IDVD ejects disk before burn is completed

I made my DVD starting with iMovie '09, Shared it to iDVD '09, added all the niceties and all, then I hit burn... Went through 2hrs and 43 minutes of Preparing, processing menus, slideshows and movies, got to burn with 8 minutes remaining when the DVD (Verbatim DVD-R) ejected, I re-inserted the disk (nothing was burned on it) and the count down continues. The disk doesn't show up in Finder, nor on the desktop, and the progress bar is full blue and marking done, but the timer continues to count down...
What's going on?

No error messages at all.
There are 10 chapters, none with special characters. I should add that I burned a copy last week without any problems at all... since then, the only thing I did to the project was split up a chapter (it was too long for my liking), and added closing credits. I then added a slideshow to the project because there was lots of room left on the DVD (from the first burn). I still won't fill the DVD so size (movie length) is not an issue.
I found a similar thread (ok, identical problem as me) read through all four pages and am troubleshooting from suggestions on that thread... (currently, am creating a disk image of the project.... should be done in 1 hr, 27 minutes). I'll check that with the Apple DVD player and then try to burn the image with disk utility.

IDVD ejects disk before burn is complete

I am attempting to burn a large combined video and data DVD project (6.8 GB), and encountering a problem in which iDVD ejects the disk from the drive just BEFORE the burn reaches completion. The progress bar just sits there at 100% saying that its last task is done, but never actually indicates completion (even if I wait several hours). The only way out is to hit the Cancel button.
I have tried burning both in Best Quality and in Profession Quality Encoding -- both exhibit the same problem. Burning to a disk image completes successfully, but iDVD warns that disks burned from such an image will not work correctly in some players, so it is not useful to me.
As for the DVD produced, the video content is corrupted -- some parts play, but others just get stuck, or worse yet, hang the player. The DVD-ROM data contents seem to be there in the directory -- but the files are corrupted, apparently having never actually been written to the disk.
The drive in use is the one which shipped with this MacPro1,1 (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D). The target disk is a Memorex DVD+R DL. iDVD version 7.0.3 (1110).
I hope someone out there can help, as my project is already overdue...

I had the same problem burning a 2 hour, 33 minute video to an HP DVD+R DL using iDVD 6 on Professional Quality. All of the files are there and nothing is corrupted, but iDVD did eject the disc and showed a "Done" dialog box, but the program still showed that there was "less than one minute remaining" (much like the odd flaw in iMovie when importing a large AVI where the program freezes with "less than one minute remaining," but really requires an additional 20 minutes to finish importing). The disc was burned using the factory superdrive, HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N.
Now the DVD will only play about the first hour of video on any DVD player, including my Mac - it says it's "skipping over damaged area."
If there is any advice out there on how to fix this problem, or any explanation of why iDVD ejects the disc before it is done burning, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I'm a bit confused. I am trying to burn a DVD using iDVD 08. After pressing 'burn', it encodes fine, then starts to multiplex but with about 15 minutes remaining iDVD ejects the disc, claims the DVD is 'done'. The timer still continues to count down until it reaches one minute...
Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone know how to fix it?
My software is up to date.

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
• Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
• Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.

I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

There could be a few reasons why the burn doesn't finish. iDVD needs a lot of hard disk space to create the DVD -- 10-15 Gigs is starting to get low and under 5 G is virtually impossible. Reduce the load on your Mac by quitting other applications while you're trying to burn. Also, you may wish to break down your workflow into two steps (I do this routinely):
1) After you're satisfied in iDVD -- use the Save As Disc Image command rather than going directly to burn. This creates a virtual DVD which you can mount and play on your Mac.
2) Second step creates the physical DVD from the disc image. I use Roxio Toast to copy the disc image, but Apple's Disk Utility also works to burn the disc image. Use good quality discs -- Verbatim is often recommended; I've been happy with Sony DVD-R as well.

I never unplug the external harddrive, and the error message comes up only occassionaly upon startup. Maybe the USB connection gets disrupted enough to cause the computer to see it as disconnected and then reconnected while the iMac is powered.

IDVD ejects disc during burning process of Dual Layer DVD

Hi,
I am trying to burn a 3hr iMovie project of a recent holiday trip. Due to its size, it therefore needs to go on a Dual Disc DVD. I intend to burn 8 copies, one for each member of the holiday.
I successfully burned the first disc in iDVD, however since then, the disc prematurely ejects at the "Multiplexing and Burning" stage, (At the 'Writing Lead In' stage within this) ,usually with 31mins remaining
I am burning at 4x , I have 27GB free space and I am using AONE Plus DVDs. I have read many discussions on here about buying Verbatim DVD-R's which i can do, but with the first dvd burning successfully, I would prefer to try other options before I commit to purchase..

I purchased a pack of Verbatim DVD-R DL Discs, tried the iDVD route and it ejected at the burning and multiplexing stage again. Not only this, but after burning and trying that same failed disc again, it actually contains part of the project, so this disc is now unusable.
After this I went the Disc Utility option as you advised and successfully got to the end until the 'closing session' section. Here, it continues to load and says it is 'closing the session' and i can hear my Disc drive spinning away, stopping, then starting to spin again (this continues to happen forever and ever)
Any suggestions at this stage would be great as i'm truly at a lost cause now..

IDVD 08 (v 7.0.1) ejects disk before the burn process is complete.

I've only been able to burn one disk successfully now the disk ejects before the process is completed. The iDVD screen still shows that the project is still burning. I have about 10g of hard disk space available during the burning process.

Just to add to Sue's excellent advice (Len's too), here's a few way to clear up those 10 GB's she recommended above:
You can clear video files already burned to DVD-R media, burn your iPhoto Library to DVD to clear more space , or even consider clearing languages you won't need on your system with an app like Monolingual. No problems will be created by removing unneeded language files (however it's highly recommend you avoid removing architectures on any intel mac).
Items in the /Library/Packages/ and /Library/Printers/ folders that you don't use can be deleted, and Monolingual can be run to free up more space.

IDVD ejects disc before completion???

I have read that in the past years this is a reoccurring problem . . . but I just don't know how to fix it. The last time I burned a DVD was 2-3 months ago and it worked fine. I've burnt many dvd's before using iDVD and they've all worked well --- except this time. I did everything as normal. Nothing has changed. I have tried 3 different DVD's for the same project (memorex DVD+R, imation DVD+RW, and a no-brand one). In the past I have used the "no-brand" dvd's and also "memorex DVD+R LightScribe" dvd's and they worked fine. So now I'm beginning to think it's either the program or my computer. What happens is at the burn section the blue bar goes all the way and says "done" (before it's even finished multiplexing and burning) with about 8-10 minutes remaining. The laptop then ejects the dvd. The 3 dvd's I tried were blank since their ejection. It's like nothing happened after those hours of burning.
I not only tried 3 different dvd's, but I also tried different projects (to see if the one I was trying to burn was corrupt). One of the projects I already burned a few years ago (but needed a second copy now) didn't work either. The laptop ejected it at the same interval as the other projct did. If it's not the dvd, and it's not the project, then what is it? There has to be something wrong . . . but what?

It had been less than an hour. Deep breath.
Make sure your boot drive (Usually the Macintosh HD) has enough free space to make your DVD. I would suggest you have at least 2x the amount of space that your disk takes up. So a 4.7 GB disk = 10 GB free space needed. A 8.5 GB disk = 18 GB free space needed.
Ensure all your software is up to date (Apple Menu > Software Update).
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
Home > Library > Caches (I remove the whole folder. It will be re-generated upon restart.)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iDVD (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
Ensure your iDVD project and iDVD itself are ok.
__File > Save As Disk Image. If the disk image fails to create, there may be an issue with this project or with the application. If the Disk Image is created, then your project and iDVD are probobly just fine.
Make sure your DVD Burner is ok. Just pop in a blank DVD disk and add something to it (picture, document, whatever), double-click on the disk and click "burn".
__If the disk fails to burn then either the media you are using is not compatible / is bad or the drive has issues.
__Try reseting the PRAM and the SMC just in case the drive is having issues.
Other things to try:
1.) Make sure the DVD disks you are using are compatible with your computer's optical drive. If you use a disk that is not supported by your computer's SuperDrive you may get inconsistent burn results or the drive may reject the disk. You can find out what types and speeds of disks your computer supports by going here and looking for the "SuperDrive" section under your model of computer: http://support.apple.com/specs/
2.) Older drives / players may not be able to read newer types of burnable media. Use DVD-R disks that list a lower speed. Burnable media comes with numbering on the original packaging that indicates the speed of the disk (Usually 1x,2x,3x, etc.). The lower the number the more compatible the disk will be with more DVD players.
3.) Try different brands of media. I personally try to stick with media made by companies with a long history of making recordable media.
4.) Lower the burn speed in iDVD:
iDVD > Preferences > Advanced > Preferred DVD Burning Speed
The lower the number you choose the more compatible the resulting disk will be with more DVD players. It will also increase the amount of time it takes to burn the disk.

IDVD ejects disk during multiplexing and burning

Having burnt many DVDs previously, I have suddenly started struggling.
Having edited in FCE HD v3.5.1, I export to Quicktime and then build the dvd as normal in iDVD.
The project has no errors and then I burn it using Verbatim 16x certified 4.7GB/120 min Advanced AZO+ DVD-R disks.
During Multiplexing and burning (with between 1 and 3 mins left, it ejects the disk saying saying done but nothing is burnt.
To try to remedy this, I have set the burn speed to both 2x and 1x. I have also turned the computer off, removed all cables and battery, held down the power button for 10secs then rebuilt and retried. Still nothing.
I saved a disk image but I don't know how to then make that into a burnt dvd. Any advice on that would be appreciated but moreover, I'm sure I shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops to burn a dvd - Mac's should just work shouldn't they.....?!

Here's even more of an update, with no joy....
to refresh, I have a macbook pro 15" - the older one with the silver keys.
I make 3 min movies in FCE then export using quick time conversion and try to burn with iDVD.
The problem: I can burn data CDs but i can't burn a DVD anymore. This seemed to start after the update to 10.5.7. At that point I tried to fix it with no joy so due to deadlines, used another machine! Now a few months later, i come back to it and still no joy.
I have reset the PRAM
I have reset the CMR
I have upgraded to Snow Leopard
I have sprayed compressed air into the drive
I have reduced the burn speed to 1x
But still I can't burn a dvd. When iDVD goes through the stages, everything is OK until it gets to multiplexing and burning, it says it is 'writing lead in' and has 1 min left (or 2 mins when burning at 1x). Then the blue status line suddenly goes all along and the machine spits the dvd out saying done. (although iDVD does not revert to beginning of the process, it kind of freezes).
idvd version 7.04 if I hadn't said before.
Please help, I'm despairing....

I want to burn a QuickTime movie (slideshow created in Aperture) to dvd using iDVD.
I choose "OneStep DVD from Movie", import the movie, iDVD requests insert a recordable DVD disc, waits for disc to become ready
-- then kicks out the disk and reboots the computer!

Yes it can, although 'cheap' does not enter the equation, just the brand and the quality of the coating!
Most of us here recommend Verbatim and Fuji DVD-R, a few others also use Maxell.
Try saving the iDVD project as a Disk Image, then playing that in DVD Player to check that all is well - saves building up a collection of coasters!
Burning the DVD from a disk image also allows you to select a slower burn speed like 2x or 4x, which usually gives a better burn quality.

I have iDVD and checked it's version 7.1.2 and updated. I have tried doing this 2years ago and one video worked, but another didn't. I didn't bother to know why. This week I tried to burn a video to a DVD and ejects the CD on the step when it says it will "burn" already. I bought a new set of DVDs and this time it won't even accept them and just ejects before it starts. I tried to check in a Windows computer and it was able to burn the CD and video on it. I was so frustrated, as I always show off my mac, but now i failed on a simple procedure.

What MBP model do you have? If the optical drive won't even accept new disks there may be a hardware issue. Run the Apple Hardware test do see if there's a problem with the optical drive: OS X Mountain Lion: Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Hey, I recently got a USB SuperDrive for my MacBook Pro, and while I was importing the final song in an album, it ejects it, cutting the song off midway. It also shows the import screen without any changes, if you could help as to how I can fix this, it'll be a great help, thanks

Everytime I try to burn an iMovie project to a DVD with iDVD, the disc is ejected during the Burning and Multiplexing phase before it's completed.

For months I have been unable to burn any iMovie project to a DVD using iDVD. During the Burning and Multiplexing phase the disc is ejected before it's complete. I went the Genius Bar and after many tests I was told that my disc drive was pretty much dead. The person that helped recommended that I buy an external DVD burner from amazon. I bought the new drive and I can now burn files, but I'm still encountering the same issue burning a movie. Does anyone have any idea what'g going on? I'm extremely frustrated at this point!

when in idvd the disc ejects before multiplexing and burning are completed therefore the disc has issues when viewing. there are damaged areas. Is there a work around to burn the movie?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

If you don't have a SuperDrive you will not be able to burn DVDs.
Did iDVD come preinstalled on your Mac? If it did then you should have a SuperDrive and be able to burn DVDS. Check the Disk Burning section of System Information
to see what you can read and write with your optical drive:
