IDVD on Lion OS X - Custom Install iLife '09

Since iDVD is no longer offered by Apple as part of the "iLife package" that comes with new Macs running Lion OS X (10.7.x) I was searching for info about custom installing iDVD from an iLife '09 package .  I stumbled across a few threads (including this one) but none that I found clearly outlined how to do it so I thought I'd add this post for folks that follow
The iLife '09 package contains iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb and Garageband.  If you want iDVD you'll need to buy a copy of iLife '09 or a Mac Box Set which includes OS X 10.6, iWork '09 and iLife '09 to get it.
I wanted to install iDVD '09 while avoiding conflicts with iMovie '11, iPhoto '11 and Garageband '11 (and I didn't have use for iWeb '09 since it's no longer supported).
To custom install iDVD '09 from an iLife '09 package disc...
- Be sure that iPhoto '11, iMovie '11 and Garageband '11 are already installed (available from the Mac App Store if needed).
- Insert the iLife '09 disc, click "Continue" and for each item in the left-hand menu including "Introduction", "Read Me", "License" and Destination".
- Let it run the initial application search to determine which applications to install.  (This will allow it to find the newer installations of iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband.)
- Click "Continue" until you reach the "Installation Type".
- Click on the "Customize" button.
- On the next screen select iDVD.  (iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband were appropriately greyed out since they were already installed.)
- After you've selected iDVD click "Continue" and let it finish.
iDVD installed on my late 2008 iMac and my late 2010 Macbook Air, both running Lion OS X 10.7.3 and works as expected.
Hope this helps anyone that follows!

From what I've read on these forums if you buy iLife 11 as a DVD, Not Download, you get iDVD ?11?.
That's what I thought as well...and it may be possible, but I couldn't track anything definitive down.
An iLife '11 disc isn't available from Apple that I know of.  Amazon offers an "Old Version" of iLife '11 but there's no mention of iDVD.
Apple doesn't mention iDVD on the main iLife page either.  However they do mention it on the iLife '11 iDVD page.  ???  When you click on "iLife '11" it takes you to the Mac App Store where iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband are individually sold...but no iDVD.  So I may be missing something.
My late 2010 Macbook Air came with iLife '11, but not with iDVD.  I've also read on forums that if you do a fresh install of OS X 10.7.x on a Mac that came with iLife '11 that you can contact Apple and somehow get iDVD.  I've also read other posts that say that you can't.  Very confusing.  Perhaps someone will come along with a clear answer.
In any case, I wanted iDVD on my late 2008 iMac (which of course didn't come with Lion), so installing it from my iLife '09 disc did the trick.

I am using a new imac with osx lion 10.7.5 and have just bought Apple iLife 11 on dvd so that I can install iWeb and iDVD, as macs no longer ship with these apps. When I click on install iLife I get a message saying "iLife.kpg was signed with an invalid certificate.
Next problem is that when moving through the installer and get to custom install, as I only want to install iDVD and iWeb, I am presented with the option to install iDVD, Sounds & Jingles and iWeb, but not sure what is going on with the other 3 options iLife Support etc, they seem to be greyed out but still look like they may install over the top of the newer versions already on my imac. Is it ok for me to just go ahead and hit install? Or do I have a problem?

Yep, just install iDVD (plus sounds and jingles) and iWeb if you want it (but note that iWeb apparently won't work if you upgrade to Mountain Lion).
Then use Software Update to get any late iDVD updates.

  • I needed idvd, but since my iMac is newer, I didn't have idvd on it. I installed iLife 11. I should not have installed the iPhoto part because it was 9.1 and my iMac was 9.2. So now my iPhoto wouldn't work. I went to iPhoto Library organizer.

I needed iDvd, but since my iMac is newer, I didn't have iDvd on it. I installed iLife 11. I shouldn't have installed the iPhoto part because now my iPhoto wouldn't work since iLife 11 was 9.1 and my iMac had 9.2. So I used iPhoto Library Manager to create a new library. That was working, but my computer ran out of hard drive room since my original iPhoto had 137 GB of photos. My new iPhoto library had the majority of my pics and the iPhoto now worked with those pics. But now I still had all of those original pics in my hard drive. I thought that by getting rid of the original iPhoto on the iPhoto Library Manager I would get rid of all of those original pics. I now have no access to them but they are in my hard drive and I can't do much with my iMac because it is all clogged up with those original pics - I think. How do I get rid of my original iPhoto pics out of my hard drive?

What system are you running?  If it's Mt. Lion go to the App Store and sign in with the Apple ID you used to purchase the Mac.  Go to Purchases and download iPhoto again. The current version is 9.4.3.
If you're unable to download iPhoto from the App Store you can reomstall iPhoto from the iLife 11 disk and  update it from the Apple Downloads website  to the highest version you can get to (I was able to update all the way to 9.4.3 via the updaters). Then if iPhoto can't open the library  use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild it and it will rebuild it compatible with your version of iPhoto via this iPLM tutorial: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

  • I'd like to use iPhoto '09 with Lion. Tried to install from time machine back-up no go. Tried to install from iLife '09 DVD no go.

I'd like to run iPhoto '09 on Lion. Tried to install on Lion from Time Machine backup. Got message iPhoto won't work because of a missing Library file. Tried to install iPhoto '09 from iLife '09 DVD. Got message that it cannot be installed on my system. iMovie runs previous versions and iTunes runs previous versions.
Why can't iPhoto run on Lion? My wife has over 10,000 photos in her library and she's taken the time to sort them into folders. I've recovered the library with the folder sort but have to use it on an external drive with a Snow Leopard system on it. The latest iPhoto ('11) has no provision for organizing into folders. I'd really like to have everything in one place with one OS (Lion) and two iPhoto apps '09 and '11 and I suppose 2 photo libraries. I've been trying to resolve this ever since iPhoto '11 came out and I installed it. I can't begin to tell you how difficult it is to answer the question " Where are my folders?" brian25

I tried to check the Library setup on iMovie and iTunes. The iMovie Libraries seem to be part of the applications and my iTunes applications have become Russian so I have another problem. I tried to install iPhoto '09 again from my iLife '09 disk. When I selected "Custom Install" to load iPhoto only, the box I got said " A later version of this application is already installed" The iPhoto item which I would choose for a custom install says "skip". Yesterday I ignored this and went on with an install. The final screen said "Installation Successful" There was no iPhoto '09 on my hard drive. As far as I can tell, you cannot load iPhoto '09 from a Time Machine backup. There is no Lion compatable iPhoto '09 in the App store, and iPhoto '09 will not install onto Lion from the iLife '09 disk.I don't understand exactly what you mean by "load my backup and convert again" Do you mean go to the app store and access my purchases and re- download iPhoto '11 and reinstall it and re-convert my iPhoto library? I suppose what I should have done originally was to duplicate my iPhoto '09 library and put it on an external drive for safekeeping. Who knew it wouldn't install on Lion from Time Machine? When I downloaded iPhoto '!! from the app store I should have duplicated it and saved a copy to an external hard drive for safekeeping and then proceeded with installing iPhoto '11 on my hard drive.I suppose when the Thunderbolt concept is fully realized and monster Thunderbolt external droves are in common use this will seem a lot easier. I have rebuilt my iPhoto '09 library and have it on a hard disk that has a bootable copy of Snow Leopard and a working copy of iPhoto '09 also. I think you are telling me to reinstall iPhoto '11 on my internal hard drive and reconvert the iPhoto library used by iPhoto '11. Right? brian25

  • When installing iLife, can I only upgrade iPHoto and not iMovie or iDVD?

When I install iLife, Is it possible to only upgrade iPhoto and not iMovie and iDVD? I've heard the new versions of iMovie and iDVD are not as robust. If I do this, does iPhoto '08 still integrate with the last version of iDVD?

If you do a custom install you can select what gets installed
I believe that You also can move the old versions so the new versions get installed and you still have the old versions - I understand that Old Toad has numerous versions of iLife programs on his system - search the iPhoto forum for his posts to see what he has to say about that
And you can download iMovie 6 from the Apple download site - a free install for iLife '08 owners
So you can have the old and the new

  • Problem custom installing idvd

I am trying to install just idvd from a iLife DVD I have just purchased and I am afraid that it is going to overwrite my installed newer versions of iPhoto, iLife Support, iMovie and Garage band which came installed with my Mac Book Pro.  The custom install page allows idvd to be ticked but the other programmes like iPhoto and iLife Support are ticked but greyed out.  Yet in their Action columns it states in bold "Install".
iMovie is greyed out and is not ticked and in it's action column it states "Skip".  Garage Band is also greyed out but has a dash in the box and "Install" in the action box.    Sound & Jingles and iWeb have boxes that I am allowed to untick and they state "Skip" in their action boxes - I am unsure if it is safe to install these or not.
When I untick the Sound/Jingles and iWeb the install window says that I need 1.3GB free to load the programmes as selected.   The iDvd programme alone states that it is 274MB, Life Support is 131MB, iPhoto is 894MB and GarageBand is "Zero KB"    I am worried because it seems to me that when you add up the file sizes of the programmes it is threatening to install not only iDvd but iPhoto, iLife Support and GarageBand (Although that states Zero KB).  I have looked on the web to see if anyone else has had this issue but I have failed to find the specific advice I need.    Can anyone help me please before I mess up my programmes?   Many thanks Ken

  • Trying to install idvd on lion version but does not let me....it would be better if i go to older version

im trying to install idvd on lion version 10.7.2 but does not let me....it would be better for me if i downgrade my version

You are attempting to use one the Install DVD's that came with your old Mac, these discs are machine specific so that is why it won't work plus this is a violation of the license agreement. You will need to buy iLife 11 if you want to get iDVD, it is still available from Amazon. Here is a link:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iTunes in Mac OS X Tiger is outdated. Open  > Software Update to install the latest iTunes version for Tiger.
If you need iTunes 10.7 or a newer version, you have to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. First, check that your Mac is supported > http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 If it is, buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After buying Snow Leopard, make a backup of your data, insert the DVD and upgrade to Snow Leopard. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, and install the latest Snow Leopard version. Finally, run Software Update again to install iTunes 11.0.4. If you want to install iTunes 10.7 instead, download it from the Apple website > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1576

Did you install the iDVD Extra Content on the iLife 09 disk when you installed iDVD?
Check in your HD/Library/Application Support folder for an iDVD folder.  In it will be the iDVD themes.
Make sure that folder is selected in iDVD's Advance preference pane.
Also run Disk Utiltiy to repair disk permissions.

  • Installed iLife 11 and iPhoto is damaged or corrupted.  I see my photos in iDVD media, though.

Cannot open iPhoto.  Message says iPhoto is damaged or corrupted.  This happened after I installed iLife 11 and after I used iDVD to burn slideshows.  I do see thumbnails of my photos in the iDVD media.  How do I get my iPhoto and iPhoto library back?

    Reinstall iPhoto.
    - after backing up, of course.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Did custom install of iLife from Leopard disk, want to install the rest.

When I bought my macbookpro a couple of years ago, it was supposed to have Leopard but didn't, so the Apple Store gave me a Leopard install disk. I installed Leopard (not an upgrade, an actual fresh install) but I guess I did a custom installation and didn't install all of the iLife apps (like iMovie).
Now I want to install those apps, but when I get into the installation process, it looks like I may have to either archive the entire OS and reinstall or install all of the iLife apps. Is there a way to just install the uninstalled apps?
My Leopard disk is 10.5.1, but the current version on my computer is 10.5.8, I suppose due to periodic upgrades.
    Thanks!

Don't boot up from your original install disc. Instead, insert it, and browse it with Finder. You should see a "optional install software" or some similar looking thing (I can't remember its exact title). That's what you want to use to install iLife without reinstalling the whole system.

    Hello TchrDi,
I suggest this article named Archived - iDVD: Troubleshooting issues with burning discs found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1583.
It is pretty lengthy, but also pretty thorough.
