IDVD movie won't fit TV when played through DVD player

I imported photos to iPhoto, created a 16:9 movie in iMovie, then created a 16:9 Magic iDVD project. The burned disc plays and looks great on my mac. But when viewed on my 16:9 HD TV through a DVD player, all of the images are stretched well beyond the borders of the screen. The "TV Safe" option in iDVD seems related but appears to apply only for slideshows, not for iMovies. Can anybody tell me where I went wrong and how to fix it?

Steve,
It sounds like the default setting of your set top DVD player is 'Pan and Scan' instead of 'Letterbox'.
Go into the menu of your player and change the default setting for 'what to do when a 16:9 disc is inserted' to 'Letterbox'. If you can find it, the manual for your DVD player should tell you exactly how to do this.

  • Movies stall or hang up when playing on  DVD player

I've used both IDVD 5 and iDVD 6 but the problem continues. DVD's tend to "hang up" or "stick" at multiple scenes when playing on a DVD player. The same problem occurs on all sorts of DVD player of family and friends. This issue does not happen when playing the DVD on a computer. The movies are created in iMovie and the sent to iDVD with Themes added and then burned. I've tried disc immaages vs a burn - same result.
Any ideas what is causing this problem and how to overcome?

My iMac G5 is 2 months old, so probably not an issue. I am currently using Memorex 16X DVD's, but get the stall, hang up and freeze problem when playing on DVD players. This is not an issue playing back on computers. I started making movies on a Dell a year ago using Microsoft Movie Maker and experienced the same problem. Totally different systems, different applications...but the same issue.
All sorts of makes DVD players both in the U.S. and England and Canada have problems playing my DVDs.
I have tried saving as a disc image and the burning, but not a solution.
Is Toast better than using Apple's iDVD or disk utility to burn DVD's. Is there any way to control burn speed? Does Toast allow different burn speeds? Should I use 16X DVD's or 8X or whatever?

  • IMovie save on Harddrive and played through DVD player

I have a DVD player that can use a flash drive. Instead of burning my IMovie project in IDVD to a disc, how can i get a finalized IDVD movie on my flash/harddrive to play from the DVD player?

  • DVD created in iMovie and iDVD appears cropped when played in DVD player

    Hi all.
I have created a MPEG4 movie in iMovie 5 and exported it to iDVD 5 and brunt it to DVD (PAL). Now, when I play it in a DVD Player it appears to be cropped or zoomed in a bit. But when it is played through computer DVD player it works perfectly.
I have fiddled with settings and tried it in a few different DVD Players (PS3 made it worse!) but to no avail.
I cannot for the life of me work out what it happening. I haven't changed any settings in iMovie or iDVD because I can't find anything to change.
    Please help me!!!

    Hi
Most certainly nothing to do with either iMovie or iDVD if viewed on a TV (CRT)
Old TVs had to have what's called an OverScann (about 10% isn't viewable) but when
such material is played back on a Mac or LCD screen one will see all strange lines
and dotted bands that Text-TV uses etc.
To be able to get a perfect match:
    • Nobody can't - different TV set's varies
    • You can adjust to a specific TV but then You need FinalCut and by trial and error
get the precise shrinking of Your movie.

  • DVD burnt in BEST QUALITY but looks like a VCD when played on DVD player

Made a 115 mins movie in Final Cut Pro, exported it to Quicktime and made a project in iDVD 6. If I check the quality of the movie before I burn it, it is all right, I select BEST QUALITY on iDVD setiings before I burn it but, then when it's ready, I check it on the DVD player and it is in very low quality, like if it was a VCD, it shows little squares on the images. Not the whole video but several times during playback. I've burnt dozens of videos like this one before and it never gave me taht problem but the last 3 videos I've burnt it shows it.
    HELP ME PLEEEEEEASE!!!!!

I select BEST QUALITY on iDVD setiings before I burn it but, then when it's ready, I check it on the DVD player and it is in very low quality, like if it was a VCD, it shows little squares on the images.
Set it to Best Performance if you are concerned about the highest possible visual quality w/in iDVD6 (keep in mind you cannot exceed 1 hr. in this particular mode).
Also remember to burn from the disc image at 4x or slower using Roxio Toast or apple's Disc Utilities. I recommend using Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R for best results.
Good luck and hope this is Helpful.

  • Audio ok when playing on computer, but not there when playing on DVD player

I've made two DVDs on my MacBook: one where I dragged a variety of short films into iDVD (imported via iMovie but NOT edited on iMovie!) and burned it - this one plays fine on everyone's computers and DVD players. The second DVD I created with material edited in iMovie and then burned via Share -> iDVD and while that plays fine on my computer, the audio is "missing" when I play it on a regular DVD player.
I burned the DVDs the exact same way, used the exact same DVD stock, and played on the exact same DVD player, so what's going on? I don't think it's an iDVD problem, I think there's something (not) happening in iMovie...

    What format is the original?

  • DVD not working properly when played on DVD player

I created a DVD using FCP and DVDSP, it plays fine on my Mac and my regular DVD player. However, it plays once through on a TV Guardian DVD Player and then will not play again. I don't know much about these players but they filter foul language and such when playing DVDs. The DVD that I created doesn't have foul language or anything that would be considered objectionable on it.
Has anyone had experience with these types of players or this situation?

Another thing to check is your bitRates and whether you encoded the audio to A.Pack/Dolby. I have often seen machines play once or twice then start having playback issues or not play. It can be related to the encode rates (and it may not behave across different machines the same way, in other words it will continue to play fine on some players and not another)

  • Why do the cd'sand dvd's not have good resolution when played on dvd player

I shoot with a good camera(FX 1 sony) and when I edit and export to Quick time or compressor and burn a cd or dvd on Toast and then lplay it on a dvd player the resolution and quality on the TV is poor . I am learning to edit but am not going to continue burning until I figure this out. It should look good, n'est pas?

Need a lot more information before anybody can give advice...like how long your project is, what settings you are using on compressor...

  • Audio missing from part of final dvd when played in dvd player.

IT IS CRUNCH TIME! I'm creating a yearbook. The first eight chapters (Dedication, Staff and class portraits) do NOT have audio when I play the burned dvd in my player, although 2 submenus (Sports and Activities) do have audio. iDVD is updated to 6.0.3.

    Thank you for responding, Bengt.
I had students create music on Garage Band and they are in aiff. stored on iTunes on the Hard Drive, which has 41.1 GB available. Running Quicktime 7.1.6. The killer is that my movie runs fine with music on all scenes on the computer and only the first portion (Scenes 1-7) has no music when I play the burned DVD in the player at home. (Tried other DVD players, too) I did the entire burning process twice thinking that the encoding would solve the problem. No such luck.
I noticed in the DVD troubleshooting guide about audio that 6.0.1 solved the problem. If I have 6.0.3, does that mean that 6.0.1 is included, or should I download that software update?
Sorry, I'm a novice with technology and the school tech support for my k-8 school is limited.
Thank you so much for your help!

  • Exported slideshow from Iphoto11 to IDVD 7.12 so I could burn DVD for play on DVD player. Fine but show stops 1/2way through because DVD has 2 chapters. How do I eliminate chapters?

I exported slideshow from Iphoto 11 to IDVD 7.12 so I could burn DVD for play on DVD player. Fine, but then when playing on DVD player show stops about 12 way and starts over. Seems there are 2 chapters in show. I wan t show to play straight through until end. How do I elimiante chapters or solve problem. Thanks. Bob Low

    Try this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Play the disk image with DVD Player and see if you get the same start over half way thru.
Did you create the slideshow in iPhoto in the slideshow mode?
or were you in an album and then used the Share ➙ iDVD menu option?  What I'm trying to find out is if the slideshow in iDVD is a movie file or an iDVD slideshow with the photos from iPhoto? If it's the latter how many photos in the slideshow?

  • IDVD autoplay movie won't play in DVD player

My IDVD movie won't play in a DVD player when created in autoplay mode. It plays fine on my computer both in preview and on my computer's DVD player program and it works fine if I create a menu and button, just not if I create it in autoplay mode. I've tried it on my work compter and three DVD players and it won't play in any of them. Can anyone help, please?

    Hi Sue
    Thanks for responding.
I used a 16x Maxwell DVD-R. The same kind of disc worked fine with the movie when I had a menu.
    I'm afraid I don't know what a Patchburn is.

    Welcome to discussions.
Did you use a Data DVD by chance?
It needs to be a DVD-R with iMovie 4.
Are you using an external with Patchburn?

    Hi
Please describe How You go from PPT to iDVD. Via iMovie ?
If so - then convert Your .wma file to .aiff (same kHz) and use this in iMovie instead. (no .mp3 either)

  • Help - my DVD won't play on DVD player or pc

I have a new macbook pro, and have created a large photo album on iDVD. I have tried 3 times to burn it to a DVD to play it on my TV. The first 2 times the program said it only had less than a minute to complete, but went for more than an hour. The DVD's were burned, but would not play on DVD or PC, but would work on my Mac.
The 3rd time, it went through whole process and it actually completed and ejected the DVD, but when I put it in our player I got a "disk error" message.
I am using DVD-R discs. Can someone please help? Or other ideas on how to get a slide show burned to DVD to play on TV?
    Thanks

Did you create a slideshow on iDVD, or create one in iPhoto and put that into iDVD or create a slideshow in iMovie? How many photos are in your slideshow? Some DVD players will not play more than 99 photos, and other players will stutter/skip/pause for a few seconds and then resume playing.
Did you do it like this?
    From iDVD Help:
    +Creating a slideshow in iDVD+
+Using the slideshow editor in iDVD you can create slideshows from images in iPhoto or from images stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server. You can also include movies in your slideshow.+
    +To create a slideshow in iDVD:+
+Make sure the menu that the slideshow will be accessible from is showing in the iDVD window.+
+If you want the slideshow to link from the main menu, for example, the main menu should be showing in the iDVD window.+
+You can proceed in one of two ways:+

+Click the Add button in the lower left of the iDVD window, and select Add Slideshow from the pop-up menu. A button labeled My Slideshow appears on the menu.+

+Drag an album to the DVD menu. This automatically creates a button that links to the slideshow. The button has the name of your iPhoto album and, if the button is an image button, it automatically displays the first slide in the slideshow.+
+Double-click the button to open the slideshow editor.+
+The iDVD window changes to show the Photos pane if it is not already selected.+
+If you started by adding a My Slideshow button to your menu, the slideshow editor is empty, so you need to drag images to it from the Photos pane, described below.+
+If you started by dragging an album to your menu, the slideshow editor shows thumbnails of the photos in the slideshow. To view photos as a list instead, click the list icon in the upper right of the iDVD window.+
+Add, arrange, or delete photos or movie clips from the slideshow to create the sequence you want.+

+To add images, drag individual photos or folders from the Photos pane or from elsewhere on your hard disk or a connected server to the slideshow editor.+

+To add movies, drag individual movies from the Media pane or from elsewhere on your hard disk or a connected server to the slideshow editor.+

+To reorder the images or movies, select the ones you want to move, and drag them to a different position.+
+If you add a photo album and do not reorder the images, the slideshow displays your photos in the order they are organized in the photo album.+

+To delete an image or movie, select it and choose Edit > Delete, or press the Delete key.+
+Click the Settings button (shown below) and select the settings you want for the slideshow:+

+“Loop slideshow” makes the slideshow repeat continuously until the viewer moves to a different part of the DVD.+

+“Display navigation arrows” shows navigation arrows on the screen. It’s most helpful to display arrows when you set the slideshow to progress manually, which means the viewer controls movement from slide to slide. These arrows are simply a visual cue; the viewer must use the remote control to advance the slideshow.+

+“Add image files to DVD-ROM” adds copies of the photos and movies to the DVD disc so viewers can download them to their computers.+

+“Show titles and comments” lets you add titles and comments to the photos and movies. These are visible in the slideshow.+

+“Duck audio while playing movies” silences any soundtrack you have added to the slideshow while the movie in your slideshow play. This ensures that the slideshow soundtrack and movie audio do not play at the same time.+
+Click the Transition pop-up menu and choose a transition to smoothly move from one image to the next. Only one transition can be applied to a slideshow.+
+To preview a transition, click the Preview button (shown below). The iDVD remote control appears. Use your pointer to click the arrows in the remote control, which highlights buttons on your menu. Highlight the button to which you have added a transition and click Enter on the remote control. Click Exit to return to the slideshow editor.+
+Click the Slide Duration pop-up menu and choose the length of time you want each slide to stay on the screen. (You cannot set a custom duration time, and the duration you select applies to all slides in the slideshow.) Be sure to allow enough time for the transition you selected.+
+To let the viewer advance through the slideshow manually using a remote control, choose Manual. If you want to add a soundtrack to your slideshow, you don’t need to set the slide duration.+
+The slide duration you set does not apply to movies you add to the sideshow. Movies in a slideshow play in their entirety before the next slide appears.+
+Click the Return button to exit the slideshow editor.+
+The duration of your slideshow, in minutes, appears at the top center of the slideshow editor. As you add and remove images, transitions, and so on, you can keep track of how long the slideshow is.+
+When you add RAW images from iPhoto, the RAW files appear in the slideshow as JPEG images. If you choose to save the photos to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc, so that viewers can download them to their own computer, iDVD saves the RAW files, not JPEG images, there.+
+To learn how to add a soundtrack to your slideshow, see Related Topics below.+
+NOTE: A slideshow that you create in iDVD does not show up in the Media pane and is therefore not accessible for use in other iDVD projects.+
Did you create a disk image with your iDVD project? That can often help pinpoint burning issues.
    From iDVD Help:
+You can test your project before you burn it by saving it as a disc image. The disc image of your project is a fully encoded version of the project that you can play in DVD Player (which comes on your Mac) or burn to a disc later. You can preview the disc image to make sure your project plays correctly and then make changes, if necessary, before burning a disc.+
+To create a disc image of your project:+
    +Choose File > “Save as Disc Image.”+
    +Type a name for the disc image.+
+Choose where you want to store the disc image.+
    +Click Save.+
+Double-click the disc image icon when the disc image is ready.+
+Launch DVD Player, in your Applications folder.+
+Your DVD project begins playing on your computer. Use the controller to navigate to and view all the content on your DVD. If everything works, the DVD you burn will work in most newer consumer DVD players and computers with a DVD drive.+

  • My itunes loses the sound when playing through TV/receiver

My itunes loses the sound when playing through TV/receiver.  It is my 2nd Apple TV,  I have a Mac and PC and I have used 2 different receivers.  Any help?  If I start the music through Apple TV is doesnt skip but then I cant have it playing through computer at the same time.  It amazes me how these littles things arent fixed yet.

I have almost the exact same problem, except that mine is without the iTouch. My itunes is working perfectly - uploading music from CD's, searching for music, syncing with my iPod classic. However when i ask it to play any music it will say that it is playing yet not only will no sound come out but the timer bar will not move either. it is the same with music in the itunes store and happens regardless of what else is happening on my laptop.
i know my sound works fine with all other programs, and i read on another forum that 'repairing' itunes through the control panel fixes it, however this is not the case.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
