IDVD mini DV

Hello,
I'm importing from a Canon ZR-830 Mini DV Camcorder using iDVD's "OneStep Video" feature with "SIIG" brand FireWire 800 9-Pin to 4-Pin cable.
It all seems to work as planned except for one detail - the video on the DVD has random bits of distortion - I think the term is "artifacts" - blocks of pixelated squares.  They are equally visible on my computer display and on the old tube TV...but not on the original video cassette.
Is this a problem with the encoding?
Anyone know how to prevent these?
Tried to get a screen shot but iDVD isn't cooperating..
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Try bringing the video into your Mac via iMovie -- this will also give you an opportunity to look at the video before creating the DVD.  Video is hard work for your computer, so I'd also suggest quitting all other applications while you're importing into iMovie from the camcorder.
Before you import into iDVD, you can set iDVD Preferences so the encoding uses either the Professional or Best Performance algorithm.  You can also save a disk or two, and when you're finished in iDVD, use the Save As Disc Image option to create a virtual DVD which you can preview on your Mac.

  • Best sequence settings

I've just started as a Film and TV teacher in a local high school. In the past cameras were mini DV, sequences were PAL and export was to iDvd
Mini DV camcorders are now no longer available (the consumer ones anyway) and I have just ordered 2 Sony HDRXR150 - the AVCHD camcorders
My question is this: will the best quality DVD output be
    1. Edit in 1080i Apple Intermediate codec, export to quicktime movie, to idvd.
    2. Convert the AVCHD footage to Pal anamorphic prior to editing, then export to idvd.
I imagine the students would like to edit in HD, but I want to make sure the final output for assessment will be at its best
    thanks Steve

This gives more details of the technique.
It looks complicated when you read it but you will find it is very simple to do.
    1. Edit your AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie.
*However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-*
    a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.
    b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.
    c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".
    d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.
    e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.
    f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.
    g. Close it with the red button and click Save.
An alternative to clicking the grey video track is to simply enter "576" in the height box and this should make the opened video file jump to 16:9, whereupon clicking the red button of the video should give you the window allowing you to "Save".

  • Shared printing os9 and osx

I have a Mac G4 desktop with airport card connected by wireless to Airport Extreme base station, my G3 desktop is connected through a router attached to the single port of the base station. I have an Epson non-wireless printer connected to a USB hub and switch manually USB cables from the G4 and G3 (since I have not been able to get the G3 to share the printer)..
I can print wirelessly using my Macbook Pro.
I have a PC connected by USB to a Brother printer. The PC is connected wirelessly through the airport extreme base station. I loaded the Brother drivers by directly connecting the macbookPro to the Brother printer and it prints fine.
What I would like to be able to do is wirelessly print to the Brother from Macbook Pro and the G4. I configured printer sharing on the PC.
The PC and the Macs are on different floors of the house.
    Recommendations?

    Hi, G4M -
At a minimum, the G4 (DA) model came with the following CDs -
        Software Restore
        Software Install
        Apple Hardware Test
Mine also came with separate CDs for -
        iMovie 2
        iDVD
Mine was purchased directly from Apple. If yours was purchased through a reseller, it may have been bundled with additional software as part of a reseller promotion. If so, there may have been additional disks that came with it.
Very late machines of that model series may also have come with separate install CDs for OSX 10.0.3.
Note - the OS 9 version that shipped with the G4 (DA) models was a model-specific version of OS 9.1, one which used Finder v. 9.1.1. This means that they can not use a retail OS 9.1 Install CD. They can, however, use a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD.

  • New Mac Mini and iMovie6, & iDVD

    Hi
I was wondering if someone can answer these questions for me. I have a 12" powerbook and iMac 800mhz power pc G4 (lampshade kind), and I have been editing movies in iMovie and creating DVD with iDVD. But it's getting a bit slow.
I was thinking about getting the new Mac Duo core mini 1.83 GHZ with 2 gig of Ram to use as editing bay (iMovie) and to create DVD using iDVD.
Is the new Mac Mini good enough for that? Has anyone encounter any problem with previous mac mini using iLife? I don't edit a lot, maybe twice a year, 1 1/2 hour or 2 hour project. I already have external monitor (viewsonic) and apple keyboard and mouse.
or is it entirely better to go with iMac 24 inch.?
    Any thoughts?
    Alex

In context, the current $799 Mac mini has very similar overall performance to my G5 2.0 dual processor power mac, bought in October 2003, so while the drive is slower (not all that critical in video editing work since 5400rpm is certainly sufficient) a mini will perform notably better in iMovie, and render to iDVD much faster than your present 800MHz PB. Certainly, comparing the performance of my 800MHz TiBook in iMovie and Final Cut Express against even the older 1.5GHz G4 mini with IGb RAM, the mini was far smoother and more responsive to use.
There's no doubt that a 24" iMac would provide a faster, richer, environment in which to work, and if your budget would extent to that system it would seem a poor choice not to opt for that, but as has been said many, many times in these discussions, it's also worth bearing in mind that the mini's performance and capabilities are not defined by it's size. A Mac mini is far more powerful than merely for basic computing needs!

  • IDVD 7.04 on Mac Mini (Late 2009) Connected HDMI to 46 Toshiba LCD

I suspect that there is a video setting that is wrong, but has anyone been able to get iDVD to not crash with the hardware connection in the subject? iDVD keeps crashing right when I am ready to add videos to my project.

sounds like an awesome setup. Unfortunately, only one of my two monitors has an HDMI input. Also, even when hooking up just the one with HDMI to my Mac mini, it still displays "no signal" and I have two different converters I've tried. Perhaps it's just not meant to be. I will have to settle with DVI connections for both monitors...not the end of the world. I shouldn't complain.
Thanks for the quick answer and advise.

  • Idvd was not included with my mac mini how do I burn movies?

dvd was not included with my mac mini how do I burn movies?

It is now confirmed that iDVD and iWeb have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.
You can purchase the iLife 11 boxed disk at the online Apple Store while supplies last or possible at Amazon.com or eBay.com.
    Happy New Year

  • IMovie & iDVD running much slower on new Mac Mini Duo

Please help with some feedback. From what I have have learned to this point of my research everything has pointed in the direction that my upgrade from my previous Mac (a 1.5 ghz G4 Powerbook) to the newest Mac Mini Core Duo (w/ upgraded 1GB of memory) would be a large improvement in overall performance.
I noticed the difference almost instantly with the new Mini.
However, going into some of the apps that I really need this box for, namely iMovie and iDVD I am noticing that the perfomance is just around half as fast as my old 1.5 G4 Powerbook.
Has anyone out there seen this or know why this is happening? I am under the impression from benchmarks that this new machine should be a great deal faster at rendering, etc.
Mac Min Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

In other things, it seems much MUCH improved.
A Mac pal of mine mentioned that perhaps they loaded
the PPC compiled version on it and its being
    interpolated through Rosetta.
    Would that be possible?
That's exactly what I thought when I read your post, but I can't see how that could have happened because the installer would detect the processor and install the right version.
That doesn't mean you can't run the installer again and make sure the right version is installed, and then check it out to see if that resolved it.

I am burning my mini dvs to one step idvds. Some of the dvds have no audio while others have...how to fix this audio problem?

I'm guessing then, that you made this question from your iPhone, since you say the iPad has no Wi-Fi? You need to log into your iTunes account and update your financial information, however you can get into the iTunes Store.

How do I export a 98 min video edited in FCP 7 to IDVD for single disc DVD burning?

Your current settings should match the source material in your timeline. Though, it probably doens't matter what it is as long as your settings are not for a highly compressed format like h.264 or mpeg2.
iDVD should take any all "I" frame format and encode it. (All I frame formats include DV, DVCProHD, ProRes).

  • HT2476 new Mac mini, outdated iDVD and iMovie HD with OSX 10.8.2; fix ?

    I have a brand new Mac mini and during set up I imported settings from a Macbook running 10.5.8; now the iDVD and iMovie HD apps are outdated and the settings do not allow updates to the current version compatible with OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2;
    How do I fix this?

In my case, the .dmg can only be installed if iLife 08 is installed, so I install iLife 08 (nothing works from that in ML, but it doesn't matter), then install the 6.04 .dmg, and then update the entire iLife with 09 and then 11, running software update in between. At that point, every app works. During that process, the new iMovie versions will be installed and automatically create a previous version folder for 6.04.
    Right now I have a Powerbook G4.
I'll be purchasing a new iMac (Mountain Lion) in the coming months.  I would like to put both iMovie HD6 and the last version of iDVD on it.  I've read numerous threads on the iDVD installation.  I'm trying to make sure I understand all the steps to getting both applications installed and working correctly.
I have the install disks for
iLife 08 (says it can install on both PPC and Intel Macs)
    iLife 09  (with iDVD)
iLife 11  (older version with iDVD)
I certainly remember disliking iMovie 7 and therefore used the download from Apple to revert back to 6.0.4 on my Powerbook.  I did a search and happened to find in my Library an installer package labeled iMovie HD6 (the file info says version 6.0.4 and it's dated Feb 2008). Is this what I would have used to go back to iMovie HD6 from iMovie 7?  I also found a ton of other installer packages that I had no idea my powerbook must have automatically saved.  Included were numerous iDVD 7 update installers.
So would I take these steps on the new iMac with Mountain Lion?
Use the iLife 08 disk to do a custom install of only iMovie (or does the 6.0.4 installer only work if you've installed the entire iLife 08?)
Run the installer package iMovieHD6  to revert from iMovie 7 to HD6
Use the iLife 09 disk to do a custom install of iDVD
Update iDVD by running the update packages and then using the iLife 11 disk to ensure I get all the themes available for iDVD
Run software update to bring everything up-to-date
I happened to do an install of only iDVD from iLife 11 (iDVD) on another IMac running Mountain Lion and found that I had no choice but to install iPhoto along with it.  Since that was an older version I then had to do a reinstall of the current iPhoto from the App store.
    Do these steps sound logical?

  • Why can't I capture more than 6 min of 1 step IDVD?

My first capture was almost the whole tape, but now I can only capture 6 min plus at a time. I have deleted all of my other films etc, and emptied the trash, and still no luck?

Here's what iDVD Help says about OneStep:
Burning a OneStep DVD directly from a DV camcorder
You can skip the creative process completely and burn video footage or a movie directly from your DV camcorder to a DVD disc. When you insert the burned disc into a DVD player or a computer, the contents play automatically.
Autoplay DVDs are sometimes said to play in "kiosk mode" and are a good way to create demos or other presentations that play automatically and require no user interaction.
    To burn a OneStep DVD:
Insert the DV tape with your movie or footage into your camcorder.
Connect the camcorder to your computer using a FireWire cable.
If your camcorder uses a dock, put the camcorder in the dock and connect the dock to your computer. See your camcorder's instructions if you're not sure how to do this.
Switch your camcorder to VTR, VCR, or Play mode. If necessary, turn your camcorder on.
Open iDVD and click OneStep DVD. Or choose File > OneStep DVD.
Insert a blank DVD disc into the optical drive when you are prompted to do so.
The tape in the camcorder rewinds automatically to the beginning. If you already set up the tape to start where you want, press the Play button on your camcorder as soon as it starts to rewind. This stops the rewind process and the next stage, video capture, begins.
A progress dialog keeps you informed about everything that's being done. You can stop the process at any point before the burning stage to leave the DVD disc untouched.
Creating a OneStep DVD will take longer than simply burning an iDVD project to a disc because the video needs to be captured first. Plan on your computer being tied up for a period of time. You may want to do this when you don't have work to do on your computer for several hours, perhaps before bed or before you leave for work, depending on the amount of video on your tape.

  • Is there any hope of using iDVD 7 to burn DVDs (Leopard 10.6.6, Mac Mini)?

I've tried many of the suggestions in these discussions, short of reinstalling iDVD or wiping the hard drive and reinstalling OSX 10.6.6, and doing that seems excessive simply to use included Apple software. I have more than 260GB available on my hard drive, no external drives open (there are some connected both by FW and USB, but they are not even turned on, just connected to ports).
iDVD 7.1.1 won't even get past the menu before it fails and gives an error that the 'burn cannot be completed'. There are no 'extras' in the menu, simply ONE QT/iMovie/iDVD compliant 15-second video; no drop zones, no fancy anything, default text for the video 'button', no hyphens or special characters, simply one video from my camera and the application can't get past the menu.
Should I just go back to burning dvds from my powerbook G4 (tibook) through s-video to a dvd/vhs recorder?

Hi, and thanks for the quick response. Yes, I have deleted the iDVD preferences about a dozen times. I started out my first project with a positive attitude and set up to burn 4 videos (all non-copyrighted, from my own cameras and library), and decided to fill in some time with slide shows from pictures on the hard drive (not in iPhoto, but they showed up in the iDVD media area and tested fine following the iDVD 'how to' pdf.)
I had added audio (to the slides), but it was from an external 40-gb firewire drive, and one of the slide shows was from pics stored there.
I removed those externally-hosted files first, after trying several times to delete the plist file with no better results. Then I removed that hard drive from the picture and turned it off, so no external source files are in play.
I removed slide shows entirely from the media list after just removing them from the project and menu seemed to have no affect, partly since the error message mentions the 'menu/slideshows' in it's (boilerplate?) dialog box.
Tried 'burning a disc image' after each modification (reduction of number and length of files) to the project, based on recommendations here.
With each successive error (none of which got past the menu building phase) I removed another video file; deleted the menus entirely and tried 'new' menus, until I decided to remove all videos from the project and try just that one short 15-second video shot last week for posting on a web forum (it was not one of the original videos I hoped to use).
I shut off all 'drop zones' from the menus. I used the default fonts and text buttons that appear when you drag a file from the media list into the menu window.
I even tried rebooting the computer to clear any latent memory that might be causing a problem (as a 'shot in the dark'). After every change, I quit the project and iDVD and deleted the plist, then restarted iDVD and tried again. All to no avail.
I'm on a budget, that's why I downgraded from my old iMac G5 when it died and switched to the Mac Mini aluminum 4,1, and I'm not looking to upgrade my now useless Toast 5xx to a compatible Toast 10 (even if that might work).
    To recap:
    I started out full-bore with video and photos and music (latter two for slide shows);
After confirming everything worked together and there were no errors showing in the map view, and running through the slides and video files several times to make sure they 'worked', I tried to burn the disc (no disc image at this point, just a confident full-blown burn). Got the error in the menu phase.
Started reading the discussions forum (this place) for a couple hours looking at what problems others were having, and trying the suggestions posed therein. No luck.
Then decided to try deleting preference plist and creating a 'disc image' on the desktop of the entire original project. No luck.
Then multiple incremental changes to the original project until I was left with the single movie file to see if any of my original media files might be the problem. (I even made sure there were no special characters in the titles, menu buttons, etc of any of those files, as someone mentioned the menus don't like any 'special characters'.)
So, here we are. I am wondering if maybe the Mini is just not powerful enough to handle burning dvds? (It seems like it isn't platform based, since iDVD doesn't even get through the menu phase). This Mac Mini is about 1 month old.

  • Burning 83 min. QT movie in iDVD 4.0.1

My deadline is approaching fast and I don't have time to experiment. I have successfully burned 30 min. movies with iDVD. Does anyone foresee any problems with burning an 83 min. self-contained QT movie or can offer any foolproofing.
    Hurry! Thanks a bunch.

After close to 4 hours my computer spits out the DVD with this message: "Errors were found during the burning process. The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error OX73, 0X03." This is greek to me (no offense to Greece) I just need to burn this (along with 12 copies) before tomorrow.
    Desperate housewife.
PS I get better responses in FCP forum than in iDVD. Plus, I used FCP to produce the original QT movie. We're family.

I just bought a Mac mini to replace an aging PowerMac G5. I used Migration Assistant to move all my stuff over to the mini from the G5.

    Tyler,
Glad it's working, but here's a heads up.....your G5 (like mine) runs on PowerPC code.   Your new mini (like mine) does not.   Without Rosetta in lion or snow leopard ( though it can be added to snow leopard) PPC code won't run......so very few of your G5 apps should work.   Looks like SW update fixed your issue this time, but I personally would be wary of any app from your G5, and certainly any app that might run background code.    Did you use The " recent update to migration assistant" on your G5?
I had a lot of problems when I first used migration assistant to transfer apps from my G5 to my new mini....hopefully the new update to Leopard migration assistant will help others,  but I'd minimize app transfer based on my experience.

  • Size of Mini DV to imovie - then to idvd

I have 4 (1 hour each) mini dv to input to imovie which I want to eventually burn to idvd.
1 - How much space does each 1 hour mini dv take in imovie?
2 - When transferring to Idvd - how much can I transfer into idvd for burning?
3 - Can I import 2 mini dv tapes into 1 file in imovie and then import to idvd? Or will it be too large???
    I am working with imovie 4 & idvd4
    thanks

    1: 13GB
2: 120 minutes minus time for animated themes.
3: Yes, you can. For best quality (and for not boring your audience) stay under about 70 minutes per DVD.
