user.
Is there a way to edit the details of each chapter button to specify where to go depending upon which remote button (left/right/up/down) is pressed next?

In short, no. There is no way to set the order of the chapters for selection with a remote for a DVD player. All remotes do not work the same way, so even if you 'fixed' the sequencing for yours, it probably wouldn't work on another player. My DVD chapters seem to order differently on the two main DVD players I use at home. One seems to always want to jump to the navigation arrows before going to all the chapters.
I often do what you do to get a few more chapters per submenu. Depending on the theme (if you use one), the sequence of chapters can be top to bottom or left to right. Some themes will not permit more than 8 chapters per submenu. But even with just the default submenu number of chapters, I still find that I cannot always get to each chapter in order using my remote.
I have taken to numbering each chapter so that even if the remote doesn't go to the next correct one, I can easily see which one I want by its number.

  • Chapter buttons do not behave alike-how to correct?

    Hello,
I have an iDVD ('08) project with 6 chapters. Everything seemed to be set up automatically, but when I mouse/click/use remote, two of the chapter buttons are different.
Text buttons- most of them change color when moused over, etc. Two of them don't- instead a small box appears to the left of the text.
I clicked the info pane, but can't figure out how to make all the buttons behave alike. How can I change this?

I figured it out- Advanced --> Reset object to theme settings- made all the buttons uniform.

  • Subtle iDVD bug - buttons don't stick

I have found a subtle bug in iDVD6.0.3.
If you manually place the inter-menu arrow navigation buttons, save, then later re-open your iDVD project and "update" it because you have edited the underlying iMovie project inbetween, the inter-menu arrow navigation buttons return to their default position for whatever theme you've used. They don't stick in your manually placed position. All chapter buttons stay in the right spots, manually placed or otherwise.
There is nothing you can do to stop this happening.
Not a fatal bug, but annoying enough.

Not exactly sure why this sometimes happens. I find that if I don't quit the application then I'm ok. However sometimes after quitting and saving and reopening these buttons do return to their default positions.
Go ahead and try this: drag and drop the plist for iDVD to the trash.
Quit iDVD. Locate a file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and get rid of it. iDVD will create a new one the next time it runs. Empty the trash and restart if needed.

  • Editing chapter buttons problem

    Hi
I'm trying to alter the font and size of the text for my chapter buttons on my submenu. I single click to select the button I want, and then click again but it keeps taking me into the movie instead of highlighting the text! I know this should work as I've done it before - are there any tips in how to do this successfully or another way of doing it?
    Many thanks
    Ian

You don't need to highlight the text to change size and font. Click once on the button to select it, and then open the buttons panel to change font and size.
You need to click twice on the button if you want to edit text content, but wait a few seconds between clicks.

  • IMovie "Create iDVD Project" Button Opens Previous, not Current Movie/Proj

I updated my non-Intel iMac to Leopard a year or so ago. Since then, my wife says when she works on a project in iMovie and is done she clicks on Create iDVD Project button and when iDVD opens it opens the last movie she was working on (over a year ago) before we upgraded to Leopard. iDVD does not open the movie that she is currently working on in iMovie. This worked before we switched to Leopard. I have 10.5, iDVD 5 & iMovie 5. Is this a compatibility issue with Leopard? She told me about this when we switched to Leopard but I ignored her. Now I have to find the answer.

I have seen report that iMovie 5 won't even run under Leopard.
What you might try is avoid clicking on the "Create iDVD project" button in iMovie. Instead you save the project and quit iMovie. Launch iDVD, create a new project and drag the iMovie project from the Finder into the iDVD window.

  • Simulator Play/Stop/Forward chapter buttons

This is probably the easiest of questions, figuring as such since I searched the forums and I don't see anything on it. I am new to DVDSP and can kind of find my way around, but need help on some things.
I have a movie I have exported out of FCP with chapter markers as an m2v file with sound as ac3. Placed in DVDSP and then pointed each text item on the menu to go to the chapters and they work however when I use the Simulator, the play, stop, forward and back chapter buttons don't work.

    Answered.

  • Next-chapter button behavior at the end of a track

This is probably a silly question.
When the DVD is on the last chapter of a track, from then on I want next-chapter button to return the user to the menu screen. When I don't do anything special to the settings, DVDSP's simulation does nothing when I press the next-chapter button. But when I play the DVD back on a set-top player, pressing next-chapter begins playing a seemingly random other track. That's certainly not what I want.
How can I set the next-chapter button to return to the menu?

Press F3 to get to advanced layout
    Go to Outline View
    Highlight Track
Click Connections Tab in the main window (menu/viewer/connections)
You can set the next jump there (same for chapter) but not all players behave the same. Stories with a "dummy marker" which disables all user controls briefly seems to stop most of the players from jumping

  • Automatic chapter button

After I have imported a timeline into a project, it automatically gives me a chapter marker on the timeline, roughly, two seconds into the project. When this happens, the videos, obviously, start from that very first chapter marker.
The problem is that I obviously want the video to start from 00:00 on the timeline rather than from the first chapter.
My means of curtailing this problem is by simply dragging that first chapter button all the way to the left at 00:00.
My question is this: Is there anywhere in the settings that will keep from this chapter button from showing up two seconds on the timeline? Is there something in the preferences or the presets, perhaps, I can change to curtail this small problem? This way, I can import the timeline without having to worry about dragging the chapter marker to 00:00 on the timeline.

You have no direct control over the automatic generation of this poster frame - this is done so that if you link to a video thumbnail button, the video in the button won't be a black frame (and it's only generated if the chapter is in black). However, as I said, this will not affect where the chapter begins...playback will always start from the chapter, not the poster frame.
If you don't like the auto-generated poster frame, either drag it to a frame you like, or delete it (drag it back to the chapter).

  • Chapter button highlighting?

I have made a menu in DVD studio pro with 3 different chapters for my video, and I have the buttons made for the chapters, and everything assigned correctly, but I cannot get the buttons for the chapters to highlight, or show any indication that they are selected in the simulator. The highlight option under the "colors" tab doesnt seem to work. How do I get the different chapter buttons to highlight or indicate when they are selected or activated?

Well, I guess you didn't try everything then dija? :P
Hit F3 on your keyboard, the Inspoector will be the window in the bottom right of the screen. It gives you all the info and settings of your menus, tracks, media, etc. etc. etc. etc.
Not for nothing, but check out the manual or online help. There's a bit of info you need to know to create your own highlights, I don't have the energy to type all that up right now! Some it can be a little tricky on the Photoshop end....read it, learn it, love it.
Long story short--you need to create a specific file that DVDSP will look at to show what is highlighted, it can be type, graphical, whatever. When this graphic is created, it will be set for the Menu when the menu is available in the Inspector at the bottom of the General tab.
    Good luck.

  • Exporting "Selected Clips" and iDVD Chapter Markers from iMovie

I've tried exporting "selected clips" from iMovie . The iDVD Chapter Markers do not appear as a menu option on the initial iDVD menu screen when "selected clips" is checked in the iMovie Share option. The chapter markers are limited to the clips I'm exporting. The "Share" dialog box seems to indicate that Chapter Markers should export but they don't. // I'm trying to break up a movie that's too long for a DVD (but I will later share to video from iMovie). I'd prefer not to make two iMovie projects out of this. Thanks!

    Hello, John,
    Welcome to the discussions.
You can either do your 'share to video from iMovie' before or after creating your iDVDs. But, you will need to create a second iMovie if yours is too long for one DVD and you are wanting to make 2 DVDs from the one long movie.
To make the second one before sharing the entire movie:
Select the clips you want in the second movie, then go to 'Edit' and 'Copy'.
Then, select 'New' iMovie. When it opens, give it a name like "Part2" and then 'Paste' your selected clips. Save the movie, then go back to the first one. Delete the clips you just copied.
Close iMovie. Open your DVD project. Find the 'Media' tab, go to 'Movies' and drag and drop your first movie into iDVD. Finish the iDVD project. Save and close.
Then, create the second iDVD project for your second movie in the same way.
Do 'save as disk image' for each iDVD project. That way your project is intact for each one, and you will not lose anything when you change the iMovies. You can burn your DVDs from the disk images.
Now, go back to your second iMovie. Select the clips and copy. Close that movie and open the first one. Paste the second set of clips. Now you have your original movie back and can do your share to video from it. Delete the second movie.

  • IDVD menu buttons missing

When I open the theme menu pages neither the "Play Film" or "Scene Selection" buttons appear. Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions? I've looked through the basic help pages and David Pogues iMovie&iDVD book. Nada...
Is there any way to add these two buttons? I understand that they're supposed to be on every theme menu page.
Sorry if the answer is self evident.....
    C.

You have to add an iMovie HD movie with chapter markers to the main menu to created those. Every Theme menu is empty until you add something.
