Byron,
maybe I didn't explain it right: commercial DVDs don't mean movies with commercials - it means they are available to buy in stores (commercially).
And, if you want to make your own movie, we can help you here using iMovie, but as I and MadisonP said, you can't easily copy purchased DVDs because they have protection built in (they don't want you to copy the movie). Since these are purchased DVDs, it may not be worth your while to spend money on any software if it is not going to work anyway.
And asking is just fine - how do you find out if you don't ask....
This is why we can't talk about it:

You are asking how to make pirate copies of commercial DVDs that you have somehow ripped to your Mac?
As that is illegal in most countries, being a flagrant breach of copyright, it is also against the terms of use of these forums to discuss it.

  • How to convert VCD files into readable format on iDVD, iMovie, DVD player

I found a bunch of old VCDs that I want to convert so that I can use them on iDVD, iMovie. What is the best free converter and would appreciate any tips as to the best way to reduce any loss of resolution. I tried last year converting thru mpeg streamclip and the movie came out pixelated in .mov.

ffmpeg might be very difficult to install and use, but not FFMpegX. FFMpegX takes ffmpeg, adds a very simple Mac OS X UI on top, and packages it as an application bundle. No files to put in strange places, and simple to use.
I highly recommend it. It comes preconfigured with setting for common file formats and automatically recognizes the input format. You can simply tell it to convert a directory of files from whatever format they were in to H.264 QuickTime movies and it'll do it.

  • I lost iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie!  How can I get them back?

    Hi,
I have a PowerBook G4, which originally came with Panther. It came with iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, Garageband (I think that's it... basically iLife). I bought Tiger and upgraded it. These programs were all still here, and with some downloads, were actually updated. Unfortunately, I was having problems with Mail, Safari, and other programs and I erased my hard drvie and started over. Before doing this, I saved all of my photos, movies, projects, etc, to an external hard drive.
Anyway, when I reinstalled Tiger, it installed it as it comes from the store, not as an upgrade, meaning iLife is not included and installed! So, I paid for all of these programs, which were originally included, and now I don't have them anymore. I tried loading them off of my original recovery discs, but the only way I think I might be able to do that is if I erase everything and start over with Panther, then reinstall Tiger. I'm not sure this will even work, and I know it will take a long time, which I don't have.
Does anyone know how I can get these programs, which I already paid for, without buying iLife?
    Thanks

I don't have panther but with my "full disc" of Tiger you can do it this way:
Put in the DVD of Tiger
Open pacifist-> press "not yet" or pay if you want
Open package, choose the DVD of Tiger, there choose "install bundled software"
    then click open
now it's looking through the DVD and gives you all the options
    for example:contentsofiMovieHDpackage
now click on that one once, then on the top either choose 'install" or "extract to"

  • Trying to share a completed iMovie project with iDVD. iMovie keeps quitting. Why?

I've been trying to share a completed iMovie project with iDVD. iMovie keeps quitting unexpectedly. Why does it keep crashing?

Click on the button near the top of the window where it says Project Library (it toggles between Library and edit Project).
Click just once on the name of the project, so that it highlights in blue.
Go to File Menu > Duplicate Project. There will now be a second project with the same name, but with a number added to the end of the name
Open that duplicated project by double-clicking it
Lastly, Check out this Discussion Thread from September
I movie quits unexpectedly during editing and publishing
from Jasonryan1. It relates to a corrupted item existing in his project. And in his attempt to troubleshoot it, he suspected it was a Title he placed in the Project itself. Once he deleted the corrupted Title he was able to successfully export it. As to which item is causing instability, that's a tricky process to narrow down. And I would agree it seems unlikely all your projects could have some corrupted element in them. But it might work to concentrate on the simplest project which is showing the symptoms you describe. Duplicate that project and start deleting pieces of it and trying to add a Title to it and see if iMovie crashes. And that's not to say it's a title, it could just as easily be a picture, a transtion or a music clip that's preventing that project from being exported.

  • How to install iDVD/iMovie on Tiger if you have the Leopard version of iLif

I have iLife '09 and iWork '09. Will these work on Tiger 10.4.11? I bought those for my Leopard computer. But the computer with Tiger I don't think it will run on it. How do I get the Tiger version of iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto, and all the other apps included in iLife and iWork? Would I have to get another CD and pay full price?

I have iLife '09 and iWork '09. Will these work on Tiger 10.4.11?
iWork '09 will work with Tiger.

  • Why can I not use my itunes purchased songs in idvd/imovie?

Upto about two months ago I had no problem adding itunes purchased songs in my idvd / imovie projects - now I cannot. A warning message comes up about needing to authorise the computer and although I am using the same mac as I did when purchasing the tracks I still go through the process of authorisation - the tracks are still not available.
I have just purchased an xbox 360 and when connecting my ipod my purchased songs are once again unavailble to play even though I can play them using my ipod in the normal way.
Any ideas would be very welcome, thanks!!

You're allowed play the music on up to 5 devices. Each device must be authorised. Unless you can connect the xbox to the apple store to be authorised, you will not be able to play the music on it.

    Hello TchrDi,
I suggest this article named Archived - iDVD: Troubleshooting issues with burning discs found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1583.
It is pretty lengthy, but also pretty thorough.

  • Uninstall iDVD, iMovie, GarageBand, World Book 2004

    Hello.
I would like to know how to remove the following applications:
    - iDVD
    - iMovie
    - GarageBand
    - Worl Book 2004
The disk space used by this applications is really huge, I never use them. I am now lacking drive space & I rather like to keep as much as possible picture in iPhoto, instead of keeping never used applications & archiving pictures.
Of course I would like to do it as clean as possible & to keep the opportunity to re-install them later, even if it is highly unlikely.
    Thanks for the support!

Drag the applications to the Trash, then empty the Trash. IDVD, iMovie, and Garageband also have additional files that will be found in the /Library/Applications Support/ folder. Those folders can also be dragged to the Trash and deleted.

  • Missing iDVD iMovie GarageBand iPhoto

A while back I had some problems with my Mac. I took it in and I had to completely reinstall Leopard. They also connected something to my computer and did all this stuff. This was about 2-3 months ago. I never noticed till now, but I'm completely missing iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand. I never noticed because I never needed to use these programs until now. Anyways, I'm very frustrated. My computer came with these programs. It's obvious I used to have these programs because I still have icons or file folders connected with these programs. I don't want to have to spend $80 on something that came with my computer.
    Thanks to anyone that replies,
    Brooke Carvalho

Perform a custom install of them from your computer's original disks, and then update them as needed. If you have a retail version of Mac OS X 10.5, it doesn't have those applications.

  • I recently upgraded my OS to Lion and now my iPhoto,iDvd,iMovie apps are gone. My computer had these preinstalled when I bought it. Is there a way to get these back without paying for them again? (I dont have any disc to reinstall them.)

Any help would be appreciated, this is pretty frustrating I really don't want to cough up $80 to get back what was included in the original purchase price of my computer.

If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each. iDVD has been discontinued by Apple so you would need a DVD of iLife '11 for $49 http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC623Z/A/iLife-11?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY or an install disk 2 to get it.

  • Mov file created in iDVD, iMovie or Quicktime doesn't open anymore in 10.10

    Hi,
Back when I had an iBook 10.4, I worked on video. Using iMovie and iDVD, I made some creations which I burned on a DVD as well as changed into .mov format.
Those days have gone. Later computers didn't have iDVD or iMovie anymore, or what was left was half the fun of what it was before.
The result is that it has been a long time since I worked with movies.
In the meantime I got a MacBook Pro and I have X Yosemite on it.
Now I'm finding those old projects again on an external hard drive that needs to be cleaned. But it's impossible to open them.
If I click on the iMovieProj-file it asks me to look in the App-store, but it can't find anything on there. If I select Choose Application, nothing works either. If I open iMovie in the applications folder, it has two things: a grey iMovie 9.0.9 folder which doesnt turn black, and a purple star that's also called iMovie 9.0.9. The purple star opens, but it can't open my iMovieproject files. Unsupported file formats.
All that was for the original imovie file itself. Now, for the .mov file that I created myself back in the days on my iBook with aplle software.
Those don't open either. Quick time can't open it (it says I need to install QT 7, but I already have QT 10.4; I clicked ok anyway and then QT quitted). VLC doesnt open it (it says VLC doesnt open the audio or videoformat dvau; unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this). Any Video Converter doesnt manage to convert it.
    So, what can I do?????

Very odd. If you like, you can send me a short clip and I can test it on my end.

  • Since QT 7.1.0 upgrade iDVD & iMovie not rendering audio

Can I get my old QT 7.0 back?
Since I upgraded to QuickTime 7.1 & 7.1.2, It has taken a full week to produce a 45min. video using iMovie and iDVD
This is the first time I've used the new iLife to create a movie or DVD.
Usually I use Final Cut Pro to edit but since the last upgrade of FCP, I have been unable to capture video from my Sony DCR-TRV 103 cameras (no longer supported, Great!). Since I have over 300 tapes archived in this format I am discouraged and have had to resort to using iMovie which ironically has no problem capturing from these cameras but takes days to render (seriously), and iDVD simply stalls when it gets to compressing audio. I tried converting the files to DV in QT ( 16hrs.) but that didn't help. My system used to work marvelously, but since the "upgrades" I can't get anything out.
This is really broke, and it's killing me and my business.
I could kick myself for being enticed to change.
    HELP! ?

There is an incompatibility between QT 7.1.2 and OS10.3.9. (I have reported this to Apple, as I'm sure others have, but so far no cure).
This website will tell you how to downgrade QT:
    http://fox-gieg.com/tutorials/2005/undo-quicktime-7/
however I downgraded to 7.0.4 because I couldn't burn DVDs with 7.1.2, but I still couldn't burn them (even though it was OK with 7.0.4 earlier before I upgraded).
If the downgrade process described in this site doesn't work for you you may find that your only answer is to upgrade to Tiger (10.4.7).

  • Which camcorder works best with iDVD/iMovie?

So I'm buying a new camcorder. Which camcorder is the easiest to use with iDVD and iMovie? For now I just want to view and produce a DVD.
I had a JVC Everio and returned it. Converting MPEG-2 to DV I guess can be done but seems like a lot of work. My first attempt with Streamclip asked me to buy the MPEG-2 module.
I'm now looking at a Sony HDR-SR1. Thought the AVCHD would be MPEG-4 compatible and work with iMovie/iDVD but not sure. It will record in both AVCHD and MPEG-2 though.
Any suggestions or ideas? I could really use the help.

    Welcome Michael Snell
I use sony camcorders (minidv plus i.Link) successfully with iLife '06 and FCP HD. The ones to avoid are those that record to DVD directly or to an internal hard drive. Make sure your camera has digital pass thru which will also allow you to connect most analog sources as well should you need to like a VCR or another camera for import into iMovie via firewire.
Canon also works well but represents my second choice of minidv cameras.
JVC is in the same situation and would represent a third choice IMO.
The good news is that almost any minidv camcorder will work on a mac that uses fw provided it records to mini dv tape and has a firewire or i.Link connector/s.

  • IDVD-IMOVIE - encoding audio

IDVD Application stops responding when encoding audio from Imovie. Any suggestions would be helpful. I've made IDVD projects successsfully before, but can not get this project past audio encoding. I've tried exporting and sharing - but no avail.

iMovie help screen advises - "For the best compatibility with iMovie HD transitions, effects, titles, and the Ken Burns Effect, you should record your video with 48 kilohertz (kHz), 16-bit audio. Check your camera's manual for instructions on setting the audio bit rate and depth."
I’ve experimented with a ten minute movie with added audio. I set the sample rate at 48,000 khz and experienced no audio encoding stalling in iDVD.
So, if you use music you imported into iTunes, make sure the iTunes preference is set at 48,000 khz. The default is 44K.
With your present iMovie project, export as Quicktime and select "Expert Settings", click on "Options", click on "Sound settings" and set the sample rate at 48,000 khz and the sample size at 16 bit. (Also make sure the Video is set for DV/DVCPRO). Once you have this exported version of your movie, insert it into a new iMovie project, add chapters, and then go to iDVD. I can’t guarantee it will work but its worth trying.
Previously, I suggested to people to export to a DV format video camera and then insert the movie into a new iMovie project. It would result in quick audio encoding in iDVD. I recently found that my video camera exports the sound at the 48K khz sample rate, further supporting that the problem maybe the sample rate.
