IDVD Freezing! AHHHH!

Hi! I have a PM G4 Quicksilver 733 mhz with 384MB SDRAM and I have iDVD 5. Every time I open iDVD and try to change the theme it freezes. This is really frustating and I have to get a DVD done by the 21st and I can't get anything done. I'm not sure if it's not enough memory, or the fact that I have only 4.43 GB left on my hard drive. Please help!
Power Mac G4, 733 mhz, 384 MB SDRAM, 256 KB L2 cache, 133mhz bus speed, GeForce MX AGP,CD- RW drive,   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi Beau:
As you can see, you are using the bare minimum for iLife 05.
Life ’05 System Requirements
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3 (400MHz or faster), G4, or G5 processor
600MHz G3 or faster required for GarageBand
G4 or G5 required for GarageBand software instruments and advanced photo editing in iPhoto 5
733MHz G4 or faster required for iDVD
1GHz G4 or faster required to use HD features of iMovie HD
256MB of physical RAM (512MB recommended)
512MB RAM required to use HD features of iMovie HD
Mac OS X v10.3.4 or later
Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later required to use HD features of iMovie HD
Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later required to work with RAW photos (iPhoto 5)
I suggest you run a disk repair and permissions verification first. And by all means, do not have any other program running while you are using iDVD.
You may think about adding a bit more RAM as well..

  • IDVD freezes during buring

More that 50% of the time my iDVD freezes during the burning process ruining a blank DVD. Then in freezes out my computer. I have taken it to the Apple store and they run some diagnostics on it get it to work in the store and when I come home the problem starts up again.
    Help Please!

Could be that your burner is overheating or you don't have enough free disk space to burn a disk. You need at least 5GB to burn. If the burner is overheating, you might try resting the computer for 3-4 hours before attempting a burn. Or maybe running a DVD drive cleaner through it. Might be a simple maintenance issue with the burner or hard drive.
I suppose that you have tried the oft recommended closing down of iDVD and trashing the com.apple.iDVD file located in user/library/preferences, and repairng disk permissions through the disk utility app.
What media are you using? Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R are recommended.
Try burning from a disk image using the disk utility app, at a speed of 4x or lower.
I have no other suggestions beyond recreating the project and/or burning with different media at a slower speed.

  • DL Disks - iDVD Freeze

I am a graphic designer (print), but VERY new to doing anything in video. The iMovie HD project I (personal family video) is 1:10min. in size. When I try to burn a DVD in iDVD, I am prompted for a DL disk - file is too big for SL. I have tried burning this with a DVD+R DL and iDVD ejects the disk with the progress bar only half-completed (in the final "burn" phase, all other steps went fine), but also said the DVD was "finished" in the same dialog box. At this point iDVD freezes and I do a Force Quit.
The DVD plays on the G5 when re-inserted into the Superdrive. But it does not play on any of the 3 DVD players I have - one of which is a brand new Hitachi.
I am using the latest updates to iMovie HD and iDVD v5. But I am tempted to try and open this project on a Macbook Pro running Leopard and iMovie/iDVD v7 to see if that makes a difference.
Is there something else I might be doing wrong that's obvious to more experienced video users?
    Many thanks!

there's something wrong.. iDVD accepts, as Kirk allready told you, 120min max. on a SL DVD-r.. I assume, you incidently try to burn a dataDVD of your project, no videoDVD...
    1) in iMHD - what does the timeline under the huge preview window tells you about the project length?
    2) how to you 'transfer' from iMHD to iDVD? .. I get the best results, by a simple Finder operation, dragging'n dropping the corresponding iMHD-project-file into an open iDVD project..

  • IDVD freezes when I try to burn a disk image.

I have a MacBook Pro and am running 10.4.8. I used IMovie HD 6.03 to make a movie from digital photographs with audio. I used IDVD to create a DVD. When I burned the disk using IDVD 6.03, the DVD was pixelated. I read in a thread in the discussion on IDVD that if I create a disk image and then burn it with Toast at a lower spped, you get a better result. I tried several rimes to create a disk image, It encodes fine through the menu, when it gets to encoding the movie, the program freezes. I have closed all other programs and turned off the airport. I also have over 30 Gb of memory. Any sugestions on what is causing this problem or how to fix it. I also tried creating the disk on a 13" MacBook - it also froze.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Thanks.
I actually read a post after mine that showed a lnk that says the same thing. I will give it time. I gues the reason I was concerned is that when I burned the DVD to using IDVD it did not take very long. However, when I tried to burn a disk image, I left it sit for 2 hours and it was stuck on encoding the audio. I will try again and let it sit.

  • IDVD freezes, heats my computer up, and the sceen turns black

I try to make a little half and hour movie on iDVD. When i'm almost complete and about to add chapters to it then my Macbook pro tends to heat up as it makes some nosie, freezes the computer momentarily until the screen appears all black. I assumed that it would go away after a minute or two but I was wrong. I have to manually restart my laptop by holding down the power button. I've attempted to make a dvd about seven times already and the end rest is what i described above.
I am already very frustrated and feel as if i want to throw my laptop out my window...

I replaced my original video card about a month ago with a Radeon 9600 pro. It worked great! Burned many a DVD's. Two nights ago I started to burn more video through iDVD '08. After about 15 to 20 sec.'s of rendering it simply locked my computer up. My screen turned black several times too along with locking up. Started eliminating one thing at a time. Installed my old video card and fixed problem! I suspect a bad video card!

  • IDVD freezes after burn

After many successful DVD burns, my iDVD has developed a problem! It only allows 2 DVDs to be burnt. Then, it freezes. The display is: "burn" highlighted with blue "task" bar complete. And, message is "cleaning up" followed by "done" underneath blue bar. However, at this point, I cannot cancel or close iDVD window. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Just to add to Sue's excellent advice ..... might also be that your burner is over heating after multiple burns. try allowing more time in between burns to avoid system freeze (that or invest in an ext. DL FW Burner).
You can make your own burner like I did from a pioneer S-Drive 110U, 111, or 112 mounted within a standard FW enclosure like this:
By sdmacuser, shot with Digimax A7/Kenox D7 at 2007-01-31

  • IDVD freezes during audio encoding

    Hi there,
I'm trying to burn a movie (over 90 minutes long) and everything goes well until it begins to encode audio (last step but one) - the application freezes without any apparent reason. I've tried it 3 times already and always the same.
I'm on a brand new MacBook Pro with standard configuration (1.83 MHz, 512 MB RAM). Any ideas as what needs to be changed tweaked?
    thank you,
    Pablo

Yes, it is 16 bit. What's more some other strange thing happened: I had some 59 MB free on my hard drice. I imported some 27 MB of video and started working on it and after doing a bit of editing decided to go to iDVD and burn a DVD (actually I wanted to save an image so I can burn it faster on my external burner). The iDVD file was slightly over 3 GB - now it's removed since creating the DVD failed miserably. So I did quick math: 59 - 27 = 32. That's how much space I should have available on my hard drive. But guess what? It's only 15 GB left there. Somehow 17 GB gone missing!!! How do I get it back? I'm really afraid of trying iDVD again as making another DVD can render my MacBook Pro unusable...
    Please, help!
    Pablo

  • IDvd freezes during 2nd -3rd burn

When burning DVDs with IDVD the first dvd burns ok
but on the 2nd -3rd try the process freezes up. The Dvd is ejected but not completely burned. I have to force quit and start the entire process over- takes hour+
The problem started after upgrading to iLife 06. Can this be apart of the issue?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hello Tony,
glad you got it up and working.
I'm surpised since the superdrive is a new one, barely 3 months old
I have never had this problem, but I don't think it depends on the age of the burner or is an indication of a malfunction .... you're just pushing the burner a bit to hard.
Should I upgrade to 10.4.4? If so, what is the name of the upgrade package?
I would recommend upgrading to Tiger (OS X 10.4). You'll have to buy the new OS, then get the updates (if necessary). I believe the most recent is 10.4.7.
I will try the disc image process...
That is definitely the way to work in iDVD. Not only does it minmize burn errors, but it also produces a file that can be stored on your HDD for future burns.
    hope this helps

  • IDVD Freezing

I've been trying to burn a DVD-R with a slideshow of approx 90 slides with audi and transitions. It seems to get through the encoding portion fine, but when it gets to writing the DVD it freezes after a small porion of the progrees bar. I've had to force quit after allowing it to burn for 5 hours. Anybody have a similar experience and or workaround?

    Kurt,
    Welcome to iDVD Discussions.
Is all of your RAM from Apple?
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (not the .img, the one below) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down. Select a burn speed. Your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
b Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
Verbatim DVD-R (not DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW) burned at 4X or slower is very reliable.
Audio encoding process can appear frozen for a few minutes (30?):

  • Idvd freezing before it starts encoding audio

Hi everyone, i was wondering if someone could help me with a problem i'm having with idvd. Everytime (6 times so far) my dvd is encoding the video it will suddenly freeze just before it starts audio encoding. What does this mean and is there any way to prevent it?

    This question is frequently asked!
iDVD is probably not 'hanging'. Disregard any messages that iDVD is not responding. It is. Do not force quit.
Encoding audio is the slowest part of rendering, and can take many hours. Great patience, even an intermittent alternative hobby, is called for.
Make sure no other application is running, make sure you have not set the hard disk to go to sleep and that the screen saver will not come on. Leave it overnight, or have a 36 hole game of golf.
Sooner or later iDVD will finish!

  • IDVD freezing on Leopard

I am designing a project in iDVD. When I attempt to preview the project the screen goes white after the first submenu and everything freezes so that I have to power off. This project must be done by Nov. 9. From reading the discussions it seems to be a newer problem. I did dump com.apple etc. folder and repair permissions. I am not using an external drive. Please help, it's a presentation for 50th wedding anniversary. I have not burned dvd yet as project is not done. This did not happen with former system, just changed to Leopard???? I do have G5 available at work to transfer to and will try tomorrow however I wish to solve the problem on my computer also.

Suggestion: use the G5 at work.
Never make a major software upgrade to your mac without first test driving the new application or update beforehand via an ext. FW HD like this (you'll than me later):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5206559&#5206559
Hate to say it but most of us have to beta test apple software to see how it works on our own particular configuration/s. I realize this is a bit after the fact, but at least you'll have this info for next time.
Falling back to a previous version of the OS (or iDvd update) without using the above approach is complicated to say the least.

I have tested this with a total of 9 dvds and the only change are the themes.(used the same I movie in each test)

  • IDVD freezing when trying to work with old project

I am running iLife '09 and OS X 10.6.2. I burned this project successfully in the past 12/09 after creating it, however trying to burn and work with the project after some changes and iDVD will freeze or give me a grey screen and crash. Where can I look to see the cause of this? Crash Reporter has no logs of the events.
    cheers!
    James

    Hi
There is a bug in iDVD'09 (at least)
If You make an iDVD project
Then go back to Your movie and make a small change
Then open iDVD again - it will notice this and say to Update or Cancel
    NEITHER of them works.
ONLY one medicine - Make a brand new iDVD project and re-import Your movie.
Sorry - Non has come up with a more elegant solution. (at all)

  • IDVD Freezes / Spinning Ball of Death

So my iDVD (v5) was pretty much freezing and giving me the spinning ball of death everytime I tried to either create a new project or open an old one. Therefore... my solution was to go out and purchase iLife 6 (w/ the new iDVD 6) thinking would solve the problem. That was not the case.
Pretty much after opening iDVD and selecting; "new project"... the program loads the themes and then displays the main iDVD window... but then spins the ball and does not stop. I am forced to "force quit".
I looked on the Discussion boards and attempted several fixes...
    - erasing the iDVD themes and reinstalling
    - deleted iLife and reinstalling
    - creating a new user account
    - using Disk Utl to repair permissions
    - finally erasing the plist preferences.
None of these solutions worked. All my other iLife and Final Cut Pro Studio applications work just fine (including DVD Studio Pro - which is my work around right now).
My final solution may be to reisntall TIGER... but I really don't want to do that. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!!!!
This issue is similiar to the following posting... but those solutions did not work:

Have you tried cleaning out the system caches using OnyX? You can download it at: http://macapple.free.fr/forum/index.php. I have had the same problems. I was trying to use Memorex 16x media. I followed all the suggestions (closing all applications, especially the browser, deleting the iDVD plist file, running Onyx, and repairing permissions, plus switching to 8x media). I have had consistent success since.
I use an external firewire LaCie d2 burner which has a NEC 3500A. But I am still using iDVD 5. I hope this will help.

  • IDVD Freezes when creating new project!?

    Hi all,
When I open iDVD, it give me the main screen, I click Create New Project. The window comes up, but it has trouble opening the stuff inside the window, and does the dreaded rainbow ball.. Never comes out of it. I have to force quit it to get out.
-for any ppl who want it.. here is a sample of it freezing useing Activity Moniter. http://home.comcast.net/~samkirsch/iDVD.txt
    please help!

    Quit iDVD.
Locate a file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and get rid of it. iDVD will create a new one the next time it runs. Empty the trash and run a permission repair using the Disk Utility.
The files can be found here:
