IDVD Freezes Computer

I'm using iDVD '08 that came preinstalled with my MacBook Pro, which I just got in December. It has all of the current updates. It has 73 GB of free disk space on the hard drive and no other applications running.
When I try to burn to DVD or even write to a disk image, iDVD starts processing menus and stuff and then at some point freezes my entire system to where I have to hold in the power button and reboot. I have tried recreating the project manually, using the Magic DVD option to create the project, etc... The encoding is set to Best Quality and all of the videos are already encoded before I try to start burning (or writing to an .img). The project is large and it is almost big enough to fill up a Double Layer DVD, but there is still free space so that isn't the issue. I thought that perhaps it was so large it just needed time so when it locked up one time I just went to bed. When I woke up the next morning, it was still locked up.
I have tried probably about 15 times in various ways (burn to disk, create image, create manual project, different encoding, etc...) with the same results.

Sorry for being lazy. I searched the forums and found posts that the 7.0 themes are broken. It's rendering the menus now with a 6.0 theme, so hopefully it won't hang this time. I guess I'll know in about an hour.

  • IDVD freezes during buring

More that 50% of the time my iDVD freezes during the burning process ruining a blank DVD. Then in freezes out my computer. I have taken it to the Apple store and they run some diagnostics on it get it to work in the store and when I come home the problem starts up again.
    Help Please!

Could be that your burner is overheating or you don't have enough free disk space to burn a disk. You need at least 5GB to burn. If the burner is overheating, you might try resting the computer for 3-4 hours before attempting a burn. Or maybe running a DVD drive cleaner through it. Might be a simple maintenance issue with the burner or hard drive.
I suppose that you have tried the oft recommended closing down of iDVD and trashing the com.apple.iDVD file located in user/library/preferences, and repairng disk permissions through the disk utility app.
What media are you using? Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R are recommended.
Try burning from a disk image using the disk utility app, at a speed of 4x or lower.
I have no other suggestions beyond recreating the project and/or burning with different media at a slower speed.

  • DL Disks - iDVD Freeze

I am a graphic designer (print), but VERY new to doing anything in video. The iMovie HD project I (personal family video) is 1:10min. in size. When I try to burn a DVD in iDVD, I am prompted for a DL disk - file is too big for SL. I have tried burning this with a DVD+R DL and iDVD ejects the disk with the progress bar only half-completed (in the final "burn" phase, all other steps went fine), but also said the DVD was "finished" in the same dialog box. At this point iDVD freezes and I do a Force Quit.
The DVD plays on the G5 when re-inserted into the Superdrive. But it does not play on any of the 3 DVD players I have - one of which is a brand new Hitachi.
I am using the latest updates to iMovie HD and iDVD v5. But I am tempted to try and open this project on a Macbook Pro running Leopard and iMovie/iDVD v7 to see if that makes a difference.
Is there something else I might be doing wrong that's obvious to more experienced video users?
    Many thanks!

there's something wrong.. iDVD accepts, as Kirk allready told you, 120min max. on a SL DVD-r.. I assume, you incidently try to burn a dataDVD of your project, no videoDVD...
    1) in iMHD - what does the timeline under the huge preview window tells you about the project length?
    2) how to you 'transfer' from iMHD to iDVD? .. I get the best results, by a simple Finder operation, dragging'n dropping the corresponding iMHD-project-file into an open iDVD project..

  • Security update KB3025390 freezes computer

    security update KB3025390 freezes computer
I thought my computer was permanently broken after a routine update. It took over 30 minutes to turn on, getting stuck before and after the sign on screen, could not open any programs or the internet or help, task manager did not work, the internet
did not work. I finally managed to open up installed programs and get it to show me updates. The only update done was windows security update KB3025390. I removed this update, and my computer started working again, as if nothing had happened. My problem
is now whenever my computer is idle, it automatically downloads this update again, and turns into a brick for an hour and a half while I wait patiently for it to allow me to get into the correct screen to get rid of this update. I takes 5-10 minutes after
making a selection for it to open.
I need to either fix it so this update stops freezing my computer or stop my computer from uploading this update.
    Help PLEASE
My computer runs windows 7, with service pack 1
    I have norton internet security

    Hi LizO_774,
This update is for security reason of Internet Explorer 11, so if you have installed Internet Explorer 11, it is not recommended to uninstall it.

  • ISight and iPod freeze computer

On the last two macs I've owned, when I've tried to connect both my iSight and my iPod via firewire, it always ends up completely freezing either my computer, my iPod, or both. Since then I've been sticking to just switching them out depending on which I'm using, but I'm getting tired of that. I'd like to have them both connected all the time. So, does anybody know a way to fix the problem (or maybe an OSX update fixed the problem already?)? Thanks.

A "not uncommon" problem. iSight draws significant power and can be picky about what and how it shares your Mac's Firewire port(s).
See the Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight. FAQ for my best suggestions.

  • Brand new 21"-tilt freezes computer

Tilting the screen a few degrees up causes the screen to go black and freezes computer. Can only recover by rebooting. Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Anyone have any ideas? Computer is 5 days old and was bought through Apple Store.

Wow! That's a new one by me ... weird. Sounds as though something is loose or shorting out inside.  Definitely take it back to the Apple Store ASAP.
If you have installed a lot of configs, apps and programs make a backup to an external disk with Time Machine and/or SuperDuper! ... you can restore to the replacement machine if necessary.
You could also ask the Apple Store to transfer your changes/additions to the replacement.

  • 653x freezes computer

    Hi
we have a problem with a freezing computer. We use a 6534 high speed digital input card and we input data with 20MHz at 32 Bit. The application is running 24/7.
The problem is two or three times a day the computer freezes, we don't know why. The same application is running on other computers without any problems. We expect a jitter on the clock and made tests with a higher clock rate. The maximum what the 6534 can work with is 20MHz. We made a test and at a clock rate of 33MHz the computer freezes.
Can a jitter also freeze the computer?
Why does a NI card freeze the computer?
    Does anyone know a solution
    We use:
    - windows XP
    - NIDAQ 7.1
    - PXI-6534
    - CVI
    - Pentium Dual Core Computer with 2.5GHz
    Thanks
     Oliver

The main question is why can we freeze the computer by increasing the frequency of the 6534 over 20MHz ...
I did not think it throughly and you already mentioned that the max is 20Mhz, so can it be because of this maximum clock rate limit (as shown on the product web page)?
What happens if you lower the freq a little, does the problem disappear completely?

  • IDVD freezes, heats my computer up, and the sceen turns black

I try to make a little half and hour movie on iDVD. When i'm almost complete and about to add chapters to it then my Macbook pro tends to heat up as it makes some nosie, freezes the computer momentarily until the screen appears all black. I assumed that it would go away after a minute or two but I was wrong. I have to manually restart my laptop by holding down the power button. I've attempted to make a dvd about seven times already and the end rest is what i described above.
I am already very frustrated and feel as if i want to throw my laptop out my window...

I replaced my original video card about a month ago with a Radeon 9600 pro. It worked great! Burned many a DVD's. Two nights ago I started to burn more video through iDVD '08. After about 15 to 20 sec.'s of rendering it simply locked my computer up. My screen turned black several times too along with locking up. Started eliminating one thing at a time. Installed my old video card and fixed problem! I suspect a bad video card!

  • IDVD freezing on Leopard

I am designing a project in iDVD. When I attempt to preview the project the screen goes white after the first submenu and everything freezes so that I have to power off. This project must be done by Nov. 9. From reading the discussions it seems to be a newer problem. I did dump com.apple etc. folder and repair permissions. I am not using an external drive. Please help, it's a presentation for 50th wedding anniversary. I have not burned dvd yet as project is not done. This did not happen with former system, just changed to Leopard???? I do have G5 available at work to transfer to and will try tomorrow however I wish to solve the problem on my computer also.

Suggestion: use the G5 at work.
Never make a major software upgrade to your mac without first test driving the new application or update beforehand via an ext. FW HD like this (you'll than me later):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5206559&#5206559
Hate to say it but most of us have to beta test apple software to see how it works on our own particular configuration/s. I realize this is a bit after the fact, but at least you'll have this info for next time.
Falling back to a previous version of the OS (or iDvd update) without using the above approach is complicated to say the least.

  • IDVD Freezing! AHHHH!

Hi! I have a PM G4 Quicksilver 733 mhz with 384MB SDRAM and I have iDVD 5. Every time I open iDVD and try to change the theme it freezes. This is really frustating and I have to get a DVD done by the 21st and I can't get anything done. I'm not sure if it's not enough memory, or the fact that I have only 4.43 GB left on my hard drive. Please help!
Power Mac G4, 733 mhz, 384 MB SDRAM, 256 KB L2 cache, 133mhz bus speed, GeForce MX AGP,CD- RW drive,   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Beau:
As you can see, you are using the bare minimum for iLife 05.
    Life ’05 System Requirements
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3 (400MHz or faster), G4, or G5 processor
600MHz G3 or faster required for GarageBand
G4 or G5 required for GarageBand software instruments and advanced photo editing in iPhoto 5
733MHz G4 or faster required for iDVD
1GHz G4 or faster required to use HD features of iMovie HD
256MB of physical RAM (512MB recommended)
512MB RAM required to use HD features of iMovie HD
Mac OS X v10.3.4 or later
Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later required to use HD features of iMovie HD
Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later required to work with RAW photos (iPhoto 5)
I suggest you run a disk repair and permissions verification first. And by all means, do not have any other program running while you are using iDVD.
You may think about adding a bit more RAM as well..

CONCLUSION: IT IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE WITH THE DRIVE
Test 2- Themes 05 using the same imovie burned fine(only had 1 rendering menu)
Test 3- Theme 05 using same I movie failed when there is more than 1 of 1 rendering menu (example 1 of 2 the renderning fails on 2)
Test 4- Theme 05 with same imovie (only worked if 1 of 1 rendering menu and failed if rendering menu consisted of 1 of 2 rendering menu)

Test 9-Theme 07 with same I move (only worked if 1 of 1 rendering menu and failed if rendering menu consisted of 1 of 2 rendering menu)
Idvd can not handle more than 1 rendering menu
I have tested this with a total of 9 dvds and the only change are the themes.(used the same I movie in each test)

  • IDVD freezes in the "Media" category

When I used iDVD '08 for the first time on my new iMac, the application would freeze when I clicked the "Media" button. I've tried both reinstalling iDVD with the restore disk and restoring the operating system. The problem still exists. Anyone know how to fix it?

Do you turn your computer off after each use?
and do you use an ext. HD/s?
if so, then you likely aren't allowing ample time for your mac to index your HD/s
Suggest you NOT turn off your computer for the next 24 hours while your mac updates itself in terms of indexing. DO NOT allow the HD to sleep (see eneregy saver controls are set to NEVER) while this takes place , otherwise you may wind up waiting twice as long for this procedure to run its course.
Btw, it's possible to change the indexing of Spotlight.
Do the following - go to System Preferences>Spotlight now deselect the items you don't need Spotlight to index for you.
Other items to try are things like disconnecting any ext. HD's or 3rd party devices while working with iDvd to see if this helps.
Also repair permissions from apple's disc utility plus drag and drop the plist for iDvd to the trash and restart your mac.

  • IDVD freezes, unusable

I have created a slideshow video with music in Aperture 3.1.1. I have exported it to iTunes (Movies), MobileMe Gallery, AppleTV.
I am trying to make a playable dvd using iDVD, using Magic DVD. I can import from iTune Movies, the Magic DVD project is created. I click Burn, insert a bland DVD, the process starts and then computer freezes "Rendering assests" (something like that).
Requires a hard Re-start. I have repaired permissions and trashed iDVD plist and restarted.
But I must be crazy because the iDVD burn attempt always fails at that same point.

14 GB - this is the drive that contains your operating system that boots your computer, right?
That may very well NOT be enough for the space iDVD uses as scratch space during encoding.
