IDVD slideshows - photos squished

I created a slideshow in iPhoto. (settings: classic theme, dissolve transition, 16:9 aspect ratio). Everything looks good, except several pictures are off-center.
I sent it to iDVD using Share -> iDVD. In iDVD, several of the pictures are "squished". Veritically or horizontally, and for no apparent reason. DVD project is also 16:9.

iPhoto '11, iDVD 7.1.2,

I'm new to this, but I've found that you need to be specific about what you've done.
I've absolutely no idea what you're trying to do, but the following works for to create a 16:9 HD video.
iPhoto.
9. Select all.
10. File. Export. Slideshow.
11. Uncheck ‘Automatically send slideshow to iTunes’.
12. Custom Export:
     a. Export: Movie to QuickTime Movie.
     b. Options. Brings up Movie Settings.
     c. Video.
          i. Settings:
               1. Compression Type: H.264.
               2. Frame Rate: 30 (same as HD camera).
          ii. Size:
               1. Dimensions: 1920 x 1080 HD. Note: I found HD 1920x1080 16:9 produced a different look.
     d. Sound:
          i. Compressor: None (Uncompressed).
          ii. Rate: 44.1 kHz.
iii. Check Size: 16 bit and Use: Stereo are both checked.
     e. Save As: ??
13. All will be saved as a single .MOV.
Please note that there are many selections and each seems to produce a different result. You'll need to try each one, as I did.

  • IDVD slideshow photo resolution

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
From previous posts, it seems that iDVD photo resolution is always less than viewing a iPhoto slideshow while in that application.
    So here is my question:
When I use the option of sharing the photos, iDVD creates a "slideshow" folder with the photos in .JPG,on the DVD. If I copy the folder to my desktop, open, then the resolution is great when viewing on my G5. So if the iDVD app and my verbatim media can create/support these images, why is the iDVD slideshow resolution so poopy?

OK, but why so lousy even when viewing the DVD using
    my G5?
An NTSC TV set has less than 640x480 pixel
    resolution
    - you computer monitor has more than 4 times this
    resolution.
You are looking at an image with less than 640x480 pixel quality displayed on a much larger pixel count monitor.
Sorry, but what you see is what you get.
DVDs produced by iDVD are best viewed on a TV set. If you are viewing them on a computer - DO NOT set the playback display to 'Full Screen' - use 'Normal' size (which will display the video in a 640x480 window).

Open your iPhoto Library, go to that particular album and verify that you can view the full sized version of each image by double clicking on them.  Report back with the results.

  • Slideshow photos are rotated 90 degrees in idvd...

Although my photos appear in the proper landscape or portrait view in iphoto, when I drag the photos into the idvd slideshow screen some of the photos are turned 90 degrees so that some the portraits become landscapes. There does not seem to be any way to rotate the photos once they are in the slideshow, only to change their position. Anyone know any tricks??

when I drag the photos into the idvd slideshow screen some of the photos are turned 90 degrees so that some the portraits become landscapes.
This is a problem, it does not happen when I drag or import a portrait photo from iPhoto.
I'd start with rebuilding my iPhoto library per Apple's directions:
It's a good idea to make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder (located in your Pictures folder) before rebuilding it.
    To rebuild the library:
If iPhoto is open, quit it.
Hold down the Command and Options keys, and open iPhoto
iPhoto opens and rebuilds your library.

  • Adding/DELETING Titles & Comments to Individual Photos In An iDVD Slideshow

I am running iDVD 6.0.3 where I have 85 titled photos [selected, not imported, from Media/Photos into iDVD] already entered into an iDVD slideshow. I would like to have a title on ONLY the FIRST photo. The iDVD "Help Menu" makes it sound like this wish of mine would be possible as it states: "You don't have to include text for all the images. Only text you add will appear in your slideshow; the placeholder text will not appear."
I do know HOW to add a title and/or comment to the FIRST photo, but how do I DELETE the title and or comment from the other 84 photos? Do I have to go through each one and MANUALLY delete each title? That seems like a LOT of trouble, and perhaps I am just missing a way to do this more easily???
I know about using the gear shaped Settings feature to check "Show titles and comments", but that is where it includes the titles that are already on all of the 85 photo from when I chose them from the Media/Photos pane; unless, it seems, that I were to delete the other 84 titles and/or comments INDIVIDUALLY.

Yes, you are right, I could make a "title photo" in iPhoto from a card I could design [I do not have Photoshop Elements] and use that for the title. Thank you. It just seems like this same thing should be able to be done within iDVD itself with the way they have the directions written in the iDVD "Help Menu".
After I made my original post on this topic, I think I solved my own question using a round-about method. I had to use the "batch change" to "no title" in iPhoto BEFORE selecting my 85 photos in iDVD slideshow. That way all of the title/comment areas were blank when I brought them into iDVD, and then I could just add titles or comments to the exact individual photo of the 85 that I wanted to label. So I was able to accomplish what I wanted it to do. It just seems, however, that iDVD should have an option in iDVD to add title/comments to individual photos without having to take the titles off all of the labels ahead of time in iPhoto. If the iPhoto program can allow the titles of photos to be removed as a "batch change", it seems that iDVD should have been designed with that same feature! Or maybe I am missing something here?

  • Pulling images out of an iDVD slideshow

Stemming from another question I posted on the Powerbook G4 board, I have a question regarding an iDVD slideshow.
My Powerbook's hard drive, I have a sinking feeling, is dead. My iDisk was full and I was getting ready to buy more storage space when the crash happened. I'd just created and burned a slideshow of pictures from a trip to Austria ... is there a way to grab the individual images out of the iDVD slideshow and get them back as individual photos once my computer is repaired.
FYI, I'm looking into data recovery companies, but I'm not holding out much hope.
Please ... your insights are greatly appreciated.
    Powerbook G4 15w/SuperDrive   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   with 750mb RAM

iDVD has an option to add the original pictures to the DVD in the "DVD ROM" area. You can determine if it's there by inserting the DVD in a computer and quitting out of the Player application. Double-click the disc icon and look in the folders -- hopefully you'll find more than two folders and the third one will be labeled something like "DVD-ROM."
As SD says, your other options aren't so great. The slideshow on DVD is a compressed video file (mpeg-2 format) so you'd be uncompressing the video and then extracting a frame. You might check Graphic Converter and Photoshop to see if they can extract a frame without the conversion process.
I don't know if a screen capture would be better... thinking if you had a very large screen, then you'd wind up with a larger-sized screen capture (more pixels).
I assume the pictures were digital and you erased the memory card? There should be software to recover files from the memory card.

  • Sequence finished - PAL iDVD - Still Photos Pixelated

I have finished a sequence which contains video and stills taken be digital cameras.
I use iPhotos to sort the photos.
When I look at the output either in FCE canvas or after I burned an iDVD (and watched it thru my PowerBook) the still photos look very pixelated; much worse than the video. So what I am saying is this is not an iDVD issue altho the iDVD slideshow of the same images looked great.
I don't think the choice of PAL on the iDVD was material as the image was pixelated in the FCE canvas. But, in past projects I have ignored pixelation when viewing in FCE Canvas as the image seems to improve once one views the DVD.
I used three methods to import these photos into FCE, drag and drop directly from iPhoto into the FCE Browser pane, create a still image through Still Life and create a still image through iMovie. In both the Still Life and iMovie I did not creat any movement and 'shared' both as dv.
I would be grateful for another solution. Surely people use still images successfully in FCE.
As I am in the US I do not have access to a PAL DVD. I am making this movie up for friends in Australia.

Taking NTSC material to PAL (or vice versa) within Final Cut always looks pretty bad to me in my opinion. You really need a good software standards converter like Graeme Nattress' standards converter to do this correctly.
As far a the still images go, you still haven't said if you're looking at the output on a video monitor. The material is being rendered into an interlaced video format for that type of monitor.
How large are the images? A high resolution image that has to be scaled significantly to fit video resolution and have the pixel aspect altered may have too much detail to be modified and then compressed well in a highly compressed format like DV. You're taking your 1.2MB frame and compressing it down to the equivalent of a 120KB frame. If you start with a frame that fits the right resolution and is the correct pixel aspect Final Cut will have to do less to the image, and you're more likely to get a better result.

  • Idvd slideshow

I guess I did not post enough info on my first post so I am trying again. Can you tell I am a newbee at this site. I have made a few slideshows on the I life idvd 05. The last 2 have had problems playing on the dvd player, but not on my computer. I made my slideshows by opening idvd and going to customize. I drag each slide show into the show from the custimize box on idvd(The photos are in iphoto.) The last one had two slide shows. When playing on a dvd player the first slide show is fine, The second hangs and won't move off the first photo or play the music. If I change the order of the slide shows(placing the bottom one on top) and burn another disk the top one will be just fine. What is going on?

    Patricia,
That's better info. If it plays OK on your computer, might be your DVD player. Or the combination of media brand/format/player.
What brand of DVD? What format (DVD-R, not DVD+R or DVD-RW I hope)? How old is your DVD player? What brand DVD player?
How about making a disk image and use DVD Player software to test it? A disk image should play OK in DVD Player. If not, then there's something wrong in your source files; probably.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Disk Utility to burn the DVD.
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (not the .img, the one below) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. Your SuperDrive tray will open. Insert a recordable DVD. (DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and Tiger.
b Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • IDVD Slideshow Question

I exported an iPhoto slideshow to iDVD. I used the Ken Burns effect. I've got around 200 photos and it plays great, no problems but....
heads have been cut off on three slides. Can I edit the individual slides right in iDVD or do I have to go back to iPhoto and then export all over again? That would be very time consuming.
    17 iMac FP 1.25GHz, & PowerPC G3   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iDVD 5, iPhoto 5

Sorry but you have to go back to iPhoto for edits. If double-clicking a slideshow just plays the slideshow and doesn't bring up the slideshow editor, the slideshow may have been created in iPhoto. Slideshows created in iPhoto are sent to iDVD as QuickTime movies, which means you can't edit them.
If you want to make a change to an iPhoto slideshow, make the changes in iPhoto, send the slideshow to iDVD again, and replace the old slideshow with the new one.
Tip: In map view, slideshows created in iPhoto have a movie icon in the upper-left corner. iDVD slideshows have a slideshow icon.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • IDVD slideshow: playlist keeps looping first song in preview mode

I created a slideshow in iDVD using photos imported from iPhoto via the "Photos" tab. I then imported a playlist from iTunes via the "Audio" tab. When I preview the slideshow, only the first song plays--it keeps repeating until the end of the slideshow. How do I fix this? (I have latest versions of all iLife s/w.)

    Hello,alanjackie1,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Make sure you selected the entire playlist in iTunes. You may have inadvertently selected just the first song.

  • IDVD slideshow to iPod?

I've created several home movies and iDVD slideshows. The movies transfer over fine using Handbrake to rip them off the DVD. I can't seem to get the iDVD slideshow to rip/play correctly. When I play the slideshow "video", the music plays OK..but the photos just whiz by in the first 3 or 4 seconds and then stop.
Has anyone had luck in extracting iDVD slideshows (for iPods)?

I've owned a new 20" 2.0 Ghz core duo iMac for about a month now. Coming from an old Mac user dating back to the SE/30 and forward- enough to say I've been around a while. I use both platforms ( and delved into Linux). I must say the intel iMac SCREAMS compared to the G4 Powerbook I've been using for a few years. It's quiet, the screen is GORGEOUS, and I can be running several apps and only use 30-40% of the processor(s) (checking w/ a widget). Games just FLY at high quality ( Quake 4 & Unreal Tournament 2004).
The software is BY FAR better than anything you'll find on XP- I know- I use both! At 38 years old- I've been doing this since programming basic w/ a TRS-80 with a whole 16k of memory- computers simply don't get much better or more productive OR easier to use than these new iMacs w/ the Intel processers. The PRO apps are truly ungodly incredible- talk about TRUE creative power and EVERY BIT worth the money! Thanks Apple!

  • Comments and Titles for iDVD slideshows

I am wondering if there is any way to change the appearance (font, size, etc.) of the comments and titles for photos in an iDVD slideshow.  I have not found a way to do this, and am surprised since it seems I am able to change appearance for the text in virtually all other areas of iDVD.  I am running version 7.1.2.  Thanks for any suggestions.

No, there's no way to modify that font or size.

  • No FULL SCREEN option for slideshow photos?

When creating a new project in iDVD, there only seems to be two screen size options: 4:3 ratio or 16:9 ratio. Is there not some way of selecting FULL SCREEN? As all my digital photographs are 4:3 ratio, that is what I selected.... but there are big chunks of black screen all around all my slideshow photos in the finished iDVD. Very annoying!!!!

Turning off the TV safe area is to prevent parts of the images from being lost, which is not the issue here. The problem I'm having is that there there are black bars around the entire displayed image. I believe this is called windowboxing. Letterboxing has black bars at top and bottom of screen, pillarboxing has the black bars at the left and right of screen. It's all to do with the ratio of the photographs.
My photos were all taken with a digital camera and are 4:3 ratio. I want the images to display FULL SCREEN. They are not doing this - not on a TV monitor - and not on a computer monitor!!! Is windowboxing hard-wired into the iDVD themes? This can't be right. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • IDVD replaces photos in drop zones

Hi. I have iDVD '08 and I burned a dvd. I was using the "Revolution" theme. It had a picture of my cousin in one of the drop zones. After I burned the DVD, I viewed it in my dvd player and the drop zone that had a picture of my cousin now had a picture of one of my cats. I don't know if I did something wrong, but I made sure it was my cousin in the drop zone BEFORE I burned the DVD. I SWEAR that I did not put a picture of my cat in it. Any ideas of what happened?

You're right. There's not alot of info available on this particular issue regarding invisible slideshow photos. So let's try the following.
You say the photos are showing in the drop zone editor nevertheless ..... correct?
What happens when you add a transition (simple 3 second dissolve for example)?
If that fails to help then add music as well and then set the slideshow to "fit to audio". Post back with your results.
