IDVD ghost in the machine!

I imported my iMovie to iDVD and it was exactly the way I wanted it to be. But upon previewing it in iDVD there is a strange 3 second visual 'still' that appears in the same place every time. It's all gray with black vertical broken lines, squares and dots.
It's not in the original at all and it's nothing that I put in there. I've re-imported the movie to iDVD but the strange picture still appears. How do I get rid of it? What the **** is it? It only appears in iDVD mode. It does not appear in iMovie mode. re-importing does not help.

Not sure if this will solve your particular prob (trashing prefs, as suggested, is also a good idea) but this sometimes help:
1)To create a disc image, once you have your iDVD project the way you want, use Save As Disc Image under the File submenu. It will now go thru all the encoding as normal, (you don't need to insert a DVD) but instead of burning the project,it will create a dmg disc image file to a spot of your choice
2) Once you have your disc image, you can open it in your Mac's Disc Utility (Applications>Utilities>Disc Utilities). There, you will see a Burn button; it will ask you to point it to your saved Disc Image. Follow directions to burn the DVD (this will be speedy since you have already done the encoding)
Again, not sure if this will help with your particular issue, but it sometimes help to eliminate certain iDVD insecurities

  • 10.4.3 Upgrade - FANS FIXED: the 'ghost in the machine' syndrome is solved!

I'm posting this topic here just to help anyone else experiencing the same problem.
After upgrading to 10.4.3 the fans on my G5 would turn themselves on every 10 seconds or so for a little while, and all the while it seemed like the hard drive was working, even when no apps were opened up. The machine was noticeably slower because of this, and this went on for week. After reading the forums I had reset the SMU, reset PRAM and nvram, changed the performance to highest in preferences-energy saver-options yet the problem was persistent.
Accidentally I realised that spotlight was indexing the machine and taking forever to even calculate the time needed to do that, ie for weeks it was doing this and not indicating how long the indexing should take to complete.
This article mentions the indexing and slowing of the mac after upgrading the os: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302223
but what helped my issue was this article, how to re-index: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301562
now after dragging the 3 volumes of my mac onto the privacy window of spotlight, in preferences, followed by removing them, the mac restarted the re-indexing process and after only about 15 mintues the whole thing settled down. Now my G5 is quiet as a whisper again. And fast too!
Other cases may be due to different reasons, but neither I nor the apple tech support thought of the problem having anything to do with spotlight-indexing.

    Hi, roobp57 —
Thanks for posting about your conundrum and its solution.
Here's hoping it helps other folks with similar puzzles!
    Warm regards,

  • After installing Mountain Lion, there's a ghost in the machine.

Pages open and close by themselves, the cursor jumps around the open page.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check for unknown or forgotten input devices. Disconnect any USB input devices that you aren't using.
    3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    8. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    9. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    10. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • Ghost in the machine (Flash Player 9)

I have a strange problem on my Windows 7 machine that I can't seem to resolve. There is a version of Flash Player 9 r124 that exists on my computer that I cannot remove. While this might not normally be a problem, the real issue is that any time I open a .swf, it defaults to this version of Flash, even though I have Flash Player 10 installed. If I try to tell windows to open it using Flash Player 10, but it acts as i it is the same application and makes no difference. If I want to run the .swf in 10, I have to open 10 manually and open the .swf from there. I have no way of tracing where the Flash Player 9 client actually is, (I've looked in windows/System32/macromed as well as windows/WOW64/macromed and it is not there).
I have tried using the flash uninstaller from adobe, which does fine for removing Flash Player 10 but for some reason does nothing to remove this rogue copy of 9. Short of going through every entry of "Flash" in the registry or reformatting, I was hoping someone would have something to suggest.
tldr: I can't uninstall Flash Player 9, I have tried almost everything I can think of/google search, please help.
    Thanks.

Wow, that little application did it. I imagine that will come in handy in the future. I don't know why I didn't think of using a better process tracker.
Turns out, Flex Builder 3 had a local version of FP9 in its program files. Hopefully I can replace them with FP10 or FP9 in the future, in case I need to use Flex again, but as for now I removed them and everything started working like magic.
If anyone is curious, the directory I found FP9 in was:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Flex Builder 3\Player\win\FlashPlayer.exe
Thanks for the help! You just saved me and several of my coworkers a heap of annoyance.

  • My Mac Mini Turns on by itself or is it  The Ghost In The Machine?

Lately I have been noticing that my Mac Mini is turning itself on after being off for several hours. At first I thought it might be another member of my household, but when I questioned they all about they all state they did not turn it on. Now unless I have ghost in my house that are big Mac fans I can't figure out why or how it can be turning itself on. As far as I know there have been no power outages in my area that might have caused it to think it needs to be turned on when the power came back in, and besides why would it need to restart after a power outage if it was already off when the power went out and came back on.

Check your Energy Saver settings in System Preferences. Under Schedule there may be a startup time someone set, which is causing it to start up at the odd time of the day.

  • A ghost in the machine

hello all. sorry that my first words here have me begging for help, but i've been kinda following threads for couple weeks now while trying to figure out how to play along and maybe be able to muster up tidbit to offer help before needing help but it's just not working out that way. i'm certainly not feeling like i'm the one that anyone would/should take advice from these days given my lil mac-de'- lima. although i've owned a mac for 18-19yrs w/o any problems flying too far over my lil noggin, let me just say that knocking on would a wisest move, as it turns out...got my new intel imac butt spankn outta the box early this yr and it has me freaken scratching my head to a gnarly raw finish trying to fig out what's going on with it. please please someone, todays' hero - any help would be greatly appreciated!
so i got my fancy smancy imac as a late x-mas gift this past feb and it's just been problem after problem, so it must be the jinx or stupid in me... i was using it to compose music, but now i just kinda sit and look at the activity monitor and console while taking bets and wondering how much memory will it gobble before needing it's tenth  "CLEAN" Os install / reinstall?...and the answer is, it will go until it gobbles up whatever is the rest of the memory.  i'm now on my the 11th or 12th OS install and this includes the two installs that the apple store geniuses did while attempting to perform a "clean" install. i use quotations because i'm i'm positive i'm seeing files and odd screwed up patterns and behaviors reappear over and over but immediately after an install. for instance, when i try to do an update and i mean, directly after doing the reinstall i go straight to the apple website and instantly dealing with redirects. but it's not just that, i have checked permissions upon completing a reinstall and they've wound up being screwed up from the get go. but this isn't a messy mess, it's a neat one because whomever schemed it up was clever enough to rig the utility app so that it was being misled to a bad source to retrieve bad permissions. and i know that i'm really not very computer smart or anything and i'm surely not stating things w correct techno speak so please bare w/ me and my brilliant displays of ignorance. really whatever is or isn't going on w/ my computer, it has been driving me bat crazy. i'm convinced that somehow enough of the right files are dodging the reformatting process and they are are somehow stored locally. maybe in the root, is that possible. i don't know prolly a stupid question i know... some files are maybe coming from a wired source; others i believe are coming direct from the web, some are arriving by way of rigged airport utility; some have appeared dressed up as fonts that ended up consuming .5G of memory; i'm mostly composing music and so some have shown up tucked or written to arrive as the innards of a garageband loop. and not just one lil ol loop... we're talking over 7gigs of information stuffed inside a loop. i know i'm not expressing this in a way that has me sounding like a sane person but quite frankly, there for awhile i thought that i was loosing my mind. at first i was avoiding a reinstall of the musical loops that come w/ gb because i don't use them, but now i do this for security reasons. this monster on my computer, and it is a monster to me, a call it 'the hateful memory sucking dirty file monster" because as far as i can tell, that's basically all it winds up doing. although i should mention that there were a few instances of hankypanky where i was clear that someone else was logged onto my computer but from a remote location. i am the only one that is "supposed" to have access to my computer but this is not the case. is it at all possible to rig a computer so that it doesn't have access to the outside world. i've lost way too much time in lost files and now, i'm afraid to even work on it. i almost always unplug the internet if i'm not on it. i have plenty of computers if i should ever need to be on the web. it's also on my iPhone, it's on both of my ipads. whatever this is, it has locked me completely out of two laptops running windows and the third one, which is a desktop running windows, at least restores itself but it's just that it dose so at the most inconvenient time so i don't go near that one. is there a class that i should be taking to teach me how to avoid this type of situation?
anyhow there are plenty other misdoings on my computer, but i've taken up enough space here. maybe somebody knows enough about whatever this  is and you're able to quickly diagnose this as a small thing where it just makes me out to be doing something extremely wrong and somehow causing my own problems, i'll take the blame. i just need computer back.  i'll take ANY suggestions and i am fully grateful for any words of wisdom, thank you!

Thanks for the response, but I never said that I was getting texts from strangers.  I said that messages are showing up in iMessage conversations that appear to have come from me but which I didn't type.  iMessage and texting are not the same thing.  Furthermore, I've had this phone number for over a decade.

  • My arrow keys start start repeating without touching them and a string of periods are displayed in an entry field (e.g. credential to log in). Or if I type an arrow key, they immediately start repeating in perpituity. It's like a ghost in the machine.

After the last OS X update (a security update I think), two things happened:
my iMac would not boot (gray screen) or if it did boot, the mouse wasn't recognized and I couldn't mouse to the PW field to log in - nor did tabbing or any keystrokes get me there. I fixed this by unpludding peripherals (back up drive), but know I can't boot unless they are unplugged and it makes using TimeMachine a pain in the arse.
My wired, extended mac keyboard now types without me, primarily, as far as I can tell, the arrow key(s). .................................... So, for example, those periods you see here are because I touched the right arrow key and off it went until I pressed ESC. Also, sometimes they just start going off on their own. For example, I can be in sleep mode and all of a sudden the screen will wake and the PW field will start filling with periods, just like you see above. ***?
Seriously, you would think that apple would have a response for this. I have searched their support site and NOTHING. I've seen some older threads on reseting certain things. Does anyone have any summer 2013 updates?
    Thank You!!!

If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
    See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

  • IMessage - a ghost in the machine?

Something happened to me last night, and it was very disturbing.  I was having an iMessage conversation with a friend and suddenly he was responding to things I hadn't typed.  On my screen, the messages looked like they came from me (i.e., they were on the right-side of the screen), but I wasn't typing them.  Whoever typed them seemed confused as well.  It was like having crossed wires in the old telephone system.

Thanks for the response, but I never said that I was getting texts from strangers.  I said that messages are showing up in iMessage conversations that appear to have come from me but which I didn't type.  iMessage and texting are not the same thing.  Furthermore, I've had this phone number for over a decade.

  • AppleTV Ghost in the Machine?

    Greetings?
Every so often, I notice that my AppleTV has turned itself on! Yikes! I intentionally keep it "off", that is, no power light on. However, I have noticed a few times that it has somehow turned itself on, with the power light shining away brightly! What's up? Can Apple turn it on via the Internet? Is there some secret programming code set to turn it on at a certain time? Anybody else have this occurance? Hmmmm...weird?
    Thanks & God Bless!
    Rick

Weird. I have the sneaking suspicion that the
AppleTV is being activated via the Internet?????
The Apple TV never really turns off (unless you
unplug it, of course). As explained in Apple TV: About standby mode, it still
maintains a network connection so that it will appear
in any iTunes devices lists & sync new content as
    required.
While the article doesn't specifically say it will
"wake" in response to an iTunes event, I suspect this
could occur if, for instance, your Mac or PC is
running the app & say, a podcast or season ticket
subscription update occurs automatically or manually
-- IOW, the computer hosting iTunes could initiate a
sync event & thereby wake the Apple TV remotely.
The Apple TV syncs without turning on, so this theory is not valid.
I can quite happily sync lots of content with the Apple TV in its 'standby' (off) mode.
I too have seen the same issue with the Apple TV turning itself on, in my case it has done it overnight. There have been no remote IR signals while I have been in bed, nor have there been any recordings or Podcast updates from my computer as it is asleep overnight (and is still asleep when I get up).
There is clearly some external influence causing this wake up, maybe it is some kind of internet update, but why must it wake to do this as it syncs OK without waking?
    Just try this for yourself.
    1. Turn the Apple TV off (standby)
    2. Download a Podcast or change some settings in iTunes that causes the Apple TV to sync.
You will notice that it does not wake up, but it still syncs.

  • Audio ghost in the machine

I'm using the latest iMovie. About 12 minutes into my project, an audio glitch of about 4 seconds (not words, background noise) comes onto the soundtrack. I've deleted, added, re-booted, created titles in that spot and nothing will get rid of it. Thoughts?

One possibility might be an iPhone using the Apple Remote App for Apple TV that somehow got on your network. If you are not familiar, there is an app for the iPhone that can control an Apple TV. It works as long as the iPhone with the app is on the same network as the Apple TV it controls.
But this app's signals also control Front Row on a Mac which can turn on iTunes seemingly at random and begin playing things.
How do I know this? We have an Apple TV and I use this remote to control it. If I'm using it while we have our laptops on the network, they open up iTunes and begin playing songs, etc. on the laptops. They just do completely unpredictable things when we are using this remote app. Even when one of our laptops is upstairs, it suddenly starts playing something on Itunes, sometimes very loud. Now when we use the remote app, we just shutdown or stop using our MacBooks because iTunes basically takes over.

  • Ghost in the machine

My mail app seems to be possessed. I have set it up for IMAP access to my gmail account, diligently following google's instructions and the tips regarding mapping mailboxes etc.
The thing is, it doesn't stick! I have repeatedly unchecked/checked the boxes regarding where to store drafts, sent and junk mail as instructed here (http://tinyurl.com/5m5wef) but when I go back mail has spookily decided to overturn my choices and reverted to the original settings.
What could be causing this odd behaviour?

  • Ghost in the machine or the dimm?

    Hi guyz..
Tell you a little strange story.
Rig (see sig) is super stable.. been stable from day 1 at default voltages and default everything and I purchased the kit 3 days after the release. 3 weeks ago a fly got stuck in my head, I just had to try out the wife's Winbond BH5 in my PC and see if I can squeeze a little more speed out of the rig, no OC tho. I connect my wrist to a ground and get the 2x512MB BH5 dimms and put them in my PC. Nah, no speed gain from the tighter timings they give me, 2 3 2 5 vs. 2 3 3 7 for the GEIL. I put the GEIL back in because that Golden Dragon doesn't give away any heat at all whereas the BH5 heats up.
One week goes by and I get a blue screen and I have to hard boot the PC. I'm thinking .. stability is my prime concern and therefore I don't OC and I really document all the changes I make etc. to be able to backtrack should I encounter instability. But I haven't done anything except trying out those BH5 Winbond dimms.. no way interchanging dimms for an hour can cause this?!
Week 2 after the testing of the Winbond BH5 and I'm still getting random lock ups, very rarely but I'm getting them. Rig can run for 8 hours before locking up.
I decide to run Memtest during the night so I can exclude the memory. I run "all the tests" and I wake up to see 17 errors and the error is pretty isolated. I think.. dang.. I might have spoiled the memory when I was handling it. I get the wife's BH5 (connected to a ground as always) and put both of the sticks in. No post. I take out 1 stick and biip I get a post.
So the situation now is that I can only run the rig with 1 dimm in bank 0 LOL and I've been using the rig with 2 dimms at default 2.6v since 3 days after the relase of the Athlon64.
Is it possible that I stressed the board too much when I installed the dimms and something snapped?
As of this writing I'm testing the Golden Dragon in my wifes rig with Memtest, doing the same tests as on my rig that gave me errors.
Before you ask me to try diffrent dimms in diffrent banks. I have already done that. Both BH5 dimms will post but only in bank 0 (0 1 2=3). Banks 1 and 2 will not post at all and no combination helps. Only bank 0 and that's it.
I have yet to try the Golden Dragon again, I figured perhaps increase the volts will help but then of course, why would it help NOW?! The rig has been running for months now at default voltages and it's on 24/7.. what has changed and what exactly snapped out of place?
    Any thoughts and input welcome.
    Sincerely,
    Simon

    Thanks for a reply Sab.
    1) No changes to the BIOS, using v 1.2.
    2) I've reset it once.
I forgot to add in in my first post.
The D bracket shows the stop occuring at "Chips initialization".
I guess when it comes to the A64 dimms are a big step .. This whole affair doesn't make much sense and since i'm always very gentle and connected to a ground when I'm handling my PC gear I find it unlikely that I've damaged anything, however it's the only possability that makes sense.
Any one with beta BIOS 1.3 shared their thoughts on this or perhaps email me?
Getting bored listening to the HD caching.. would like my GB of memory in the rig.

  • Most bizarre issue ever! Ghost in the machine?

So I've been having an issue with my Droid X which is completely bizarre. If other people hadn't witnessed it, and I didn't have proof, I would think I was imagining it.
At night, while the phone is plugged in and I'm asleep, it does things. All by itself. Random things. It inserts events into my calendar with random characters. It emails random characters to various email addresses, mostly random character ones which results in deliver failure returns emails, but sometimes to my own email addresses. Or it will read random texts from my inbox out loud. That last one scared the bejeezus out of me and my boyfriend, because it woke us up.
    What. The. H***???
Since this only happens when the phone is plugged up, I wonder if it's even possible that a short in the charger could cause this??

Whoa! I'm not sure whether to help troubleshoot your phone or give you the number to a local exorcist.  I'll keep the number handy in case troubleshooting doesn't work.  Here's what I think is going on. 1) A bad app is giving random commands to your phone which makes it go haywire. 2) There's a problem with the touch screen, and it acts in the same manner as being pressed.  Ensure that your screen is clean and if you have a case on your device, try removing it to see if that resolves the problem.
Here's what you can do: Try removing the battery.  Leave it out for 30 seconds, place it back in, and see if it happens again.  If it does, then we can attempt a master reset. If the master reset doesn't resolve things, it's likely a touchscreen problem, and the device will need to be replaced. You can DM me, and I'll look at replacement options for you, or you can call 866-406-5154 (Warranty Center/Tech Support).
Let us know how it all works out, and post any updates you have on the issue.

When I set up my Macs, there were 2 sign-up names - 1 I created and the other was "Ghost". The Apple store says that takes up 50% of my hard drive. Can I kill "Ghost"? Do I just delete it?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hello Blisshous,
It sounds like you have a user account named Ghost, that you want to delete all content from and remove from the computer. This article will help you do that named:
OS X Lion: Delete a user account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3867
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Users & Groups or click Parental Controls.
Click the lock icon to unlock it, and then type an administrator name and password.
Select the user account you want to delete, and then click Delete below the account list.
    Do one of the following:
Select “Save the home folder in a disk image” to save the folder as a disk image in /Users/Deleted Users/.
Select “Don’t change the home folder” to leave the home folder in /Users/.
Select “Delete the home folder” to remove it from the computer. If you want to prevent programs that read raw data from retrieving any files, select “Erase home folder securely.”
    Click OK.
Keep in mind, if you remove the user and delete the data, without Time Machine you will not be able to restore any data from it in the future.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling
