IDVD "Professional" quality is really bad. Please help.

I shoot 1080i on a sony hd cam (minidv), then import and edit in FC Express using apple intermediate codec 1080i60 and export to QT as a NON-independent file using same settings. The final movie file is 1920x1080 which is dragged into iDVD '08 and burned at "professional quality".
When I burn to dvd and play on my flatscreen in an sd dvd player at home, it looks like crap, even down to large pixelations around the text. I know not to expect HD but the SD should look better than this.
Now, when I play this same dvd in my macbook's dvd player, it looks better than the tv. But this is played at actual size which is only about 1/4 of my screen whose resolution is 1920x1200. I will select the "actual size" mode on the dvd controls. When in full screen mode, it does lose resolution but surely not to the degree as playing on my home flatscreen. So why is iDVD making a 1080 movie to a ~400 movie? or how best to make this look good on a flatscreen. I don't expect HD but it has to be better than what I am getting.
Any suggestions are appreciated and if anyone knows if DVD Studio Pro will solve this, please advise.
Aloha:
-Charlie-

Hi,
Thanks for the info. Bengt, I understand what you mean about pixel size (like grain size showing up in big enlargements in conventional film photography). I'm eventually going to get a new widescreen TV, but I don't need a particularly big one in our rather small room. I would prefer to stay with standard resolution wide screen, and my available iMac hardware/software, as I don't (yet anyway) want to get into Blue ray equipment. Also I make DVDs for other people who don't have Blue Ray. Therefore, what would you consider the screen size I could go up to without the pixels showing too much (I'm in the U.K. - PAL 25fps). I'm thinking a 32" maximum 16:9 screen, would be the biggest I'd want. What do you think?
Yours, Makey.

  • IDVD '06 quality is really bad, why?

I just used iDVD '06 to create a home DVD. When I used iDVD '05, the quality was good and I was using best performance mode, the DV used SP mode. For iDVD '06, I used the best quality and DV used LP mode. I used 4:3 standard TV mode for both iDVD '05 and '06.
The result of iDVD '06, the video I can see many pixels and waves(the dark areas are jumping?). I cannot explain well, but it just looks very digitized. Does anyone know how to fix the problem? Thank you.

LP mode when I recorded the video?
I would avoid LP mode when you can, but it is more for reliability than quality. LP mode should be just as good quality wise, provided that you can sucessfully get it into iMovie/FCD/FCP. There's no less information digitized in LP mode, it's just crammed onto less tape - which can cause problems importing. But if the "bad" portions look good on your Mac before burning, I doubt this is causing your problem. However, I guess it is possible that iDVD compression is magnifying some defects casued by faulty LP importing.
do you think I may need to reinstall the whole system
Nope. Try two things. 1) "Save as Disk Image" and view the image (without burning) on your computer. Are the defects still there?
    2) Also try making an image with an older video file, not recorded in LP. Does it look better ?

We regularly use Cocktail by Maintain software. You run the whole gamut of options but the important one is in System - Databases - Rebuild launch services. Also in Files - Caches - then clear the lot.
This is just houskeeping really but there are so many 'links' in A/cad it needs 'cleaning'

  • I RECENTLY BOUGHT SOME SONGS FROM ITUNES BUT THE SOUND QUALITY WAS REALLY BAD. I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO?

i bought some songs yesterday that i really liked but when i was listening the sound quality was really bad. it just ruined the song almost. i am not sure what to do about it.

You might try listening to the songs from other devices or systems to make sure it doesn't have to do with your computer specifically.
Also try to preview the songs from your computer and any other devices if possible to see if the preview sounds any different.
If you're still having issues you should contact iTunes support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
Once you get there, choose Music Purchases from the list, then choose Music Purchases again, and it will let you Email them directly about the issue.
Give them the names of the songs you bought and as detailed a description of the audio issue as possible.

  • Problem Starting iDVD. Need it tomorrow! Please Help

    Please Help Me!
I have iDVD '08 installed on my computer. I recently have been having trouble getting it to open. It will start and give me the project chooser, but when I try and create a new project it goes all rainbow wheel on me and crashes. I followed this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1972 and it isn't working. Please Help me. I need it tomorrow for tomorrow so if you have any ideas please post them.

Quartz composer is an Apple component of your Mac OS:
+A visual programming language for processing and rendering data. Using OpenGL, Core Image, Core Video, and other technologies to build an API and serves as a simple visual programming paradigm. Quartz Composer is a core technology of the Mac OS X. Quartz Composer creations work in any QuickTime-aware application (beginning with Mac OS X v10.4), from the Quartz Composer application, or embedded into Cocoa or Carbon applications.+
Have a look at this. Maybe a component needed by iDVD is missing. You may be able to reinstall it from your system disks.

  • Dock acting really weird - Please help!

After installing the Mobile ME update and iTunes 7.7, my dock has been acting really weird.
    1. I usually set the default dock size at the smallest possible. However, now when you left click on the separator of folders and applications, it allows the dock to become smaller than possible when setting from the Preference Pane
    2. The dock automatically becomes smaller over time until the icons are really tiny.
Is this a bug encountered by anyone else? It really bugs me that I have to keep pulling the dock to a standard size. Can someone please help me out of this mess?

    Hey VK
    Thanks for the quick response.
I did just that. Deleted the com.apple.dock.plist under my user home directory/Library/Preferences.
While it reset the dock, the problem still remains. You can view the problem by
    1. Setting the dock to the smallest possible size via the Preference Pane
    2. Turn on magnification and bring it closer to the left side of the adjustable bar
    3. Now, use your mouse to drag the dock by the separator
Observation: The dock will become smaller than is "set" by the bar in Preference Pane
    4. Click on the bar in the preference pane, set at small, the dock will resize itself again
    5. Choose the dock to be set on the right
    6. Choose it to be set at bottom
Observation: The dock is a LOT smaller than it could ever have been.
    7. Click on the smallest possible size in the preference pane, the dock resizes itself
    8. The dock keeps getting smaller over time still. =(!

Hi SaintPrado, and welcome to the forums!
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.
Also, Get Temperature Monitor - 4.51 to see if it's heat related...

  • Idvd (professional quality) vs DVD Studio pro quality difference

    The Short question:
I understand DVDSP gives you much more control on menus on your dvd, but if I'm not concerned about additional controls, and only about preserving video quality, is it worth using DVDSP and possibly compressor or am I getting the same quality on less then one hour dvd's using 'professional quality' encoding with iDVD?
    The long question:
I know this has probably been talked about many time, so I apologize.
I'm creating home movies with FCP from SD DV footage. Being Standard definition, I would like to preserve as much quality as I can when putting my movies onto DVD. Most of my movies, as well as DVD's are less then one hour.
I just went through the excellent Lynda.com tutorials on DVD studio pro by Larry Gordon.
    Thanks for your understanding.

Thanks guys for your reply.  After finishing the tutorials on both DVDsp and Compressor.  I think I'm sold.  The flexibility is worth the extra effort.  Actually after learning the interfaces, they aren't as daunting as I first thought.  Compressor is dead easy and DVDsp is fun due to the control you have over your dvd.  ALSO, using DVDsp over idvd has fixed a VERY annoying aspect ratio issue I have ever since using idvd.  Where my DV 16:9 footage is being cropped to 4:3 on certain dvd players. I've battled that issue with no resolution for way too long.  No problem when the DVD is made from DVDsp.   I will miss the beautiful canned templates supplied in idvd, but I'm sure there are templates for DVDSP I'll be able to find. I'm sure templates are limited due to they expect you to create your own. I can deal with that.
    Thanks again.
DVDsp is the way to go!

Whenever I connect my iphone 4 to my lap top i get a message saying digital still camera and the my laptop crashes, it is really frustrating, please help

Reinstall iTunes. Make sure you follow the instructions in this support document to the letter. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923.
You may have some problems because Apple has not certified that everything works with Windows 8 yet.

  • "Preparing iPhone for restore"since last 2 hr.s nothing really happening please help

"Preparing iPhone for restore but nothings happening Could anyone please help?

I appear to have managed to fix the issue through googling the error code (rather than ignoring it this time), and figured I'd add the solution here for anybody in the future.
I simply moved my cable connecting my pc and iPhone to a USB port in the back of my computer rather than using the ones in the front and the process kicked off almost instantly without any further issues.

I'm still getting all these annoying popups windows, although I followed every solution suggested(safari extensions, block the pop ups) it's really disturbing please help

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Installed the OS X Yosemite my computer  froze up daily, trying to reinstall then I got really stucked, please help

My computer kept freeze up daily with OS X Yosemite installed a while ago, and I followed the other  instruction to do "OS X" Recovery to: (1) erased my start up disk (2) Reinstalling Mac OS X Yosemite.
While  about 18 or 20 minutes remaining from the installation, it went back to 2 hours 57 minutes but stuck there. I let my computer run over night but it was still at 2 hours 57 minutes. so I cancelled the installation which seemed to be the only choice.
I tried again today, erased my start up disk and reinstalled again, same situation happened again, when the remaining time said around 20 minutes, it went back to 2 hours 56 minutes and stuck there.  I cancelled it again.
I read some other instructions in this community and did a hard shutdown and restarted while hold down the command key + R key. it took me to the disk manager screen and the only choice I had was the OS X Lion version.
I tried to install the OS X Lion, it said that will take 3 hours or so, after 20 minutes, a screen came up and said I need to turn off the computer by press the power button down then turn the computer on again.  And I did.  When I turn on the computer again, with Comand + R key pressed, I had to wait for an
internet recovery before I went back to the disk manager and trying to reinstall the OS X system. It kept coming back to ask me to turn the power off…
what can I do?  Please help,
    MacBook Air

Boot back into the Recovery Partition. Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.
