Idvd is missing and i cannot make dvd's on iMovie anymore

I am very angry because I have devoted 6 months of my time editing a film on iMovie and I cannot burn it to disc because iDvd is not on my new iMac.
Apple should put iDvd back on the Mac or create something new or else filmmakers will not be using their programs to edit their films since there is no way to export them on disc. I'm very very disappointed in iMovie and Apple right now because I have bought myself a Mac FOR THE PURPOSE OF EDITING MOVIES and i will not be able to burn my films on disc to watch on TV.
I will have to move all my filmmaking projects to my Windows laptop even though I just bought a Mac.
I really hope Apple fixes this.

Did you also notice that there's no optical drive on your new iMac with which to burn CDs or DVDs?
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you can obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Connect your device to iTunes and in the the window were all the apps are greyed out make sure the 'Sync Apps' checkbox (top left corner) is selected.

Make DVD out of iMovies project

Dear All,
I am not used to write item in the support communities because I usually find the correct way to use my mac mini and it works.
But sometimes I am somehow upset & angry about mac world.
I have a mac mini server 2011 (OS lion) with i7 dual core processor, 2.7GHz, 8Gb RAM, 2HD of 500 Go (where 300Go is freespave on each HD).
I imported for the first time video from my sony DR-PC350E (mini DV tape) to iMovies and enjoy making a project of about 1h20mn duration.
-> Now I am just looking at the way to burn this project on a dvd to share it with friends on my TV.
I tried the following commands:
1. finalize the project -> it did fail after 5 hours time with "Error 108".
2. export the project to Quicktime -> it did fail after 2 hours time with "Error 108".
3. export the project to Quicktime by selecting as target my second HD-> it did fail after 2 hours time with "Error 108".
4. export the project to iDVD -> it did not fail but send me ask me after 2 hours where is iDVD application located. And I realized then that iDVD is not installed on my mac mini!
Now i am wondering:
- why is iDVD not installed when I got with OS lion iPhoto, iMovies, Garageband etc....?
As far I see on internet, iDVD is somehow not supported anymore by apple but then why do they keep this option "export to iDVD" in iMovies ???
- why do I get this "error 108". As far I see on internet, this would be about space requirement or RAM requirement. This is a joke...8 Gb RAM should be more than enough.
I did not find any clear answer regarding this "error 108" on forums and also the status of iDVD application looks quite unclear to me.
After coming back home this evening, I may try the following:
- I just read on the net I should somehow try "export to media" and then get my movies on my HD.
Then by opening a DVD burner application (DVD creator for instance), I should then be able to create by DVD finally.
- Also I may try the cut my project of 1h20mn in about 10 projects of 8 min (I have about 10 chapters...).
If anyone has feedbacks or suggestions.....

There are much to this and I can only give a few suggestions at a time.
I imported for the first time video from my sony DR-PC350E (mini DV tape) to iMovies and enjoy making a project of about 1h20mn duration.
If You want max quality - then iMovie'08 to 11 are not the tool of choice as they all are unable to Export interlaced SD-video to any DVD en-coding program - but discard every second line resulting in less quality. I use:
• iMovie HD6 - or
• FinalCut Express or Pro
• FinalCut Pro-X is said to be able to deliver 100% too - AND it can burn DVDs !
If iMovie'08 - 11 is a must then I do
• Share to Medioa Briwser - and as Large (Not HD or other resolutions as this too degrades the result)
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
• iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
• DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
• Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
• Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD

iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.

ITunes is extremely slow and I cannot make a secure connection

When I connect to iTunes my computer is extremely slow, and when I try to connect to the iTunes store I get the error message cannot make a secure connection. I have internet access and I have ran the iTunes diagnostics test and all the tests passed except making a secure connection. I have disabled all of my security systems including my firewall and Norton. I am not running any proxy settings. This has been an ongoing problem for over a month and I am at a loss.

Configure Internet Options (for Windows computers only):
Run iTunes Diagnostics. If the "Secure link to iTunes Store" section does not pass, do the following.
Open Internet Explorer.
From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
Click Connections.
Under "Dial-up and Virtual Private Networking," choose "Never dial a connection." It may not be possible to choose this if you’ve never used dial-up Internet; if this is the case, skip to the next step.
Click LAN Settings.
In the window that opens, enable the option to "Automatically detect settings" if it is not enabled.
iTunes uses Internet Options proxy settings. Apple recommends removing proxy settings that interfere with access to the iTunes Store if needed.
Click OK.
Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Security section and look for the option to "Check for server certificate revocation." If it is enabled, disable it.
Look for Use SSL 3.0 and Use TLS 1.0. Make sure at least one of those two checkboxes is selected and click OK (You can select both checkboxes).
Apply any changes, and restart your computer if you modified the option to "Check for server certificate revocation" (step #11).

[Solved] SMPlayer and Kaffeine cannot play DVDs, VLC can

I cannot play DVDs with SMPlayer or Kaffeine.
Here is the terminal output of SMPlayer:

VLC plays all DVDs just fine.
Please, what can be the reason for the problems?
PS: I forgot to mention, that I was definitely able to play DVDs with Kaffeine until yesterday. No upgrades on my system were made AFAIK.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I just had the same problem even though yours happened six months ago I couldnt figure out how to change /dev/dvd to /dev/sr0 in kaffeine so I did a quick workaround: I removed /dev/dvd and softlinked /dev/sr0 to /dev/dvd and now everything works perfectly. Oddly enough how you said yours didnt work in mplayer or kaffiene but did in vlc, mine didnt work at all in any of them!

My "top sites" no longer display and I cannot make new ones appear. Why?

I used to have Top Sites capability where my favorite websites were displayed as icons on one page so I could easily click the icon and go to that page. They disappeared in the last month and I cannot get them back nor can I create them again using the "add to top sites" tool at the top of the page. Why?

IDVD will not allow me to make dvd.

When I open iDVD I click on the Create a New Project. I type in what to save it as and where and choose the aspect ratio and click Create. Then nothing happens. The screen that is supposed to appear so I can create the dvd menu and such does not appear. It appears if I click on File - New or Open. Or if I click iDVD - Quit iDVD. Then the screen appears with the options to save/don't save/ and cancel. If I click on either of those buttons the iDVD program freezes up and I have to force quite it. I have used iDVD several times before and it started doing this recently. I would appreciate it very much if somebody could help me with this.

Log into another user account on your Mac and see if you can create and save a new project there. If not then a reinstall of iDVD seems indicated. To do so you'll have to first delete the current application and all files with "iDVD" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder, reinstall iDVD from the disk it came on and reapply the latest updaters.
If it does open and save it could be a preference file other than iDVD's that's the culprit. To see if that's the case try the following:
Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard/Snow Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
4 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button.

5 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

I recently bought my iPhone5 second hand off a friend. Having inserted my sim the O2 network logo and 3G symbols appear in the top left although there is no signal registered. I am also unable to make or receive calls as well as use the mobile internet.
The phone is registered to O2 so there is no network clash

It sounds like your phone is not connecting to the cellular provider network, and you are also unable to connect to the Wi-Fi network. I would recommend these troubleshooting steps from the article named:

Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
Check your phone settings:

See if Call Forwarding is turned on: Tap Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding.
Ensure that your software is up to date:
Check for a carrier settings update.
Check for an iOS software update.

If the iPhone has a SIM card, reseat the SIM card.
If the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s is on the Verizon network, dial *228 from the iPhone and select option 2 to update the Preferred Roaming List (PRL). The PRL determines the cellular towers the phone uses for cellular service, selecting those with the best signal strength.
Reset the network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Try to make or receive calls in another location.
Attempt to isolate to one network band:
If you're having the issue on LTE, disable LTE, if possible, and try again.
If you're having the issue on 3G/4G, disable 3G/4G, if possible, and try again.
Contact the carrier to check the following:
Your account is properly configured to use the specific iPhone that has the issue.
There are no localized service outages.
Your account doesn't have a billing-related block.
Your calls don't have errors on the carrier system.
Restore the phone as new.
