Idvd slideshow lenght of time to write disc

I just completed my first idvd slideshow and it took more than two hours to write to the disc. Is this normal? There were 193 slides and 5 songs in the slideshow.

You can take footage from your own DVDs, but you will lose quality because the footage on a DVD has been compressed, and needs to be decompressed before you can put it into iMovie and then re-compressed when burned to a new DVD.
You have to use some other software to extract the video, such as Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/
Ripit http://ripitapp.com/ These you must purchase.
or MPEG Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/ This is a free download, but you will need to also purchase and install Apple's $20 Quicktime component: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
Here is a how-to from AppleMan describing the process using MPEG Streamclip:
+I have found I get the best results when I use MPEG Streamclip (which is free). You also have to install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component which costs about $20. Once you install the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, you don't have to interact with it, but MPEG Streamclip needs it.+
+Insert your DVD in your drive. If DVD player runs automatically, shut it down. You should see your DVD as an icon on the desktop. Open it is a finder winder. You should see a folder which has VOB files.+
+Open MPEG Streamclip and drag these VOB files into Streamclip. If it offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes. You can do the VOB files one by one if you want to deal with shorter clips. Or, you can drag all the VOB files at once and create one long clip, or use streamclip to separate them into smaller clips.+
+In Streamclip, select File/Export using Quicktime and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. You may want to check "Deinterlace" in this step. Try deinterlacing and see if you like it. It depends on your final target media as to whether this will help.+
+Now you should have MOV files in Apple Intermediate Codec which can be imported into iMovie.+

Open your iPhoto Library, go to that particular album and verify that you can view the full sized version of each image by double clicking on them.  Report back with the results.

  • IDVD will no longer burn DVD+R discs

After years of happily burning both -R and +R DVD's, now suddenly my iDVD will only work with -R? I'm stranded here with no -R discs (and a new 50-pack of the other), so I hope you can tell me how to restore this function of my software. I suspect it has to do with updates that make the various components incompatible, but I wouldn't have a clue how to remedy that.
I've tried closing and re-starting iDVD, emptying the trash, removing the motion function, deleting encoded assets, moving com.apple.iDVD something something to the desktop before opening iDVD, but nothing made it keep the disc in the drive. It spits it out saying to please insert a DVD-R disc.
    Thanks!
    Roxane

    Try this:
    1. Instead of burning directly to disc, use the option in iDVD to output to a disc image
    2. Upon completion of creating the disc image, use Apple Disk Utility to burn the image to your new media
If that fails, it is likely a media issue; your drive is not compatible with your new media.
Outside of this, something else you can try is to simply see if the disc can be burned using Finder. While in Finder, you can mount writable discs in your drive for backing up files and folders. If Finder cannot mount and write to the disc, again you have a media issue.
    What to do?
Wait for Apple to update the drive firmware to handle newer media; or get an external drive that is newer; or purchase new media. The latter is your cheapest and most timely solution.
I've got quite a selection of media here and seem to notice that some brands give me the most problem. I've found that Verbatim, Sony, Fuji, TDK, and Taiyo-Yuden seem to give predictable results time and time again.
My most recent failure was with some off-brand +R DL media I picked up at a Frys sale. While trying to burn a Snow Leopard install disk, I had 3 failures in a row - drive recognized the disc and burned it, but it would not verify. Going back to one of my tried and true brands resulted in success on the first try.

  • ILife,iDVD-Slideshow+music-Map view

Project completed, prior to Burning and after playing slideshow successfully I checked for errors in Map View. Passed pointer over buttons to reveal message in yellow rectangle,"Track contains unauthorised assets". Can find no reference in Help or in Forum. Burn cycle aborted by computer, "Error in rendering".
As I am not computer literate and am a "grey and wrinkly", help would be much appreciated in its simplest terms. I hope to create other slideshows and progress to movies eventually! Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum. The next time you ask a question, please don't add on to someone else's message thread - this is known as 'thread-jacking'.
The OP (original poster) had problems with iTunes purchased music and this PROBABLY isn't your issue.
The Quicktime file is one created by my videographer, 3 minutes long, with music and voice. ... Obviously the fault is in iDVD.
The first time I create the project, there's sound. But repeating the process for more DVD's results in no sound.
The solution to your multiple DVD issue is simple: create a disk image file (.img) out of iDVD (an option under FILE in iDVD) instead of burning to writable media. You can then use Apple's Disk Utility or Roxio's Toast Titanium to burn as many writable discs as you need - when you need them.
However, if you are trying to customize each disc, there can be issues with iDVD if you try to modify an existing project. The only solution in that case is to start a new iDVD project each time.

  • IDVD quits unexpectedly every-time I try to open it

iDVD quits unexpectedly every-time I try to open it.
Is there any way of fixing this?
I tried reinstalling the program with the Discs that came with my computer (that hold the operating system and some programs).

first suggestion is to post your question on a new thread so it will get the attention it deserves.
secondly is to drag and drop the plist for iDvd to the trash and restart your mac.
also repair permissions. if that fails to help try opening iDvd from a separate user account.

  • How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc which has ample remaining free space? After preparing the new video for burning and clicking on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject.

How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc with a video previously successfully recorded on it? (The disc has ample remaining free space.)
After preparing the new video for burning and clicking in the File menu on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject. My assumption has been that iDVD would automatically find the free space and continue with the new recording from there. I'd be grateful if anyone can shine light on this.

There are, but not with a DVD written as a movie disk. It must be closed when completed, or it doesn't work.
Apple's built in Burn utility also automatically closes any data CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk you burn. Doesn't matter how much space is unused, you can't use it. You'd have to use a more advanced disk creation app, such as Toast Titanium. I then have the option of choosing to write the data as a session:
I can keep doing this until the disk is full. If I've written five sessions to the disk, when I put it in the drive, five CD/DVD icons will appear on the desktop since the OS will treat each session as if they are separate physical disks. At any point you choose Write Disk when writing a group of data, that means you're closing the disk, and again can't add anything after that. So if I had written two sessions, and the third was Write Disk, it's over. I can't put anything else on that disk.

  • Pulling images out of an iDVD slideshow

Stemming from another question I posted on the Powerbook G4 board, I have a question regarding an iDVD slideshow.
My Powerbook's hard drive, I have a sinking feeling, is dead. My iDisk was full and I was getting ready to buy more storage space when the crash happened. I'd just created and burned a slideshow of pictures from a trip to Austria ... is there a way to grab the individual images out of the iDVD slideshow and get them back as individual photos once my computer is repaired.
FYI, I'm looking into data recovery companies, but I'm not holding out much hope.
Please ... your insights are greatly appreciated.
    Powerbook G4 15w/SuperDrive   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   with 750mb RAM

iDVD has an option to add the original pictures to the DVD in the "DVD ROM" area. You can determine if it's there by inserting the DVD in a computer and quitting out of the Player application. Double-click the disc icon and look in the folders -- hopefully you'll find more than two folders and the third one will be labeled something like "DVD-ROM."
As SD says, your other options aren't so great. The slideshow on DVD is a compressed video file (mpeg-2 format) so you'd be uncompressing the video and then extracting a frame. You might check Graphic Converter and Photoshop to see if they can extract a frame without the conversion process.
I don't know if a screen capture would be better... thinking if you had a very large screen, then you'd wind up with a larger-sized screen capture (more pixels).
I assume the pictures were digital and you erased the memory card? There should be software to recover files from the memory card.

  • IDVD Slideshow Question

I exported an iPhoto slideshow to iDVD. I used the Ken Burns effect. I've got around 200 photos and it plays great, no problems but....
heads have been cut off on three slides. Can I edit the individual slides right in iDVD or do I have to go back to iPhoto and then export all over again? That would be very time consuming.
    17 iMac FP 1.25GHz, & PowerPC G3   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iDVD 5, iPhoto 5

Sorry but you have to go back to iPhoto for edits. If double-clicking a slideshow just plays the slideshow and doesn't bring up the slideshow editor, the slideshow may have been created in iPhoto. Slideshows created in iPhoto are sent to iDVD as QuickTime movies, which means you can't edit them.
If you want to make a change to an iPhoto slideshow, make the changes in iPhoto, send the slideshow to iDVD again, and replace the old slideshow with the new one.
Tip: In map view, slideshows created in iPhoto have a movie icon in the upper-left corner. iDVD slideshows have a slideshow icon.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • IDVD slideshow photo resolution

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
From previous posts, it seems that iDVD photo resolution is always less than viewing a iPhoto slideshow while in that application.
    So here is my question:
When I use the option of sharing the photos, iDVD creates a "slideshow" folder with the photos in .JPG,on the DVD. If I copy the folder to my desktop, open, then the resolution is great when viewing on my G5. So if the iDVD app and my verbatim media can create/support these images, why is the iDVD slideshow resolution so poopy?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

OK, but why so lousy even when viewing the DVD using
    my G5?
An NTSC TV set has less than 640x480 pixel
    resolution
    - you computer monitor has more than 4 times this
    resolution.
You are looking at an image with less than 640x480 pixel quality displayed on a much larger pixel count monitor.
Sorry, but what you see is what you get.
DVDs produced by iDVD are best viewed on a TV set. If you are viewing them on a computer - DO NOT set the playback display to 'Full Screen' - use 'Normal' size (which will display the video in a 640x480 window).

  • IDVD slideshow in manual advance mode

Has anyone found a solution to using manual advance for slides in iDVD slideshow. My slideshows created in iDVD will only advance or reverse using the arrows on the minicontrol panel that take you supposidely to the beginning or end of the slideshow. Inotherwords the arrows on the screen do not work nor does the left/right control on the panel work. Interestingly when you press the doublheaded arrows to go to beginning or end it does show on the screen a chapter number as each slide advances. Since I haven't seen any messages on this subject recently, I assume it is a known problem with no solution at this time. Any insights appreciated.

That's pretty much how the slide show works with iDVD although different brands (and models) of DVD players may use different buttons.
The arrows on the screen created by iDVD aren't "hot" - they are just there to act as a "prompt" to the viewer to push a button on the DVD remote. iDVD has a provision to not include the arrows.

  • Adding/DELETING Titles & Comments to Individual Photos In An iDVD Slideshow

I am running iDVD 6.0.3 where I have 85 titled photos [selected, not imported, from Media/Photos into iDVD] already entered into an iDVD slideshow. I would like to have a title on ONLY the FIRST photo. The iDVD "Help Menu" makes it sound like this wish of mine would be possible as it states: "You don't have to include text for all the images. Only text you add will appear in your slideshow; the placeholder text will not appear."
I do know HOW to add a title and/or comment to the FIRST photo, but how do I DELETE the title and or comment from the other 84 photos? Do I have to go through each one and MANUALLY delete each title? That seems like a LOT of trouble, and perhaps I am just missing a way to do this more easily???
I know about using the gear shaped Settings feature to check "Show titles and comments", but that is where it includes the titles that are already on all of the 85 photo from when I chose them from the Media/Photos pane; unless, it seems, that I were to delete the other 84 titles and/or comments INDIVIDUALLY.

Yes, you are right, I could make a "title photo" in iPhoto from a card I could design [I do not have Photoshop Elements] and use that for the title. Thank you. It just seems like this same thing should be able to be done within iDVD itself with the way they have the directions written in the iDVD "Help Menu".
After I made my original post on this topic, I think I solved my own question using a round-about method. I had to use the "batch change" to "no title" in iPhoto BEFORE selecting my 85 photos in iDVD slideshow. That way all of the title/comment areas were blank when I brought them into iDVD, and then I could just add titles or comments to the exact individual photo of the 85 that I wanted to label. So I was able to accomplish what I wanted it to do. It just seems, however, that iDVD should have an option in iDVD to add title/comments to individual photos without having to take the titles off all of the labels ahead of time in iPhoto. If the iPhoto program can allow the titles of photos to be removed as a "batch change", it seems that iDVD should have been designed with that same feature! Or maybe I am missing something here?

  • Encore CS6 hangs at slideshow build component of Blu-Ray disc/folder build

Encore stops responding at slideshow build during overall Blu Ray disc or folder build. Project consists of 96 min video timeline via PrPro dynamic link and Japanese & English subtitle tracks,  main menu plus 4 sub-menus (2 chapter menus, subtitles and slideshow). 2 menus are motion w/audio.
Slideshow consists of 147 jpegs. After 2nd build failure I reduced all images to uniform 1080 height. No transitions, no manual advance, no pan & zoom. Slideshow fit to audio duration of 2 mp3 assets totaling aprx 7 mins and individual slide durationof 2 secs. Aspect set to 16:9. Encoded size of slideshow  58.42 MB.
Running Win7 SP1 home  on i7-3610QM x8 for total 16GB mem w/NVIDIA Quadro 3000M gfx. No prior problems with this configuration for several Blu-Ray and DVD projects. This is first time out with a slideshow component. This particular project built successfully for workcopy Blu-Ray disc, with video timeline and subtitles, but no menus or slideshow.
    Help!
    Elliott

    Thanks Stan,
I am not sure what you mean by your question if I resaved all files. When I resized the images I used Adobe Bridge's Photoshop image processor to bulk re-size the images, saving to a different folder than the originals. I kept the original file names (hmmm, now that I think about it, that may not have been the best choice), then replaced each image asset in Encore's project window, pointing to the file with the same name, but different folder (the preview image in the project window confirmed the reduced image sizes).
But anyway, rather than pulling my hair out risking another hang during the build, I simply made an m2v video files of the jpegs in PrPro (which allowed me to sync some cuts to the music) and placed it in a timeline. No stills now, just an additional timeline.
I'm writing this as the bluray disc build is chugging away. But here's another Encore anomoly, if you have an answer-- before I decided to build the slideshow in PrPro, I tried to save the Encore project with a different filename so I could try your suggestions without corrupting the working project. The save failed twice, well into long process of copying files, returning the error code, "Access Denied". Any thoughts?

  • Audio Sync Problem in iDVD slideshow

I created a slideshow in iPhoto, Version 7.1.5 and transfered it to iDVD. The slideshow contains photos and videos taken with my camera. The videos open in QuickTime, Version 7.6.2, and play with audio. The slideshow plays in iDVD without any problems. I burned a DVD and played it on our TV. The slideshow plays as it did in iDVD with one exception---the audio with the videos plays either prior or after the videos appear in the slideshow. The audio appears to be as recorded by the camera, only the sync with the video clip is off. The slideshow contains 417 slides and 12 video clips.
I created a second "trial" slideshow with a few photos and video clips. This DVD slideshow played as expected in iDVD and on our TV. So I'm suspecting the number of slides is at the source of the problem. When I finalize the slideshow it would contain about 1/2 the number of slides with about the same number of video clips.
Any suggestions on achieving audio sync with the video clips would be greatly appreciated.
    Royal

    Hi Royal
To answer your question directly, the DVD standard is 99 chapters. iDVD works around this limitation by resetting chapter 100 and starting over at 1 again.
You can always create your slideshow in iPhoto, iMovie or a 3rd party slideshow app like PhotoPresenter, Fotomagico, etc. or save it as a QT movie file and add the movie file to an iDVD slideshow.
Here's a good link that OT has set up as a good example while using PhotoPresenter:
    http://web.me.com/toad.hall/Demo3/PhotoPresenterThemes.html
Like I mentioned above, there are a number of third party apps that work just as well if you search this forum for additional examples.
Hope this helps but if not jusrt come on back.

  • IDVD slideshow audio sync off on burned DVD

Others have listed this problem, but no apparent solution. If this is a bug, has it been fixed in iLife'09?
Specifically, a slide show with a mix of photos and video clips late in the slideshow, all imported from iPhoto, advances the audio associated with the video clips several minutes relative to the video. The problem only shows up when the disc is burned, it is fine in preview mode,

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you have the slideshow setting set to mute the added audio when you play the video clips?
You might consider assembling the slideshow iniMovie HD 6 where you can precisely align the music where you want. Save and close iMovie and drag the project file into an iDVD slideshow (so you can scale the movie to the TV safe area).
