IDVD freezes when encoding audio

Whenever the project is done encoding the video, it freezes right when it gets to the encoding audio process.

for over 10 hours
New info...
I would suggest Sharing as QuickTime Full Quality and drag that file into a new iDVD project, then create a disk image and then burn. If you have chapter markers, they will be lost. Import that file into a new iMovie project, add chapter markers, send to (new) iDVD project.
File/Save as Disc Image...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/18.html
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Help!! idvd freezing when rendering audio

PLEASE..I need help!! I make a movie for my students at the end of the school year. I put together a movie in imovie and then sent it to idvd. When I finished with the idvd part and went to burn it, my idvd would stop responding after about an hour when it came to the final part when rendering the audio. I find I have to force quit the program and start over. I've tried it 4 times and it happens every time in the same spot. I never had this happen before. Thanks for any help you can give me!!

    Like I said!
    This question is frequently asked!
iDVD is probably not 'hanging'. Disregard any messages that iDVD is not responding. It is. Do not force quit.
Encoding audio is the slowest part of rendering, and can take many hours. Great patience, even an intermittent alternative hobby, is called for.
Make sure no other application is running, make sure you have not set the hard disk to go to sleep and that the screen saver will not come on. Leave it overnight, or have a 36 hole game of golf.
Sooner or later iDVD will finish!

  • IDVD Freezes when Rncoding Audio

I have been trying to burn a movie created in iMovie HD. Everything goes well through to the end of "Encoding Video". When the program starts to encode audio it locks up.
    Any suggestions? Thanks ...

    Hi Leo,
Just as a guideline how long are you waiting before considering it as "locked up"? If iDVD is set as Best Quality in the preferences, depending on the size of your movie it can take literally hours to encode. To get the project to encode in the background while you are working you can choose Best Performance from the preferences instead and check the background encoding box.
Try kicking it off before you go to bed and see if it worked by the morning. If you don't want to waste disks you can choose "File --> Save As Disk Image" and this will write an img file instead. Theoretically if the image saves a DVD should burn from the project also.
    Hope this helps.

  • IDVD does crash when encoding audio

I have been reading a large number of posts regarding iDVD freezing, having a spinning beachball, and hanging while encoding audio. I have not been able to find a post where it discusses the crashing/unexpected quitting of iDVD. I have tried a couple of times to get the burning process started, as I thought it may have been a small glitch, but to no avail.
Should I follow the steps marked out in:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=335417&tstart=30
I usually complete the final process of iDVD with all Energy Saving and Screen Saver preferences set to "Never". I usually would delete encoded assets, but I did not have time before I went to work to try a third time.
This is the first time it has happened to me and I have completed about three projects successfully since updating to iDVD 6.0
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
    Rodger

SUCCESS (But it took a while!)
When I arrived home form work, the first thing I did was to remove Flip4Mac using its uninstaller. This had no effect. iDVD still crashed bringing up the crash report dialogue box.
So I followed the instructions from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=335417&tstart=30
I also repaired permissions (nothing to report there) and deleted encoded assests. Finally, I replayed my DVD project in the iDVD's preview/test section. The audio was out with the video. For some strange reason, my brain told me that the syncing between audio and video was the main thing to blame. So, I had a quick think and decided to remove all the fade ins and fade outs from my original iMovie project, remove all chapter markers, save the project, replace the chapter markers and then open the original iDVD file shared from this iMovie project. Then, clicked OK to update file to match, deleted encoded assests.
I do not know which part worked for me, but I woke this morning with a completed DVD (which is still to be tested in a DVD player).
Thanks for all the assistance and advice, I'll keep this post unresolved in case someone else has a full crash of iDVD.

PS I think Apple are a little sick of seeing my crash report coming through with the answer to "What were you doing when the application crashed?" being "Just trying to encode audio!!"

  • When Burning IDVD hangs at Encoding Audio

    I have a 2 GHz PowerPC G5 iMac
    1.5 GB DDR SDRAM
    SuperDrive - Double Layer dvds
This is my first time using IDVD - I have a 2 hour movie that I am trying to burn.
It hangs and gives me the multicolored wheel when it is trying to encode the music during the burn process. It took about 5 hours to get to the point that it is now, and then an extra 3 since the multicolored wheel has been up. I have read other posts and some say, let it spin, and eventually it will finish. But I am not sure if they mean when the multicolored wheel is showing. Does anyone know what I need to do? I am desperate for HELP!!

Strange how I can't edit my post now even though it's only been half an hour...
I checked on the progress of the burn and the audio was finally encoded after about five to ten minutes of the "spinning lollipop". It said it was encoding the audio and seemed to hang, but when I went back to check on it the DVD was already burned. I looked for other advice on these boards and people recommend taking the MOV file from your iMovie project and dumping that directly into iDVD instead of exporting from iMovie to iDVD. To do that, control-click (or right-click) on your iMovie project icon in the Finder. Go to Shared Movies > iDVD and find the MOV file in that folder.
Many people have had this problem with iDVD hanging at the "Encoding Audio" stage, but if you leave it long enough, it will eventually finish. I think it's just a bug with the progress bar.
    Good luck.
P.S. the movie that I was burning is only about 7 minutes long. I had first tried burning it from my PowerMac G4 but moved to an iMac G5 for my final attempt at burning and it now works. The first time around on the G4 the audio never finished encoding but after moving the iDVD project (and all the support files), it burned the DVD without any problems.

  • CS4 freezes when editing audio.

    Hello All,
I have a client that has a workstation that freezes when she edits audio in CS4.  I have seen it happen and what it does is it keeps playing the audio but Adobe CS4 freezes until the audio is done playing or when she kills CS4.  I have reinstalled Adobe CS4, talked to Adobe technical support, reloaded her workstation with Vista 64 bit, put in another hard drive for the page file, and ran through every troubleshooting document I could find on the forums and Adobes website.  Her workstation is a Core2Quad 2.4GHz and 4GB of ram with Vista 64 bit.
This is an on-going issue that needs to be solved ASAP and any help would be appreciated from other users.  I do not want to resort to calling Adobe technical support as I was not satisfied with their knowledge of their product.
    Thank you,
    Brian
Edit:  Harm Millaard chime in if you have any suggestions.  You seem to be very helpful on these forums.  Also, you have a very impressive computer setup and props to you for putting it together.

While I feel that the Assets, or the Project, are probably the culprits here, you might want to look over this ARTICLE on "tuning up" one's NLE computer. Might be something useful in it - if not now, then for later.
    Good luck,

  • Quicktime Freezes When Recording Audio

Quicktime froze one time when trying to record audio, so I restarted my Mac. It still froze, so I tried repairing by using the uninstall program.
It still froze, so I uninstalled it and re-downloaded it. It's still freezing. I'm starting to think it's something in my system files but I don't really know.
The program freezes when I click the record button.
I really need help because it's the only recording program that doesn't slightly slow down my audio, so I really need it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Please, I really need help.

  • IDVD freezes when I try to burn a disk image.

I have a MacBook Pro and am running 10.4.8. I used IMovie HD 6.03 to make a movie from digital photographs with audio. I used IDVD to create a DVD. When I burned the disk using IDVD 6.03, the DVD was pixelated. I read in a thread in the discussion on IDVD that if I create a disk image and then burn it with Toast at a lower spped, you get a better result. I tried several rimes to create a disk image, It encodes fine through the menu, when it gets to encoding the movie, the program freezes. I have closed all other programs and turned off the airport. I also have over 30 Gb of memory. Any sugestions on what is causing this problem or how to fix it. I also tried creating the disk on a 13" MacBook - it also froze.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Thanks.
I actually read a post after mine that showed a lnk that says the same thing. I will give it time. I gues the reason I was concerned is that when I burned the DVD to using IDVD it did not take very long. However, when I tried to burn a disk image, I left it sit for 2 hours and it was stuck on encoding the audio. I will try again and let it sit.

  • IDVD freezes when burning

    Hi all,
My iDVD is playin up. I've created a beautiful movie (12mins long) but when i tell iDVD to burn it does all the processing and encoding but it freezes just before it starts burning. I tried to burn it 4 times and nothing I did helped. I did close down all the other programs not needed to free up CPU space but it didn't help.
I also had the problem of I was using a DVD-R which disk utility said was locked and unwritable but, in system profiler, the CD drive says it will burn DVD-Rs and that the media in it is a DVD-R and that it is writable. I dunno what's wrong. please help
    thanks,
    Sam

when I start the burning project until it gets to the audio, then i get the spinning disc icon and the application freezes. I right click on the idvd icon and it says the application is not responding, so I force quit...
Please don't 'panic' - it really HASN'T frozen. Let it alone and ignore the application is not responding thing - it's lying to you.
Encoding can take several hours and often seems to stall during the audio encoding process. Have patience and let iDVD do it's thing!

  • IDVD failing to encode audio

Help ! I am making a DVD for the high school baseball team and the banquet is next week. I did the same thing 2 years ago without incident. My iMovie is a slideshow of digital photos set to music. When transferring to iDVD, it encodes the menu, encodes the video (takes 2 hours) and then fails to encode the audio. The colored circle spins for a few minutes. The burn circle stops spinning. My laptop (Powerbook G4) spits out the DVD disc blank. I tried taking off all songs expect one that I used 2 years ago without incident. Did not work either. I am very very disappointed. The kids were going to love this. Any ideas ? If worst case scenario occurs, is there someplace (I live in Ann Arbor) I can take the iMovie file to and have them make a DVD ? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am working with iMovie 5 and iDVD 5. Will it help to upgrade to ILife 06 ? Thanks

I only have 1.21 GB at this time because I
transferred the iMovie to my laptop. Having said
that, the reason I put it on my laptop is that I made
the iMovie on an external hard drive with over 300
GB. The problem first occurred on the external hard
drive (Western Digital). I thought moving it to my
laptop might make a difference. It did not.
iDVD needs to use your start-up hard drive for many things when creating a DVD. You need to freeup at least 10 GB (15 or 20 would be better) for things to work.
My son plays for Huron. We split with Pioneer. I live in A2
but went to ND. Are you still willing to help me ?
Certainly - but since I live near Rochester, NY all I can do is offer written support here in the Forum
Just as a general rule of thumb, OS-X needs something like 10 to 15% of your drive kept free of OS use. So if you have a 60 GB drive, you will need something like 6 GB free JUST FOR THE OS! That's why I said you need to freeup about 10 to 20 GB.
The problem first occurred on the external hard drive (Western Digital)
What is the format on this drive? They usually ship with a Windows format and need to be reformatted to a Mac format to work well with all things Mac OS-X.

  • IDVD freezes when attempting to reconnect files

I have moved all of the files from my iDVD project onto a new hard drive. When attempting to reconnect audio/video files in "Project Info" it freezes every time without ever connecting the files. Photo files connect fine. I've even moved the project back onto the original hard drive with no luck.
This is a complex iDVD project with chapters, so it would never be the same if I have to redo it- I need to make exact duplicates.
I cannot reinstall as I no longer have disks.
    Thanks!

Do you have a burned disk copy of the DVD project?  If so just make a disk image of it with Disk Utility and burn the addtional copies from the disk image.
    Otherwise give this a try:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
    User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
    User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

  • IDVD Freezes when creating new project!?

    Hi all,
When I open iDVD, it give me the main screen, I click Create New Project. The window comes up, but it has trouble opening the stuff inside the window, and does the dreaded rainbow ball.. Never comes out of it. I have to force quit it to get out.
-for any ppl who want it.. here is a sample of it freezing useing Activity Moniter. http://home.comcast.net/~samkirsch/iDVD.txt
    please help!

    Quit iDVD.
Locate a file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and get rid of it. iDVD will create a new one the next time it runs. Empty the trash and run a permission repair using the Disk Utility.
The files can be found here:
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iDVD.plist

  • IDVD freezes when attempting to make a disk image

I created an iMovie, edited it and added music. I clicked Create DVD within iMovie and created my .dvdproj. I then attempted to create a Disk Image in iDVD and the application just keeps freezing during the Process Movies stage. What would be causing this??? This is becoming increasingly frustrating.
I have 37G of space available on my iBook and 92G of space on my external hard drive. I attempted the last disk image from the external hard drive. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
    Mike

I don't recall if I formatted the Lacie exteranl hard drive when I purchased it, and I now have files/photos, etc saved to it.
problem is, formatting a drive means erasing all content... using Disk Utitily, choose connected drive - you can read in the lower third, how it is formatted.. if FAT32, you have to save the data "somewhere else" (me wiseguy..burn some data DVDs..), and then format to hfs/MacOsExtended, most ext.hd are out-of-the-box formatted for PC, as said, that works with a Mac, but not with video files....
Yes, some of the music was purchased through iTunes.
    AHA!!
    … there's a time consuming, legal workaround:
do you know, how to create audioCDs with iTunes? link to Apple doc
make a playlist of your purchased tunes, burn an audioCD..
then, sorry to say that, re-import from that audioCD back to iTunes/or drag'n drop files directly into your iM project's timeline...
this process is needed, to get rid of the copyprotection which is installed inside the aacs you bought from iTMS... that workaround is legal and Apple recommended (lost that link to some Apple doc...anyone?)
... I've read here many people experiencing that "frozen" iDVD because of usage of iTMS music, I don't know why Apple has not implemented some "warning message" in iDVD/iM, telling the average user that issue ("you try to use copy protected music - please follow advise... - something like that..
    happy copying!
PS: 29Gb is fine... iDVD needs 10 - 15GB for some temp files (which are not shown in finder and will vanish after burning), and your Mac needs some 5Gb to be a happy Mac...
