IDVD project not burning!

Hi!
I've done my project and it goes through the whole process of preparing, mulitplexing etc and says it has finished but doesn't actually burn anything on to the disc! Any suggestions??

i would start all over, delete that iDVD project and then "Share" your iMovie project to Media Browser, at the highest resolution your movie will allow, that is slow. Then open iDVD, find that movie in media browser and pull it into the iDVD screen and try burning again. these things are finnicky and one little error and they dont work.

You're going to give us a lot more information that that.
What version of iDVD do you have?
What happens when you try to burn the iDVD project?
    Any messages or warnings?
What type of content do you have, i.e. movies, photos for slideshows?
What brand of DVD disk are your using?
If you get to the point of starting a burn what speed do you select.

  • My iDvd will not burn a disc...there is an encoding error that comes up after the title screen

Like it says in the title...My iDvd will not burn a disc...there is an encoding error that comes up after the title screen.
Here is the process that I have been doing.
    1. put in a blank disk and with the project already being done, i hit burn (not too hard).
    2. iDvd then starts to encode the title.
    3. After the title has been encoded, the burning stops and a message comes up saying "there was an error during encoding" and when ever I try to burn the same message keeps on coming up.
    I am running version 7.0.4
any help would be extremely helpful

    Try using this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Then you can concentrate on the content if you can't create a disk image of the project.

    Hello-
I just upgraded to maverick and now iDVD will not burn a DVD - says it does not have a compatible superdrive. It was working fine until I upgraded. How can I burn a nice DVD now?

Suggestion only. Before launching, did you also check for updates via apple's software updater?

  • Still having issues with iDVD 5  not burning playlist

I have tried many things as suggested before, including sending to Garageband,
making a new playlist etc. The slideshow always plays fine in iDVD, but when you burn it to DVD it only plays one song and stops. I have a family project that I would like to burn and make copies of. Also now having input/output error when trying to copy DVD's. Please help, much time wasted...

You're in the iDVD 6 Discussion group... You should post in the iDVD 5 Discussion group.
    However:
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...

    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/image_to_diskstone.html
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his latest book:
iMovie HD & iDVD 6: The Missing Manual
Quoting David: "Cheaper brands don't use the same amount of organic dyes and are more likely to suffer premature deaths."

  • IDVD will not burn either disk or image

I know lots of people have been having similar problems, but I've trawled through a dozen pages of posts and can't find one that matches my experience.
I'm using iDVD and iMovie (both 6.0.3). I'm trying to create a DVD from an iMovie 67 minutes long. I've set iDVD to "Best quality" rather than "Best performance" and I've successfully created DVDs more than an hour long before.
This one goes through the encoding just fine, but gets stuck about 3/4 way through the 'burn'. I've tried both burning direct to DVD and creating a disk image. Both get stuck at exactly the same place. I dumped a heap of stuff off my hard drive to create 21GB of free space. All that happened was it got to the point where it gets stuck a lot quicker.
I've tried leaving it overnight and it makes no detectable progress.
The last time I successfully burned a DVD was around September/October 2006, and it was using iDVD 6. My copy of iDVD 6 indicates it was updated in November 2006, so I this would be the first time I've used it since then.
I've seen a lot of posts about problems with audio encoding, but this movie only has 4 mins of iTunes audio at the end - the rest is just movie soundtrack. Anyway, it seems to get past all the encoding and rendering without problems - it's just the burn stage that won't happen.
This is driving me nuts. The footage is of my brother and family's visit to us in Australia at Christmas/New Year and it's breaking my heart that I can't send them the DVD.
    Please help!!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1.33 GHz, 1.25 RAM

Left this almost two months ago about to do a disk repair and defrag.
Disk repair revealed errors in volume information, successfully repaired.
Defrag was looking like taking more than a week, so deferred it until my partner could run it from his Mac mini (more memory, faster processor).
    Several weeks later...
Finally tried the defrag again - still looking like taking several days.
Bright idea - copy entire disk to backup drive, reformat internal hard drive and copy back again. Worked! Beautifully unfragmented disk.
Tried burning the iDVD movie again. Same problem as before - stopped 3/4 of the way through the burn (to image, not disk). OK so fragmentation was not the problem.
    Final solution?
Copied the iDVD project and associated iMovie to external hard drive and burned disk image on my partner's machine. Worked fine. Difference? More memory (2GB vs 1.25GB) and slightly faster processor.
I would have thought 1.25 GB RAM was plenty (especially as I only had 512MB last time I burned a DVD), but it appears not. Next time I do a home DVD I intend to use the simplest possible theme - no video clips, minimal graphics, as I suspect some of the themes consume more resources than they should. I know I tried another one before the one I eventually used and couldn't get it to render at all.
Thanks very much for the support, Bengt. I'm pleased to say that the DVDs went off to my family in England last week, and I'm sure they'll enjoy watching them.

  • IDVD will not burn disc after QT update

IDVd used to work just fine. I did software update and updated Quicktime to version 7. I found that my Quicktime Pro key for QT 6 would not work with QT 7. I called Apple support and they told me how to revert back to QT 6. I followed their steps and successfully have QT Pro 6 back, but not my iDVD projects will not burn. It gets to stage 4 multiplex and burn and spins for hours. When I hit cancel, the disc ejects and is unburnt.
I have followed Apples steps to solve a no burn when you upgrade to iDVD 4.0.1 (remove encoded assets) and this does not fix the problem.

    Hi Dennis
There is ways to delete all of QT and then make a clean install but the
easiest way is to download a back to QT 6.5.2 file from Apple support
    and downloads.
I've done this and keep it till I get an upgrade that takes away the old
files before installing the new ones.

  • Idvd will not burn disks

All of a sudden my work computer and my home computer will not burn disks in IDVD?

Are you getting any messages or warnings when you try?  What systems are you running on each and what version of iDVD?  Is it the same project that you tried to burn on each Mac?  What brand and type of disk are you using?  What burn speed did you try?

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

  • I give up!!!  iDVD will not burn a disk

I will try to give as much information as I can.  I have been struggling with iDVD for a couple weeks.  It will not burn a disk that has a complete menu.  Let me explain.  I've been  testing it to see if it would burn a disk at various stages of development.  It will burn a disk if I just import the video to iDVD with no menu.  It will burn a disk with partial menu and chapters.  But it will not burn a disk if I have an entire menu, with all the chapter markers, drop zones filled and music.
    Help, please.
    Thank you!!

    Hi
Yes - info - but not really the one I would need. There are so much that can go wrong and in different layers (steps of progress)
    A. First - What You feed iDVD - QuickTime-player can open and play so many more VIDEO-CODECs than iDVD ever can use (it is very picky)
    B. There is the notorious - iDVD BUG - that set's of by going back to Video-Editing program (iMovie, FinalCut or whatever) - then returning to the iDVD project. iDVD will notice but non of the alternatives works - I create a brand new iDVD project - only safe way for me - AND THEN NO RETURN AT ALL !
    C. What other material is used - for menus as Music, Photos and small Video sequences
    D. What Theme was used
BTW - Creating a DVD without a Menu - You must be the only one I've ever heard that was able to do this - It is an often discussed topic here.
    E. And if Your project now runs OK in iDVD - SAVE AS A DISKIMAGE (File menu down to bottom topic)
    F. Does this .img file run OK (Simulated DVD)
    G. Burn it with Disk Util tool.
    H. On What BRAND and Type of DVD ? I only use Verbatim DVD-R (SL-Single Layer)
You see - that it is this kind of info that helps me to make, may be good Guessing's.

  • IDVD project not playing

Using my main iMac computer and iDVD software, I have just completed my fifth attempt to make an DVD project. I am unable to have a disc that plays... error message says that I'm inserting a 'blank disc'.. but if you look closely, one can see the project has been burned onto the DVD disc.
I've used  13 pieces of .mov footage (Project is a short documentary, with 12 x  individual stories -- all 13 pieces of .mov footage were compressed with FCP7, taken from the full documentary); one .jpg pic as a drop-in on the main menu; and I used the Sunflower template with chapters.  This project works when I use the Preview feature.
I finished the project, and burned a copy (and I repeated this five times, as I couldn't get the disc to work (checking the Preferences, and Project Info for settings: burn speed 1x, with High Quality encoding - not, Professional quality).
I put this copy into my MacBook Pro, but the disc won't read - says it s a blank disc. I've repeated this several times, but not had any luck yet, to make a playable DVD (and I need it to play on both Mac and PC computers).
I"ve even burned this as a Disc Image, and opened with VLC, and the file plays...... but, now what...?
I cannot get a disc that plays, even in my Macbook Pro.  I would be grateful for your advice.

    Hi
Sorry to say - I'm not clever enough to follow Your steps.
BUT - I made a note on how I get movies from FinalCut (Pro) to iDVD and onto a DVD.
May be it can help You.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1) - never any faster as this use to give BAD DVDs
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • Idvd 08  shuts down after building, idvd will not burn a dvd

Dvd studio pro burns fine, Burning a DVD data disk works fine. Burning a project in Idvd 08 will not burn anything. It simply quits before finishing and spits out an empty dvd disk. I have a imac g5 power pc 2.1 ghz, 500gb hd, 2.5 gb ram and I am running idvd 08 version 7.0. I have tried reinstalling idvd and have even repaired permissions. What do I do? What could it be?

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • *Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb*
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides. Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets

  • IDVD "Themes" not burning.

Recently upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion and have found that when producing a movie through iDVD the "themes" are not burning correctly although the bulk of the movie is fine.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so do you have a solution?

Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
Then follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.

  • I had completed my iDVD project and burned a disc. It worked great! Then someone messed with the project and put a red frame around the opening screen. Now when I burn the project, it no longer has the opening frame. How can I fix?

I had completed my iDVD project, a Wedding Slideshow with pictures and music, and burned it on a disc. It worked great! Then someone messed with the original project on my computer and clicked around and put a red frame around the opening screen that has the Wedding theme with music. Now when I burn the project to make more DVDs, it burns but no longer has the opening frame. It immediately opens to the iMovie slideshow. How can I fix so I can burn the entire project with opening frames?

As Bengt suggested make a disk image of the successfully burned DVD using Disk Utility. Then you can burn copies any time you need one.
In the future once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
You can then burn it to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • IDVD will not burn anything!

Any movie I try to Burn won't. iDVD says it’s over 4 gig when the movie file is only 700 MB with no extra buttons, music, vidoes or anything else! I don't know what happened to it! It used to work. What do I do?

    Hi
iDVD do not Care about Gbs or Mbs - ONLY Time (Movie + Menu = Duration)
I have movies on 500Mb that do not fit and Movies on 50Gb that fit's nicely. Duration is the only thing that counts.
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
You do not use iMovie !
OK - Where did Your movie originate and How did You go from this (in what codec) to iDVD ?
