IDVD Quitting During/After Initial Burning

I'm am having random problems burning projects. I just successfully burned a project that had only 1 menu and 1 QT movie w/o chapters (20 minutes long) but iDVD quit immediately after. A real pain as i need to make multiple copies and now have to wait for asset encoding again.
I also have been having trouble burning other projects that have 2-3 menus, a short QT movie in the menu and a 40 minute QT movie with chapters as the main movie. These projects keep quitting during the burn and nothing is getting on the dvd.
Any ideas? Thanks.
10.4.3
iDVD 4.0.1
50 GB free space
iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Ok, so now i've tried quitting all other programs and rebooting before burning a dvd. iDVD is still quitting after successfully burning a project. I need to burn more than one disk though and don't want to wait for the encoding again.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how to fix this or any other options? Thanks.

  • Idvd quitting during encoding

I recently upgraded to Leopard and have had problems burning through idvd ever since. Idvd keeps quitting during the processing movie stage. I have tried repairing permissions and deleting the preference file with no success and have ensured I have 25 gb of free space. Any further suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated as I have run out of ideas now and getting very frustrated.

    Questions:
    Did you repair permissions yet?
are all assets for iDvd located on the startup volume (as opposed to an ext HD)?
Are you using an ext. FW / USB Hard Drive on your mac by any chance? If so eject and disconnect it and try again.

  • IDVD crashes right after clicking "BURN" button!!!

    Hello,
hope anyone could help me with my urgent problem!
Just bought a new iBook G4 14.1" about a week ago. I've created a project in iMovie. I've added songs cut the seens and so on.......
    THE PROBLEM:
after exporting to iDVD everything works fine. I've creted a menu scenes,... evrything (took a lot of time).
Right, when I click the "BURN " button the whole thing(iDVD) crashes and doesnt even produce an error report, nothing. Just a message saying that iDVD has quit and so on...
VEry desprate and hope someone could have a suggestion.
The project is about 1:28 (20GB) in iMOvie and about 7GB in iDVD. i have 20GB of free space on my startup disk, hopefully!
    Thanks again for any suggestions!

    1st troubleshooting step with iDVD:
Delete the iDVD preference (plist) file (com.apple.iDVD.plist)
Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utiltiy in Applications>Utilities
    Then try again....
1:28 (20GB) in iMOvie and about 7GB in iDVD
Are you trying to burn this on a double layer or single layer DVD? Go to the project info window and set it correctly.

  • IDVD ejects during multiplexing and burning

    Hi folks,
I've used iDVD previously (several times) to create DVDs of movies I've created in FCE4. Today, the program goes so far, then ejects the disk during the "multiplexing and burning" / "writing lead-in" portion. When I check, there's nothing on the disk. Anyone every experience this? And, if you know, please advise as to how I might fix the problem.
Thanks very much for your expertise.

    Multiplexing Error
    Hi
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.
Now my long long list on Multiplex Error

Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
    • Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
    • No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
    • No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
    2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
    3. Safe re-boot
    4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
    SDMacuser adds to this
    • On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
    5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
    6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
    7. Trash iDVD pref. file
    8. Make a new iDVD project
    9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
    10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

  • IDVD quits responding right before Burn

    Hello,
I made a slideshow in iPhoto, transferred it iDVD where I edited a theme. All went well except while working on the theme the Auto Encoding seemed like it stalled, so I went ahead a started the sequence to burn my project onto a DVD-R. While it was performing the sequence to burn, I noticed my available RAM slowly being used up. Just before the 'Burn' starts, my available RAM is down to 10% and I get a iDVD not responding in Activity Monitor. I Quit Process and I started all over, twice. I finally got it on the 3rd try, after about 4hrs from start to finish. I have iLife '05 BTW.
Do I need more RAM to successfully Burn my slideshow project without having to Force Quit iDVD?
    Thanks.

    Hi
Pure hands on knowledg. When stopping to Panic halt and letting it go. It
said "pling" several hours later and there it was a new working DVD disk.
After paic breaks I think it is important to do some hard disk repair like:
    - repair permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    - repair hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool) You need to start from CD or hd.
I use to run DiskWarrior™ and Tech-tools™ now and then.
The amount of free space on the internal drive is essential. I think > 25Gb.
Others says less but anything to hinder the Mac from virtual memory management.
That can result in stupid processing times like several days.

  • IDvd freezes during 2nd -3rd burn

When burning DVDs with IDVD the first dvd burns ok
but on the 2nd -3rd try the process freezes up. The Dvd is ejected but not completely burned. I have to force quit and start the entire process over- takes hour+
The problem started after upgrading to iLife 06. Can this be apart of the issue?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hello Tony,
glad you got it up and working.
I'm surpised since the superdrive is a new one, barely 3 months old
I have never had this problem, but I don't think it depends on the age of the burner or is an indication of a malfunction .... you're just pushing the burner a bit to hard.
Should I upgrade to 10.4.4? If so, what is the name of the upgrade package?
I would recommend upgrading to Tiger (OS X 10.4). You'll have to buy the new OS, then get the updates (if necessary). I believe the most recent is 10.4.7.
I will try the disc image process...
That is definitely the way to work in iDVD. Not only does it minmize burn errors, but it also produces a file that can be stored on your HDD for future burns.
    hope this helps

  • IDVD Quits during stage 2

    Help!!
I recently ran into this problem. I have had many successes burning slide shows with iDVD in the past. Believe it or not, I am still using iDVD 2.1. (that probably is my problem) All used to work just fine. The only thing I could think of causing the problem is, upgrading to Tiger. All I am trying to burn is a slide show of pictures. (in stage 2 it hangs up with 16 minutes left) I let it go all night with no success. I did purchase iLife 06, but I have yet to install. I really, would like to be sure that it's not the project first before I upgrade the application. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or answers.'
    Thanks in advance
    G4 933mhz   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

My standard list of things to do first for these weird sort of problems, but I also tend to run these before I go to burn an iDVD project just to be safe. Keep in mind this list represents the programs I tend to use. I am running Panther (10.3.9) so Tiger users might want to check the below list for compatibility. There are several alternate programs that do the same things with some combining the functions of some of the ones below. So everyone has their favorites, but here are mine...
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system, especially any external drives that you use for iMovie and iDVD projects.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
Reboot your Mac (after running Cache Out X you are given the option to restart the machine).
If you still can not get it to run correctly, next thing to try is to throw out the iDVD preference file (don't forget to change back those preferences you want different from the defaults next time you run it). If it still doesn't work, then I would suggest you reinstall iDVD.

  • IDVD quitting when trying to burn

anyone else having this problem after installing 10.5 ??
I had the blue screen problem, two trips to the "genius" bar and still having problems.

Thanks for responding so quickly and happy newyear.
My powersettings are already set to never save energi when on external power.
And my Mac is up-to-date. Like I said, I have read other threads where you also give advice, but it ends with no solution and clue if the bug has been fixed or if it's gonna be.
Have also tried to wait for my video to be encoded before starting the whole burn process and still same problem. It just freezes after it has made the part 1(the menu part) of 2 and then it goes cold.
Have to say that my video is about 100 min long but that should not be the problem. Have plenty of space on my HD.

  • IDVD "Quit Unexpectedly" as "DVD Capacity" approaches 1 GB?

I'm having the age old "Quit Unexpectedly" problem, and it seems to occur as my DVD Capacity as read in the "status" tab approaches 1GB (of 4.1) GB.
My project with 4 movies and the projector project totals 0.6 GB and burns fine every time. If I add another movie that brings the total up to 1.2GB, that's when the quitting thing occurs. (sometimes during background encoding, or sometimes that finishes OK and iDVD quits during the very beginning of stage 4)
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
I'm running iDVD 4.0.1 on OS 10.3.9 with at least 30gig left on my boot drive at all times. The movies all have been exported from FCP in DV format.

    Hello Mark,
    I'm running iDVD 4.0.1 on OS 10.3.9
Your specs at the bottom say OS X 10.4.2. Which one is it? If you run Tiger, you probably have QT 7 which might be a cause for the problem (shooting in the dark here)
    Have you tried:
    • Trashing preferences (com.apple.iDVD.plist) and empty trash
    • Repairing Disk Permissions using Disk Utility
    • Clearing Cache Files (Tools: CacheOutX, Onyx)
Also: have you tried creating a disk image? Disk Image creation can be enabled in iDVD 4 through a hack (HPfurz). Find some more info here:

  • IDVD Quits (oh no, not another one)

    Hello all,
about 6 months ago I tried iMovie and iDVD and had nothing but problems, mainly down to iMovie's inability to accept imported movie footage using the 'make clips' function (it just corrupted the original footage). Recently, I had another go and instead opted for 'import footage in one big clip'. That worked!
So great, I made a short 28 minute film and popped into iDVD for burning. And then, iDVD swallowed a few disks, then crashed through processing, then wouldn't load and blah blah blah.
Does anyone happen to know how to get iDVD 5 to actually write a DVD-R without 'unexpectedly' quitting (during rendering, or burning, or during anything at all).
Long time Mac user in another frustrated state ...

    Hi N.H.H.
    Just some thoughts.
    one:
Mac OS and iDVD and QT works as a team and has to be matched right.
If X.3.x works on a dual-core G5 is out of my knowledg (probabyl not)
    OS X.3.9 + iDVD 5.0.1 + QT 6.5.2 = stable working environment (if possibly)
    OS X.4.8 + iDVD 6.0.3 + QT 7.1.3 = also OK
    OS X.4.3 + iDVD 5.0.x and QT ???? = don't know
    two:
The most common problem maker is when trying to make DVD disks with
to little free memory on the internal (booth) hard disk. > 25Gb free is what
I recommend. Mac OS needs 5 - 10 Gb to work (UNIX needs it) and then
iDVD + QT needs at least 2 X 5Gb to calculate and store the mpeg2 code
    to the DVD disk
    three:
Choise of DVD disks: I use Verbatim DVD-R and burn at an as slow speed
    as possibly.

  • IDVD ejects disk during multiplexing and burning

Having burnt many DVDs previously, I have suddenly started struggling.
Having edited in FCE HD v3.5.1, I export to Quicktime and then build the dvd as normal in iDVD.
The project has no errors and then I burn it using Verbatim 16x certified 4.7GB/120 min Advanced AZO+ DVD-R disks.
During Multiplexing and burning (with between 1 and 3 mins left, it ejects the disk saying saying done but nothing is burnt.
To try to remedy this, I have set the burn speed to both 2x and 1x. I have also turned the computer off, removed all cables and battery, held down the power button for 10secs then rebuilt and retried. Still nothing.
I saved a disk image but I don't know how to then make that into a burnt dvd. Any advice on that would be appreciated but moreover, I'm sure I shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops to burn a dvd - Mac's should just work shouldn't they.....?!

Here's even more of an update, with no joy....
to refresh, I have a macbook pro 15" - the older one with the silver keys.
I make 3 min movies in FCE then export using quick time conversion and try to burn with iDVD.
The problem: I can burn data CDs but i can't burn a DVD anymore. This seemed to start after the update to 10.5.7. At that point I tried to fix it with no joy so due to deadlines, used another machine! Now a few months later, i come back to it and still no joy.
    I have reset the PRAM
    I have reset the CMR
I have upgraded to Snow Leopard
I have sprayed compressed air into the drive
I have reduced the burn speed to 1x
But still I can't burn a dvd. When iDVD goes through the stages, everything is OK until it gets to multiplexing and burning, it says it is 'writing lead in' and has 1 min left (or 2 mins when burning at 1x). Then the blue status line suddenly goes all along and the machine spits the dvd out saying done. (although iDVD does not revert to beginning of the process, it kind of freezes).
idvd version 7.04 if I hadn't said before.
    Please help, I'm despairing....

  • IDVD quits on burn

I am having trouble with iDVD 5 quitting after encoding but before actual burn. It quits completeley with no error message. I tried making a disk image, same thing happens. I deleted the plist to no avail. I am stumped, I have searched the forum and can find no solution. The superdrive will play DVDs and burn data and music with no problems. I believe it has to be in the iDVD program. I have burned several dvds in the past. Any help would be appreciated.

I encoded to DV instead of mov...
DV is a SPECIFIC file type with a SPECIFIC CODEC. - the iApps are designed for DV.
.mov is just a container and several different CODECs can be used for the data - I would expect QT .mov files to work, but...
BTW, the .mov wasn't a REFERENCE file was it? If it was a reference file and you moved or deleted any of the components used in that movie, the reference .mov would be 'broken'.
