IDVD creating disk image larger than it should be.

I exported an iMovie to iDVD and set up the dvd using one of the supplied themes. I checked the disk info to make sure it will fit the DVD-R. The program says my file should be about 3.9 Gigs. The disk burn was incomplete so I tired to create a disk image instead. The size of the disk image is 4.57 gigs.
The incomplete dvd would play all the way until the last few minutes of the movie and then crash the dvd player.
The last time this happened to me I had to reinstall the OS and lost the project I was working on as a result. Does anyone have a less drastic solution?
I have about 60 gigs of free space on my hard drive still.
Thank you

The movie was just under two hours long. It is about the length that I used to make all my previous movies. I know that if I reinstall the OS and software that it will correctly create the disk image. I have already tried reinstalling the iDVD software and the result is the same problem. I also know that the file should fit the disk because when I look at the project info it shows that the project size is 3.8 gigs. It is just that when I do create the disk image the final file size of the image is around 4.57 gigs. (The project info still shows 3.8 gigs after creating the image.)
It would take several days of backing up and reinstalling software and I would like to avoid that if possible as I would also lose a lot of my preference settings. One other symptom, if I tried to burn data disks from the finder, I have to restart between burns or the second disk will fail to burn.

  • IDVD create disk image larger than DVD-R capacity

    Here's the background:
    - I made an iMovie 6 in 16:9 NTSC that is 1:32:00:06 long. I put that into iDVD 6, use the 5.0 Theme called "Wedding White", no slideshow, just a few photos and one 128k audio AAC file for menu music. Motion menu right now is about 5min45sec, but I can change that no problem.
    - In iDVD 6's "Project info", left hand column shows "NTSC", "Widescreen (16:9)", "Best Quality", "Single-Layer (SL) - 4.2GB"; all correct.
Right hand column - Project Duration is 97:47min, Motion Menus is 5:46 of 7:30, Tracks 1 of 99, Menus 3 of 99; all green.
"DVD Capacity" was shown as ~3.3GB before the burning.
    Here's the problem:
    - When I first burned directly onto a single-layer DVD-R, an error will come on during burning or multiplexing near the end. Disc will eject, and the disc IS PLAYABLE on all DVD players. Only problem is that the movie will end (or says "Disc scratched or dirty", then crashes DVD Player on my Mac) at around 1:30:50; about 1min 11sec short. iDVD will also hang, and need to be forced quit.
    - If I check that finished DVD-R with Disk Utility, it'll show:
    --Capacity 4.4GB (4,706,074,624)
    --Used 4.4GB (4,739,385,344)
    - Same results with two decent media, a Sony 16x and a Ritex G05 8x.
    - After reading a lot of posts in this discussion board, I tried two things:
    1. Clean up my primary HD, which was down to <10GB free. I realized that I need double the disk space to properly burn. Now, it's at around 30GB free.
    2. Instead of direct burn, I saved it as Disc Image. Results:
-- Video_TS file totally fine when played with DVD Player.
-- Disc Utility shows: Capacity 4,739,923,968 Bytes, Used 4,739,385,344 Bytes
But when I tried to burn that image onto a disc in Disk Utility, it says the media doesn't have enough room.
    3. I went back to iDVD 6's "Project Info", and the "DVD Capacity" bar is now filled, yellow and says "4.2GB of 4.2GB".
[I actually tried earlier with a slightly different version with longer motion menus, and a slightly longer movie. And the DVD it tried to burn is even larger, at 4,847,159,296 Bytes. Similar results, but that DVD will end about 4 minutes short. But I didn't write down all the iDVD 6 details that time.]
    SOOOOOO....
It seems to me that iDVD 6 is miscalculating its rendering or compression ratio, and is creating a final disc image larger than the capacity of a single-layer DVD-R, even though all parameters are set and displayed correctly.
For me, I'll cut down on the motion menu duration to see if that will help, as I'm right now JUST BARELY over the capacity.
Because of the early audio problem with iMovie/iDVD 6, this is the my first "finished" iDVD 6 product. Before, I have had no problem with movies that are close to the 120-minute limit, though this is the first time I use a 5.0 Theme with motion menus.
So, any ideas, any comments? Please post. Also, what else should I do besides posting here to let Apple and other users know of this problem? Thanks!

    An update:
I cut down the loop duration of the motion menus, from 5:46 to 2:50. The resulting disc image is down to 4.25GB (4,563,716,096 bytes) and will fit onto a single-layer DVD-R.
So, I finally made my first successful DVD using iDVD 6. Still don't know why this has been such an adventure compared to earlier iLife versions.

  • Cannot create disk image iDvd 7.1.2 (multiplex error)

I'm at my wits end and extremely disappointed.
Basically, I've gone through the threads that I can find, I'm down to importing a basic movie directly into iDvd.  No menus.  No options enabled (that I'm aware of).
When I go through the iDvd process of creating a disk image all goes smoothy until the very end when I get a multiplexor error (no error code or text saying why).
Extremely frustrating.  This is on a new Macbook Pro running 10.7.2.  I don't have problems with my other Apple systems, just this new one.  Perhaps Apple would like to take it back??

    Hi
    Multiplexing Error
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) -
one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.
Now my long long list on Multiplex Error

as described by Donnyboy69.  Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
    B.    Location of Chapters
    • Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)

    Chuck, Chicago 2/7/2009.
Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.
    by dheb0422
Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.
    One user more writes
To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
    • Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
    • No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
    • No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
    2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
    3. Safe re-boot
    4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
    SDMacuser adds to this
    • On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
    5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
    6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
    7. Trash iDVD pref. file
    8. Make a new iDVD project
    9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
    10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

  • Disk Utility Error 61 when attempting to create disk image on external driv

I would like to make occasional archive backups of my three macintosh computers. I bought a new Western Digital 2TB drive for this purpose, and formatted it as Mac OS Extended. Trying to do a disk image backup using Disk Utility, I follow the directions:
    - Startup from an install DVD.
    - Start Disk Utilities and select "Restore"
    - Drag "Macintosh HD" into the Source box
    - Click on "New Image" and select compressed and 128-bit AES encryption
This leads to the error message: Unable to create "....." (error -61)
I have enocountered this problem both with my iMac G5 and a MacBook, both running Leopard.
Does anyone know what this error means, what I am doing wrong, and/or if there is another way to create disk image backups? Help!

    1. For reasons I don't know disc images seem to become more fragile the larger they get. They also can be subject to file corruption that affects the entire disc image, whereas file corruption on a clone would only affect certain files.
    2. You cannot put multiple clones on the same volume. Each clone must be on a separate volume, but you can have multiple volumes on a single drive simply by partitioning the drive accordingly. Of course you need a drive large enough to accommodate each clone. Each clone should be to a space equal to the capacity of the cloned drive.
    3. I'm not a big fan of TM, although I must confess it has become more reliable since it's release, especially with Snow Leopard. However, there are many backup utilities that can create clones, perform incremental updates, and archive changed files. See the following:

  • Can't create disk image with Disk Utility

I just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion and i can no longer create disk images with Disk Utility in order to store encrypted data.
The operation fails and ends with the post :
Failed to create disk image, error:
hdiutil: create failed - Resource busy
I use three Macs with Mountain Lion, and this problem occurs only on one of the three.
I check the disk, repair permissions and did a reset of the PRAM. I even did a reinstall of Mountain Lion, without success.
But curiously, using a new user account, I was able to create a first disk image. But no one after.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

It depends upon the capabilities of your printer. If you have an HP printer with a photo tray then the Photo app will print to whatever size you load in to that tray.
    There's some more information here:

  • What's the best way to create disk images?

of 300GB  hard drives or partitions?
Disk utility is failing for me with an input/output error.
    A typical example:
    I have a new HFS+ 500GB external FW 800 drive that I am using a destination.
I will boot from my original 'install' DVD and then open up disk utility to start the disk image creation.
Note: my source is my "Macintosh HD" partition that is around 300GB.
Everything looks like it is running well, then a couple hours into it, it fails... something like:
"cannot create img.. blah input/output error".
Note: Verify Disk shows no errors on the source.
One guess is that the img creation process is failing after I leave the computer and perhaps my computer falls asleep. I tried setting the 'Energy Saver' prefs in the systems prefs, but of course, since I'm running off the install DVD, I wasn't able to get into the prefs.
Anyway, ultimately, I need to create periodic disk images of my macs.. so what are people using to do this?
    Thanks for the comments!
    Donovan

Eric, Carbon Copy Cloner is what I was leaning towards. The owner says his guess is that there are bad blocks on my HD, and since Disk Utility is block based, that it is failing where CCC is file based, and will just skip files that are corrupted or that it can't copy.
I guess I'll roll with that for now.. but it would be nice if the Disk Utility logs spit out a more descriptive log.. instead of "could not create disk image, input/output error".
    Thanks!

  • Can't create disk image of external disk

I just switched from a PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4, to a MacBook Pro running 10.5. I'm trying to create a disk image of the old machine's hard disk, as a backup. Before doing this, I ran Disk Utility to make sure none of my disks were in need of repair.
I started up the old machine in Target Disk mode and connected it to the new one. In Disk Utility, I selected the disk, and clicked Create Disk Image. I told it to save the disk image as uncompressed and writable, on a disk that has plenty of space. So it chugs along for about an hour, creating an 80GB image.
Then once the image is done, I try to mount it and get an error, saying that the disk image has no mountable file systems. I've done this four times already, each time with the same result. In addition, if I try to restart after creating the image, the system hangs.
Any ideas why this might be happening? Are there any known bugs with Disk Utility in Leopard? Interestingly, I tried to do the same thing with Carbon Copy Cloner, and ran into a different error (it thought that it couldn't mount the newly-created image).

Yesterday I bought a Maxtor Basic external harddrive for my mac.
Followed the instructions, using Disk Utility, formatted the hd, then I tried to create a 60 gb blank encrypted disk image but failed twice; after clicking 'Create', Disk Utility does not prompt to create a password.
First time Disk Utility just hangs; there's no respond for 30mins, so i force quit it and reformatted the drive, again.
Then I tried to create a 10mb encrypted disk image and the box appears to enter a password, so I presume it was working fine.
Again, I tired to create the 60gb blank image. This time, i left it overnight, thinking maybe it just takes a longer time. No prompt for passwords, and in the morning, the msg I got was 'No drive found' or something like that, because the drive has ejected itself. (???)
Anyone has any idea why? I could create the image on my mac and throw it in the external drive, but my mac onlyhas 15 gb of space.
Let me know if this sounds like a problem with the Maxtor so I could exchange it ASAP.

    Hi Billy,
I suspect the text size in the system's control panel is 150%?
She can simply go to Acrobat preferences -> General -> Then change the "Scale for screen resolution" to 100%. This will force the UI to run at 100% like it did before.

  • Creating Disk Image Freezes

I'm attempting to do a full backup of my boot drive to an external hard drive using Disk Utility to create a disk image.  For some reason, it always gets to a certain point, and then locks up.  This morning when I came into the office, it was locked up on the task "Adding Resources".  I've successfully created disk images of other workstations on this hard drive, but for some reason have been unsuccessful with my main workstation.
Anyone have any thoughts as to why this is happening?  Does Carbon Copy Cloner create a full disk image just as good as Disk Utility?  I find it odd that I don't have to unmount the disk that CCC is creating a disk image from.  Thoughts?

  • Music distorted after creating disk image of iDVD file

I was getting encoding errors so I saved the DVD file as a disk image and then used Disk Utility to burn it. Everything worked except for the video is small and the music sounds like it's being over amplified to the point of distortion. If you have suggestions on either I'd appreciate it. Also what are your thoughts on iLife '11. Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums.
It sounds like the video and audio were in a format that gave iDVD some problems (iDVD has to convert/transcode some formats into video and audio file formats which meet the DVD standard). Any chance of obtaining an uncompressed, higher quality file?
