IDVD randomly gives me a "Widescreen Preview"

I've created a project in FCE in standard format. I import it to iDVD into a Standard format project. But my preview and my DVDs are widescreen. It doesn't always do it. It seems random. Is it a bug? Or something I can adjust somewhere?
Also, I created a widescreen project in FCE and imported it to iDVD in a widescreen project. But it only shows as standard view. What the ****?!

Hi Dylan
Welcome to apple discussions. Did you follow these steps?
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1611
You can open a clip in QT Player, hit Cmd J, and adjust the playback size. Should play fine but if not then try another approach like:

Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck.

  • When I try to use iDVD to create a disk of my 4:3 aspect movie, the themes show a widescreen preview. I want the aspect to remain 4:3! Help please.

When I try to use iDVD to create a disk of my 4:3 aspect Quicktime movie (made on Final Cut Pro), the iDVD seems to change its aspect to 16:9, because in the corner of the theme screen, I see "Widescreen preview". Does this mean that if I complete and save my project and burn it to disk that the aspect will also be 16:9? I do not want the circles to look like ovals!

    BTW
Did You turn on TV-Safe area. Pict in Swedish but I guess that You figure it out.
    to be like this
I do - and keep this ON till Save as a DiskImage is done. (I always do one first to see that all is right - before burning the DVD - it saves so many)

  • Idvd plays some movie clips in a widescreen preview

I can't figure out how to keep some clips from going into widescreen preview. They are marked to play in 4:3 mode. Of the 15 clips four play in widescreen preview in the preview mode. Help!

Whenever this happens to me it's usually because I didn't make the proper adjustment on my TV/LCD so it plays back in 4:3 as opposed to WS/ 16:9. But if that's not the case in your own situation then try the second download in the following link and feel free to post back:

  • Why did our standard format Quicktime movie switch to widescreen preview in iDVD?

We created wedding videos on Final Cut Express 2 and converted them to Quicktime movies. When you play the videos in Quicktime, they show up in standard format (not widescreen).  When we put the movies into iDVD 7.1.2, one of the movies shows up as widescreen and the other stays in standard format.  We want them in standard format (which is how they were shot).
    Any suggestions?

    Hi
When You make a brand new iDVD project - Select DV - not Widescreen-DV
In iDVD top menu Project/Project info - Here too - You may be must select 4x3 size.
And how You go from FinalCut to iDVD matters - My notes on this.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used (matters)
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
    Also do when problems occures
    • Trash iDVD pref. file and
    • run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • 4:3 aspect woes.  Curse that "widescreen preview"!!

I searched this subject before posting and couldn't find an answer. I created a slideshow -- with NO audio -- using "Photo-to-Movie" in 4:3. I exported it to iDVD using the program's settings, choosing 4:3 when prompted in iDVD. Even chose a really old theme, as all the newer formats want widescreen (yes, I know I can choose 4:3, and I have). Everything goes fine until I preview, then my stretched out photos show up with the dreaded green "widescreen preview". The discs burn this way as well. Read all the threads here which address this problem with FC and FCE, which I have used in the past, but not this time. Doubt it is a corrupt audio segment, as again, there is no audio to this project; it is supposed to play silently at a graduation ceremony in two days. Have resigned myself to going back into PTM and re-doing all the key frames, etc in widescreen format. What a huge waste of time. Everything on my Mac is up to date, except the PTM is an older version. The movie it exported (.mov format) plays fine everywhere else except for when I bring it into iDVD. Why why why won't it preview and burn in standard 4:3 format?

    Hi there.
I have encountered the same problem lately, and downloaded the Inverse Amorphicizer, as suggested. It downloaded, but there are no instructions as to how to use it. This discussion thread suggests that it opens in QuickTime. It doesn't do that for me. It has its own menu bar (with nothing but "Amorphicizer" on it. The creator's instructions were to "drop your quicktime move onto the Amorphicizer". I do not understand this. I try to drag the QT movie file onto the icon for the Amorphicizer, but nothing happens. I guess I don't understand how to use this download.

  • Widescreen preview mode, how to disable?

    hello everyone
i already have a project that i made using the templates in idvd 08,my project was shot in 16x9 anamorphic and then i put it on a 4x3 sequence so it will letterbox on normal 4x3 televisions, when i hit the preview button and played my footage it showed my project was squashed, and below was a green caption 'widescreen preview'.
anyone know how to disable this?because i have done lots of projects in this same workflow(16x9 to 4x3 sequence) but showed to be fine when i preview it on idvd (a letterboxed footage in a 4x3 aspect). this is the first time i encountered this and i cant seem to find how to disable the 'widescreen preview'
the aspect ratio of my dvd template is 4x3
i hope someone could help me, thank you very much

Found a post in another forum from JTR210, it worked for me...
    Quoting...
I found a stupid workaround where you download a program called Inverse-Anamorphicizer
    http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
You drop the 4:3 movie you are using into Inverse-Anamorphicizer and it creates a reference movie that you drag into iDVD. After using this process the DVD burned fine and I tested it on 3 different machines to confirm that everything was at a 4:3 ratio.
The menu, movies and slideshow of the DVD were all coming up widescreen but everything works like it should now. Does anyone know a better method than this or is quicktime and iDVD just screwed up until they update it?
    End Quote...
    Hope this helps.

  • Widescreen Preview

I have a 4:3 aspect ratio project from Final Cut Pro 6.5... I've been exporting as a Quicktime movie for years from FCP......So I know how to do it and have done it 100's of times.
Today - I went to burn it to IDVD and the movie "previews" in widescreen even though it is not a widescreen template or movie. It says "Widescreen Preview" in green at bottom right of screen during preview.
In Quicktime - the movie plays as it should 4:3.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help - it turns out that I opened the .mov in quicktime and resaved it. That seemed to take away the "wide screen" scenario. My guess is the my FCP project had a combo of Wide Screen and Standard Screen video in it. Even though I exported the whole project as a standard screen movie - IDVD picked up on the widescreen stuff. Anyway - that's how I solved the problem.

  • "Widescreen Preview" Mysteriously Appeared On 2 Of The 9 Videos.

I have just made 9 short slideshow videos in Final Cut Express, exported them to QuickTime Movie (NOT self-contained) and dragged them into a 4:3 PAL iDVD project.
When burned to DVD and played on my 16:9 HDTV, 2 of the videos were stretched even though the TV was set to 4:3.
On playing the project in iDVD, both the dodgy videos are stretched and have the statement "Widescreen Preview" in green.
All the videos were dealt with identically.
Can anyone suggest how this has happened?
Normally I preview in iDVD before burning but the process is so routine that I didn't on this occasion!

I too have just begun having this prob but from Final Cut Pro. Had 9 4:3 clips dragged to iDVD...1st 8 played well in testing but 9th showed "widescreen preview". All 9 were produced in the same doc with 9 diff 4:3 sequences. I had to go back and rebuild the entire sequence a clip at a time until i found if a clip was corrupt. It ended up the music track (wedding video) was the last element i added and that made it "widescreen preview". To bring the audio into FCP originally, I dragged from the CD to copy it to the hard drive...then imported into music folder in FCP. So, I dumped that music file and imported the file from the CD into iTunes. I duplicated that mp3 file and then imported it into the FCP music folder and it worked!
Thought I had solved the prob only to find in checking an older iDVD project another "widescreen preview"!!!
I went ahead and burnt the DVD when it showed "widescreen" and sure enough, it cropped the edges of the video on a 4:3 screen. Even when I played it on a 16:9 screen it spread out to conform to screen but still had edges cropped.
    ANYONE HELP!!

  • IDVD virgin needs help! Widescreen ration aspect problems

    Hi,
I created QT movies from FCPx all as widescreen, when I play the QT movies they are widescreen but then when I create a iDVD, the ration changes to standard (even though it is set in iDVD to wide). When I am iDVD and look at the preview there is gray around the edges and it looks standard ration. What have I done wrong??  I found this advice:
f a gray border appears in the iDVD windo
When you drag the iDVD window to make it larger, the menu in the iDVD window always maintains the correct aspect ratio of your project (4:3 for standard video and 16:9 for widescreen). The extra space around your menu appears as a gray border.
To return the iDVD window to normal size:
    Choose Window > Actual Size.
You can also drag the window, reducing its size until the gray borders disappear.
But I cannot work out how to do this, I have clicked on Actual size etc but nothing seems to change.... I'm so crap at this, I really need help! thanks!

With the QT files I made straight from FCPx it says, 195.8mb 720 x 576. Then I used 'prism' and converted all the chapters and now they say 11.3mb 1024 x 576. I put them back into iDVD and it solved the widescreen problem. When I view the converted files in iDVD now they are widescreen and work. HOWEVER, I seem to have a new problem! Now there are 2 things that happen.
    1. Everything is widescreen but when I click on the chapters to view the video's, it automatically stops being full screen and goes down to a smaller screen and then you need to click 'full screen' for it to go back, this only happens on a few of them.
    2. Some parts of the DVD don't work, the footage goes all funny like ghosts and it jumps around and doesn't play nicely, then all of a sudden it works for a bit, then back to not working.
I tried using 2 different themes and the same thing happened. Any thoughts?

  • Widescreen preview issues

I am not able to burn my movie in 4.3 even though all settings set at this. I have taken on board all suggestions re audio AIFF code and made short samples of movie and gone through the iDVD process, dropping into frame , choosing theme etc. All these samples came out positive standard preview. So I ran the complete movie again but ended up with the awful distorted 16.9 ( not a good look on TV!) Yes I have been able to render DVDs in the past this is a new problem for me and I have spent days on it and life's too short for all this. Anyone got any ideas??

Thank you for your suggestion. I will try what you said. For the record the TV aspect and DVD player are both set at 4.3. What I am experiencing is a problem with the iDVD preview. If it presents as "WIDESCREEN PREVIEW" then when I burn it comes out at 16.9. This happens even when all settings and preferences are 4.3. So I painstakingly took segments out of my movie slideshow ( made in Photo to Movie ) and sent to iDVD, as this process is shorter than sending the whole movie...2 to 3 hrs. Each section included an audio track which I ran at AIFF and AAC just to be sure. All the segments converted to a 4.3 preview, there was only one that didn't so i changed the audio to AAC and it was fine. So I thought good that was the problem and made the movie slideshow complete once more, but it still previewed as widescreen. I have been using P2M for months now with no problems up to now , although i must admit did have several issues when using iPhoto slideshow, not good at all! Thats why I purchased the P2M software. Sorry to ramble on but I feel at a complete loss with all this.
Just one thing, will this process you gave me enable me to eventually burn a DVD to view at 4.3 aspect on the TV? Thanks again for your time.

  • IDVD will not burn DVD or preview

I made a DVD in IDVD and burned a DVD last week. I went back into IDVD to replace some photos and movies and when I tried to burn another DVD, the wheel spins and the progress screen comes up but does not progress or burn. I tried different DVDs but same result.
When I am in IDVD, I am also unable to preview the DVD project. I can open up the individual folders and see the photos & movies but when I go to preview it, nothing happens. Is the problem with IDVD? I have 5.01.

    Welcome to the iDVD forum....
    Try these steps first:
delete the iDVD plist file "com.apple.iDVD.plist"
repair disk permissions with disk utility
make sure you have 15-20GB of free space on your startup drive
    try again....

  • TS2634 While using my Ipod with a Sony sound dock, it randomly gives me an error message of "incompatibility."  Any ideas?

While using my Ipod Touch with a Sony Sound dock, it randomly gives me an error message - "incompatible."  It honestly worked perfectly for an hour, then suddenly stopped being compatible?  Any ideas out there? I have:
    started, restarted.
    Plugged, unplugged.
Tried dock with a different ipod- worked fine.
    Help!

It's a Touch, not a phone, so not sure how to answer if it's a 4G... sorry:)
Inspection doesn't yield anything obvious;  I've tried a soft toothbrush and air duster spray, to no avail...
The Ipod touch does work on another device;  I'm still trying to figure out why it worked for several hours this morning, then get the message that "this device is not supported by this Ipod."   Wierd.

  • IDVD won't trigger anamorphic widescreen flag

After I edit in FCEHD and export to quicktime and then put that quicktime in IDVD it doesn't put it back in anamorphic widescreen... is there anyway to fix this?

OK... I went into my Pro apps and took notes. This is what works for me (in iDVD 5.0.1). I tested on a short 20 second video clip.
While in Final Cut Pro (5): Export/Using Compressor...
In Compressor Preview window, select file in pop-up on upper-left side of window.
    Click on the Batch window.
Click on Setting button and choose Advanced Format Conversions, then DV NTSC Anamorphic.
In Inspector: Click on Encoder button. Click on Video: Settings button and choose DV/DVCPRO-NTSC from pop-up. In Compressor section, Select Quality-Best, Scan Mode-Interlaced, Aspect Ratio-16:9, click OK. If you want to save this as a Custom setting (you should) click Save As... and give it a name like "Widescreen." It will show up at the bottom of the Setting pop-up in the Batch window next time you need it.
Back to the Batch window. From Setting, select your Custom setting. Then select Destination. Then click Submit.
Batch Monitor opens and shows progress. Double-click the file created in your destination location. Mine will show 720x405.
Simple, eh? I did that without consulting a manual.
I hope it works for others!!!

  • IDVD Randomly Quitting during burn?

Hullo! Posting here cause I've been quite unsuccessful in burning two dvds of mine.
I have about 25 episodes in .avi format that seem to work in preview, work in quicktime/VLC ect.
But halfway through the burn process iDVD just randomly quits on me, doesn't say why but just comes up with a " A disk has been inserted what do you want to do ". Why this happens I don't know, because the disk has been in there through the burn process the whole time
Anyway just looking for some feedback as to whats going wrong. Also I converted it to DVD format through VisualHub but iDVD doesn't recognize that either, and I tried repairing some disk permissions or whatnot to see if that would help.

    Welcome to iDVD Discussions.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/18.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/image_to_diskstone.html
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

Do you mean you created an iDVD project, an iDVD project archieve, a disk image, or burned a DVD using your PowerMac?
Really, the ONLY way to move an iDVD project from one computer to another is via the iDVD archieve project method. Both computers should have the same version of iDVD. The reason? Only the iDVD project archive contains all the 'raw' elements that went into, and are necessary to recreate, the project.
