IDVD .proj files are self-sustaining?

I couldn't easily find this in iDVD help so just thought I would post here for confirmation.
I've had several videos that I imported from VCR using a XLR8 InterView audio/video out to USB/audio in cable, along with USBVision software. Those ended up as .mov files on my hard drive.
I then used Quicktime Pro to divide up the videos into segments. Then I created new projects in iDVD with various video segments, encoded/burned discs. My .proj files are now anywhere from 2.1 GB to 4.3 GB.
My question is, can I delete all of the .mov Quicktime files if all I may ever want to do is re-open the iDVD .proj file and burn another disc? I assume it's copied/encoded everything it needs and won't seek any reference to the .mov files, but wasn't sure.
Thanks
Nick

Hello, Nick,
Welcome to the discussions.
If I understand your question, you have several iDVD projects and you would like to keep the projects in order to burn disks in the future. You want to delete the original .mov files to free up drive space, and you want to be sure it is ok to do this.
NO, NO, NO!!!! DON'T DELETE THEM YET!!! READ ON * FOR WHEN YOU CAN SAFELY DELETE THEM!!!
It does not work that way. iDVD projects are more like virtual projects that pull the various audio, video, and photo files together when encoding/burning a disk. The media do not stay in the iDVD project. If you delete those files, iDVD will not be able to locate them to burn another disk.
*The way to accomplish what you want is to go back to each iDVD project, open it, and under File, select 'Save as Disk Image' to have iDVD create a disk image of your project.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6733.html
You will need to do this for each iDVD project you wish to save. Name it the same name as your iDVD project so that you will know what it is. A disk image is a self-contained file that is an exact replica of your iDVD project. Once it has been created, you can use the disk image to burn more disks, using Disk Utility (found in your Applications folder).
The process of creating a disk image can take some time, depending on how large the project is. It looks the same as the burn process, but the end result is a disk image file, not a DVD.
*Once you have ALL your iDVD projects saved as disk images, you can safely delete ALL of the movie files, .mov, quicktime, .dv, whatever you used. You can also delete ALL of the iDVD projects themselves. If you ever want to burn another DVD, just use Disk Utility and the disk image of whatever iDVD you want.

  • IDVD Render Files (are there any that can be deleted?)

    Hi all
    Just to make certain, whether or not iDVD is still working from an older iDVD rendered file, is there somewhere to delete these files? Render files?
    (like FCE stores them)
    Perhaps not
    In this particular case, I deleted an old movie file, but created a new one with the same name. I just wanted to make sure because I still see the same glitch from a particular frame in the movie.
    (I'm sure it's the source media)
    I'm dragging QT movie files directly into iDVD
    (have not had any problems)
    Thanx

    No information here - guess there are no iDVD render files
    Thanx

  • IPhoto 05 Files are Self-Corrupting

    My oldest iPhoto files have become corrupted. These are files that I imported in 2004. (I later upgraded to iPhoto '05.) I can see the thumbnails but when I try to open a picture I get white space where the picture should be and, of course, the endless circle.
    When I slide the thumbnail to the Desktop and try to open it I get:
    "Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize."
    When I try to access the photo from another applications I get:
    "The image file can't be used because you don't have access privileges, or because it has no content or is corrupted."
    Does anyone know how I can access/uncorrupt these files?
    I can't "revert to original" on them because I never made changes to them.

    I am no expert, and possibly someone who is here will know better. Have you tried looking in the "photos" folder on your hard drive to see if these pics are still there. If so, try double clipping a couple to see if they open in preview. If they do, I would re import them to iPhoto.
    Just a thought! Hope it works for you!

  • All files are locked, a new entry in permissions and more

    Following instructions from here on how to try to correct another issue, I was repair permissions and to boot in safe mode. Since then all kinds of things are messed up.
    I had to reset PRAM because the home and boot screens were were all stretched out of whack (this situation has occured once before shortly after getting this new machine)
    EVERY SINGLE DATA FILE created prior to this safe mode is now LOCKED. EVERY ONE!!!!!!  If I try to save any file so far I have tested, I am told the file is locked and I do not have permissions. My user mode didn't have administrative control before, but I changed that because unlocking everything to use it was more complicated having to enter the username and password. New files created are also locked. However, a new Pages file I have tested shows locked but it will save to the same file with a CMD-S.
    Having to unlock files to save work in them really slows work. Apple not allowing Save As on Apple apps is getting really tedious. I tried with a non-Apple app (PhotoShop) and its files are locked after creation. This means I have to unlock every stupid file before I can save it, then it relocks If I go into Get Info to unlock the file, as soon as i close that window, the file shows locked when I do a new Get Info. This is not a good user experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have hundreds of thousands of files used in publishing, graphics, photos, and music. I tried to save an existing Photoshop file back to the Desktop and was told I could not save because was locked - that I needed to unlock the file or enclosing folders. When Photoshop closes it says can't save Preferences because file is locked.
    If I unlock the Sartup drive it relocks as soon as the Get Info window closes.
    In Sharing and Permissions the user called Everyone has a custom settings and some files even have two Everyone entries. Newly created files have had the User with Read & Write and Staff and Everyone with Read Only. My user folder Get Info shows locked with the user, staff and everyone with Read & Write permmissions. If I unlock in Get Info it reverts to locked after I close the Info window.
    Safari opens to the same page on this forum where another problem was discussed. I have reset selected items in Safari that I thought might have caused this, but no change.
    Pages keeps opening a page that was thrown in the trash and is not even on the computer (at least doesn't show in the finder),
    Numbers keeps opening a file that was opened and saved days ago.
    iDVD will open the same project each time, even if something else has been worked on since.
    I have cleared recent entries in these programs and the field keeps coming back when I open again.
    I unchecked  the Restore windows when quitting option in General Sys Prefs and when I open it again it is checked. I know that Lion will reopen a page if I quit without closing the window first. Now, at least with Apple apps, the same file opens now whether it exists or not as well as the new file I am opening by clicking on it.
    I have run permissions check in Disk Utility several times.
    It seems that it is affecting Apple apps that remember where there were last and the visiting history.
    Autosave on apps other than Apple can't save because the files are locked and I get error messages.
    iPhoto files saved on a firewire drive are also show locked but testing on a duplicate file, I found I can edit with PhotoShop and it will save the changes.
    With Finale, it has saved the files, even though locked. The odd thing is that in the finder it shows the correct creation and modifided dates, but it shows an old last opened date. Pages documents show all three with correct dates/times.
    I suspect there is at least one if not more Pref plist files that needs to be fixed, but I have now idea where to start.

    HI,
    Make sure you are logged in as the admin user.
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon then click: Get Info
    At the bottom of the Get Info window, click the gold padlock icon. You will be prompted for your admin password.
    Under Privilege where you see: Read & Write "toggle" the arrows to set your permissions for system / admin etc.
    Close the Get Info window.

  • Python, distutils, data_files - Yay! I know where my data files are.

    After a long and painful research i have finally found usable way to make distutils propagate location of data files to installed application.
    Python's distutils allow user to specify location for data_files but there's no standard way to acess them.
    Yes sure ,there are few workarounds :
    1) distributing data_files as package_data
      - Do you really want to have ie. README.txt in /usr/lib/python/... ?
    2) Accessing those data_file using $sys.prefix
    - hmm. Here you hardcode $sys.prefix relative path to setup.py like this:
    setup(...., data_files=['share/myverycoolpackage/doggie.gif'], ..)
    - and access it this way:
    os.path.join(sys.prefix, 'share/myverycoolpackage/doggie.gif')
    This works fine, but you're making assertions about layout of users $sys.prefix directory. Not talking about possibility to specify --data-dir during installation.
    Both are not really usable. Here goes the solution:
    Idea: Install additional 'package.ini' file, that will get modified during install and will hold location of data files.
    This package.ini will be installed as package_data, so that it will be accessible relatively to sources.
    And this is how i did it:
    New command to install process:
    from os.path import *
    import re
    class package_ini(Command):
    Locate package.ini in all installed packages and patch it as requested
    by wildcard references to install process.
    user_options = []
    def initialize_options(self):
    pass
    def finalize_options(self):
    pass
    def visit(self, dirname, names):
    packages = self.distribution.get_command_obj(build_py.__name__).packages
    if basename(dirname) in packages:
    if 'package.ini' in names:
    self.patch(join(dirname, 'package.ini'))
    def patch(self, ini_file):
    print 'patching file' + ini_file
    with open(ini_file,'r') as infile:
    file_data = infile.readlines()
    with open(ini_file,'w') as outfile:
    for line in file_data:
    _line = self.patch_line(line)
    if _line:
    line = _line
    outfile.write(line)
    def patch_line(self, line):
    Patch an installed package.ini with setup's variables
    match = re.match('(?P<identifier>\w+)\s*=.*##SETUP_PATCH\\((?P<command>.*)\.(?P<variable>.*)\\)', line)
    if not match:
    return line
    print 'Replacing:'+line
    line = match.group('identifier')
    line += ' = '
    data = '(self).distribution.get_command_obj(\''+\
    match.group('command')+'\')'+'.'+\
    match.group('variable')
    line += '\''+eval(data)+'\''
    line += '\n'
    print 'With:' + line
    return line
    Apend this package_ini command to install command:
    class install(_install):
    from distutils.command.install import install as _install
    sub_commands = _install.sub_commands + [
    (package_ini.__name__, None)
    Mention your package.ini in setup():
    setup(..., package_data={'myverycoolpackage':['package.ini']}, data_files='myverycoolpackage','doggie.gif',..)
    Write your package.ini like this:
    __data_dir__ = '../../data' ##SETUP_PATCH(install_data.install_dir)
    Package.ini will get patched properly during install, so if i assume that user specified --data-dir=C:/Program Files/ApplicationData/verycoolpackage, package.ini will be:
    __data_dir__ = 'C:/Program Files/Application Data/verycoolpackage'
    Notice that you can access any property from setup script, so this might be usable for version string or other stuff.
    Also notice that in 'develoment environment' location of data files differs from 'installation environment'. Cute, isn't it?.
    Now you just have to evaluate package ini (propably in myverycoolpackage/__init__.py):
    with open(inipath) as ini:
    for line in ini.readlines():
    exec(line)
    And we're done.

    I've just checked several versions of Dreamweaver in Windows 7. They all have dotted lines showing the tree structure in the Files panel.
    I also checked Dreamweaver CS3 on Mac OS X 10.6, and CS5.5 and CS6 on Mac OS X 10.7. None of the Mac versions have dotted lines. The files are simply indented.
    If you're on a Mac, that's the way it has been for a long time. If you're on Windows, the lines should still be there. There is no special setting in Dreamweaver.

  • Files/Clips from old iDVD image files

    I am an underwater photographer and I have a number of older projects that I created in FCP/iDVD. I have the iDVD image files, but not the original MOV files, as they were huge and were deleted to save space.
    I would like to create a compilation DVD that has all of the old disks combined into one.
    Any way to extract the clips from the image files and drop them into a new project. They are already rendered to the the DVD format.
    Thanks in advance, David

    Frank's reply is correct but a little lacking in detail!
    You will need to re-edit the files in iMovie in order to make it one single project.
    You first need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
    Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
    Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • How to reference a set of Flash-protected f4v files in a manifest when the files are on Cloudfront?

    I have: a self-created AMS 5.0 running on Amazon.
    Using latest OSMF player.
    I'm Using EZDRM for Flash Access protection.
    I have a dynamic bitrate f4m created with the F4F packager. It contains data for three bitrates.
    I know that my S3 bucket and Cloudfront distribution are generally working because I can play a set of non-drm files using a RTMP-style manifest
    I am successfully  issuing the license and playing the videos using that manifest when the files are located on the AMS itself.
    The working call to the manifest is this: http://media.blah.com/vod/BlahBlah/Blah.f4m
    I think the relevant portion of the manifest is this:
                      streamId="Blah-1000"
    url="Blah-1000"
    bitrate="1000"
    bootstrapInfoId="bootstrap4543"
    drmAdditionalHeaderId="drmMetadata8495"
    I think the correct way to approach this it to leave the manifest on AMS and manually change the url in the manifest for each video file
    I've tried changing the url in the manifest to point to the cloudfront location
    http://blahblah.cloudfront.net/cfx/st/mp4:Blah
    But I simply get back: "We are unable to connect to the content you requested."
    Your guidance greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    I created a project (JDeveloper) with local xsd-files and tried to delete and recreate them in the structure pane with references to a version on the application server. After reopening the project I deployed it successfully to the bpel server. The process is working fine, but in the structure pane there is no information about any of the xsds anymore and the payload in the variables there is an exception (problem building schema).
    How does bpel know where to look for the xsd-files and how does the mapping still work?
    This cannot be the way to do it correctly. Do I have a chance to rework an existing project or do I have to rebuild it from scratch in order to have all the references right?
    Thanks for any clue.

  • Why do we need to recompile our project when its property files are change?

    As property files are external files from which we get our data...Why do we need to recompile our proj. every time we make some changes to the files. Is there any solution to it.

    Muktang wrote:
    Thanks All.
    I got the solution.
    Eclipse stores the res folder in its bin folder also..so if i dont change anything and do not compile the project..
    the property files in my bin\res folder does not fget affected by the actual property file..If u change the prop file of bin\res then it will update everythingAnd, as already mentioned, if that is the only one you change, then the next time you recompile your project those changes will be lost. Go into the project properties in Eclipse and reactivate the automatic compilation. Then you need only change the "source" version of the properties file, and Eclipse will update the one in the compiled area automatically, which is the right way to do it. If you want to change both automatically, or change only the one in the compiled area, then don't complain later that your changes either dissappear or become "corrupted".

  • Using iDVD project file after deleting original iMovieHD

    I've been using iMovieHD and iDVD to convert my home movies from miniDV tapes to DVDs. I've been putting two one-hour tapes together into one iMovie and then creating an iDVD project with themes, chapters, etc.
    Each two-hour iMovie file takes up >20 GB. Before I burned my DVD, the iDVD project file took up only a few MB. After I burned the DVD, the file size grew to >4 GB, so I figured (erroneously, it seems) that this new file package contained all of the information needed to keep burning DVDs. Threfore, I deleted the original massive iMovie file and kept only the iDVD project file.
    Now every time I try to load the iDVD file, the program lists all the missing files and, other than my themes and chapter titles, there is nothing left of the original project.
    Am I missing something here? What's taking up all that space (4 GB)? Am I completely screwed? Is the only way to make new copies of my project to copy the DVD that I made?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Jay,
    As John has said, you should have created a Disc Image of your DVD project before deleting the iMovie file. When working in iMovie/iDVD you must not delete ANYTHING that is in the project, not even the iMovie trash can, which often mysteriously fills up with "stuff", until you are sure you are finished editing and then have saved a Disc Image to burn further DVD's from. The files you deleted from iMovie were the reference for the file you were using in iDVD. Without that iMovie file, your iDVD project will only show what was created there, like your theme page.
    Sorry that's bad news. Your options now are re-create your iMovies from your tapes, OR, rip the DVD you have back to your Mac to burn more DVD's.

  • Huge iDVD archived files

    I encoded an iMovie project with iDVD 5. The iMovie DV files are about 7GB, and iDVD can perfectly fit them onto a 4GB DVD. I decided to save the project with the "Archive Project" option with the encoded files. Why does the estimated size to archive the project is over 24GB???

    Alxalx,
    An Archived project (withe encoded files) contains both the encoded and unencoded versions of all your movies and songs, etc.
    So if you have a 7GB movie and the encoded version is 4 GB, you have at least 11GB plus some extra.
    The iMovie DV files are about 7GB
    Is this the combined size of the iMovie files? Or how many do your have?
    If you just want to be able to make copies (but no more edits) you can "Save as Disk Image" This saves the final encoded product only, but cannot be edited/changed and will only be 4GB or smaller.

  • Flash files are not smooth

    Hi,
    I am running DMP 4400G (5.2.3) with DMM server 5.2.3.
    Every thing working fine except the flash files. All the flash files are not smooth. They are playing like fram by fram. I am using flash 10.

    We've run every type of flash on the 4400. We've tried flash 7, flash 10, flash lite, action script 2 and action script 3. For the most part, flash will *not run smoothly* if:
    1. You have very large files, like imported bit map images.
    2. Large sweeping motions or tween animation effects.
    3. Multiple flash objects on a single page.
    4. Video embedded in flash will never play evern remotely reasonably well.
    The best thing to do is:
    1. Keep flash objects small.
    2. Animations should have as few frames as possible, no tween effects, no big sweeping motions, in other words, make transitions small and very quick.
    3. Keep flash objects self contained, that is, don't try to pull in too much content from external sources.
    Like I said, we've tried so many things, but when it comes to flash, the 4400 is rather restrictive.
    Good luck!

  • IDVD loses files

    Since I haven't received any answer to my topic and since there is at least another iDVD6 user having the same problem I am asking the question again.
    After I make a slide show DVD from pictures, burn it and put it away, if later on I try to open it from the computer a window pops up saying "The following files could not be found". The names of the files are something like this:/users/my name/iPhoto library/originals/2007... -> find files. If I say "cancel" iDVD get stuck with the little wheel turning. If I say "find files" since the files missing are not specific I would have to look for thousand of files in order to find the two missing. Nothing has changed in my iPhoto library. I know all original pictures are still there in a dedicated album. Why is this happening? It is a recurrent problem for me.
    Thanks for any advice

    the iM projects shown in the media pane of iDVD can not be erased within iDVD...

    are ways to "knock away the feet" under iMovie - and all unpleasant things can occur e.g. connections lost to material in process.

    _ are it/they connected and working OK too ?

    This happened to me before, I accidently had applied a broadcast safe filter to a color matte that was black....
    I figured it out by duplicating my sequence and deleting items from my timeline 1 by 1 until I was able to export a reference movie.
    Anywho, export again, this time with "self contained" movie selected.

    Actually it is easier than I thought. It is H264 but the wrapper is m4v. You can just change that in the finder to .mov and drop it into iDVD. iMovie will send it to iTunes so just right click on it in iTunes and select reveal in finder and then copy/paste to desktop and change to .mov. Then drag into iDVD. Really easy.
