IDVD hangs while "rendering video asset"

I've tried to burn the same project with several different themes.
iDVD keeps hanging in step 2, clock stops, spinning beachball...time remaing 11 minutes (it doesn't always hang in exactly the same spot from a time remaining count.)
I've read some threads here, I have plenty of open disc space (47 GB).
Anything I should try?

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm not sure if the follwing is a clue, but I don't think I can force quit, I need to force a restart by holding down the power key.
I say I don't think I can fore quit because I am not sure if I have tried all the options to cause a "force quit". In leopard, is there a keyboard short cut as Option - Command - Escape doesn't seem to work? As I stated before I can't get the machine to respond to use FQ in the apple menu.
After I figure out the force quit, what should I try next to get Idvd to burn?
Should I try deleting preferences? If so, where are they and what specifially should I delete?
BTW, the inability to burn is relatively new, I have successsfully burned dvds on ths machine before. I think it was actually before the latest QT update.

    Hi
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.
    • Delete iDVD pref. file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref. file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
If You run Mac OS X.7 or more - then the Library in the User-account folder is invisibly and need to be set to be viewable. IT IS NOT in the Library on Root level (when opening MacintoshHD - first window = root level)
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Disconnect all external hard disks and try - FireWire, USB/2, AirPort or Net-work connected.
To work OK I prefer FireWire AND it must be Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - WILL NOT DO for video - neither for iMovie or FinalCut or iDVD any version ! This also includes any USB-memory sticks.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple’s Disk Utilities application)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK will work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’09 v. 7.0.4, Mac OS X.5.8 AND QuickTime 7.6.4 - is OK (does work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz
    or
    Macintosh HD/Users/Your log-in//Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes/ zzzzzzzzzz
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem ! ! Finally ! !
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
No of Colors - must be set to millions
EdinSF writes that, The 10.6.3 update with an Open GL fix seems to have taken care of the problem.

  • IDVD hangs in rendering menu stage

I'm running iDVD on my G4 1.73 dual and using the Pass through theme. Sure, there are lot's of photos and video vx but what good are they if the system hangs. Since the hang is serious as my pointer doesn't even move, I assume a restart and rework of the 17 minute movie is in order, maybe a different theme(?). I'm trashing the .plist in the restart but beyond spending more time reworking my flashy movie, what are my other alternatives? Are there some updates on the horizon that will actually make this software work?

    Start here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2466511#2466511
If you're guessing it's your "flashy movie" try exporting it to full quality DV which will pre-render everything, and use that in iDVD.
Also themes can get corrupted, so trying a new theme is a good idea too.
    Finally download this:

If you want more info......yes it is for iDVD5, but most of the tips are still good.

  • AE CS4 hangs while rendering to AVI

(running CS4 on Win XP Pro x64 on a quad core Opteron system with 4GB memory)
I have a fairly long composition (8744 frames) that I used to render just fine on this system with AE CS2. Then I upgraded to CS4 (and subsequently had my .aep file converted). Now when I try to render the entire sequence to AVI,AE either just hangs around frame 7120 or I get an error around that same frame complaining it could not read a certain input AVI - but I can manually move the time cursor to that frame just fine, and the AVI is fine, too.
I tried changing the memory/cache settings but got no effect. Also changed number of CPUs to no avail. The rendering tab reports max. 35% memory usage (of 4GB) anyway.
Any ideas/suggestions what could be causing this and what I could do to get my movie rendered?!
    Thanks!
    Martin
Edit: Now I tried to split the sequence in two parts. First part 0-7000 worked fine, second part (the rest) gave me this:
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <8068> <ae.blitpipe> <2> rect t:0.000000 l:0.000000 w:0.000000 h:-73.000000

    Mylenium,
first of all thanks very much for taking interest in my problem!
The composition as well as all the footage is non-interlaced, so not sure your suggestion applies. Also, the hang occurs on different frames each time, but very close to each other (I use the Render frame counter to tell where it hangs). In the meantime, I had AE write a Log file, tested the 'secret' preference options, tried to render shorter segements of the composition - all futile.
What I found out is that it is indeed caused by one specific video clip used in the composition. If I hide that, it renders fine. That clip is an AVI encoded using the (free, lossless) Huffyuv codec which, granted, is not supported and I am using it at my own risk but I never had any problems with it before, inlcuding older AE versions. I have converted that clip to another free, lossless codec (Lagarith) and now the composition is rendering.
It took me about five hours to find this out. I still have no good explanation, and I am certainly not impressed by AE's error recovery/reporting. :\

  • Captivate 6 Hangs while recording video demo and software simulation

I am running captivate 6 on windows 7 SP1 64 bit operating system. Captivate 6 hangs whenever I tried to record video demo or software simulation. I am running captivate 6 as an administrator.

    Hi Peekay,
Thank you for contacting Adobe Support.
Please use the following steps and let us know if it solves the issue:
    1) Try recreate preferences for Adobe Captivate (For this close captivate and navigate to the location C:\Users\your account name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Captivate and rename the captivate folder)
    2) Try creating a new Admin user account on your system and then try the simulation.

  • Why might Premiere Pro hang while rendering?

I am trying to render out a project for work which consists of twenty four 20:00 minute videos. We filmed it in R3D 3840x2160 23.976p and the audio is 4800Hz -24 bit - 2 mono. There is quite a bit of RGB curves color correction on some clips, a 0.7 rotation of the clips (tripod fail), and a bit of audio key-framing, but other than that the project consists mostly of titles and basic video files.
Originally I queued up about five of them and started rendering them in CC media encoder. The first lecture crashed at about 40% of a 2 pass render. I then tried to render a single video out through direct export and the render crashed a bit earlier, 25% (ish). I've tried several other things since, but no real success. The point that the render freezes will vary between 5-60% completion.
    Here are my render settings:
    VBR, 2 Pass
    Target Bitrate 15-18Mbps
    Maximum Depth
    Maximum Render Quality
    1920x1080 23.976 fps,
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I appreciate any responses!

Thanks Jim.  What I'm finding is that Premiere is a sort of "RAM hog" and chews up RAM quickly without disposing of unneccesary RAM.  Unlike AfterEffects, it doesn't have an internal automatic (or manual) "memory purge" option, so I've resorted to purging the RAM file cache manually with an app called "Memory Diag" from iTunes.  It seems to be working great, as when my system starts to stutter on playback, purging the RAM clears out unused RAM, and the system starts working well again.
I'd recommend to Adobe to address this in Premiere CC, so that users don't have to manually purge RAM, but rather Premiere automatically detects when it's using unecessary RAM and purge the RAM itself.

  • MBP not using all memory while rendering video

    Hey,
When I do rendering in Adobe Premiere Por CS6, my Mac is not using all the available RAM: 2773 MB used....5416 MB free
    Memory Pages:
                                  1658 MB active....1099 MB wired
                                  5420 MB inactive....11.2 MB free
it also says that:       3 swap files at peak usage
256 MB total swap space (20 MB used)
350 GB free storage space( total 750 GB)
    I have a MBP (OS x Lion) late 2011 with i7 2.8 GHz and 8 GB RAM
Adobe Premiere Pro is set to use 6.5 GB of RAM but not even while working in the programme it has ever used that much of memory.
During rendering, it is the only app running, except for Google Chrome.
If this info is not enough, just ask what do you need to know...
    PLEASE HELP, rendering takes forever.
    Thanks,
      kund

You never said what model Mac you have. Since this is the MacBook Pro forum, I assume you have some version of the MBP. 390% CPU would indicate CPU-boundedness for a quad-core CPU without active hyperthreading, or a dual-core CPU with hyperthreading active.
Given the high CPU usage and the low swap usage, it seems unlikely that memory usage is the problem, but I'm not a Premiere Pro user, so I couldn't guess what it.
You might try posting your question in an Adobe forum for Premiere Pro.

  • 17 Macbook Pro, freezing while rendering video in FCP

Hi I have a late 2008 Model MacBook Pro 17.  My Macbook keeps freezing during rendering in Final Cut Pro 7.  Its been doing this for 3 weeks or so.  I originally thought a SSD was the way to go, but I think I may really need a new processor.  Im a little confused on what I should buy and what fits my MacBook Pro. What I want is to fix the rendering freezing and shorten the rendering time.  I'd appreciate any advice or ideas.  Is my Macbook compatible to a Intel i7 or i5?  Buying a new Macbook Pro is not an option at this point.  Thank you in advance.
Here are the specs on my laptop:
    MacBookPro4,1
2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB RAM
    500gb HDD Momentus 7200 SATA 3Gb/s
    GeForce 8600M GT

    Hi instantclassic99,
I do have this article of key combinations on startup:
Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs

I would try this with a wired Apple keyboard if possible.  Specifically, I'd try:
    Press Option during startup
Start up in Startup Manager, where you can select an OS X volume or network volume to start from.

  • Firefox is slow and hangs watching Youtube videos. Safari is OK. What's the word, Developers?

Since late Oct 2011, my Firefox had been hanging while watching videos on Youtube. Any mouse action while a video is playing causes Firefox to hang (spinning wheel).
It turns out that I had caught the beta release of the new Gray Youtube interface - where the backgrounds of all youtube pages are gray.
I got myself back to the old interface by deleting all Youtube cookies.
I no longer have hangs. Page transitions are also much quicker, as was before.
Is there anyone else who has experienced the "new" interface, and problems?
If you do have the new youtube interface, but no problems, then I have more digging to do.
    Update Dec 2, 2011:
I have the problem again now that Youtube has released their "new look" interface to everyone.
The problem is generally slow Firefox responses to mouse actions while watching Youtube videos. Firefox will hang completely 2-4 minutes into any Youtube video. (The video does continue to play a-ok.) FF becomes responsive again when the video ends playing.
Problem doesn't occur when I watch a youtube video right after starting FF after having "quit" it. Problem begins occur after FF has been running for a while (visiting other websites?) Is this a symptom of FF collecting some kind of crud in memory or disk?
My old Safari (3.2.1) doesn't have any problems.
As far as I can see, both Firefox and Safari on my system use the same Adobe Flash Player.
So, this isn't a problem with Youtube, Flash Player, or my system, but a problem with Firefox (3.6.24) !?
Anybody (FF developers) have any ideas? I want to keep using FF!

    Thanks Cor-el.
The problem existed in safe mode as well.
Changing Flash Player hardware acceleration had no effect.
The problem is gone now, after getting the standard youtube interface back.
What I'd like to know is whether any others who are unwitting testers of the new Youtube interface are experiencing problems, and, if not, what is their system? Which versions of Firefox and Flash Player are they using?

  • Video hangs while transiting

The video hangs while transition though the music and the progress bar continue.

It occurs in the browser and in the project. The computer has a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB graphics card. I use an external firewire hard drive of 1 TB (400 GB left) or my projects. The internal drive is a 446 GB drive, 256 GB left. It doesn't solve the problem to move the project to the internal drive. I checked this already.
The problem occur on two other computers, too: an older Macbook Pro with 3 GB RAM and a white Macbook with 4 GB. Furthermore, it doesn't matter whether I run FCPX from another partition or with MacOS Snow Leopard. I reinstalled the program and removed all 3rd party codecs but it didn't help. Could be another bug on the long bug list. I sent a report to Apple.

  • "Conforming HDV" instead of "Writing Video" while rendering anything

I am having a serious issue with FCP. I am getting the "Conforming HDV" dialog instead of "Writing Video" while rendering anything
    Short Project shot @ 720p 30 with a JVC GY-HD100U
    1) This gradually started happening more and more.
    2) Whenever I try to render anything, even a small crossfade, FCP shows the "Conforming HDV" dialog and proceeds to trash my video. Pieces of the video are repeated or frames are dropped and shots become jerky.
Undo fixes the issue. Replacing the video with the original fixes the issue. But I connot RENDER ANYTHING!
    What would you all suggest?
    MBP C2D 15 - Dual 1.25 G4 MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Welcome to HDV. I've never had much better luck than this. The way the GOP structure of the mpeg-2 HDV stream works, the I-frames in your media almost never match up with the default GOP structure of the sequence, and you must wait for it to conform everytime you even think about touching it. Changing the render settings might help. If you are still runnning FCP 4.5, you will be plagued with scrambled render files - even if you can get it to show the correct rendered material in the timeline, if you export or encode or output to tape, you'll wind up with different (wrong) renders in the resulting files.
You might consider batch exporting all your media to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC), an all I-frame codec that helps to get around some of the GOP structure issues that make HDV so impossible to work with. Also, more RAM, or a better video card will take some of the load off of the processor as it tries valiantly to decode the HDV stream. Upgrading FCP to the latest version will also help with some of the render-scrambling etc.
    Hope this helps -

  • Idvd stalls while encoding either video or audio

I am using version 6.0.3 of idvd. Once the video has been imported from my digital video cam and idvd begins the process encoding the video and then the audio, idvd often stalls and stops responding, which requires me to force quit idvd losing all the data imported. This issue is very frustrating since it takes more than an hour to import the video content only to lose it all with a moments stall. I had this same problem with version 5 and I had hoped that version 6 would correct the issue, but to no avail.
Also, I am unable to import video from iPhoto saved a .mov file into idvd in order to burn the video onto a disk.
Thanks for everyone's assistance ahead of time.
    Rev Tim

    Rev Tim,
Sounds like you are using OneStep - I'd go back and use iMovie to import, and then iDVD to burn - that way you won't lose the video import.
The most common issues that can cause your problems are:
    1) not having 16 bit audio - this document is for iDVD5, but applies to iDVD6
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300741
For that matter, you always want 16 bit audio, even in iMovie.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42974
    2) Not having enough free space - make sure you have 20GB free plus 2GB for every ten minutes of video you want to import. Yes this is a lot, and more than Apple says you need, but personal experience tells me it is important.
As for the iPhoto .mov issue, I agree it should work (and I have done it). Exactly how are you trying to import the .mov file?

  • Error while rendering menus/slideshows--HELP!!

Ok. I've done my homework on this forum and the Mac help pages and nothing fixes this problem.
Initial issue: I have an iDVD project with pictures in drop zones, audio in the background, two menu pages each with 3-4 movies (both .dv and .mpg4), and a menu page with nothing but background audio and text.
While trying to create a disk image I received the (familiar to this board) error that there was an "Error while rendering menus/slideshows" and that burning was to be aborted.
    What I tried:
I cleared 41 gigs of free space on my boot drive.
I transfered all of my media files onto the boot drive.
I verified and repaired permissions. (until I did these last two items, the program wouldn't just fail, it would crash my computer, giving me the multilanguage *you must restart* greyed out page).
I downloaded the most recent quicktime, iTunes, and Mac OS updates.
I created a new iDVD project with only one video file (sepearately tried just a .dv and .mpg4 file).
I removed all quicktime extensions from my 'library/quicktime' and '~library/quicktime' folders.
I changed from 'higher quality' to 'better performance'.
I told it to process in the background.
I told it to delete the rendered files when it was done.
I ran the apple hardware Test from my Apple CD.
I turned off the hard drive/screen 'sleep' settings.
I switched the video format from NTSC to PAL.
I swore and came up with multiple comically profane file names for the disk images.
Nothing. It always gives the error following the 'processing menus' portion of the rendering.
    Facts:
    iBook G4
    1.2 GHz Power PC
    1.25 GB Ram
41.77 Gigs of free hard drive on boot disk.
    iDVD v5.0.1 (625)
    iMovie HD v5.0.2 (111)
    Quicktime v7.1.5
    Mac OSX v10.4.9
I'm running into a deadline and need to have this burned!!
    *** Mac?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1.2 G Ram

I switched the video format from NTSC to PAL.
Why in the world would you do this? You are in the
NTSC area. You must change the NTSC/PAL setting
    BEFORE you start a project.
Mostly because I don't know what it means and wanted to try anything.
All the video and audio is original content.
I ended up going to the Mac genius bar today. They said that it was a corrupted encoding file solved by a reinstall of iDvd. Sounds like a lot of people run into this problem?
On the topic of file formats... do you know why my titles look great in iMovie, but look like crap once I export them? Even if I export at "Full Quality". And is .dv better than .mpg4? I need a good primer.
    thanks,
    Ian
I suspect the problem lies in your mpg-4 content.
iMovie/iDVD have very spotty mpg-4 support. Try
    using something like VisualHub (
    http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/ ) to convert
your mpg-4 files to DV format. (You may also be
having problems with the music used in your menus.
    Where does it come from?)

  • Error while rendering: Export file not found - what to do?

    Hi,
I have been editing my video in four different premiere pro projects (as I got adviced to do from these forums because it's AVCHD clips). I have rendered these four projects and burned to four DVD's (total playtime is around 1.5hours) - which is working fine.
But then I try to import all four projects into one big master project because I want to make a blu-ray iso. The import goes fine (I import like this: File > Import > Choose project > Import entire project)
I export to encore, make the menus etc. and click "build" to start rendering. The problem is that after some time I get this error:
Blu-ray Object: "sequence-name-here/project-name-here.prproj", Export file not found
I have seen this error before while rendering some of the four individual projects - but when I saw them I simply just tried again by exporting to encore from the projects again. This seemed to work - but with the big master project I have tried several times with no luck.
Can anyone help me fix this issue? :)

    Yes, I got this too:
For posterity, here is what I have found that completely fixes this error, repeatedly:  Clear Encore's cache.  Specifically:
Close your Encore project and exit Encore
Go to the cache subdirectory named for your project (ie. if your save file is c:\projects\mymovie.ncor then go to c:\projects\mymovie\cache)
    Delete the file "mlf.cache.v10"
If your Encore project contains any Premiere Pro dynamically-linked assets, start Premiere Pro and load at least one of the projects used in Encore.  (I have found that this reduces memory usage -- for some reason, Premiere Pro takes up less memory than if Encore spawns the PProHeadless.exe media server to serve the same function)
Restart Encore and load your project
...and wait, patiently, for Encore to re-scan all of your assets and build up the cache again and don't touch it until it's finished.  I use Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653) to watch my disk activity and CPU to know when Encore is finished (just hover on the cyan-colored graph and you can see what program is performing the most disk activity).  Once it's all finished, I save, then immediately try to build my project again.  For proof of concept, my 40GB BD-50 project just built last night after getting this error yesterday afternoon.
If any of your assets are not transcoded before you begin this process, transcode them all, then start this process over again from step one.  Clearing the cache does not clear the transcodes.
I hope this helps someone.  I was not looking forward to completely re-authoring my project, which I've been working on (on and off) for a few months.
