IDVD doesn't burn discs properly!

Hi all,
First of all I'm new to this so if I've missed out any info please let me know. I've always downloaded a lot of films and in the past, have had no problem burning them to discs since I got my mac in 2006. I used to burn them using the "Create New Project" and add in movie, sort menu's etc, but after a while I realised there's no point in all that cause it takes longer and all I really want is the movie on a disc anyway. So I started using the "One Step DVD from Movie" and I would make the discs that way, which I never had any problems with either. I hadn't made any DVDs for a while, possibly 3 or 4 months and when I tried the other day it seems to go through the movie ok, converting the video and audio and then goes to burn the disc, which is where I have the problem. It normally goes to writing video out and things like that but the last couple of times I have tried to burn discs it goes to that as usual then spits out the DVD before going through the entire process. I then have to cancel the process and the DVD I was trying to burn is no longer usable because it seems to have written parts of the movie to it, but not the full movie so it's not possible to watch on a DVD player or even in the mac DVD player. It's very strange, I don't get any error message or anything coming up, it just spits out the DVD and then iDVD freezes and I have to force quit out of it. I'm wondering if it's maybe the version of iDVD that's the problem. Obviously as I've not used the iDVD for a while it will have been automatically updated via the Software Update which I run at least once a week. I'm unsure of the version the last time I used it to make a DVD but the version I have now seems to be the latest one for my system (version 6.0.4). After a few unsuccessful tries at making the DVDs using the One Step DVD, I tried to do it by creating a project first, but it seems to do the exact same thing, go through the whole process (which takes about 2 hours, sometimes longer) and then burn only part of it then I can't use the disc again. Please help, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Debz

Thanks for quick reply and I'm sorry about the long message, I was just trying to explain everything that had happened. Not touched the media at all since I got it, I didn't change any settings or make anything different from when I used to burn discs before. I have about 10GB free on my mac at this moment, but at the time I had about 30GB free, maybe just under. I have been reading other posts on here about discs not burning properly and a couple of the things that have been said is to not have any other applications open, which I didn't and have more than 15GB space free, which I always have had when burning discs.

  • IDVD doesn't burn and goes into infinit loop after ejecting disc

I tried to use iDVD last night for the first time.
I created a small project with two .mov files.
    Preview worked OK.
I clicked on the Burn button. I asked a blank DVD-R disc when asked.
iDVD took long time doing encoding and stuff, but shortly after it started burning, it ejected the disc.
But the progress window won't go away. It just shows
"Current operation: done" and sits there. I clicked on Cancel then it showed "Cleaning up" (or something like that), and it sits there.
The Quit button doesn't do anything. Force-quit menu item doesn't show up, so iDVD must be responding to GUI somehow. I had to go to Activity Monitor to kill it.
The disc it ejected contains zero bytes. It couldn't be read. But it is no longer a blank disk that can be written.
I tried DiskUtility and it also behaved funny. It behaved as though it made a disc with verification on. But the resulting disc is a blank disc, not in the sense of the disc that can be written, but in the sense it contains zero bytes.
What gives? A hardware problem? Can a cheap disc cause the symptom like this? (I'm using the $7 10-disc pack sold at Walgreen.)

Can a cheap disc cause the symptom like this?
Yes it can, although 'cheap' does not enter the equation, just the brand and the quality of the coating!
Most of us here recommend Verbatim and Fuji DVD-R, a few others also use Maxell.
Try saving the iDVD project as a Disk Image, then playing that in DVD Player to check that all is well - saves building up a collection of coasters!
Burning the DVD from a disk image also allows you to select a slower burn speed like 2x or 4x, which usually gives a better burn quality.

  • IDVD will not burn disc after QT update

IDVd used to work just fine. I did software update and updated Quicktime to version 7. I found that my Quicktime Pro key for QT 6 would not work with QT 7. I called Apple support and they told me how to revert back to QT 6. I followed their steps and successfully have QT Pro 6 back, but not my iDVD projects will not burn. It gets to stage 4 multiplex and burn and spins for hours. When I hit cancel, the disc ejects and is unburnt.
I have followed Apples steps to solve a no burn when you upgrade to iDVD 4.0.1 (remove encoded assets) and this does not fix the problem.

    Hi Dennis
There is ways to delete all of QT and then make a clean install but the
easiest way is to download a back to QT 6.5.2 file from Apple support
    and downloads.
I've done this and keep it till I get an upgrade that takes away the old
files before installing the new ones.

  • IDVD won't burn discs

When burning a project to disc it goes through all encoding alright until it comes to the last step: as soon as it hits ‘multiplexng/burning’ IDVD quits. I am left with nothing but an empty, untouched DVD in my (internal) burner.
    Can anyone enlighten me please?

what external devices are currently connected to your mac?
tell me what you've tried so far?
what kind of media did you use?
have you tried a simple restart of your mac with no external 3rd party devices connected?
and have you tried using Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R?
How much available HD space is remaining on the startup volume / HD?

  • IDVD doesn't burn.

So I put together my files, put one in the desired drop zone and clicked on the burn (radioactive) icon. iDVD went through the motions and ejected the DVD. When I went to play it... nothing. I slipped it back into the disk drive and found nothing on the disk.
    What's wrong with the software?

    Hi
    My first two thoughts
    • Shared to Media Browser - BUT as Large or HD - try Medium !
    • audio from iTunes - use to go silent
    - in iTunes
    - Create a new PlayList with needed audio
    - BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
    - use the files on this CD in Your Movie project - I ALWAYS DO - and only use .aiff ever - never .mp3'
    My notes on this:
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.

Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Skipped audio files when burning disc in iDVD.

I burned a DVD using iDVD version 7.0. The audio files sound perfect on the computer but on the disc there are skipped areas noted in three different audio files. I did try different discs and burned discs on both my laptop and my desktop. I have used this program before but never encountered this problem.  Any tips? Thanks

  • I can no longer burn iDVD projects or regular disc images... what's up?

When I try to burn an iDVD project it gets to the burn stage, ejects the disc, then just sits there. It says that it has one minute left. The disc is untouched and still blank.
When I try to save my iDVD project to a disc image then burn it, I get this error:
    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2482/3732704004e249c50ff2o.png
What on earth is going on here? I have read several other reports of similar behavior, but no solutions.

That generally means what it says, for which there are mostly two possible reasons:
Your laser lens is dirty: try cleaning it using a proprietary CD/DVD player lens cleaner (the type with a tiny brush - no liquids please!).
You are using a brand of media that your Superdrive doesn't like (they can by picky!). Most of us here get the most consistent results from using Verbatim or Fuji DVD-R, burned at 2x or 4x.

  • IDVD 08, dual layer DVD doesn't burn last 2 minutes of audio

    Hello,
iDVD 08, dual layer DVD doesn't burn last 2 minutes of audio, I get perfect audio/video through the whole DVD except the last 2 minutes or so...
I'm burning a 3 hour DVD on iDVD 08. I'm burning it only a DL+R Dual Layer disc. I've burned with "high quality" compression, "professional quality" compression. I've even burned the last 2 minutes of the timeline just to make sure it wasn't the quicktime file and the video and audio played fine.
The size of the project in the setting reads the project as 6.5 GB out of the 7.7 available on the disc.
So why does it always cut off the audio the last 2 minutes of the DVD? Any suggestions?

Try making a disc image to the desktop (from the file menu in iDvd) and see if it plays fine with apple's dvd player app.

  • Idvd & dvd studio pro disc not playing properly in other players

    Hi
I have edited a program for the past 3 DAYS, and i have burned the program using IDVD, DVD studio pro, and Toast Titanium.
It plays ok on my G5 and my laptop G4.
And every lousy time i give the disc to the client something different goes wrong.
If it's not a lockup,it's artifacts, and programs jumping forward and backwards between scenes, by itself.
I'm using Memorex and Philips DVD discs.
My Toshiba DVD appliance deck burns the program beautifully and no hiccups.
But the customer wants the lovely menus that apple has designed
Personally i am sick and tired of apple and all the "perfect world marketing" , i had yet to burn a DVD disc with idvd or dvd studio pro with any confidence.
Apple should get into the " Bovine scatology " business, at least when that gets spread something grows despite the smell.
Anyway, i don't know if anyone can help me or not .
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you
    Vic.

While I can understand your frustration, I believe the problem here is in the encoding settings. iDVD doesn't give you much control over specific encoding settings, whereas encoding through Compressor will.
Some specific things are missing from your post. What is your workflow? How are you exporting your timeline? What format is your project (DV, HDV, DVCPRO, PAL, NTSC)? When you built your DVD in Studio Pro, what encoding settings did you use? Do you know where the encoding settings are? What are the settings for your DVD project (SD or HD)?
You would do yourself and your client good to take some time to read over proper DVD mastering workflows. It's really quite painless once you understand how things work. Blaming Apple for this is not a very helpful way to solve your problem.
The tutorial DVDs that came packaged with your install discs will also help. Just look at the lessons for DVD Studio Pro.

  • No audio on idvd burned disc- sound plays on TV fine but not on macbook DVD player

First time posting, so please excuse any naivete
Hi there, I'm having the opposite problem of many of the questions I've read on here- the audio on my burned disc won't play on my computer but is fine on my TV.  I am running the latest version of idvd on a 2008 macbook. The music for the menu is a .m4a file (?) imported from itunes and the movie is an imported project from imovie.  Both play fine in idvd preview and I have burned discs of this project before with no problems.  This time  I burned one disc through idvd, discovered the missing audio, deleted the encoded assets and re- encoded before  saving the disk image and burning another dvd through disk utility. Both dvds are having this problem .  I checked sound on my system preferences, it's on- though I can't find the "main audio" that was mentioned in another thread.  Maybe I don't have enough space on my startup disk?  I've been trashing some things to free up space, but I'm not sure where to check to see how much space I have.
I'm sending these dvds out as part of job applications so they need to be able to play right on whatever the reviewer uses (mac, pc, tv etc.)- is there a way to ensure it will work universally?
    Thanks!

Ok.  This is embarrassing.  Just saw that the sound was turned down on my DVD player on my macbook though not on my computer.  Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best.

  • Burn disc doesn't highlight

I made my first project the other day and want to burn to a DVD-R. The little spin wheel icon doesn't highlight and when I go to the drop down menu the "burn disc" isn't highlighted. A friend who knows Mac's and has worked a lot with computers actually set the project up, but he couldn't figure out what was wrong either.
My project is a slideshow with some music attached. There are about 55 pictures. Since the music lasts about 13 minutes the slideshow does the same.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong.
    Thanks

  • Disc doesn't burn all the way?

This has happened a couple of times. I'll share an iMovie to iDVD and start burning the disc. iDVD goes through the whole process, ejects the DVD and asks me if I'm done or not. I put the DVD in a player, it starts up and shortly into the film just stops. You can tell by looking at the data surface of the DVD itself that it hasn't burned very much. Without adjusting anything, as far as I know, I tried again and the DVD burned fine, and there was much more "written" onto the DVD. Any ideas?

Make your 'burn' out of iDVD to a disk image file (an option under FILE in iDVD).
Use Apple's Disk Utility or Roxio's Toast to burn the disk image to writable media at a low speed (4x or slower). See Burning a disk image file on a CD or DVD in Mac OS X at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
Be sure to use good quality media - Verbatim or Maxell.
