IDVD crashes after burning a DVD

iDVD is crashing almost every time it completes a DVD. These are long DVD's, but the status screen tells me I'm at 3.9 out of 4GB, so it should be okay. Over 35 GB available on the hard drive.
I'm seeing this problem elsewhere on this board. Is anybody having this problem using a prior OS? Comments made indicate the problem may be specific to 10.4.3.
I'm open to suggestions.

Try using the Easter Egg workaround to burn a disc image which can then be burnt to a DVD-R using Disk Utility.
It is also called "Hurz and Pfurz", and is available as a free download from
http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/0015-burn_idvdother.html
iDVD5 has this built in.
I also suggest you get another free download Mac Sweeper which you will find on http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Mac-Sweeper.shtml
Now I would recommend the following steps but first make sure there is about 20GB free on the internal HD then:
1) Shut down/Restart without any applications running.
2) Run Mac Sweeper carrying out all the optimize options including repair permissions and, under clean, empty caches.
3) Launch iDVD and the project
4) "Burn" a copy to disc to hard disc using the Easter Egg workaround.
5) Go to bed and have a good night's sleep.
6) When the run is finished (always for me 1 hour in less than 8 hours) examine the DVD image and play it using the DVD player in the applications folder
7) If and when satisfied and burn a copy using Disc Utility, full instructions on
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
but you just use the second half to burn the DVD.
This approach means you can readily produce multiple copies. I have taken to burning the DVD without any other applications running as I think too much going on may cause bad spots on the disc.

  • IDVD Crashes after making a DVD

I've never had this happen before until today.
I create a movie in iMovie (only about 10 minutes long) and burn a DVD in iDVD.
Everything goes okay and it spits out the first DVD no problem. Sometimes it even spits out a second one just fine. But always either on the second or third copy it ejects the DVD after only about 2 minutes and the entire machine locks up.
I can move the mouse around, but I get the spinning circle that will not stop.
    It is iLife4.
    Any ideas?

    Hi bbates,
I really have no idea why iDVD is crashing and the only thing I can recommend is to run a cache cleaner like Onyx. This usually sorts out burn errors.
If you save the iDVD project as a disc image (as recommended) and burn this via Toast or a burn folder you will not have this problem.
You should also post this question in the iDVD forum stating the version you are using if you want a more direct answer. This is the iMovie forum.

  • IDVD 6 (after burning) has "moving" parts in a still picture

I went to Israel in March. I came back with many, many pictures and all the audio clips from our tour guide. I have been putting together movies for the past month, night and day. I found out that working in iMovie, on a G5 dual 2.0 GHz (2 GB RAM) or MacBookPro w/1 GB RAM, it was best to leave the movie at about 57 minutes because the spinning beach ball appears too often if I didn't.
Between the 2nd DVD and the 3rd DVD I've had all sorts of problems. I am taking pictures from iphoto to iMovie (using Media Tab) and these are pictures as is. Nothing has been done to them. I then find the clip that matches the place we were and work with it as much as possible so the pictures match what the guide is talking about.
Once the 50+ minutes is done and iMovie starts slowing down, I share to iDVD, create my theme (usually using Pass Through, but I have tried others) and burn the DVD. It takes 3 hours on my G5.
The iMovie runs fine and the iDVD runs fine before burning. I DO NOT render in iMovie as I found the pictures were horrible (pixelated, etc.).
I then watch the movie to see that all is well. About 5 minutes into this 3rd one, the branches/leaves of the olive tree start to "move". Or the grass, or hair on a donkey, or rocks where it looks as if they are alive with tiny little moving piecses on the rock. More like a shaking or jiggling. Sometimes it will stop, other times it will continue and get worse until it's very pixelated.
Finally I thought it was the audio. I tried taking the audio, which was an aiff file, open into QT, and then export as AAC. I removed the areas I thought were causing the problems. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I booted into Panther and used the iLife 05 that I have.
I am now making a QT compression to see what that does. One iMovie/DVD I worked on for 12 solid nights after work and 1 entire weekend. Same result. Then I finally removed some of the audio (an Olympus digital recorder was used) and it worked for #2 DVD. Maybe a little "movement" but enough to scrape by.
Has anyone run across this before? Tonight I'm trying a different type of DVD. Memorex instead of Verbatim.

My motto with these projects: KISS. You are not doing that....
Tonight I'm trying a different type of DVD. Memorex instead of Verbatim.
I wouldn't do that. Verbatim DVD-R burned at 4X or slower is your best bet. If you create a disk image from iDVD, you can control the burn speed. See below.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Slideshow shaking after burning to DVD

I have created a DVD containing a video and a slideshow. After burning the DVD and dropping it into my DVD player (actually two different DVD players -- different ages / brands), I notice that while the video is steady and plays fine, I am getting shaking of slides in the slideshow. The shaking is slight, but very noticable. In fact, at times the shaking looks more like a slight bounce (up and down) of the slide, almost evenly spaced in time (i.e. every slide gets a slight bounce). I have tried burning another DVD (burn another), and now I'm starting the burning process from the beginning, so that the rendering can happen again.
I am burning off my Powerbook's superdrive. Has anyone experienced this, and/or do you have any ideas why this might be happening?
    Brad

TV - let's talk NTSC - sends one frame of information every 1/30 sec. To minimize flicker, each frame contains two fields of information that are interlaced and transmitted at 1/60 sec. In a moving image this eliminates the 1/30 sec flicker. You will see the interlacing when you make a screen capture of a video image with motion - items in motion will appear as 'teeth on a comb' because the two fields are time separated by 1/60 sec.
Now lets talk your still images. Lets say each image is displayed on your TV screen for 10 seconds. During that ten seconds, your screen is constantly switching back and forth between two separate field images. Every 1/30 sec a field (lets call it the even field) is displayed followed by a different field (lets call it the odd field) 1/60 sec later.
Keep in mind these two fields each represent 1/2 of your original image - or every other line of your image (that's why they are said to be interlaced).
If there in no fine detail, the even and odd fields will be the same - but if there IS fine detail, the two fields will be slightly different. Since they are slightly different (not noticable in area without shap detail) the eye will detect the flicker on a TV set that has interlacing. A computer display (usually) is not an interlaced display, so there is no flicker.
Note that THIS IS NOT A FAULT of iDVD! It's one of the problems of a system like NTSC video that uses interlaced video fields.
I had suggested slightly blurring your image - the point is to make the even and odd fields exactly the same so there will be no flicker.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - it is possible to have a still image that is too sharp on a DVD!
Note that if you eliminate the flicker on a TV set, the image will look slight soft on a computer monitor. Which is important to you - a TV set or a computer monitor?
    very strange.
No, it's not strange when you understand what's going on, is it?
BTW, digital images taken in low light level conditions can have lots of noise (that looks like film grain). This noise can REALLY make a TV image shimmer because there are major differences between the even and odd fields.

  • After burning a DVD one or more of the scenes wont play?

Adobe Premier 11 - After burning a DVD one or more of the scenes wont play, the scene is showing and highlights but wont play...this has only recently just started to happen. I thought it may have been the physical DVD disk issue, but have tried others and same thing is occuring?

Does iTunes let you burn CDs even though you have installed iTunes 8? There are many users - me included - who have lost the ability to burn CDs after we installed iTunes 8. I am curious to learn what may be different about your settings versus those of us who are being adversely impacted. Do you know what the UpperFilters and LowerFilters are in your registry for disc burning?
    Thank you.

  • IDVD crashes during burn process

Ok, I updated to LION and now iDVD ill not burn any dvds for me
Its starts the process and then quits unexpectedly.
I have tried the "plist solution" however, my directory is not at all the same. The library folder that contains the preferences is in a different location and no plist for iDVD was found.
I have no idea whats going on
    my iDVD is v 7.2.1
    Please help...

    Hi
    There are no iDVD v 7.2.1 - last release was v 7.1.2
There are at least two Libraries on Your Mac
    • Root level one - when You open first window of Your Start-Up hard disk - this is the WRONG one
    • Home Folder - Macintosh HD / Users / Your Home folder / Library / Preferences - and here it is
(BUT ON Macs using OS X.7 (Lion) this folder is hidden and needs to be set visibly - search forum to find out how - I'm still in OS X.6.? )
Easier way to get it to work is - Start a new User account and log into this - this forces Mac OS to do all Preferences new and Error Free.

  • Hello,  I am have problems with coruption of the photos in a slide show after burning the DVD in iDVD.  This coruption does not always appear when you preview the project.  I have slowed down the burn rate to 1X and kept the quality to professional.

I am having a great deal of problems with Data coruption in slide shows after I have burned a DVD in iDVD.  I have changed burn rate from best to 1X with no difference in the coruption.  I have the quality set to professional with no improvement.  The size of the project is near 3.95, so it should fit on a single layer burn.  Should I use either iMovie to create the slide show or "Photo to Movie"?  Also, can anyone comment on how I preserve the highest quality picture resolution with a slide show?  If I do use iMovie or Photo to Movie,  the file size should exceed the 4.2 size so, will I have to buy new DVD's which are capable to handle the double layer burn and upto 8 GB?  What DVD's are recommended?  Any preferred brand?  Are there problems with burning with double layer?  I read on this blog of numerous problems.

DVDs are LOW resolution by today's standards - only about 0.3 megapixels - so there is no way they your images on a TV set will look "High Definition".  See Preparing images for iDVD slideshows at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6675.html for recommendations on image sizes to use.  Using larger images won't give you better  quality, andf in some cases, will lower you image quality because  the Quicktime resizing that occurs isn't the best.

  • After burning to dvd, using idvd, movie stops on frame but audio continues

After creating imovie which works perfectly, and also after trasferring to idvd works perfectly, i have problems when playing back dvd after burning to disc. The movie stops but the audio continues. I altered the clip but same thing happened in next clip after next burn. I don't think its a corrupt clip, but maybe something to do with WHEN it occurs in the movie. Any suggestions? After 4 goes and many hours burning I am stumped!

    Hi Tomma1
And welcome to apple discussions. It's good you chose to use 16 bit audio for all of your source material. And assuming this is accurate info .... From what I can tell, you are doing nearly everything correctly. However let me ask you a few questions.
    1. Are you using the boot volume (the hard drive where iDvd and Leopard are actually located) to encode your dvd (yes/no)?
    2. More importantly, does the disc image also go out of sync when played thru apple's dvd player app? or does it only happen on the burned dvd-r?
    3. Are you using Verbatim Dvd-R or an alternate brand? if it's the latter, then for troubleshooting purposes while on this forum; please use Verbatim Dvd-R. (it helps us eliminate additional / possible variables). Thereafter feel free to use the media that works best for you and your mac.
    4. Have you tried an alternate encoding setting other than pro quality setting? and do you get the same results?

  • Idvd 08  shuts down after building, idvd will not burn a dvd

Dvd studio pro burns fine, Burning a DVD data disk works fine. Burning a project in Idvd 08 will not burn anything. It simply quits before finishing and spits out an empty dvd disk. I have a imac g5 power pc 2.1 ghz, 500gb hd, 2.5 gb ram and I am running idvd 08 version 7.0. I have tried reinstalling idvd and have even repaired permissions. What do I do? What could it be?

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • *Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb*
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides. Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets

  • Idvd will not burn a dvd

I have tried to burn a dvd with no luck, I have a macbook for over two years and never has the idvd been able to burn a dvd. The dvd is ejected just before it is done "less than a minute remaining" the disk is always blank. I have put several projects together in idvd and can only view it on my macbook. Everything is updated, I have spent alot of time tring to get the idvd to burn but no luck. Is there anything else that I can use to burn a dvd?

Compose the DVD, recording it to the desktop. Will have img after the name. After you've composed the DVD ready for burn, instead of using iDVD, choose from the top left, drop down menu, for burn to disc image. (That's the same menu drop down you use for choosing your film in the first place.) When that's done, click on the disc icon which has appeared on the desktop, that one with img after the name, and that will make a box appear showing video and audio records. Click on the red + to get rid of it. That action will have made the disc to be seen and ready for burn in Utilities. Chose Go from the screen top and then Utilities - Disc Utility App. On the left side of the box is that name followed by img. Click on it. Go the top and in Images menu go down to burn and click on it. Your drawer ready for the burn should open. Pace your disk in the tray and choose Close. When Burn comes up, small box to the right, click on that and await results. Good luck.

  • IDVD freezes after burn

After many successful DVD burns, my iDVD has developed a problem! It only allows 2 DVDs to be burnt. Then, it freezes. The display is: "burn" highlighted with blue "task" bar complete. And, message is "cleaning up" followed by "done" underneath blue bar. However, at this point, I cannot cancel or close iDVD window. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Just to add to Sue's excellent advice ..... might also be that your burner is over heating after multiple burns. try allowing more time in between burns to avoid system freeze (that or invest in an ext. DL FW Burner).
You can make your own burner like I did from a pioneer S-Drive 110U, 111, or 112 mounted within a standard FW enclosure like this:

  • Unsupported format after burning on DVD Player

I burn many discs on iDVD and always do it the same way - I have found that a few of the discs are unable to be read on my player after burning.  So some work fine and some cannot be read in the Player.  I get the message "Unsupported Format" on my player.  Any suggestions?

If iDVD didn't have sound before you authored the DVD, you won't have sound after the DVD is created.  Did you create a self contained Quicktime movie out of your editing system before importing into iDVD?  Did the Quicktime file have sound in the Quicktime Player?  Here's an article I wrote about transferring your HD footage to DVD.  You need to break the process up into steps to avoid problems.

  • Unable to select individual chapters after burning to DVD.

I created a wedding DVD with six different chapters in IDVD. Five are videos and one is a slide show. After burning the disc everything seemed fine except I am unable to select the chapters in my DVD player. Is this because I used a DVD+R DL for the blank media instead of a DVD-R DL? I had to use a DL disc because of the size.

    Hi
You are familiar with the - long going - iDVD BUG !
This been hunting us in several versions - and never been corrected.
To set it of - You make a movie in iMovie or FinalCut - With Chapters
Import it into a new project in iDVD
You see something in need of correcting
    Return to Video-editing program (application)
When back in iDVD - it will notice and ask You to either
    • Up-Date - or
    • Cancel
    NON WILL WORK
    Resulting DVD if made will
    • Play movie OK
    • All Chapters (Sceen Selections) - WILL START AS Chapter ONE !

  • IDVD will not burn a DVD - just disk image - why not?

I did a short iMovie project (just about 6 or 7 minutes of video); used a theme, added background music from my iTunes collection-- OK all fine; exported via "Share" to iDVD (all this is iLife'09 and Leopard 10.5.6 on a MacBook May 2006).
I did a DISK IMAGE but then also wanted to test to burn a real DVD. That got to to final step then hung- said one minute to go, then ejected the DVD - but nothing was on the DVD.
Later I used DISK UTILITY to burn the disk image to a DVD- and that DVD played fine on my Mac and even on my 7 year old DVD player.
OK so my MB DVD burner is working; the iDVD makes a valid Disk Image-- but why can't I go directly from iDVD to a DVD?
Thanks for any comments here -- I believe there has been a bit of discussion on this, but not sure if others are able to make a DISK IMAGE and then (if then) burn a DVD as I have. But I'm still not able to do this directly from iDVD.

Hi Beverly, I am using the imovie 09 version with iDVD 09. I didn't do any more editing after sharing the project to iDVD from within imovie. I get no error messages at all, that's the strange thing. It acts like it is encoding fine. But, when you watch the finished product, either a disc image or a burned dvd, it is garbled up from about halfway thru to the end. I even tried to have idvd save the project as a disc image and then used Toast 9 to burn it, and it is the same way, messed up. Just to be sure it wasn't the imovie 09 doing it, I took the same imovie 09 project, put it in Toast 9, and let Toast save it as a disc image, and it was fine. And I burned it with toast and the dvd played fine. I then tried to share the same project again, from imovie 09, to idvd 09, and save to disc image, and or burn it to dvd and again, it messes it up badly. This is a brand new imac bought from the apple store locally. I really can't understand why idvd 09 is this bad? It doesn't make any sense. I've eliminated imovie 09 as the problem. Like I said before, I have a lot of experience using the previous versions of imovie 6, and idvd 6 on a powerbook G4, without any problems? Oh, and I did get the menu sound to work, but not the method listed here. I tried all of those listed, without success. I found that if you keep dragging out the menu sound, and replace it with a new mp3, and drag it out, it finally works. I did this about 6 times. Then, all of a sudden it worked. Makes no sense at all. I never did see the little wave sound thing he talked about. It works now, but the wave isn't there? If there is a way to just remove idvd 09, and replace it with idvd 6.04, I'll do that. Is this possible?
