IDVD slideshows crash Mac DVD Player

So, I created my movie in iMovie, exported it to iDVD 8, and then I added two slideshows.
One slideshow has 110 pictures and the other slideshow has about 12 pictures.
Both slideshows play perfectly in iDVD preview mode and on my Panasonic DVD player.
But, when I try to play either slideshow on my MacBook Pro, both slideshows crash the Mac DVD Player.
I'm very frustrated with this. You would think that a DVD I create on my Mac can at least play on my Mac!
Any help will be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

It's nice to know that someone is seeing a similar problem...misery
loves company!
I've been creating slideshows in iDVD by dragging and dropping pictures
from iphoto, and the slideshows work great in the iDVD preview, on
my Panasonic DVD player, and my Playstation 2. But, the DVD crashes
the Mac DVD Player EVERY time. I've have problems with the DVD Player
in previous release, so this wouldn't surprise me. But, it would be nice
if the player worked with DVDs created by Apple's own software.
Paul
Hi there, I've just installed iLife 08 on my iMac 20" 2.16, OS 10.4.10 with all
the updates through software update and I get the same problem before even
burning a disc! Any slideshow exported to iDVD from iPhoto makes the programme
bug out when you use the iDVD preview. Same photos dragged into iDVD to make the
slideshow there work fine. Also tried exporting quicktime from iPhoto and
importing into iDVD that way - also causes the crash (I don't even get a 'quit
unexpectedly' message) - there's obviously some problem with quicktime.

  • IDVD movie plays on DVD player not on imac

Have burnt DVD using iDVD plays fine on DVD player but not iMac that created it. Shows movie as VLC files

    Hi
If it follow DVD Standard - as it use to be when created in iDVD. You see at least two folders on the DVD
    - VIDEO_TS
    - AUDIO_TS (empty and must be so)
Then the usual origin to this problem are:
    - Brand of DVD used (Many Cheap brands DO NOT WORK as Video-DVDs) - I only use Verbatim
    - BURN SPEED - If this is not set down there are LOT's of Burn Errors - Many stand alone DVD-Players can handle this but the Mac is very picky - I always set this down as slow possibly (x2 most often ev. x4 NEVER HIGHER)

  • Installing PSE12 Continually  crashes my DVD player during install.  Cannot open or use DVD and it won't open. Finally got it installed, but program blinks continuely when trying to open program.  It then opens after a long wait.

Sorry this is my first time in the Adobe forum.  I pretty much asked everything in my title.  The installation process took me several hours to finally get it loaded.  Continually crashes my DVD player and I have to use a pin to open it to get to the disc.  This is a new disc just purchased a few days ago.  Read where this program has had its share of problems on the internet.  After installing the program, it blinks continually for a long time before it ever opens.  Rather annoying to say the least.  Need this program to get me started in my work.
Will this program work even though it blinks for a long time when opening it?  Seems to work, but since I am not that familiar with it, I really don't know just yet.
    Thank you for your input.

You're right. It wasn't QuickTime itself. I solved all the problems myself.
The main reason why QuickTime files weren't working was because the newest audio driver from Creative released July 2007 (using their autoupdate) is apparently for Windows Vista (it has the name Vista in the update title). Why that update showed up on my Windows XP Pro system, I have no idea. So, I went to Creative's site and got the driver before the latest release, and all works well.
The Microsoft update (from June 2007, I noticed today, not July) is another issue. It's based around the file P17RunE.dll, which is something from Microsoft for the SoundBlaster. Not sure what it does, but I don't need it.
Sorry for wasting all your time on a non QuickTime issue, but thanks for the help.

  • Works in Simulator, doesn't work in Mac DVD player

Never seen this before--the Simulator actually works fine, all links and menu calls are flawless. The Video TS in the Mac DVD player, however, menu calls and a couple of links do not work.
The dvd should be fine, I burned one yesterday and all of this stuff was fine on the disk, just had to go back and make a couple of changes today.
    Anyone seen this before?

I have seen this kind of thing happen before. You should definately try deleting and old builds when you compile. A couple times i had to delete the parse files and let the project reparse to get the dvd to behave properly after the build.
sometimes i could only get the project to work by deleting the offending menus and rebuilding and relinking them.

    Play all chapters, i mean.
I have a DVD and I would like to just play a chapter, and discuss it, without the next chapter automatically starting. Usually DVD players have the "Play all" you can turn off and on...but I don't see it with the Mac player.

  • Airplay Mirroring and the Mac DVD player not working

Has anyone else experienced issues trying to airplay mirror the mac dvd player?  When I attempt to play a dvd while airplay mirroring is turned on the dvd player window just shows the checkerboard pattern and no video (this is on both the laptop screen and the tv screen).  If I take airplay mirroring off the dvd displays properly.

I had this same problem, and i read that it has to do with DRM. Even DVDs you make your self wont work because the DRM is set on the DVD player it self. You can use VLC and it should work, it worked with me. Anyways good luck.

  • Digital noise in Logic after using Mac DVD player

I have Logic Pro 7.2, a dual 1.8 G5 with OS 10.4.7, 3GB of RAM, and loads of hard drive space. Every time I open a song in Logic after having watched a DVD using the Mac DVD player, all the instruments, both midi and audio instruments, just sound like static. If I trash all the Logic preferences and start over it clears it up but who wants to reset their preferences every time. Thanks, Steve.

Thanks to the two who have replied so far to my question. I'll check that out. By the way, I'm new to this, and I've got 67 messages from "Apple Discussions Subscriptions" since I posted this question. Can someone tell me how not to receive those messages. Thanks again, Steve.

  • "Not permitted" access to DVD menu once DVD starts playing --Mac DVD player

    Hi,
DVD works fine on standalone DVD player, but when played on an internal Mac DVD player, it won't allow me to stop the disc and go to the menu once it has started playing. It says "Not Permitted." I've tried a couple different macs.
I made my video in FCP5 with chapters and exported as MPEG2 via compressor to DSP 3.0.2. I need the chapters to work correctly on a Mac DVD player as it is an instructional video which will accompany all the Mac Media Carts that have been purchased for our school district -- it has to play correctly on the included laptops.
    Anyone have any ideas?

When you press STOP in the DVD Player, the DVD stops, no longer running. That's the reason that when you try to press MENU appears the Not Permited message: no way to go to the menu because the DVD is not playing.
That's the normal behaviour of the DVD Player. I think that's the way that thinks works in every DVD player . . . "I think".

  • MAC DVD player stops networks connections...no answers in Safari.

This is a constant and repetitive error.
Everytime that I play the any DVD in the DVD player (application version 5.0.3, system version 5.0.6) Safari goes down,. there is no answser if I continue browsing in Safari.I am connected via Airport, and there are no other users browsing -access by ethernet card-
If I remove the DVD and quit DVD player my network connections are restarted, and safari responds ok.
So I can not browse in safari or access internet if I am runing the MAC DVD Player...
    amazing, no?

    I have the same problem.
Apparently, the "Digital Out" channel cannot be shared by multiple running applications, the first one starting takes it and keeps it. You have to stop it to allow an other (single) application to use it instead.
To me it is a bug : the front most application should take the Digital Out channel, and release it when an other one becomes front most, but this bug has apparently being going on for a long time, and Apple does not seem interested in its correction.

  • I have made a slideshow in iphoto then shared it into iDVD and burnt it onto a disk when i watched the slideshow on my dvd player the music froze several times?

Hi I have made a slideshow for my neices 21st in iphoto then have shared it into iDVD and burnt to a disk..when i watch the dvd on a dvd player the music freezes a few times?? how do i fix this :-)

    Good morning,
There are a few possibilities.  Here's one suggestion if your slideshow is longer than 99 images:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3340011
You may also wish to assemble the slideshow in iMovie if your video clips were recorded in lower resolution (12 bit) mode.  Extracting the audio from these video clips can solve that problem.  Here's an older discussion of that problem:

  • Buttons over video is crashing Apple DVD player!

I have 4 menus (tracks) that use buttons over video. The first one plays just fine- the buttons come up after a second & disappear 30 seconds later(then the menu continues into a film). The other 3 menus crash 1-2 seconds before the buttons over video forces the subtitle to become visible. here's what i've done to troubleshoot:
-set a different menu to be first play
-swapped out the m2v/ac3 files to see if that was causing the issue
-moved my menus/tracks to different VTSs (using dvdsp 4)
-shifted the hi-lite markers forward and back to various times
    -swapped out the overlay file
All my tracks were created exactly the same- using the same BOV structure (13 buttons in all)... I'm completely baffled. One works fine and the rest don't work at all!!
p.s. i burned the disc and tested it on a regular dvd player.. seems to work fine, but it still crashes on the computer.
    PowermacG4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   DVD Studio Pro 4

I figured out the problem so I'll wrap up the thread in case someone else runs into this problem...
I was using dvdSP's ability to "offset" the overlay file in order to make my highlights match up perfectly. For some reason if the offset differs from one overlay to the next in the same subtitle stream, it causes apple dvd player to crash.
    example:
(all motion menus were created on one track with BOV & then separated into stories for easy targeting)
subtile(BOV) 1 had an overlay file offset to 0x & -4y & subtitle(BOV)2, my second menu, had an overlay file offset to 3x & -1y.
The first one would play fine, but as soon as apple dvd player detected the next subtitle it would crash. I solved the problem by editing my overlay files in photoshop to compensate for the offsets & leaving the offset in DVDSP untouched. weird... but it works now.

  • Playing slideshow on a Dvd player

I did a few slideshows with I photo and I Dvd and it was pretty difficult to burn it on a dvd and play it on a dvd player. I change slideshow program, Fotomagico, and I have the same problem. I have a slideshow Mpeg 4, I can play it on my screen but not on my Tv with a dvd player. Do you know a format that will work for a dvd player? Which converter software can I download?

You are not very specific about what's difficult about burning to the DVD and playing on a DVD player. Most consumer DVD players will not playback MPEG4.
Standard Video DVDs have a very specific layout. The disc itself needs to be recorded in UDF format (which is a variation of the ISO9660 format of CD-ROMs). The disc must have a VIDEO_TS ("video title set") folder at the top level (there can also be an AUDIO_TS folder, but on DVD Video it generally doesn't have any data in it). The VIDEO_TS folder must have a collection of .IFO (title information), .VOB (video object), and .BUP (.IFO file backup) files. There must be one VIDEO_VTS.VOB, VIDEO_VTS.IFO, and VIDEO_VTS.BUP file for the disk VGM (disc title) menu, then a series of VTS_* files with the titles themselves on them.
The .VOB files are actually multiple video (one main, the rest are alternate "angles"), audio (one or more languages, for instance), and subtitle streams multiplexed together. The video must be encoded as MPEG-2 at 9.8 Mbps or less, or MPEG-1 at 1.856 MBps or less. Permitted resolutions are 720x480, 704x480, 352x480, or 352x240 pixels at 29.97 frames per second for NTSC video (used in the USA and Canada), and 720x576, 704x576, 352x576, or 352x288 pixels at 25 frame per second for PAL/SECAM (used in the rest of the world). There are also some specific requirements on the frequency of I, P, and B-frames in the video streams, etc.
The audio may be encoded as PCM, DTS, MP2, or AC3 -- and there are of course requirements as to the frequencies, number of channels, and bitrates permitted for each.
The .IFO files contain information about the number of streams in the VOB, where they are, the chapter information, etc.
When you use iDVD to create and burn a DVD, it takes care of the whole business of encoding and formatting the DVD for you to be compliant with the requirements for DVD Video. You just tell it what you want, and it encodes the video, writes the IFO data, and builds the DVD for you.
When burning a DVD, keep in mind that slower burns result in more reliable disks, so burn the disk at the slowest possible speed. If you are going to burn several copies, and you have disk space, it's handy to simply create a DVD image file that you can burn later with Disk Utility.
Also, keep in mind, not all set-top DVD players handle recordable media (particularly dual-layer and read/write media) very well. Some brands of recordable media are also better than others. Older DVD player may not be able to read recordable DVDs at all. Many players handle DVD+R better than DVD-R, though older players might prefer DVD-R disks.

  • Mac DVD player plays all DVDs but this one

A commercial DVD from Netflix will play on my tv, my MacBook Pro, and my old power Mac, but not on my intel Mac.  All other DVDs play on this Mac without a hitch.  Netflix has sent me 2 copies of this and neither works, yet all others work.  There are two discs in the series and neither will work.  They stop after the introduction and warning from the FBI.  They then freeze the DVD player and I have to force quit the DVD Player.  When they freeze there is a green bar at the bottom of the screen.  I have a separate optical drive attached and even when I use that to play the DVD the result is exactly the same.

In addition, I have repaired permissions, but nothing lets this get past the 26 second part.  That's where both of the discs freeze on my iMac.  Again the discs play fine on my dvd player attached to the tv, plays fine on my MacBook Pro and plays fine on my G5 iMac.

  • What formats can the Mac DVD player App support/play?

I have a list of movies that I imported from my friend, and, I'm having a hard time trying to figure out which formats will work and which wont--totally not tech savvy enough to figure this one out.

Unless the movies are on a DVD disk, DVD Player is not your App. Quicktime is it. You should be able to simply double-click the file to open with QT Player - the Mac knows how! - ÇÇÇ

  • DVD button /chatper won't work on mac DVD player

I have another weird thing going on... not sure if anyone would have an answer or not...
My dvd plays fine on a standard dvd player (on a tv) and fine on a dvd player in a pc... But when i play it on a mac the dvd will not advance (only on a certian chapter), when i press the advance button... This button works fine when i play it on both a regular dvd player and on a pc dvd player but not on a mac... Have you ever heard of a dvd working different only on a mac??
    Thanks

Not sure if this is a model or OS issue. I produced a DVD-ROM title for Mac and PC in Macromedia Director in 2003. It's always worked fine but when I tried it recently all the invisible files could not be found. I have 500 copies of the darned thing. Are these toast now? Haven't tested the disc on a PC yet.
Are the invisible files really gone? Or is the OS just not seeing them?
Mount a DVD and in a terminal enter
    cd /Volumes
    ls
and you should see the mounted DVD and its name.
    then enter
cd DVD_NAME (whatever the name is)
once inside the DVD, you can
    ls -al
    and
cd to any directory of your choosing
to see if the files are missing.
My guess? They are all still there but invisible to Finder.
I find it hard to believe all those files on all those DVDs vanished.
