IDVD disk does not play

I shared a movie from iMovie into iDVD. The resulting DVD plays in the Mac, but on my PC, when I press play all I get is a frozen title page--the default menu from iDVD with two diagonal slashes--one of which says "Full Frame 2" and the other says "My Great DVD" and there's a little apple logo on the bottom right. I've tried playing the DVD with several different players and the same thing happens: nothing! Does anyone know what's wrong?
Power Book Mac OS X (10.4)

but on my PC
I've tried playing the DVD with several different players
The resulting DVD plays in the Mac
If it plays on your Mac, it should work. Other "players" may be your problem. Media can be an issue with players.
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his latest book:
iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual
Quoting David: "Cheaper brands don't use the same amount of organic dyes and are more likely to suffer premature deaths."

  • DVDSP-authored disk does not play on PC

Hi, I authored my reel on DVD Studio Pro and burned a DVD. I've heard from several people that the DVD doesn't play on their PC. Is there any way to correct this within DVDSP?

My guess it is maybe related to Windows, but stepping through

    1. I burned the DVD on my MacBook Pro 17" equipped with OS 10.4.11.
If for some reason you are not using a Universal Binary version of the software perhaps that could be the issue, but I have not heard of a playback issue on PCs showing up when using a non-Universal DVD SP on an Intel machine if the software worked.
You mentioned you set a first play. Usually it is a good idea to set a first play to a few seconds of blank movie/FBI warning track or something similar (and not a menu). Also it is usually a good idea to put the first play material into the first VTS using VTS view. (A quick look at [VTS View Link|http://dvdstepbystep.com/vts.php] Those two things can help with playback issues and thought I should put those out there
    2. Sorry, but all the information I got from people is that the DVD wouldn't run. They are all on Windows systems. They were not specific in the error message that they might be getting.
    3. I think the OS on the players they are using is a good cross section of combinations.
    4. I'm not sure what VLC on a PC is. Could you explain this?
Yeah, always a pain nailing down the info. Part of the issue on Windows machines are the number of Oses and Players, plus some issues with Windows Media which has a rap of not being perfect. That is also coupled with the fact that sometimes people do not set things up properly or mess up settings. Of course it is little solace when trying to author and you hear "But everything else works."
Anyway, VLC is a playback software that is pretty good even on Windows
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
If you can get your hands on a PC, or have a friend who has one or one of the people trying the DVD out is someone you can get more details from, it could help. The one concern is that if there is a good cross section as a matter of odds one should work (unless all people running the same thing in an office or something.) Sometimes bad burns or bad media can cause issues of playback or non-playback, and perhaps there is something in the media, but it is a bit of a stretch.
    5. I burned the DVD straight from DVD SP.
Hmmm. It should work, but even then a weird burn can cause issues (there were some cases where people were able to burn a DVD in DVD SP but could not play it back on the same machine due to drive going bad/getting dirty.)
I guess I have not put you much further to the answer quite yet, sorry. If it is working on a standalone DVD player and the Mac, bad burn or authoring issue could still be in play on the PC side or it could be Windows issue still...as Gary mentions here [Windows Issue|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8981993&#8981993] and some more [Other WMP|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8898821&#8898821]

    Hi
*I do put paper labes on discs --*
NEVER DO THAT - The ability to get them perfectly centered is near to impossibly
DVDs are many tims more sencitive to missaligmement by 1/100 or 1/1000 of a millimeter.
CDs often can handle this - but still not advicably.
    I do.
    • Use only Verbatim (Taiyo Yuden - also recommended by many - no own experience)
    • DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    • Burn at an as slow speed possibly eg x1 with iDVD08 or higher or Roxio Toast™
    or Apple Disk Util tool
    • NEVER under 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk (others not important)
    • I use a Cleaning-DVD from time to time
    • I burn max 3 DVD at a time then cool for 20min
    • I use the Cleaning DVD on my other players as well
    On Quality.
    *DVD quality*
    1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on:
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS: They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD08
    Pro Quality (only in iDVD08)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD08
    2. Project info: Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD08.
    Region codes:
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
    1 = US
    2 = EU

  • My disk drive does not play any original dvd or cd anymore, but the copies work fine, no matter which format. Do I need a new disk drive?

    Hello All,
since last week my disk drive does not play any original DVD or CD anymore, but copied ones, no matter which format work fine. I am a bit confused that the copied ones still work.
Anybody experienced the same? Will I have to get a new disk drive? Unfortunately the warranty expired last month
Looking forward to your answers and thanks,
    Yvonne

An external DVD drive from http://www.macsales.com/ may solve your problems.

    Buy iDVD on Disk.
Yes, there are other programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, DVD Creator, Wondershare, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/idvd.html
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.  (works with all Mac OS 10.5 and newer.)

  • The theme does not play at the beginning.

I am using iDVD 7.1.2 with 1080 video edited in iMovie 9.09. The theme I set up does not play at the beginning when the DVD loads. The movie starts on it's own and the theme plays when the movie is over, or you can use the menu button to get to it. This happens in Apple DVD Payer on my iMac, my DVD player and my Blu-ray player. I have tried the Revolution theme and the Reflection White theme. I have tried including chapters in the movie, even though it's only two minutes long. Any ideas?

    Go into the Map mode
and remove whatever is in the left hand, blue Auto Play bin.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

  • Dual Layer Disc Does not Play in Set Top DVD Player

Problem: Dual Layer Disc Does not Play in Set Top DVD Player
Solution: If your burner supports having its bitsetting changed, find a utility and change it to include DVD-ROM.
    Additional Information:
DL (Dual Layer) is currently only a +R format. This is a serious problem, as you will find that on older players - and a lot of new ones - there is no +R support. It is not official, and therefore useless for any professional application.
By changing the bitsetting of your burner, it allows DLs (Dual Layer discs) to be burned with a book type of DVD-Rom and thus readable by many more players.
DVD player support drops off exponentially if your burner doesn't support bitsetting, allowing you to change the book type of your disc from DL to DVD-Rom. The DL book type will play on most newer software DVD players but not set top players.
If you've burned a dual layer disc without changing the bitsetting, it is a permanent semi-coaster as it will only play on your computer. I understand that newer DL burners are coming with firmware that automatically sets the book type.
Encore offers no control over book-type. My understanding is that this is a burner-specific parameter: some burners support allow themselves to be set and others do not.
Bitsetting (setting the Book Type) is specific to individual burners. There are some 3rd party software utilities out there that do a good job. The best thing to do is do a Google Search for your specific burner and find what works for yours.
LiteOn has a book type utility available for its DL burners:
I believe DVDInfoPro can set this on burners which support it.
Note: I would caution everyone who updates their firmware to check their bitsetting before burning DL discs. I don't know if it always returns to its default but it did in my case.
Bitsetting is done prior to burning the disk and generally only needs to be set once (unless like me, you update the firmware of your burner). The book type identifies to the player what type of disk is in it. Most players will play DVD-Roms with no problem. However, the book type of a DL disk is DVD+R DL as opposed to DVD-Rom and few players can read that.

Some general comments about the OP's several questions
Remember that reading a burned disc is not part of the original, core specification to play a DVD... so while most players do, now, they are really not required to do so to be able to play a replicated disc
This may (probably is) even more so with dual layer discs... the disc material is different, and a player that will happily read a replicated disc may have problems with a burned disc
There are many messages scattered in the forum, over the past several years, about brands of disc that are better... due both to overall quality control and the type of dye on the disc that is burned by the laser... with the bottom line being that not all discs are going to play in all players with 100% success
As for studio discs... there is software out there that costs many thousands of dollars which do many (up to 9?) encoding passes to get the best, and smallest, possible result to fit more on a disc

  • "Start-up disk does not have enough space to be partitioned"??

Hi there, I hope someone can help.
I've been using bootcamp for a couple of years but recently it has started to play up so I decided to reinstall a fresh. I went into OSX and ran "boot camp assistant" and deleted the partition and start again. For some reason when I try to go though "bootcamp assistant" to set up windows xp again I get an error saying "Start-up disk does not have enough space to be partitioned - You must have 10g of space available" But I check my space available I have 23.5gb free. It's driving me nuts! :/
    Cheers, Mark

It's possible that your drive is sufficiently fragmented that Boot Camp Assistant cannot allocate enough contiguous space to set up the partition. It's also possible that it's simple a directory issue. I would start with repairing the hard drive:
    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
After restarting per the above try using Boot Camp Assistant to allocate a partition. If it still complains then you will need to defragment the drive. You can do that as follows:
    A. Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive.
Source means the internal startup drive.
    B. Boot from the clone.
Restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the large downward pointing arrow button.
    C. Use Disk Utility to erase the internal hard drive.
    D. Restore the clone to the internal hard drive.
    Destination means the internal drive.
    Source means the external drive.
*Note that the Destination and Source drives are reversed when you restore the clone from when you made the clone.*

  • Missing file -- can't find -- see it but does not play -- what went wrong?

I was working on a 2 hour long podcast using 1 track - female voice. When I opened the file, the 1st hour does not play. Get a message saying "missing file." I searched for the file on all disks in all folders -- not there. But you can see the recorded track -- it just says it's missing. The 2nd hour is fine. I have no idea what could have gone wrong. That's a lot of lost work. Any ideas? Thanks.

trying to figure out a recipe for a problem is really good, so congrats on taking the extra step (i wish more people would list their steps, it would make diagnosing problems a lot easier)! unfortunately, no, that should not have caused a problem, it SHOULD have worked as you expected. changing settings, or moving regions between tracks should not cause a problem.
stopped and changed to plain Female voice to be consistent with my other podcasts.
just for future reference, you don't need to worry about that:

My recently bought ipod shuffle 4th gen does not play whole songs synced to it, only the beginning then goes on to the next song.  What have I done wrong?

I changed the iPod to Disk mode and it just blinks orange while it is connected to the PC. It says that it is synched on the PC screen but I thought the blinking orange light means that it isn't. I took it back out of disk mode. The original problem still exists...when I turn it on, the green light stays lit for 5 seconds then there's no light at all....when I press play the lights alternate orange and green indicating no music is loaded which is wrong since it shows all my songs that are loaded when it is connected to my PC. What a mess.

    I posted the information here:
This is could be due to the DRM (Digital Rights Management). Let’s try these steps and check if it helps.
    Rename the DRM folder:
    Step 1:
    a. Start Windows Explorer. To do this, press Windows key + E from desktop.
    b. Click on View and place a check mark on Hidden items.
    Step 2:
Locate the DRM folder on the computer. Typically, the DRM folder is located in the following location.
    a. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM (where C:\ is the system drive).
    b. If you are not able to rename the DRM folder because of Access Denied error, you will have to take permission of the folder.
Refer to this section "Issue 2: I'm unable to access, edit, save, or delete files and folders" from this link to give proper permission to the folder.

    Hi,
Opened a tac and managed to get the resolution of the problem. For those with the same problem reported by me above just follow the procedure below:
    1. uninstall existing SRE-V software
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/services_modules/sre_v/1.5/user/guide/software.html#wp1055364
    2. run sm-hw-util to set sata mode to IDE
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/services_modules/sre_v/1.5/user/guide/software.html#wp1091438
    3. configure a static, 32bit route to point the service module IP address to the SM slot/0 interface
    ip route 255.255.255.255 SM slot/0
    4. install WAAS:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/v421/module/installation/guide/wssmcfg.html#wp47040
