IDVD Randomly Quitting during burn?

Hullo! Posting here cause I've been quite unsuccessful in burning two dvds of mine.
I have about 25 episodes in .avi format that seem to work in preview, work in quicktime/VLC ect.
But halfway through the burn process iDVD just randomly quits on me, doesn't say why but just comes up with a " A disk has been inserted what do you want to do ". Why this happens I don't know, because the disk has been in there through the burn process the whole time
Anyway just looking for some feedback as to whats going wrong. Also I converted it to DVD format through VisualHub but iDVD doesn't recognize that either, and I tried repairing some disk permissions or whatnot to see if that would help.

Welcome to iDVD Discussions.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/18.html
http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/image_to_diskstone.html
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • How to make movie in iDVD without themes.  iDVD app quitting during burning

I am trying to make movie without themes and still having problems. I have tried using the map view in themes, dragging movie into the first box on left, looping it - but am seeing a yellow error sign in the theme box. Don't know why this is. Have tried to burn movie anyway but iDVD app quits halfway thru. Today I tried just simply going to iDVD >file>onestep DVD from movie>select movie and inserting disc. This seems to be the simple solution I have been looking for to burn a movie without themes but iDVD still quit on me halfway thru burning just now. Is this a space problem? Disc problem? help...

OK F Shippey - Using this computer for anything other than email is pretty new to me. I have just recently began using imovie and idvd. I have burned one idvd and working on a second. While making the movie I was constantly having to delete old footage to make room for space. In other words I don't know much about space and usage. I know that in my new imovie project it says that i have 7.53 Gb available. I know i have a Lacie external with one DVD on it. So what do i need to know about space on a hard drive while using imovie? How do you monitor how much hard drive space you have while working on projects like this? Do I find this info in About This Mac? Sorry for so many dumb questions. Clearly I don't know what I am doing. Thanks for your reply.

  • IDVD Force Quit when Burning

    Hi,
I have Made a Movie with iMovie and it contains clips which I have made with my built in iSight Camera. Then I have added Sound effects from the iMovie Media Pane. I have then Shared the Movie to iDVD and created a Menu. When I want to burn the DVD Project to a DVD I have the following problem: When it is Processing the Movie it stops while it is "encoding audio" of my movie. It then does not create the DVD anymore and I have to Force Quit iDVD. I have tried again 3 times but it still doesn't work. I have also tried to save the Movie from iMovie as a quiktime but I also have to force quit.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • IDVD & iMovie quit during encoding

I have 13 clips in my project that run a total of about 1:40 and there is 3.89 GB of space on disk. I have not had this problem before with it unexpectedly quitting. Do I need more disk space?

Definitely! I would say 10GB is about minimum, more is even better. Keep in mind that when all is said and done, iDVD will have roughly 4+ GB of stuff ready to be burned to the DVD, so it needs a place to store that 4+GB and in addition it needs additional scratch disk space to do its thing. On top of that, the operating system needs free drive space as well to do its background stuff (scratch space, caches, and other temporary files).
In general, you should use hard drives past about 85% of their capacity and with iDVD encoding you want at least a good 10GB free to work with on your boot volume.

  • IDVD ejects disc during burning process of Dual Layer DVD

    Hi,
I am trying to burn a 3hr iMovie project of a recent holiday trip. Due to its size, it therefore needs to go on a Dual Disc DVD. I intend to burn 8 copies, one for each member of the holiday.
I successfully burned the first disc in iDVD, however since then, the disc prematurely ejects at the "Multiplexing and Burning" stage, (At the 'Writing Lead In' stage within this) ,usually with 31mins remaining
I am burning at 4x , I have 27GB free space and I am using AONE Plus DVDs. I have read many discussions on here about buying Verbatim DVD-R's which i can do, but with the first dvd burning successfully, I would prefer to try other options before I commit to purchase..
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me
    Max

    Hi again,
I purchased a pack of Verbatim DVD-R DL Discs, tried the iDVD route and it ejected at the burning and multiplexing stage again. Not only this, but after burning and trying that same failed disc again, it actually contains part of the project, so this disc is now unusable.
After this I went the Disc Utility option as you advised and successfully got to the end until the 'closing session' section. Here, it continues to load and says it is 'closing the session' and i can hear my Disc drive spinning away, stopping, then starting to spin again (this continues to happen forever and ever)
Any suggestions at this stage would be great as i'm truly at a lost cause now..
    Thanks
    Max

  • IDVD ERROR's during burning

Ok i am about to distroy my computer for real,
Ok when ever i want to burn a project gets all the way to the end, i get multipexing errors or error #1 everytime. Anyone know the deal or easy fix?

    Hi Jonathan
Was Your Mac delivered with Mac OS X.4.2 and QT 7.0.3
or is it possibly to downgrade to OS X.3.9 and QT 6.5.2
this is a stable movie and DVD environment - my experience.
Error #-1 Happened to me once. I had:
done a movie in iMovie (less than 50 min) and imported a sound file (.aiff)
that was more than 60 min and I needed about 2 min. So I cut away the
obsolete parts. iMovie couldn't handle the parts that hid away under the
right end of the timeline. Resulted in sounds that was un-deletable and
in an ERROR #-1 in iDVD.
I did: Deleted all sounds on both sound-tracks and imported new sound but
this time I cut it up in more matching portions.
    Now : No error

  • Idvd encoding error during burning

unable to burn imovie project using Idvd...encoding error

    Hi
Few of us here are mind-readers
So if You only say that something is wrong - How do You thing we'll be able to guess what ?
There are zillions of things that can go awry.
    • What material was used - Video Codecs, photo and audio file formats ?
    • Edited in what video editing program - iMovie (version), FinalCut (version) or Adobe Premiere ?
    • How was it imported into iDVD ?
    • Was there any Error Messages - What did it/they say ?
    • Where in the process did it go wrong
    • Brand of DVD used
    • Type of DVD used
    • Burn Speed - set to ?
and much much more need to be told - to set us up on track on where the culprit is.

  • Idvd keeps freezing during burn of slideshow

    Any suggestions?

    Hi
Can be a zillion things. Please tell what You've done - It's so very hard to guess.
    • Can it be so that there are more than 99 photos per SlideShow - iDVD limit
    • Free space on Start-Up hard disk. Less than 25Gb free space ?
    • photos used of a strange format as .bmp etc.
    • audio used in a strange format as .mp3, .wma etc
    • Does it freez - in iDVD test mode - or while burning DVD - or when DVD is played
    • DVD brand used
    • DVD type used
    • Burn speed - set down to ?
And many many more things need to be asked if You don't share a step by step description on what You've done to help us understand where it went wrong.

  • Idvd quitting during encoding

I recently upgraded to Leopard and have had problems burning through idvd ever since. Idvd keeps quitting during the processing movie stage. I have tried repairing permissions and deleting the preference file with no success and have ensured I have 25 gb of free space. Any further suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated as I have run out of ideas now and getting very frustrated.

    Questions:
    Did you repair permissions yet?
are all assets for iDvd located on the startup volume (as opposed to an ext HD)?
Are you using an ext. FW / USB Hard Drive on your mac by any chance? If so eject and disconnect it and try again.

  • Unexpected quit durning burn

I have a 58 min. project that burned fine once. After I made one change and tried to reburn, I have had 4 failed attempts. Each time, iDVD unexpectedly quits durning burning. Any suggestions?

How would I know if I have all of the iDVD upgrades?
Run software update within Software in System preferences. There is a most useful option for it to run automatically weekly.
Also, there are no special moving video features in the project. It is just an interview with my aunt, still pictures, transitions, 4 titles with background music, 3 chapter markers.
It's just possible that the background music is causing this. Check project info in iDVD and make sure the inks are still correct.
Should I repost my original message in hopes that someone else will answer?
Leave it a day or so, others may see it. It will show what you have tried.
Exactly at which stage does it quit and after how long?

  • IDVD Quitting During/After Initial Burning

I'm am having random problems burning projects. I just successfully burned a project that had only 1 menu and 1 QT movie w/o chapters (20 minutes long) but iDVD quit immediately after. A real pain as i need to make multiple copies and now have to wait for asset encoding again.
I also have been having trouble burning other projects that have 2-3 menus, a short QT movie in the menu and a 40 minute QT movie with chapters as the main movie. These projects keep quitting during the burn and nothing is getting on the dvd.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
    10.4.3
    iDVD 4.0.1
    50 GB free space
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Ok, so now i've tried quitting all other programs and rebooting before burning a dvd. iDVD is still quitting after successfully burning a project. I need to burn more than one disk though and don't want to wait for the encoding again.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how to fix this or any other options? Thanks.

  • IDVD 4 now freezes the entire computer during burning

    Hello,
iDVD 4 now freezes my entire computer during burning somewhere around stage 3. I can't even force quit. This never happened before - it does so while burning a project that had been burned successfully many times in the past and also new projects. I did have a bad RAM problem weeks ago - which is fixed now. Tried fixing permissions and cleared out enough free space. This is wierd - it has been working for years.
    Thanks very much,
    NIck M.

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
    Yours Bengt W

  • IDVD 4.0.1 quits after burn

I've seen similar problems on other posts but nothing to help this problem.
After iDVD has encoded and burned all the necessary DVDs that I need, it quits; losing all that encoded data.
This is a problem because (1) It's not supposed to do that and (2) I often need to burn more copies later.
    My stats:
    12" PowerBook G4 1GHz, 40GB HD, 256MB RAM, OS X 10.4.2
External Lacie 160GB HD, Added 1GB RAM, Second Monitor, Airport Extreme, iSight, U2 iPod, iPod Shuffle, PSP, and Belkin 4 port USB hub.
iLife '04, iWork '05, VLC, WMP, Logic Express, QT 7.0.3 pro.

I often need to burn more copies later.
There is a workaround which allows you to burn the DVD to hard disc and create the disc afterwards, known as Easter Egg or "Hurz and Pfurz" on
    http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/15-burn_idvdother.html
Once you get this installed you can make DVD images which you can play using the DVD player in the applications folder and burn using Disc Utility, full instructions on
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
but you just use the second half to burn the DVD. This means you can readily produce multiple copies. iDVD5 has this built in.

  • IDVD quits on burn

I am having trouble with iDVD 5 quitting after encoding but before actual burn. It quits completeley with no error message. I tried making a disk image, same thing happens. I deleted the plist to no avail. I am stumped, I have searched the forum and can find no solution. The superdrive will play DVDs and burn data and music with no problems. I believe it has to be in the iDVD program. I have burned several dvds in the past. Any help would be appreciated.
    powermac g5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.5gb ram

I encoded to DV instead of mov...
DV is a SPECIFIC file type with a SPECIFIC CODEC. - the iApps are designed for DV.
.mov is just a container and several different CODECs can be used for the data - I would expect QT .mov files to work, but...
BTW, the .mov wasn't a REFERENCE file was it? If it was a reference file and you moved or deleted any of the components used in that movie, the reference .mov would be 'broken'.

  • IDVD freezing during burn process

I was trying to burn my DVD project onto a disc and iDVD kept freezing during the middle of it. It just so happened to always freeze during step 2 of the process, but Im not sure if that is just a coincidence or not. Any suggestions at how to get the program to burn my project without freezing up in the middle ?
    Thanks
    I am using iDVD 4

Thanks dispatx.com, that page was of immense help. I found much of it very encouraging simply knowing that someone has gone through the exact same thing, missing deadlines, sleep, etc.
I gathered as much info as I could and have successfully burned a DVD image now using the "Easter Egg" hurz & pfurz. Why doesn't apple include that in the program?
I cleaned up my powerbook prior to burning with OnyX. I trashed the iDVD preferences. I created a new project in iDVD using the same footage I had exported from FCP as QT movies, not self contained. I included songs I downloaded from the iTunes store (debunking the myth that the protected songs foul up the burning process). I held down ctrl and clicked burn, named the image, and then it went to work.
    Timeline:
6:00am started step 1, 10 secondes later, step 2 begins.
9:00 Step 3, Asset Encoding begins (Hallelujah, I never could get to this step)
    9:50 Step 4 begins, mulitplexing
10:20 Image is ready and iDVD is asking me to name the image again, I finally figured out this gives me the option of burning several copies, I did and it only took another 15 minutes to create another image instead of starting the whole process over again.
10:40 I drop it into disk utility and burn a 3.7 GB DVD in 20 minutes.
Oliver Luker accurately observes and records CPU usage at each of the steps so that helped me know NOT to cancel even when Activity monitor showed iDVD as not responding.
I went with best performance because too many people were reporting over 60 minutes and best quality as not working well, and I need this DVD done. I had an extras section in the DVD that I yanked. But I don't understand why we are limited to less than 60 minutes. This angers me a bit and I'm determined to find a way to have a good looking DVD with over 60 minutes of footage that will burn through iDVD. I don't want to buy DVDSP, yet.
    Good luck everyone.
