IDVD CRASHES at end of menu encoding

after iLife '08 upgrade iDVD is trashed. Can't do anything with it.
Thought I was home free after solving the music-dragging-crash problem.
Nope. Now iDVD crashes AGAIN (completely vanishes off screen) without any error message immediately after it finishes encoding the main menu (40 minutes of rendingering no less!!).
I have a very simple project: single main menu, 3 small videos. That's it. Using my original 6.0 Reflections theme.
This is the crummiest piece of software I've ever seen. Totally useless. GIVE ME BACK version 6!!!
I bought this iMac solely for the purpose of creating DVDs. It was beautiful, simple, reliable......was. The iLife upgrade has destroyed my confidence in Apple.

if you were working entirely within apple's pro apps (ie, FCP > DVDSP) I'd say sure go ahead and use all the ext. HD's you want since external support is built into to these apps. But this is iDVD. There is no support for external HD's with iDVD. It works best on an internal boot drive and not to an external HD ....... unless....... that ext. HD is firewire 400 / 800 and has an OS loaded to it like this (Mac OS Extended / Journaled) with plenty of available space to work with:
By sdmacuser at 2007-08-26
Otherwise find a way to clear more space on the main internal HD so iDVD can do its job smoothly. Just a suggestion that I hope is helpful. Good luck!
Btw .... I use the above approach to test all apple software /updates to iDVD before I load them to my main mac HD. If it flies in the above scenario (without any hiccups) then I can rest assured it will also work on the main internal HD since it's an exact copy /clone of the above HD.

  • IDVD crashes and Didn't burn my Theme's menu page....

OK, I'm new to iDVD but here goes....iDVD crashed 4x typically just after reviewing the current changes and trying to add media from iTunes (after reviewing the DVD). Therefore I just avoided doing that again to get around it. But this is a bit of a pain especially if you wanted to change anything! However, what really ground my gears was after burning a trial DVD I ended with no menu page whatsoever. Oddly, everything played as it should, I just had no menu to select anything from. Would anyone care to hazzard an explanation and or solution?
    Much obliged!

    +My mac is a 2.0ghz intel 20" screen model.+
    So it's an iMac?
Keep your iDVD project file here: User/Documents. Don't store it on an external drive. You can store video on the externals. Still images might be better for you on the internal. This is to keep the internal with 20+GB free space in the future.
    +The discs I'm using are Rewritable Philips +RW (4.7gb/ 120min video)+
    THAT may be your problem.
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility. You can set burn speed in iDVD '08 if not creating a disc image.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his iDVD 6 book:
iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual
Quoting David: "Cheaper brands don't use the same amount of organic dyes and are more likely to suffer premature deaths."
I buy Verbatim white inkjet printable in stacks of 50. Verbatim's part number: 94971. They have been flawless for me.

  • IDVD crashing upon encoding assets

    Hi,
I have scanned all sorts of forums and have not been able to find the answer needed to fix the following problem. During burning a DVD, iDVD crashes when it encodes assets.
I have 50GB left on my HD, did permissions repair, rebooting computer, changing quality settings, deleted the iDVD plist file and nothing works. I have tried burning to DMG, and Video_TS file. Same goes. Some of my assets on the film are HD, but this never stopped it from burning before.
Can anyone give me any advice or share a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    M

    Hi Bengt,
You bring up a good point. The project was shot in XDCAM 25fps. After postproduction, the file became APRHQ. Due to the weight of the file on export (about 5 GB), I decided to export it through Quicktime conversion as NTSC SD Widescreen. The video weighed about 1.06 GB, so I decided to use it.
I looked at when it quit during the encoding process (during encoding another asset), so I saved that as a last reserve option.
The DVD burned with the original APRHQ file, but now the question: Why would it not accept the QT converted SD export?
    Best,

  • Installed iDVD 08 My iDVD 08  quits near the end stages of encoding

    Hello
My iDVD 08 unexpectedly quits during end stages of encoding
I installed iDVD 08 per the Apple fix before I even installed the first time. I removed the files stated in the lists the install all of iDVD 08. I did install new Garage Band at the same time, FYI
Rebuilt permissions, used Cocktail to clean up everything. From movie 6 I shared a project with DVD 08, chose one of the new themes, and professional quality encoding. I always burn to image file.
It unexpectedly quit then and tried again. I have plenty of empty disc space.
After the first quit, I dumped the .plist file.
It quit again and now I am trying with still a 08 theme but regular quality encoding.
    Any help or ideas?

Not sure what to offer for help here. You have taken the correct steps. I'm assuming you also ran apple's software updater.
Suggestion: Prior to installing any new software I'd recommend you first clone your existing HD as a backup which is what I do using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (assuming your existing HD is fully operative). Then proceed with the software install or update. In the future, always have a backup plan.
Use this only as a very last resort (wait for other suggestions also):

  • IDVD crashes during encoding

I have been trying to burn a dvd of videos I put together in Final Cut Express. The lenght is 1 hour and 32 minutes. I have tried different lenghts... 1:25 , 1:43 and it made no diff.
The problem occurs around 2 hours into encoding. idvd crashes and says it unexpectedly closed. initially it indicated it would take 4 to 5 hours to burn.
I posted a question on FCE forum as well hoping someone with Final cut exp knows something.
    My question is this:
What is the max video lenght idvd burns at the highest professional encode setting?
How much free disk space do I need to have free on my hard drive to be able to burn a long video like that? I have 25 gigs free.
I have tried to save as disk image, with the image being saved on the external drive so there would be no issue with how much room I have left on the HD, and IT made no diff.
I started a new project and again no diff.
I am in the porocess of burning a smaller clip around 30 minutes so I will see if there is a problem with a shorter clip.
I burned a 2 minutes video and it worked ok.
The file I am using is a quicktime movie file exported using Final cut exp (not self-contained) so it is just a reference file with the actual video on 2 external firewire drives daisy-chained together.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I got it to work after several attempts. Thanks to tips from the apple discussions forum under Final cut express.
The footage I had were nested sequences and it needed to be exported to quicktime movie Self-Contained.
The self contained 71gb and iDVD worked with 25gigs free on my system hard drive.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • IDVD crashes when encoding imported Quicktime movies

I have quicktime movie slideshows that I made from iPhoto and posted on the web. The original photos have since been lost in a hard drive crash. I am trying to make a DVD with four of these movies.
They seem to import OK. They preview OK. But when I burn the DVD (or make a disk image) iDVD crashes after finishing encoding the menus and starting on the slideshow/movie encoding.
I have tried it with a slideshow exported directly from iPhoto and it works fine. I have tried doing several individual quicktime movies to see if one of them was the culprit, but it still crashes.
    Any suggestions?

I have quicktime movie slideshows that I made from iPhoto and posted on the web.
    John,
    Welcome to the iDVD forum!
    Any suggestions?
Whenever a movie is causing some issues, it can be better to export it as full quality DV. You can do this with QT Pro, or by importing it into iMovie. You might lose some QT special effects when you do this, but it might fix whatever glitch is causing problems.
Then use the iMovie project (or QT Pro exported DV file) in iDVD. Use "save as disk image" to test it out on one movie.

  • IDVD crashing on MacBook with project created on PowerBook

Hi All. I have a question about iDVD crashing. When I try to open a (previously OK) ~ 1Gb iDVD project it tells me the content is too big to fit on a DVD (it isn't). Below is what it says about the project in that opening error message. Anyway, if I try to open the menu for "Project Info" iDVD crashes/quits. No error message, it just quits and drops me back into the Mac OS.
Oh yeah, I did all the work on iDVD on my PowerBook, I now just upgraded to a MacBook and the problem has begun since. The iDVD project is still "OK" on the PowerBook and I tried to recopy it from the PB to the MB but once again it crashes iDVD on the MB.
The PowerBook is OS 10.4.6 and the MacBook is 10.4.7 and both are running iDVD 6.0.2.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

If you want to movie projects between computers they need to be archived.......and include all the source files.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/236.html
    To archive your iDVD project:
Check the file permissions for the assets in the project and set them to Read & Write if you want others to be able to open or copy the assets in the archived project. Click the link below if you're not sure how to do this.
Choose File > Archive Project, and then click Save.
Type a name for your archived project.
Locate the folder where you want to save the project. The size of the current project is displayed in the Archive Project dialog.
Click "Include themes" if you want to archive the themes with the project. Select this option if you are using custom themes that might not exist on another computer, or if you want to be able to use your theme in future versions of iDVD.
Click "Include encoded files" so the project files won't need to be reencoded after being moved to a different location. To save time and hard disk space, leave this option unchecked.
Click Save. Your project is saved with the word "Archived" in the file name.
Is this how you moved them?

  • IDVD crashes on my iMac 24'' with Leopard

However, iDVD crashes on my iMac 24'' (old version). It works fine on my MacBook.
I tried a lot of things including reinstalling and updating to Leopard 10.5.1 and iDVD 7.0.1. But still is crashing after start. As I would like to burn my marriage I really need to have it running.
Any further help is welcome. I feel that the NVidia driver for Leopard are **bad**

    Hi iscger,
I've had the same problem, only after having kernel panics first.
You might find usefull information in the following topic.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1203323&tstart=0
Somewhere near the end I have posted a summary.
Just to my interest. Did iDVD work at first? Have you created a project already? Or did iDVD freeze the first time you used it.

  • IDVD crashes right after clicking "BURN" button!!!

    Hello,
hope anyone could help me with my urgent problem!
Just bought a new iBook G4 14.1" about a week ago. I've created a project in iMovie. I've added songs cut the seens and so on.......
    THE PROBLEM:
after exporting to iDVD everything works fine. I've creted a menu scenes,... evrything (took a lot of time).
Right, when I click the "BURN " button the whole thing(iDVD) crashes and doesnt even produce an error report, nothing. Just a message saying that iDVD has quit and so on...
VEry desprate and hope someone could have a suggestion.
The project is about 1:28 (20GB) in iMOvie and about 7GB in iDVD. i have 20GB of free space on my startup disk, hopefully!
    Thanks again for any suggestions!

    1st troubleshooting step with iDVD:
Delete the iDVD preference (plist) file (com.apple.iDVD.plist)
Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utiltiy in Applications>Utilities
    Then try again....
1:28 (20GB) in iMOvie and about 7GB in iDVD
Are you trying to burn this on a double layer or single layer DVD? Go to the project info window and set it correctly.

  • IDVD crashes unexpectedly when trying to burn a DVD.

Hi. Although this question is previously asked by 'Marie' and successfully answered by 'Silly Rabbit', I and many other users experience the same problem of iDVD crashing when pressing the 'Burn' button, even after following the steps:
    1. Remove iDVD and all relative files (playlists, projects)
    2. Repair permission from disk utility
    3. Run Onyx cache cleaner (system+kernell)
    4. Re-install iDVD
    5. Re-run permissions repair.
and still nothing. Crashes the minute I press 'Burn' regardless the type of menus, content (video, images), file size, etc. Additional dvd-r software in computer are mac the ripper and popcorn and vlc player. All MAC OS X updates are done since it is a brand new iMac G5. Can't get any help from apple. Thought crashing, bugs and re-installations would be history when changed from PC a month ago...
    Any help?!
    Thank you
    Panos
    Happy new year

    Hi Panos,
Sorry you had to bump your head in iDVD so soon after geting the iMac. In my oppinion is the most buggy piece of software Apple ever made. The idea is very nice, and I tried all sort of things to make this program work, because i like it a lot. But it's just not working. I switched to DVD Studio Pro, which works like a charm, and you have much more options and controll.
The plist is the preference file, each program has one. It's normal that another file is created when you start the program. The reason to delete it is exactly this one: to create a new plist. Be aware that the settings are restored to their default values, for instance to NTSC (and you also want PAL, like me), when a new plist is created.
You can try also to delete previously encoded assets (Advanced>Delete Encoded Assets), maybe it will make a difference for you.
And please, don't be dissapointed because of iDVD. The rest of Mac OS X, and other programs, and Apple hardware are just nice.
    Good luck

  • IDVD crashes since upgraading to 10.4.3

Since upgrading to iDVD, I have been unable to get through an entire movie encoding without iDVD crashing early on. Old projects that ran fine up to 10.4.2 all suffer the same fate.
Looking at the processes as it's running, iDVD rapidly goes on to use over 80% of my 1GB of memory before dying an ungraceful death. I have no external memory, everything is basically the same as when I bought it last December.
Any suggestions that don't involve reinstallation before I go down that road?

  • IDVD crashing in stage 2

I've made many dvd's with iDVD 4.0.1 over the last year, but this time it seems to be having issues. I have a pretty small video with a couple of audio clips that seemed for some reason to make iDVD crash (unexpectedly quit) in stage 2. I cleared room on my hard drive to 20GB, and then it burned. I added one more video clip to the menu (from existing video on the dvd) and a slideshow. Again, it's crashing in Stage 2. I've cleaned all of my caches with MacSweeper and MacJanitor. It still doesn't want to burn. I've also tried the Hurz and Pfurz option, but it also quits at the same spot. This is my sister's wedding video, so I really need to make it work. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I suspect running Qt 7.0.3 with OS X (10.3.9) may be the problem.
This may be drastic unless someone offers a better idea but http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime703.ht ml will restore 7.0.1 and http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime702.ht ml has a download to go back to QT 6.5.2.
This may help but you might need to delete your QT preferences.
Let us know if this helps.

  • IDVD crashes upon starting

I bought a MBP sometimes in february and it came with iLife installed. Now I have upgraded to OSX Lion and when I try to launch iDVD it shows the first menu ( create a new project, open existing project, etc) and when I select one of those options it closes itself. When I select photos in iPhoto and then select to burn them on iDVD it closes as well. So basically it's not responding. Any ideas of what to do?
Eventhough I selected iDVD '08, I'm not sure what version it is because it will not let me check the vesion. it crashes (closes) as soon as it opens that menu

You can check the version of iDVD by selecting it in the Applications folder and typing Command+i to bring up its Info window.
    Try the following:
delete the iDVD preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder and delete its contents.
    launch iDVD and try again.

  • IDVD crashes on Xserve

I recently bought a 2nd hand dual-CPU G5 Xserve, expecting that this machine would give me a good performance-boost (over a single-CPU G5 iMac) in preparing iDVD DVD-images.
    Guess what?
iDVD crashes instantly after selecting the 'Save as Disc Image...' menu item...
My Xserve does not have a graphics-card installed an maybe/possibly this causes the crash.
Does anybody (Apple?) know a way to run iDVD on my new Mac?

How are you running iDVD with no monitor? Are you saving to an XServe disk? Are other programs able to save OK?

  • Dvd burn stops idvd crashes

Have been having problem when burning dvd, burns so far than quits & notice idvd crash
do not understand what the message means is happening with every dvd burn attempt
Also need to know how to send idvd project to trash / delete when done with it

I had the same problem until I realized I was editing in HD after years of editing Standard DVD video.  My hard drive was formated for 32bit and can only record up to 4 GB per file.  I had to take one of my hard drives and reformat it to the journal setting so there are no blocks which leaves the entire hard drive of a 2TB unit to record those unbeleavable HD movies.  The mov I was trying to take to IDVD was 26GB and it recoreded all the way this time.  I DVD will automatically dreduce it to fit on a standard DVD.
Whats rediculous is that every one records in HD now because they can but give little thought as to how its going to be edited.  Standard DVD looks great when played on a blue ray and no professionals dont want to pay the extra fee to edit and take it to blue ray as many people dont have Blue ray yet.
Other problems can also stop your recording like a bad still photo file or one that is still in a raw state and not formated.
    Hope this helps.
